Kara Meister, MD, FAAP, FACS

BioKara D. Meister, MD, FAAP, FACS is a pediatric otolaryngologist and head & neck surgeon. She received her medical degree from Medical University of South Carolina and completed her otolaryngology residency at University of Pittsburgh. She completed a NIH-funded fellowship in head and neck research at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Meister then went on to complete a pediatric otolaryngology fellowship at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford.
She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department Otolaryngology, Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology, at Stanford University. Dr. Meister’s research interests include thyroid cancer, head & neck masses, Graves' disease. She has a special interest in the influence of the environment and pollutants (such as microplastics) on health. She currently serves as the Co-Clinical Chief of Pediatric Otolaryngology. Dr. Meister completed additional training in innovation through the Stanford Biodesign Faculty Fellowship.
Her clinical interests include the treatment of patients with head and neck masses including thyroid nodules and cancer. She is Co-Director, Surgical, of the Children's Thyroid Center at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford and is a participating surgeon in the Aerodigestive and Airway Reconstruction Center at Stanford Children’s Health. She is co-editor of the textbook "Pediatric Bronchoscopy for Clinicians" and enjoys advocacy work with the American Academy of Pediatrics Button Battery Taskforce.
Dr. Meister is a member of the American Thyroid Association (ATA) where she serves on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee and is a member of the ATA Guidelines Writing Group for Thyroid Disease & Pregnancy. She is a member of the pediatric committee of the American Head and Neck Society. She is an author and speaker on masses and tumors of the head and neck, thyroid disease, and thyroid cancer in children and adolescents. In collaboration with SHC, she offers novel treatment for thyroid problems in children and adolescents including radiofrequency ablation of thyroid nodules.
Dr. Meister lives in Woodside with her husband, 3 children, and Rooney the dog.

BioChristian Mejia (he/they) believes that light has the ability to transport us to a moment in time and cradle us within a particular place. Light affects our mood, informs our emotional landscape, and enhances the everyday moments that make up our lives. The right light can tell a story that goes beyond words.
Christian’s approach to design seeks to create environments that ask people to lean into and learn something about our shared humanity. His design practice includes live performance, architectural lighting, and immersive entertainment. His work has been seen on stages and in built environments around the world. Some of his most cherished theatrical collaborations include the Geffen Playhouse (Los Angeles), Fountain Theatre (Los Angeles), Edinburgh Fringe Festival (Scotland), ACT (San Francisco), and New Conservatory Theatre Center (San Francisco). His architectural lighting design practice has included work with Universal Creative, Lincoln Center NYC, and global Soho House properties.

Javier Mejia

BioI am a Lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Stanford University. I am also a member of the Stanford Civics Initiative and an affiliated faculty of the Stanford Center for Latin American Studies and the Stanford Center for Poverty and Inequality. I have been a Lecturer and a Postdoctoral Associate in Economics at New York University Abu Dhabi and a Visiting Scholar at the University of Bordeaux. I received my Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Los Andes. My research centers on the intersection between social networks and economic history, extending to entrepreneurship and political economy topics.
My geographical areas of specialty are Latin America and the Middle East.
I regularly contribute to different news outlets. Currently, I am a Forbes Magazine op-ed columnist.

Bethlehem Mekonnen, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Ophthalmology
BioDr. Mekonnen is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist with the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor of medicine in the Department of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Mekonnen diagnoses and treats a wide range of eye conditions, including cataracts, corneal and external eye diseases. She creates an individual, comprehensive care plan for each of her patients.
Dr. Mekonnen’s clinical research interests include exploring the most effective medical and surgical therapies for patients with corneal and external eye diseases. She has researched and published on outcomes of macular edema, described a novel surgical technique for severe ocular surface disease and described a possible new ophthalmic manifestation of a rare congenital disorder called Cobb syndrome.
Dr. Mekonnen has published work in the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Cornea: The Journal of Cornea and External Disease, and the Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection. She has presented to her peers at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Women in Ophthalmology (WIO) Summer Symposium, and the Annual GlaxoSmithKline Women in Science Conference.

Mads Melbye
Visiting Professor, Pediatrics - Neonatology
BioMads Melbye, MD, DMSc, is visiting Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is also Director of the Danish Cancer Institute (DCI), Research Director at the Danish Cancer Society in Denmark, and Professor in Medical Epidemiology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. From 2016-2020 he was President and CEO at Statens Serum Institut, Copenhagen, Denmark. Previous positions at e.g. the National Cancer Institute, NIH, USA, before he became State Epidemiologist in Denmark, and later Head of Department of Epidemiology Research, and Division Director of Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance, Statens Serum Institut. Previous academic positions as Danish Research Council Professor, NORFA professor, and Foreign Adjunct Professor at Karolinska Institute in Sweden. He has written more than 700 publications (H-index: 115/141 (Web of Science/Google scholar) and is the Dane with most papers in high impact journals in general medicine (NEJM, Lancet, JAMA). He is among the worlds top 2% of scientists as listed in the AD Scientific Index 2023. He is knighted by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and has received e.g. the Novo Nordisk Prize, the large Erhoff Prize, and the Anders Jahre Prize (young researchers). He is e.g. chairman of the scientific committee at the Danish Health Insurance Fund, member of the scientific advisory board for Oslo University Hospital, member of the A.P. Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation (medicine), and board member of the Norwegian Cancer Registry. Michelle Mello
Professor of Law and of Health Policy
BioMichelle Mello is Professor of Law at Stanford Law School and Professor of Health Policy in the Department of Health Policy at Stanford University School of Medicine. She conducts empirical research into issues at the intersection of law, ethics, and health policy. She is the author of more than 250 articles on medical liability, public health law, the public health response to COVID-19, pharmaceuticals and vaccines, biomedical research ethics and governance, artificial intelligence, health information privacy, and other topics.
The recipient of a number of awards for her research, Dr. Mello was elected to the National Academy of Medicine at the age of 40. From 2000 to 2014, she was a professor at the Harvard School of Public Health, where she directed the School’s Program in Law and Public Health.
Dr. Mello teaches courses in torts and public health law. She holds a J.D. from the Yale Law School, a Ph.D. in Health Policy and Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.Phil. from Oxford University, where she was a Marshall Scholar, and a B.A. from Stanford University. -
Nicholas Melosh
Professor of Materials Science and Engineering
BioThe Melosh group explores how to apply new methods from the semiconductor and self-assembly fields to important problems in biology, materials, and energy. We think about how to rationally design engineered interfaces to enhance communication with biological cells and tissues, or to improve energy conversion and materials synthesis. In particular, we are interested in seamlessly integrating inorganic structures together with biology for improved cell transfection and therapies, and designing new materials, often using diamondoid molecules as building blocks.
My group is very interested in how to design new inorganic structures that will seamless integrate with biological systems to address problems that are not feasible by other means. This involves both fundamental work such as to deeply understand how lipid membranes interact with inorganic surfaces, electrokinetic phenomena in biologically relevant solutions, and applying this knowledge into new device designs. Examples of this include “nanostraw” drug delivery platforms for direct delivery or extraction of material through the cell wall using a biomimetic gap-junction made using nanoscale semiconductor processing techniques. We also engineer materials and structures for neural interfaces and electronics pertinent to highly parallel data acquisition and recording. For instance, we have created inorganic electrodes that mimic the hydrophobic banding of natural transmembrane proteins, allowing them to ‘fuse’ into the cell wall, providing a tight electrical junction for solid-state patch clamping. In addition to significant efforts at engineering surfaces at the molecular level, we also work on ‘bridge’ projects that span between engineering and biological/clinical needs. My long history with nano- and microfabrication techniques and their interactions with biological constructs provide the skills necessary to fabricate and analyze new bio-electronic systems.

Jamie Meltzer
Professor of Art and Art History
BioProfessor Jamie Meltzer teaches in the M.F.A. Program in Documentary Film. His feature documentary films have been broadcast nationally on PBS and have screened at numerous film festivals worldwide. Shifted Landscapes, a documentary feature in production, presents a mosaic of stories depicting the environmental, cultural, and psychological landscapes of California amidst the ongoing climate crisis. His short documentary, not even for a moment do things stand still, premiered at SXSW in March 2022, winning a Special Jury Mention in Visual Reflection. The film provides an observational glimpse into a COVID-19 art installation, dropping into intimate moments of people honoring their loved ones, and interrogating the role of mourning and closure during an unfolding tragedy. It was published as a New York Times Op-Doc in April 2022. Huntsville Station, a short documentary film directed with Chris Filippone, was featured as a New York Times Op-Docs and premiered at Berlinale and SXSW in 2020. The film observes the scene at a bus station - where dozens of inmates just released on parole take in their first moments of freedom before taking the bus home. True Conviction (broadcast on Independent Lens in May 2018), a co-production of ITVS and the recipient of a Sundance Institute grant and a MacArthur grant, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival where it received a Special Jury Mention in the Best Documentary Feature category. Informant (2012), about a revolutionary activist turned FBI informant, was released in theaters in the US and Canada in Fall 2013 by Music Box Films and KinoSmith. Previous films include: Off the Charts: The Song-Poem Story (Independent Lens, 2003), about the shadowy world of song-poems, Welcome to Nollywood (PBS Broadcast, 2007), an investigation into the wildly successful Nigerian movie industry, and La Caminata (2009), a short film about a small town in Mexico that runs a simulated border crossing as a tourist attraction.

Teresa Meng
Reid Weaver Dennis Professor in Electrical Engineering and Professor of Computer Science, Emerita
BioTeresa H. Meng is the Reid Weaver Dennis Professor of Electrical Engineering, Emerita, at Stanford University. Her research activities in the first 10 years focused on low-power circuit and system design, video signal processing, and wireless communications. In 1998, Prof. Meng took leave from Stanford and founded Atheros Communications, Inc., which developed semiconductor system solutions for wireless network communications products. After returning to Stanford in 2000 to continue her teaching and research, Prof. Meng turned her research interest to applying signal processing and IC design to bio-medical engineering. She collaborated with Prof. Krishna Shenoy on neural signal processing and neural prosthetic systems. She also directed a research group exploring wireless power transfer and implantable bio-medical devices. Prof. Meng retired from Stanford in 2013.

Joshua Menke
Clinical Associate Professor, Pathology
BioDr. Joshua Menke completed his hematopathology fellowship at Stanford and a cytopathology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). His clinical and research interests lie at the intersection of hematopathology, cytopathology, and advanced single-cell and cell-free diagnostic techniques. As the Associate Section Director of Clinical Flow Cytometry at Stanford, Dr. Menke is developing and validating new minimal residual disease assays for detecting low levels of myeloid and lymphoid neoplasms in the post-treatment setting, as well as multiple other 12-color flow assays with the latest markers for routine phenotyping.
Dr. Menke is the recipient of the Paul E. Strandjord Young Investigator Award from the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Scientists and the Laurence J. Marton Award for Excellence in Research from UCSF for his translational work on CALR mutations at the UCSF Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory. Dr. Menke is a founding member of the Cytology-Hematopathology Interinstitutional Collaboration (CHIC), which aims to study the performance of cytology samples in diagnosing lymphoma across large datasets from five academic institutions. He currently chairs this group, leading large clinical research studies. -
Jisha Menon

BioJisha Menon is the Robert G. Freeman Professor of International Studies. She serves as the Sakurako and William Fisher Family Director of the Stanford Global Studies Division. She is Professor of Theater and Performance Studies, and (by courtesy) of Comparative Literature. Her research interests lie at the intersection of critical theory and performance studies; law and humanities; affect theory, cities, and capitalism; cosmopolitanism and nationalism. Her current research project, Law, Affect, and the Performance of Personhood (under contract, Cambridge UP) explores how legal practices entrench a particular liberal topology of personhood, and how this conception departs from other societies where persons are conceived in more plural and discontinuous ways. The book argues that attending to the fictive constitution of the person within the law allows us to highlight the artifice, indeed, the aesthetics that are central to jurisprudence. Her four books explore arts and aesthetics in relation to neoliberal capitalism, postcolonial nationalism, secularism, and geopolitical conflict. Her latest book, Brutal Beauty: Aesthetics and Aspiration in Urban India (Northwestern UP, 2021) considers the city and the self as aesthetic projects that are renovated in the wake of neoliberal economic reforms in India. The study explores how discourses of beauty are mobilized toward anti-democratic ends. Sketching out scenes of urban aspiration and its dark underbelly, the book delineates the creative and destructive potential of India’s lurch into contemporary capitalism. Her first book, The Performance of Nationalism: India, Pakistan and the Memory of Partition (Cambridge UP, 2013), examines the affective and performative dimensions of nation-making. The book recuperates the idea of "mimesis" to think about political history and the crisis of its aesthetic representation, while examining the mimetic relationality that undergirds the encounter between India and Pakistan. She is also co-editor of two volumes: Violence Performed: Local Roots and Global Routes of Conflict (with Patrick Anderson) (Palgrave-Macmillan Press, 2009) and Performing the Secular: Religion, Representation, and Politics (with Milija Gluhovic) (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017.) Previously, she served as Assistant Professor of English at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.

Antonio Meola, MD, PhD
BioAntonio Meola M.D. Ph.D graduated Summa cum Laude and Research Honors at the University of Pisa, Italy, in 2008, and completed his residency training in Neurosurgery at the same Institution in July 2015. Dr Meola attended a Ph.D. program at the University of Florence, Italy, where he discussed a doctoral thesis entitled "A New Head-Mounted Display-based Augmented Reality System in Neurosurgical Oncology: a study on phantom".
Since 2/2014 to 1/2015 Dr Meola completed a Research Fellowship in Neurosurgical anatomy at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), under the Direction of Dr. Juan C. Fernandez-Miranda. The main focus of his research was the surgical neuroanatomy of the white matter tracts of the human brain.
Since 7/2015 to 6/2016 Dr Meola served as Clinical Fellow in Image-Guided Neurosurgery at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, in Boston, MA (Director: Dr. Alexandra J. Golby M.D.). During the fellowship, he focused on the clinical application and integration of advanced imaging techniques, including intraoperative-MRI, intraoperative US, functional MRI, tractography.
Since 7/2016 to 6/2017 Dr Meola completed a Neurosurgical Oncology Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH, devoting his efforts to minimally-invasive neurosurgical techniques, such as Laser interstitial Thermal Therapy (LITT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (Gamma Knife), as well as to awake neurosurgery.
Starting 7/2017, Dr Meola joined the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford. Dr. Meola mainly focuses on conventional and innovative treatments for brain and skull base tumors, including both surgery and stereotactic radiosurgery (CyberKnife). -
Mark Mercola

BioDr. Mercola is Professor of Medicine and Professor in the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. He completed postdoctoral training at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, was on the faculty in the Department of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School for 12 years, and later at the Sanford-Burnham-Prebys Institute and Department of Bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego before relocating to Stanford in 2015.
Prof. Mercola is known for identifying many of the factors that are responsible for inducing and forming the heart, including the discovery that Wnt inhibition is a critical step in cardiogenesis that provided the conceptual basis and reagents for the large-scale production of cardiovascular tissues from pluripotent stem cells. He has collaborated with medicinal chemists, optical engineers and software developers to pioneer the use of patient iPSC-cardiomyocytes for disease modeling, safety pharmacology and drug development. His academic research is focused on developing and using quantitative high throughput assays of patient-specific cardiomyocyte function to discover druggable targets for preserving contractile function in heart failure and promoting regeneration following ischemic injury. He co-established drug screening and assay development at the Conrad Prebys Drug Discovery Center (San Diego), which operated as one of 4 large screening centers of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) Molecular Libraries screening initiative and continues as one of the largest academic drug screening centers.
Prof. Mercola received an NIH MERIT award for his work on heart formation. He holds numerous patents, including describing the invention of the first engineered dominant negative protein and small molecules for stem cell and cancer applications. He serves on multiple editorial and advisory boards, including Vala Sciences, Regencor, The Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research and the Human Biomolecular Research Institute. His laboratory is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Phospholamban Foundation and Fondation Leducq. -

Matthew Mesias
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Primary Care and Population Health
BioMatthew Mesias, M.D., is a Geriatrician and Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. He completed his medical degree at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and furthered his training internal medicine residency and geriatrics fellowship at the University of Washington. He serves as the Medical Director of the Inpatient Geriatrics Consult Service at Stanford University Hospital. His academic interests include quality improvement in geriatric care, mentorship of medical trainees, and the development of curricula for geriatrics medical education. In 2023, he was awarded the HRSA Geriatric Academic Career Award, which supports his leadership and professional development while creating geriatric educational programs for community-partnered clinics.

Johanna Mills Metzgar

BioJohanna joined Stanford as Associate Vice Provost for Student and Academic Services and University Registrar in May 2018.
In her role, Johanna leads the Registrar's Office and seven other departments, including the Bechtel International Center, Graduate Admissions, Mind Over Money Financial Wellness, Student Financial Services, Student Information Systems, the Student Services Center, and User Experience & Design Strategy.
Under Johanna’s leadership, Student and Academic Services (SAS) has implemented a multi-year IT strategy that involves reimagining the experience for Stanford students and scholars by modernizing technology systems, making connections between them more seamless, and enabling students to easily navigate — and get the most out of — their academic journey at Stanford.
In addition to enhancing student services and the student experience, SAS is investing in these three areas to advance our vision:
- Strengthen engagement and connection among staff who support student services across the university community
- Renew and extend the system infrastructure supporting students, scholars, and faculty
- Build an enterprise academic, advising, planning, and enrollment platform as the first step toward replacing the enterprise student information system
Before joining Stanford, Johanna served as associate registrar at the University of California, Berkeley. She brought to Stanford more than 20 years of combined experience in student services at Cal as well as Columbia University, where she worked for 10 years in numerous roles, including associate director for the institution’s Division of Student Services and acting executive director of student services at Columbia’s Medical School. She also served as an associate registrar, assistant registrar, and financial aid officer at Columbia.
In her previous roles, Johanna streamlined and improved a wide range of academic and administrative processes, including billing, third-party payments, grading, transcript fulfillment, course approval, catalog production, class scheduling, enrollment management, degree audit, and graduation checkout. She has demonstrated a deep commitment to students by creating systems that have transformed how students explore courses and design their academic paths.

Timothy Meyer
Stanford University Professor of Nephrology, Emeritus
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsInadequate removal of uremic solutes contributes to widespread illness in the more than 500,000 Americans maintained on dialysis. But we know remarkably little about these solutes. Dr. Meyer's research efforts are focused on identifying which uremic solutes are toxic, how these solutes are made, and how their production could be decreased or their removal could be increased. We should be able to improve treatment if we knew more about what we are trying to remove.

Debra Meyerson
Adjunct Professor, GSE Faculty Affairs
BioTenured Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior from 2003 to 2013. Transitioned to adjunct professor in 2013 after a severe stroke in 2010.
While full time at Stanford and previously, Debra Meyerson conducted research primarily in three areas: a) gender and race relations in organizations, specifically individual and organizational strategies of change aimed at removing inequities and fostering productive inter-group relations; b) the role of philanthropic organizations as intermediaries in fostering change within educational institutions; and c) going to scale in the charter school field. Debra authored Tempered Radicals: How People Use Difference to Inspire Change at Work (HBS Press 2001), which provides an in depth look into how people can use diversity and difference to create positive change in the workplace without division or strife.
Nine years after her stroke in 2010, Debra published Identity Theft: Rediscovering Ourselves After Stroke (Andrews McMeel Publishing, 2019.) The book is built on the combination of her lived experience as a survivor with disabilities and extensive interviews and research; it highlights the need for significantly more support than is provided in the current system to rebuild identity on the path to rebuilding lives of meaning and purpose. Debra also and co-founded Stroke Onward, a nonprofit now dedicated to catalyzing change in the healthcare system in order to insure survivors in the future receive that support. As co-Chair and active volunteer for Stroke Onward, Debra's focus is on driving research and publications that will help to better understand the problems and solutions that can inform the creation of a better healthcare system. She is also an extensive speaker in academic and industry settings.

Alice Miano
Advanced Lecturer
BioDr. Alice (Ali) Miano teaches Spanish at all levels from an antiracist, social justice standpoint. She also incorporates and studies the effects of community-engaged language learning (CELL), both in her classes and in the Spanish-speaking communities in which she and her students interact. Her work examines reciprocal gains as well as challenges in CELL, and likewise interrogates traditional notions of "service" and “help” while underscoring the community cultural wealth, resistance, and resilience (Yosso, 2005) found in under-resourced communities and communities of color. She and her second-year students of Spanish have teamed up on joint art projects with a local chapter of the Boys & Girls Club of the Peninsula and currently collaborate with the Mountain View Dayworker Center. Many of her third-year students have co-created digital storytelling projects with Stanford workers.
Dr. Miano's current work examines the use of Critical Race Theory (CRT) as an analytical tool for students of Spanish who wish to gain deeper understandings of some of the social, cultural, and historical forces linking race and language. This work has found that CRT vitally engages students in the language classroom and may likewise lead to more robust communicative proficiency. In addition, her ethnographic research has examined the literate practices and parental school efforts of Mexican immigrant mothers in the Silicon Valley, finding that regardless of the mothers' (in)access to formal education, they supported their children's schooling in a variety of ways, many of which go unrecognized by educators and the society at large.
Dr. Miano has also volunteered to assist asylum seekers through the CARA Probono Project at the South Texas Family Detention Center in Dilley, TX; Al Otro Lado in Tijuana, Mexico; the Services, Immigration Rights, and Education Network (SIREN) in the San Francisco Bay Area, and Freedom for Immigrants.
In addition, as a workshop facilitator certified by ACTFL in the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and Writing Proficiency Test (WPT), Dr. Miano has been privileged to engage with language instructors at various points around the globe--including Madagascar and Timor Leste, as well as a variety of Latin American countries from Paraguay to Mexico--on behalf of both ACTFL and the U.S. Peace Corps. -
Sara Michas-Martin
Lecturer
BioSara Michas-Martin is a poet and nonfiction writer who draws inspiration from science and the natural world. Specific teaching interests include ecopoetics, environmental humanities, science communication, and hybrid forms.
Her book, Gray Matter, winner of the Poets Out Loud Prize and nominated for the Colorado Book Award, explores the relationship between biology, the brain, and one’s conscious understanding of self. Current projects include a literary nonfiction manuscript that draws on medical, cultural, and natural history to consider how the logic of the maternal body corresponds, or is in tension with, ecological and social systems. Fire Weather, a poetry manuscript, takes on deep ecology and the ethics of care in our moment of environmental precarity.
Sara holds a BFA in visual art from the University of Michigan and an MFA in poetry from the University of Arizona. Her work has been supported by a Wallace Stegner fellowship, grants from the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund for Women, the Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Prize, as well as fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center, Virginia Center for the Arts, Marble House Project, and the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference and the Community of Writers.
She received Notable Mentions in the Best American Essays and Best American Science and Nature Writing anthologies. Recent poems and essays have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and published in the American Poetry Review, The Believer, The Glacier, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), Longreads, New England Review, Orion, Harvard Review, Kenyon Review, Terrain.org, and elsewhere. She lives in the mountains with her family east of Monterey Bay. -

Geri Migielicz

BioGeri is the Lorry I. Lokey Visiting Professor of Professional Journalism at Stanford University, teaching multimedia and immersive journalism courses in the Stanford Graduate Program in Journalism.
Geri was Director of Photography at the San Jose Mercury News from 1993 to 2009. Under Geri’s tenure, the Mercury News won major awards for photo editing and multimedia, sustaining the paper as a leader and innovator in digital visual journalism.
Geri was executive producer of a 2007 national News and Documentary Emmy Award-winning web documentary, “Uprooted.” for the Mercury News. She was a newsroom leader for the coverage of the Loma Prieta earthquake awarded a 1990 Pulitzer Prize for General News Reporting for the Mercury News. She also edited the paper’s coverage of California’s recall election, a 2003 Pulitzer finalist in Feature Photography. Geri was a 2004-5 Knight Fellow at Stanford University, where she studied multimedia narratives. She is a 2013 inductee to the Missouri Photojournalism Hall of Fame.
She has served as visiting faculty at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies and has served as advisory board member for The Kalish workshop for photo editors. She has been faculty at the Missouri Photo Workshop and has presented at workshops for the Society of Newspaper Design, the National Press Photographers Association [NPPA] and the regional chapter of the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences. Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe research focus of the laboratory is the study of sleep and sleep disorders such as narcolepsy and Kleine Levin syndrome. We also study the neurobiological and genetic basis of the EEG and develop new tools to study sleep using nocturnal polysomnography. Approaches mostly involve human genetic studies (GWAS, sequencing), EEG signal analysis (deep learning), and immunology (narcolepsy is an autoimmune disease of the brain). We also work on autoimmune encephalitis.

BioDr. Lekha Mikkilineni is a board-certified medical oncologist. She is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Blood & Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy.
Dr. Mikkilineni has extensive experience treating blood and bone marrow cancers. She currently provides care through the Bone Marrow Transplant & Cellular Therapy Program at Stanford Health Care. Her clinical focus is multiple myeloma, plasma-cell leukemia, Extramedullary myeloma, high-risk myeloma, CAR T cell therapy, bispecific therapy, amyloidosis, POEMS syndrome, and Waldenstrom’s macroglobunemia.
Dr. Mikkilineni’s research centers on exploring novel CAR T-cell therapies to treat multiple myeloma and to define mechanisms of resistance to immunotherapy. She is particularly focused on understanding how to improve therapies for multiple myeloma patients who have extramedullary disease or high-risk features. Prior to coming to Stanford, she ran phase 1 CAR T-cell trials for multiple myeloma targeting BCMA and SLAMF7 at the National Cancer Institute.
Dr. Mikkilineni received the Conquer Cancer Foundation Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology for her research focusing on SLAMF7 as a potential target for multiple myeloma. She has received honors and awards for her work at the NCI. She has completed fellowships in hematology/oncology and immunotherapy at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute/National Cancer Institute. She finished her residency in internal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. She holds a Master of Science in medical sciences from Boston University and a medical degree from Tulane University.
Dr. Mikkilineni has authored book chapters and published research in numerous high-impact academic journals. She has presented her findings through oral and poster presentations at national and international conferences. -

BioPaul Milgrom is the Shirley and Leonard Ely professor of Humanities and Sciences in the Department of Economics at Stanford University and professor, by courtesy, in the Stanford Graduate School of Business and in the Department of Management Sciences and Engineering. Born in Detroit, Michigan on April 20, 1948, he is a member of both the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a winner of the 2008 Nemmers Prize in Economics, the 2012 BBVA Frontiers of Knowledge award, the 2017 CME-MSRI prize for Innovative Quantitative Applications, and the 2018 Carty Award for the Advancement of Science.
Milgrom is known for his work on innovative resource allocation methods, particularly in radio spectrum. He is coinventor of the simultaneous multiple round auction and the combinatorial clock auction. He also led the design team for the FCC's 2017 incentive auction, which reallocated spectrum from television broadcast to mobile broadband.
According to his BBVA Award citation: “Paul Milgrom has made seminal contributions to an unusually wide range of fields of economics including auctions, market design, contracts and incentives, industrial economics, economics of organizations, finance, and game theory.” As counted by Google Scholar, Milgrom’s books and articles have received more than 80,000 citations.
Finally, Milgrom has been a successful adviser of graduate students, winning the 2017 H&S Dean's award for Excellence in Graduate Education. -

The overarching goal of the center is to provide the groundwork to streamline, accelerate, and promote the translation of basic discoveries into effective therapies and interventions to benefit patients affected by cystic fibrosis. My laboratory group currently has three main lines of investigation: respiratory cell biology in CF; remote biochemical monitoring; and lung physiology in young children.

Prior to joining Stanford, he was in private practice for 27 years. Dr. Millard’s medical practice involves the treatment of spine pain syndromes and Sports injuries. Interventional spine procedures performed by Dr. Millard include cervical/lumbar: transforaminal epidural injections; facet injections; medial branch blocks and radio frequency ablation (rhizotomies). He has served as team physician for the San Francisco 49ers (1992-2008) and the San Jose Sharks (2005-2015).

BioA native of the Bay Area, I studied painting and lithography at Stanford University and subsequently instructed in art at Stanford, the University of Santa Clara, San Mateo Community College, Academy of Art University, and San Francisco Center for the Book.
At Stanford I studied with Richard Diebenkorn, Nathan Oliveira, Frank Lobdell, George Miyasaki, Dan Mendelowitz, and Lorenz Eitner and am immensely grateful for the teachings of Swiss type designer André Gürtler.
I opened my M2 Design Studio in 1979 and have been designing and illustrating ever since. I offer calligraphy and lettering solutions for almost any purpose, and have produced properties for multimedia presentations such as NBC’s television series "Who Do You Think You Are?” and handlettered murals for the large walls of the City of Belmont Library. I pioneered online courses for Academy of Art University in San Francisco and developed 15 popular workshops on the calligraphic method.
I enjoy opening doors to students so that they will move forward to enjoy and use the art of markmaking. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsCardiac and heart valve disease with experimental laboratory large animal projects focused on the investigation of left ventricular and cardiac mechanics, bioenergetics, and LV and mitral valve physiology and pathophysiology. Current thrust is aimed at understanding the mitral valve and subvalvular mitral apparatus and transmural LV wall strains, thickening, and myolaminar fiber-sheet mechanics.
Clinical research interests include thoracic aortic diseases (aortic dissection, aneurysm) and cardiac valvular disease, including surgical treatment, endovascular thoracic aortic stent-graft repair, mitral valve repair, and valve-sparing aortic root replacement. -
Dale Miller

BioProfessor Miller’s research focuses on various aspects of social and group behavior. Long interested in social norms, he has investigated the processes underlying the development, transmission, and modification of group norms. He has been especially interested in the emergence and perpetuation of social norms that lack broad support. A second focus of his research is the origins of people’s commitment to social justice and the role that justice plays in social life. He has also studied and written on the sources and cures of cultural conflict.
Professor Miller has served on the editorial board of several scientific journals and currently serves on the editorial board of several scientific journals and currently serves on the editorial boards of the Social Justice Research, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and Psychological Inquiry. He has received numerous awards and has been a Visiting Fellow at both the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (Stanford) and the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton).

Travis Miller, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Surgery - Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
BioDr. Travis Miller is a fellowship-trained plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Stanford Health Care. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Miller specializes in plastic surgery from head to toe with additional training in hand and microsurgery. He treats a multitude of conditions of the hand and upper extremity, including carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, hand and wrist fractures, wrist pain and instability, arthritis, cubital tunnel syndrome, Dupuytren’s, and brachial plexus injury. He specializes in complex reconstruction all over the body using both local tissues and free tissue transfer. He has a special interest in peripheral nerve surgery, including treating nerve compression syndromes, tumors, traumatic injuries, amputation pain, neuromas, and migraines. He also performs aesthetic surgery, and for all his patients he strives to achieve their functional and cosmetic goals.
Dr. Miller received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School where he graduated first in his class. He completed his residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery through Stanford University School of Medicine. Before pursuing a fellowship in Hand and Microsurgery at the University of Washington, he also completed an in-residency fellowship at the Buncke Clinic in San Francisco, widely considered the birthplace of microsurgery.
Dr. Miller has an extensive research background. He collaborated with a team that invented and patented a medical device used for coiled surgical tools and catheters. In addition to book chapters and monographs, he has written numerous peer-reviewed journal manuscripts that have been published in journals such as The Journal of Hand Surgery, The Journal of Surgical Oncology, Microsurgery, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Miller has presented his research at regional, national, and international meetings. -

Ana Raquel Minian
Clifford G. Morrison Professor of Population and Resources Studies
BioAna Raquel Minian is an Associate Professor in the Department of History. Minian received a PhD in American Studies from Yale University. At Stanford University, Minian offers classes on Latinx history, immigration, histories of incarceration and detention, and modern Mexican history.
Minian's first book, Undocumented Lives: The Untold Story of Mexican Migration (Harvard University Press, 2018) received the David Montgomery Award for the best book in labor and working-class history, given jointly by the Organization of American Historians and the Labor and Working-Class History Association; the Immigration and Ethnic History Society’s Theodore Saloutos Book Award for an early career scholar’s work in immigration and ethnic history; the Western Association of Women Historians’ Frances Richardson Keller-Sierra Prize for best monograph in the field of history by a member; the Association for Humanist Sociology’s Betty and Alfred McClung Lee Book Award for best book in humanist sociology; and the Americo Paredes Book Award for Non-Fiction presented by the Center for Mexican American Studies at South Texas College. It was also a finalist for the Frederick Jackson Turner Award, given to the author of a first scholarly book dealing with some aspect of American history by the Organization of American Historians and received an honorable mention for the Latin American Studies Association’s Bryce Wood Book Award given to an outstanding book on Latin America in the social sciences and humanities published in English.
Minian's second book, In the Shadow of Liberty: The Invisible History of Immigrant Detention (Viking Press, forthcoming, April 2024) reveals the history of the immigrant detention system from its inception in the 1800s to the present. Braiding together the vivid stories of four migrants seeking to escape the turmoil of their homelands for the promise of America, the book gives this history a human face, telling the dramatic story of a Central American asylum seeker, a Cuban exile, a European war bride, and a Chinese refugee. As we travel alongside these indelible characters, In the Shadow of Liberty explores how sites of rightlessness have evolved, and what their existence has meant for our body politic. Though these “black sites” exist out of view for the average American, their reach extends into all of our lives: the explosive growth of the for-profit prison industry traces its origins to the immigrant detention system, as does the emergence of Guantanamo and the gradual unraveling of the right to bail and the presumption of innocence. Through these narratives, we see how the changing political climate surrounding immigration has played out in individual lives, and at what cost. But as these stories demonstrate, it doesn’t have to be like this, and a better way might be possible.
Additionally, Minian has published articles in the Journal of American History, American Quarterly, and American Historical Review.
In 2020, Minian was awarded with the prestigious Andrew Carnegie Fellowship.
Minian's third book project, "No Man’s Lands: A New History of Immigration Restriction," examines how during the late Cold War and its aftermath, U.S. officials created new spaces and territories designed to prevent Latin American and Spanish-speaking Caribbean migrants from entering the United States. Rather than a thought-out and coherent project, these various spatial enterprises were designed haphazardly in response to particular incidents and migrations. -
Lloyd B. Minor, MD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThrough neurophysiological investigations of eye movements and neuronal pathways, Dr. Minor has identified adaptive mechanisms responsible for compensation to vestibular injury in a model system for studies of motor learning. Following his discovery of superior canal dehiscence, he published a description of the disorder’s clinical manifestations and related its cause to an opening in the bone covering of the superior canal. He subsequently developed a surgical procedure to correct the problem.

Azalia Mirhoseini
Assistant Professor of Computer Science
BioAzalia Mirhoseini is an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department at Stanford University. Professor Mirhoseini's research interest is in developing capable, reliable, and efficient AI systems for solving high-impact, real-world problems. Her work includes generalized learning-based methods for decision-making problems in systems and chip design, self-improving AI models through interactions with the world, and scalable deep learning optimization. Prior to Stanford, she spent several years in industry AI labs, including Anthropic and Google Brain. At Anthropic, she worked on advancing the capabilities and reliability of large language models. At Google Brain, she co-founded the ML for Systems team, with a focus on automating and optimizing computer systems and chip design. She received her BSc degree in Electrical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology and her PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Rice University. Alicia Mirza
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Pulmonary, Allergy & Critical Care Medicine
BioDr. Alicia Mirza is quadruple board-certified in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Pulmonary Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine. She is now an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine (PACCM) at Stanford, where she serves as Associate Director of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Program.
She has expertise across a breadth of pulmonary and intensive care domains, with her clinical and research interests centering on CF and bronchiectasis. She is a CF Foundation (CFF) Program for Adult Care Excellence grant awardee. She has worked on quality improvement projects in adult CF care, including initiatives in advanced care planning, pediatric to adult transitions, primary care utilization, and remote monitoring. She is involved in clinical trials as well as registry-based research in both CF and non-CF bronchiectasis.
Nationally, Dr. Mirza was elected to the CHEST Bronchiectasis Network, where she collaborates with experts across the country to expand education in bronchiectasis through podcasts, training modules, and lectures. An active educator, Dr. Mirza teaches Stanford medical students, residents, and fellows. She is engaged both locally and internationally through conference presentations at CHEST, California Thoracic Society, and the North American CF Conference.
She also serves as Co-director of Wellbeing for Stanford PACCM, where she is committed to advancing faculty wellness and fostering a culture of professional fulfillment. In both her clinical and academic work, she emphasizes a holistic approach to supporting patients and colleagues alike, with attention to the whole person and the systems that sustain their health and wellbeing. -

William Mitch
Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering
BioBill Mitch received a B.A. in Anthropology (Archaeology) from Harvard University in 1993. During his studies, he excavated at Mayan sites in Belize and surveyed sites dating from 2,000 B.C. in Louisiana. He switched fields by receiving a M.S. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley. He worked for 3 years in environmental consulting, receiving his P.E. license in Civil Engineering in California. Returning to UC Berkeley in 2000, he received his PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2003. He moved to Yale as an assistant professor after graduation. His dissertation received the AEESP Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award in 2004. At Yale, he serves as the faculty advisor for the Yale Student Chapter of Engineers without Borders. In 2007, he won a NSF CAREER Award. He moved to Stanford University as an associate professor in 2013.
Employing a fundamental understanding of organic chemical reaction pathways, his research explores links between public health, engineering and sustainability. Topics of current interest include:
Public Health and Emerging Carcinogens: Recent changes to the disinfection processes fundamental to drinking and recreational water safety are creating a host of highly toxic byproducts linked to bladder cancer. We seek to understand how these compounds form so we can adjust the disinfection process to prevent their formation.
Global Warming and Oceanography: Oceanic dissolved organic matter is an important global carbon component, and has important impacts on the net flux of CO2 between the ocean and atmosphere. We seek to understand some of the important abiotic chemical reaction pathways responsible for carbon turnover.
Sustainability and Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs): While PCBs have been banned in the US, we continue to produce a host of structurally similar chemicals. We seem to understand important chemical pathways responsible for POP destruction in the environment, so we can design less persistent and problematic chemicals in the future.
Engineering for Sustainable Wastewater Recycling: The shortage of clean water represents a critical challenge for the next century, and has necessitated the recycling of wastewater. We seek to understand ways of engineer this process in ways to minimize harmful byproduct formation.
Carbon Sequestration: We are evaluating the formation of nitrosamine and nitraminecarcinogens from amine-based carbon capture, as well as techniques to destroy any of these byproducts that form. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsBeverly Mitchell's research relates to the development of new therapies for hematologic malignancies, including leukemias and myelodsyplastic syndromes. She is interested in preclinical proof of principle studies on mechanisms inducing cell death and on metabolic targets involving nucleic acid biosynthesis in malignant cells. She is also interested in the translation of these studies into clinical trials.
