    BioJonathan Levin, a distinguished economist and academic leader, became Stanford University president on August 1, 2024. Previously, he was the Philip H. Knight Professor and Dean of the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Levin is widely recognized for his scholarship in microeconomics and industrial organization. He received the John Bates Clark Medal as the outstanding American economist under the age of 40. He currently serves as a member of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

    BioDr. Levin is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist with the Stanford Health Care Byers Eye Institute. He is also a clinical instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Levin has focused solely on plastic and reconstructive eye surgery since 1992. He evaluates and cares for conditions such as tear duct problems and eyelid problems, including eyelid growths and cancers. As an established expert, he uses the best techniques to improve eye health and confidence in facial appearance.

    Dr. Levin has published research findings in many peer-reviewed journals, including the American Journal of Ophthalmology and Archives of Ophthalmology. He has also shared his expertise at numerous ophthalmology conferences and in books such as Contemporary Issues in Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Surgical Procedures.

    He is a fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He also has a long history of teaching about ophthalmic procedures at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    BioDr. Deborah Jo Levine is a board-certified pulmonologist and lung transplantation and pulmonary hypertension specialist. She is a clinical professor of medicine in the Department of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Levine also serves as director of lung transplant outreach for Stanford Health Care.

    Dr. Levine is internationally recognized for her work in lung transplantation and pulmonary hypertension (PH). She has been instrumental in developing international guidelines for defining, diagnosing, and managing antibody-mediated rejection (AMR) after lung transplantation. She has served as chair of pulmonary AMR guidelines for the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation.

    Dr. Levine’s research interests include lung allograft monitoring and risk assessment. Her research has also included monitoring lung allograft health using donor-derived cell-free DNA (dd-cfDNA)—a technique pioneered at Stanford Medicine. She has received National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding as a clinical investigator. Dr. Levine is a co-chair of the ALAMO (AlloSure Lung Assessment and Metagenomics Outcomes) Study national registry. She has been involved in many clinical trials in lung transplantation and pulmonary hypertension.

    As a respected educator and researcher, Dr. Levine has led and contributed to dozens of abstracts, presentations, and peer-reviewed articles. She has also written several books and book chapters on pulmonary hypertension, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary vascular disorders, and lung transplantation.

    Dr. Levine is editor-in-chief for Advances in Pulmonary Hypertension, the quarterly journal of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association. She is an editorial board member of The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation and an ad hoc reviewer for several other industry journals. Dr. Levine also serves as a grant reviewer and section study reviewer for the American College of Chest Physicians and the American Society of Transplantation.

    Dr . Levine is a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and the American Society of Transplantation. She is also the chair of the Diffuse Lung Disease and Lung Transplant Network and the incoming vice chair of the Council of Networks for the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST).

    BioKaterina Levinson is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Iberian and Latin American Cultures at Stanford. She received her BA in Spanish and Great Texts (Baylor University), and a Masters in Spanish literature (University of Oxford). She completed her D.Phil from the University of Oxford in Medieval and Modern Languages (Spanish), which draws from research she conducted in Spain. Her doctoral thesis is entitled, "Iconographic Strength: Female Agency through Immaculist Devotion in Calderón’s Marian Autos Sacramentales." Her doctoral research elucidates early modern feminism through a historical, philosophical, and textual framework. Through analysis of the iconographic association of women with Mary's warrior prowess in the conquest of evil, her thesis argues that Calderón complicates notions of gendered virtue by applying virtues to women that were traditionally understood to be reserved for men. She previously held appointments as a Lecturer in ILAC at Stanford and as Stipendiary Lecturer of Medieval Spanish at St. Anne's College, Oxford.

    Her current research investigates the promotion of female authority in colonial drama and poetry. Drawing on the intersection of religion, visual art, and literature, she examines how Marian narratives in the Americas functioned as a vehicle for elevating women within the colonial sphere, revealing the ways in which devotional discourse became a site of female agency and cultural negotiation. Her primary research interests lie in early modern Hispanic drama and poetry, Mariology, moral philosophy and literature, women and gender, early modern sensory perception.

    BioSimon was born and raised in and around New York City. He moved to California to attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where he obtained undergraduate degrees in both political theory and neuroscience. Simon continued his education at UCLA where he attended the David Geffen School of Medicine. While a medical student he worked under the mentorship of Dr. Carlos Cepeda to investigate the cellular mechanisms underlying pediatric epilepsy. Additionally, under the mentorship of Dr. Ausaf Bari he created an MRI based structural atlas of the human brainstem. Simon is currently undergoing clinical training in neurologic surgery at Stanford University. He is interested in understanding how neural networks function and contribute to disease and how they can aid in developing novel treatment therapies. Outside of medicine, Simon enjoys spending time with his wife, going for hikes with their dog, traveling, listening to audiobooks, and running.

    BioIndra Levy received her Ph.D. in modern Japanese literature from Columbia University in 2001. She is the author of Sirens of the Western Shore: the Westernesque Femme Fatale, Translation, and Vernacular Style in Modern Japanese Literature (Columbia, 2006) and editor of Translation in Modern Japan (Routledge, 2009). She has served as Executive Director for the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies (IUC) since 2010. In 2022, she was named the inaugural recipient of the Irene Hirano Inouye Award from the Terasaki Center for Japanese Studies for her contributions to Japanese Studies. Her current work focuses on humor in Japanese literature, performance, and translation from the late 19th century to the mid-20th. Her research interests include modern Japanese literature and criticism; critical translation studies; gender and language; modern Japanese performance, especially in the Meiji and Taishō eras; and modern Japanese women’s intellectual history.

    BioRicardo Levy is an executive and entrepreneur whose career spans more than three decades of founding and building successful businesses. Born and raised in South America to a European immigrant family, he completed engineering studies in the United States at Stanford and Princeton before returning to South America to run a family business. In 1969 he sold the business and returned to the United States to complete his Ph.D. at Stanford in the field of catalytic chemistry. In 1974, after a number of years in the petroleum and petrochemical industry, he co-founded his first entrepreneurial venture, Catalytica, a research and development firm serving the chemical, pharmaceutical, and clean energy industries. The firm’s discoveries resulted in over one hundred patents and led to the formation of three companies, one of which became, under Levy’s leadership, the largest supplier to the pharmaceutical industry in North America and was sold to European firm DSM in 2000. He has served on several public and private Boards, is Lead Director of the Board of a private analytics software company, and serves on the Board of Aquarius Energy, Inc. From 2010 to 2016 served on the Advisory Board of the Santa Clara University Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship, a global incubator of social entrepreneurs. He continues to be a mentor for that program. He is a Lecturer at the Stanford University Chemical Engineering Department, where he teaches a course on entrepreneurship, leadership and new venture creation. He is the author of the book “Letters to a Young Entrepreneur: Succeeding in Business Without Losing at Life – A Leader’s Ongoing Journey” published in 2015. Throughout his life, Dr. Levy has pursued a keen interest in spirituality and personal growth and his conviction that a person’s inner beliefs and purpose are deeply linked to business success. He has continually applied his diverse studies to his roles as a business leader, mentor and teacher.

    BioRichard J. Levy, MD, FAAP is Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine and Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. He has been an NIH-funded clinician-scientist for over 20 years. His laboratory currently investigates the neurotoxic and cardiotoxic effects of anesthetics in the developing brain and developing heart, respectively. Dr. Levy specifically focuses on both the mechanisms of action of anesthetics within mitochondria. He is currently funded to study and develop a benzoquinone molecule as a novel anesthetic.     BioVivian Levy is Chief of Infectious Diseases at San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC), San Mateo County’s safety net hospital and clinic system in northern California since 2015 and the County’s STD Control Officer since 2006. San Mateo County has 760,000 persons and connects the urban centers of San Francisco and San Jose, California.
    Dr. Levy leads Stanford’s Internal Medicine outpatient Infectious Diseases rotation for Internal Medicine residents. She has served 2 terms as president of the California STD/HIV Controllers Association. From 2004-2008, she was the medical officer for the Chemoprophylaxis for HIV prevention in men study in Lima, Peru.
    In 2020, she was the San Mateo Medical Center site investigator for the Expanded Access Treatment Protocol: Remdesivir for the Treatment of SARS-CoV2 Infection. She began SMMC patient recruitment for Stanford outpatient COVID studies July 2020 with the goal of increasing historically underrepresented populations participation and access in COVID outpatient treatment trials.
    She has an undergraduate degree from Brown University (1989,) an MD from Rush University Medical College in Chicago (1994,) completed internship in Internal Medicine at Cook County Hospital in Chicago (1995) Internal Medicine residency at Northwestern University (1997) and an Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine fellowship at Stanford University (2000-2004.)

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy laboratory is focused on defining cellular and molecular mechanisms that limit T cell responses to vaccines and pathogens during normal early postnatal development and in cases of inherited genetic immunodeficiencies. We are also determinomg how these limitations in immunity can be overcome by using novel approaches for vaccine adjuvants for influenza vaccine and by using catalytically inactive Cas proteins for inducing endogenous gene expression.

    BioDr. Lewis is a board-certified, fellowship-trained specialist in cardiovascular medicine. He is the chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and a professor of cardiovascular medicine.

    Dr. Lewis is an esteemed clinician-scientist who specializes in the care of patients with advanced heart failure. He is an internationally recognized expert on heart failure, heart transplant, and quality of life for heart failure patients. He cares deeply about his patients as well as his colleagues, the hospital, and the School of Medicine. Dr. Lewis is committed to diversity and inclusion, as well as expanding Stanford clinical research initiatives.

    A fundamental principle of Dr. Lewis’ practice is his belief that “there is more to life than death,” that cardiovascular care should go beyond helping patients survive to also helping them enjoy the best possible quality of life.

    Dr. Lewis has deep expertise in conducting clinical trials examining diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to heart failure. He has done innovative work to create systems for incorporating quality of life measures for cardiovascular patients into electronic health records. This research has received support from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the National Institutes of Health.

    Much of his quality of life research has focused on patient-reported outcomes. Dr. Lewis emphasizes the importance of looking at how a disease, whether chronic or acute, impacts people’s ability to function and perform their activities of daily living. Strategies to improve patients’ well-being focus not only on their physical symptoms but also on depression, anxiety, exercise capacity, and ability to function in daily living.

    Dr. Lewis’ commitment to expanding clinical research initiatives will give patients more opportunities to participate in the clinical trials and access the latest care strategies that can translate into better outcomes. The goal is early access to the most advanced technology, pharmacology, and device therapy that can change outcomes for the better. He also envisions forming closer partnerships with community cardiologists and capitalizing further on Stanford’s proximity to and unique relationships with the digital technology leaders of Silicon Valley to enhance the use of digital technology for monitoring patients, optimizing treatment, and tracking outcomes.

    He has authored nearly 200 articles published in peer-reviewed journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Circulation, JAMA Cardiology, JAMA Internal Medicine, and many more. He is also on multiple editorial boards for cardiovascular journals and was an associate editor for Circulation–Heart Failure. In addition, he is an author of professional society clinical practice guidelines and scientific statements from both the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Food and Drug Administration.

    Dr. Lewis’ honors for clinical care, scholarship, and research include the Joel Gordon Miller Award for community service and leadership from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He also was one of the first recipients of the Minority Faculty Development Award, which recognizes the research potential of young physicians. Dr. Lewis has received a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to study the role of quality of life assessment in clinical decision making in patients with heart failure.

    He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the National American Heart Association (AHA) Research Committee. In addition, Dr. Lewis was as a member of the AHA Founders Affiliate Board of Directors, chair of the Council on Clinical Cardiology, and research chair of the Association of Black Cardiologists. He also serves on scientific committees to review grants for the AHA and on the FDA Task Force for the Standardization of Definitions for Endpoint Events in Cardiovascular Trials.

    BioMark Edward Lewis’s research deals with many aspects of Chinese civilization in the late pre-imperial, early imperial and middle periods (contemporary with the centuries in the West from classical Greece through the early Middle Ages), and with the problem of empire as a political and social form.

    His first book, Sanctioned Violence in Early China, studies the emergence of the first Chinese empires by examining the changing forms of permitted violence—warfare, hunting, sacrifice, punishments, and vengeance. It analyzes the interlinked evolution of these violent practices to reveal changes in the nature of political authority, in the units of social organization, and in the defining practices and attitudes of the ruling elites. It thus traces the changes that underlay the transformation of the Chinese polity from a league of city-states dominated by aristocratic lineages to a unified, territorial state governed by a supreme autocrat and his agents.

    His second book, Writing and Authority in Early China covers the same period from a different angle. It traces the evolving uses of writing to command assent and obedience, an evolution that culminated in the establishment of a textual canon as the foundation of imperial authority. The book examines the full range of writings employed in early China, including divinatory records, written communications with ancestors, government documents, collective writings of philosophical traditions, speeches attributed to historical figures, chronicles, verse anthologies, commentaries, and encyclopedic compendia. It shows how these writings in different ways served to form social groups, administer populations, control officials, invent new models of intellectual and political authority, and create an artificial language whose mastery generated power and whose graphs become potent, almost magical, objects.

    His third book, The Construction of Space in Early China, examines the formation of the Chinese empire through its reorganization and reinterpretation of its basic spatial units: the human body, the household, the city, the region, and the world. It shows how each higher unit—culminating in the empire—claimed to incorporate and transcend the units of the preceding level, while in practice remaining divided and constrained by the survival of the lower units, whose structures and tensions they reproduced. A companion volume, The Flood Myths of Early China, shows how these early Chinese ideas about the constituent elements of an ordered, human space—along with the tensions and divisions therein—were elaborated and dramatized in a set of stories about the re-creation of a structured world from a watery chaos that had engulfed it.

    In addition to these specialist monographs, Lewis has written the first three volumes of a six-volume survey of the entire history of imperial China: The Early Chinese Empires: Qin and Han, China Between Empires: The Northern and Southern Dynasties, and China’s Cosmopolitan Empire: The Tang Dynasty. These volumes serve as introductions to the major periods of Chinese history for non-specialists, and as background readings to introductory surveys. In addition to recounting the major political events, they devote chapters to the most important aspects of the society of each period: geographic background, cities, rural society, kinship, religion, literature, and law.

    He has published a new monograph, Honor and Shame in Early China, which traces evolving ideas about honor and shame in the Warring States and early empires in order to understand major developments in the social history of the period. It examines the transformation of elites and the emergence of new groups through scrutinizing differing claims to “honor” (and consequent re-definitions of what was “shameful”) entailed in claiming a public role without necessarily being a noble or an employee of the state.

    BioMartin W. Lewis is a senior lecturer in international history at Stanford University. He graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a degree in Environmental Studies in 1979, and received a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in geography in 1987. His dissertation, and first book, examined the interplay among economic development, environmental degradation, and cultural change in the highlands of northern Luzon in the Philippines. Subsequently, he turned his attention to issues of global geography, writing (with Karen Wigen) The Myth of Continents: A Critique of Metageography (University of California Press, 1997). He is also the co-author of a world geography textbook, Diversity Amid Globalization: World Regions, Environment, Development (Prentice Hall), and is the former associate editor of The Geographical Review. Martin W. Lewis taught at the George Washington University and then at Duke University, where he was co-director of the program in Comparative Area Studies, before coming to Stanford University in the fall of 2002.     BioDr. Lewis specializes in autoimmune skin diseases. He completed medical school at The George Washington University School of Medicine and dermatology residency at The University of Rochester, where he was chief resident. He also completed a Master’s of Public Health at Johns Hopkins and a fellowship in autoimmune connective tissue diseases at Stanford University.

    He believes multidisciplinary care is key to treat patients with systemic inflammatory diseases. He holds a rheumatology-dermatology clinic with a rheumatologist, Dr. Janice Lin, as well as a dermatology-ophthalmology clinic with an ophthalmologist, Dr. Christopher Ta, and is the dermatologist for the sarcoidosis program, all with this primary goal of providing high quality, collaborative, patient-centered care.

    BioSean Hardesty Lewis is a researcher in embodied AI and robot perception who builds large-scale data, simulation, and sensing systems for world models and decision-making. He is an M.S. student in Information Systems at Cornell Tech, where he is advised by Wendy Ju and Anthony Townsend. His research focuses on world models that connect perception to planning for autonomous systems, with interests in embodied scene understanding, generative simulation, semantic mapping, and uncertainty-aware decision-making. He develops scalable multimodal datasets, real-time sensing systems, and interactive 3D environments, and releases open tools and evaluations that support reproducible research. Before joining Cornell, he earned a B.S. in Mathematics from The University of Texas at Austin, where he conducted research in the Urban Information Lab with Junfeng Jiao. His work has appeared in the proceedings of SIGGRAPH and at AAAI and NeurIPS workshops, and his research is supported by the NSF, the City of Austin, and Dell Technologies. He also serves as a Graduate Mentor for Stanford AI4ALL.

    BioA native of the south Bay Area, Dr. Lewis brings 25 years of professional experience in the field of otolaryngology. He graduated with highest honors from UC Davis in biochemistry, and he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society at the University of Southern California School of Medicine. He is Board Certified in Otolaryngology, a Qualified Medical Evaluator, a licensed Hearing Aid Dispenser, and a licensed X-Ray Supervisor/Operator. Dr. Lewis is honored to be past-president of the Santa Clara County Medical Association and past Chief of the Medical Staff at Good Samaritan Hospital.

    Dr. Lewis treats both children and adults for general ear, nose and throat diseases. He has a special interest in hearing and balance problems, including chronic ear infections, sudden hearing loss, balance problems and vertigo.

    When not working, Dr. Lewis has an eclectic mix of interests. He enjoys sporting events and activities, including running, swimming, cycling, golfing and basketball. He finds satisfaction in do-it-yourself home projects, especially woodworking. Above all, he loves to get out into the great outdoors and commune with nature.

    BioDr. Alice Huai-Yu Li is an anesthesiologist and pain management specialist at Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, Division of Pain Management at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Li specializes in headache and orofacial pain conditions, offering advanced, personalized care for patients with complex and often debilitating pain syndromes. Her clinical expertise spans a wide range of disorders, including temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD), migraine, trigeminal neuralgia, and other forms of headache and orofacial pain.

    She collaborates closely with her colleagues in dentistry, neurosurgery, otorhinolaryngology (ENT), neurology, and oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care. With this interdisciplinary approach, she works with each patient to help them feel better and improve their daily life. This includes creating a tailored treatment plan with healthy lifestyle modifications, prescription medications, and targeted procedures with fluoroscopic, ultrasound, and/or stimulation guidance.

    Dr. Li’s research focuses on advancing the treatment of migraine and orofacial pain. She leads studies on cutting-edge neuromodulation technologies for both migraine prevention and acute rescue, as well as ultrasound- and stimulation-guided procedures to relieve TMD symptoms. Her work also includes developing a treatment algorithm for trigeminal neuralgia and exploring the use of large language models to help clinicians diagnose complex headache and orofacial pain disorders.

    Dr. Li has authored more than a dozen peer-reviewed publications and has presented her work at national and international conferences for organizations including the American Academy of Pain Medicine, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the North American Neuromodulation Society.

    BioDr. Li is a board-certified, fellowship-trained gastroenterologist with Stanford Health Care. He is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    A therapeutic endoscopy specialist, Dr. Li received fellowship training in gastroenterology, advanced endoscopy, and endoscopic surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology.

    Dr. Li specializes in advanced endoscopic procedures. His areas of expertise include endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), enteroscopy, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). He also specializes in esophageal peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), gastric peroral endoscopic myotomy (GPOEM), and Zenker’s diverticulum peroral endoscopic myotomy (ZPOEM).

    In addition, he treats gastrointestinal cancers, including gastric (stomach) cancer and colon cancer. He is dedicated to helping patients by integrating leading-edge research and innovations with compassionate, patient-centered clinical care.

    Dr. Li’s research interests include gastric cancer, innovations in advanced endoscopy and endoscopic surgery, and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and other computational techniques for prevention, diagnoses, and treatments.

    Dr. Li has published articles in the World Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and Endoscopy International Open. He has presented at national and international conferences held in Las Vegas; Washington, D.C.; and Seoul, Korea. In his many presentations, he has covered topics such as the prevention of gastric cancer and prevention of post-ERCP pancreatitis.

    Dr. Li is a member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association, and American College of Physicians.
