Leah Backhus
Thelma and Henry Doelger Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery
BioLeah Backhus trained in general surgery at the University of Southern California and cardiothoracic surgery at the University of California Los Angeles. She practices at Stanford Hospital and is Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the VA Palo Alto. Her surgical practice consists of general thoracic surgery with special emphasis on thoracic oncology and minimally invasive surgical techniques. She is also Co-Director of the Thoracic Surgery Clinical Research Program, and has grant funding through the Veterans Affairs Administration and NIH. Her current research interests are in imaging surveillance following treatment for lung cancer and cancer survivorship. She is a member of the National Lung Cancer Roundtable of the American Cancer Society and the Task Group on Health Equity. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. As an educator, Dr. Backhus is the Associate Program Director for the Thoracic Track Residency and is former Chair of the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Thoracic Surgery.

Edward Bender
Clinical Professor, Cardiothoracic Surgery
BioDr. Edward Bender specializes in the treatment of adult cardiac abnormalities, including ischemic heart disease, structural and valvular disease, and arrhythmias. Additionally, he has an interest and expertise in General Thoracic and Vascular surgery. Dr. Bender currently works with organizations within the medical community to develop software to aid in the teaching and practice of medicine.

Mark Francis Berry, MD
Mylavarapu Rogers Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery
BioDr. Berry joined the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Stanford in August 2014. He came to Stanford from Duke University, where he had most recently served as Associate Professor. He received his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine after receiving bachelors and masters degrees in Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Duke University Medical Center after performing a residency in General Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. His Cardiothoracic Surgical training included a year dedicated to Minimally Invasive General Thoracic Surgery, a period that also included an American Association for Thoracic Surgery sponsored Traveling Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Berry practices all aspects of thoracic surgery, including procedures for benign and malignant conditions of the lung, esophagus, and mediastinum. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive techniques, and has extensive experience in treating thoracic surgical conditions using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgical (VATS), laparoscopic, robotic, endoscopic, and bronchoscopic approaches. He serves as the co-Director of the Stanford Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery Center (SMITS), and has both directed and taught in several minimally invasive thoracic surgery courses.
Dr. Berry also has a Masters of Health Sciences in Clinical Research from Duke University. His clinical research activities mirror his clinical interests and activities in optimizing short-term and long-term outcomes of patients with thoracic surgical conditions. He has more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, most of which are related to both the use of minimally invasive thoracic surgical techniques as well as evaluating outcomes after treatment of thoracic malignancies. His clinical practice and his research both focus on choosing the most appropriate treatment and approach for patients based on the individual characteristics of the patient and their disease process. -

BioMary Sheridan Bilbao, PA-C, FAPACVS, is an accomplished advanced practice provider specializing in Cardiothoracic Surgery. She earned both her Undergraduate degree and Masters of Physician Assistant Studies at Marywood University. With extensive experience in cardiothoracic surgery, Mary became an integral part of our team in 2014.
Her expertise spans both in-patient and outpatient care, where she actively participates in surgical procedures and contributes to various studies and laboratory research. Mary's proficiency extends to open and endoscopic vein harvesting, radial artery harvesting, valve replacements, minimally invasive aortic and mitral valve repair/replacements, ascending aorta/aortic dissection/aortic arch repair/replacements, redo surgeries, coronary artery bypass grafting (off and on-pump), robotic-assisted minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting, minimally invasive myocardial bridge unroofing, heart/lung transplants, VADs, and ECMO.
Beyond her clinical duties, Mary plays a crucial role in training new PAs, NPs, APP fellows, residents, and medical students in various surgical skills. In the clinic, she performs history & physicals, pre-op evaluations, orders/interprets studies & labs, and coordinates in-patient and out-patient care.
Since January 2015, Mary has been the driving force behind the Stanford Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery's Human Biorepository Tissue Bank. This initiative has amassed over 1,000 human cardiothoracic tissue samples, fostering approved studies to advance cardiovascular and pulmonary disease research. Collaborating with over 30 partners and Stanford labs, Mary's goal is to facilitate research by providing cardiothoracic tissue samples to researchers and scientists across Stanford Medicine.
Currently, Mary holds the position of Principal Academic and Clinical Integration Developer in the CT Surgery Department, further highlighting her leadership role in our institution. In this capacity, she plays a pivotal role in curating and developing marketing materials and outreach strategies for the department. Mary's dedication extends beyond clinical excellence; she actively contributes to fostering academic growth and enhancing the department's visibility. Her strategic approach to marketing ensures that the department's achievements and advancements in cardiothoracic surgery are effectively communicated to the broader medical community and the public, reinforcing our commitment to excellence in patient care, research, and education.
Furthermore, Mary has been an esteemed member of Dr. Joseph Woo's Stanford Advanced Cardiovascular Therapeutics and Surgical Biomechanics Translational Research Laboratory (Woo Lab) since 2012. Elan Chanel Burton, MD, MHA
Clinical Associate Professor, Cardiothoracic Surgery
BioDr. Burton is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon. She is also a clinical associate professor in the Stanford University School of Medicine Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Section Chief for Stanford Medicine Affiliates.
She offers her patients exceptional expertise in advanced cardiothoracic surgical techniques. For each patient, she develops a customized, comprehensive, and compassionate care plan.
Dr. Burton has completed specialized training in robotic technique for minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB). This procedure enables surgical access to the heart with a smaller incision than other coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) procedures.
In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Burton has conducted research on health disparities in cardiovascular disease, diversity in radiology and molecular imaging, and other topics. She received an innovation research grant from the National Science Foundation for her work on an app for emotional support during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Burton has made presentations to her peers as a guest lecturer on subjects including coronary artery disease, primary cardiac tumors, and minimally invasive cardiac surgery. In addition, she has made presentations to the Western Thoracic Surgical Association, American Heart Association, International Conference on Clinical Ethics and Consultation, and other organizations.
Dr. Burton has published articles on advanced surgical techniques as well as issues such as balancing work and family during the COVID-19 pandemic, plus health disparities, biases in healthcare, and social determinants of health. Her work has appeared in the JAMA Network Open, Journal of Cardiac Surgery, JTCVS Techniques, International Social Work, and elsewhere.
Dr. Burton has earned honors including the Coleman Connolly Award in Thoracic Surgery, which recognizes the exemplary efforts of thoracic surgery residents. She also won the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons Resident Achievement Award and the Dr. Albert G. Marrangoni Research Award.
She is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American College of Cardiology, American College of Physicians–American Society of Internal Medicine, Lillehei Surgical Society, Women in Thoracic Surgery, Western Thoracic Surgical Association, American Society of Professionals in Patient Safety, Women Health Care Executives, Association of Women Surgeons, Society of Black Academic Surgeons, and American Association of Healthcare Administrative Management.

Maria Elizabeth Currie, MD, PhD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Cardiothoracic Surgery
BioDr. Currie is a board-certified, fellowship-trained cardiothoracic surgeon. She is also a clinical assistant professor at Stanford University School of Medicine. With subspecialty training in heart failure, Dr. Currie treats all forms of cardiomyopathy, ischemic heart disease, and valvular heart disease. She performs heart transplant, lung transplant, and combined heart-lung transplant procedures as part of a multidisciplinary team. She excels at valve surgery and the implantation of mechanical circulatory support systems.
Dr. Currie welcomes referrals from cardiologists and primary care physicians as early as possible when cardiovascular disease is suspected. Understanding that early intervention can prevent later complications, she invites communication about screening, diagnostics, and treatment strategies.
For each patient, Dr. Currie’s goal is to achieve the best possible outcome using the most advanced minimally invasive cardiac care techniques and technology available. Combined with technical expertise and a focus on excellent clinical outcomes, Dr. Currie delivers empathetic, thoughtful patient care. She ensures that patients are well informed about what they can expect both before and after their surgical procedure.
Dr. Currie is passionate about improving the safety of cardiac surgery. Her research includes translational studies on new ways to visualize anatomic structures that are difficult to see during minimally invasive surgery. One published study investigated the use of augmented reality (AR) guided by transesophageal echocardiography in minimally invasive mitral valve repair. Her work has appeared in The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, The International Journal of Medical Robotics and Computer Assisted Surgery, Transplant Immunology, and other peer reviewed publications.
Dr. Currie’s interest in technological advances is rooted in her commitment to the evolution of technology and technique in the fast-changing, relatively young field of cardiac surgery. Also driving her interest is her PhD background in biomedical engineering. She has made presentations on the use of AR systems, 3D visualization technology, and robotics-assisted surgical procedures at the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Annual Meeting, International Society for Minimally Invasive Surgery Annual Scientific Meeting, and other conferences.
Dr. Currie has won numerous awards for her research achievements and scholarship. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. She is also a member of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery, Women in Thoracic Surgery, and the Association of Women Surgeons. Irmina A. Elliott, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Cardiothoracic Surgery
BioDr. Elliott is a thoracic surgeon and clinical assistant professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine. She provides the complete spectrum of surgical care for lung cancer, esophageal cancer, mediastinal tumors, and more through the Stanford Health Care Thoracic Cancer Program. She specializes in minimally invasive, including robotic, approaches to thoracic surgery.
Dr. Elliott received fellowship training from Stanford University. She completed her residency at UCLA Medical Center.
Her research has received support from the National Institutes of Health. She has investigated cancer cell response to replication stress, outcomes in patients undergoing hyperthermic intrathoracic chemotherapy (HITHOC) for mesothelioma, complications after esophageal surgery, lymph node involvement in patients with carcinoid tumors of the lung, advanced techniques in robotic surgery, and other topics.
She has authored articles that have appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Annals of Thoracic Surgery, JAMA Surgery, and other peer-reviewed publications. She also has contributed to textbooks including the content on social disparities in lung cancer for the book Social Disparities in Thoracic Surgery.
Dr. Elliott has made presentations to her peers at meetings of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, Society of Surgical Oncology, Western Thoracic Surgical Association, and other organizations. Brandon Alan Guenthart

He specializes in providing leading-edge surgical treatment for people with cancer and end-stage heart and lung disease. He performs the full range of surgical procedures ranging from minimally invasive thoracic surgery to heart and lung transplantation. Dr. Guenthart practices all aspects of thoracic surgery, including procedures for benign and malignant conditions of the airway, lung, mediastinum, esophagus, and foregut. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive techniques and has extensive experience in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgical (VATS), laparoscopic, robotic, endoscopic, and bronchoscopic approaches.
Dr. Guenthart earned his medical degree at Temple University School of Medicine. He completed general surgery residency at Cornell and a post-doctoral research fellowship in tissue bioengineering at Columbia University in the Laboratory for Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering. He then completed cardiothoracic surgery fellowship and advanced fellowship training in cardiothoracic transplantation and mechanical circulatory support at Stanford University.
Dr. Guenthart has conducted research supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, Stanford University School of Medicine, and Columbia University. Dr. Guenthart has a particular interest in end-stage lung disease and his research focuses on lung perfusion and bioengineering strategies to promote lung recovery and regeneration. He has published in peer-reviewed journals such as Nature Medicine, Nature Biomedical Engineering, the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation. He has made numerous presentations to his peers at national conferences and given invited talks on patient selection, organ allocation, and other aspects of transplantation.

Frank Hanley

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsHis research and clinical work focuses on the development of interventional techniques for fetal and neonatal treatment of congenital heart disease, pulmonary, vascular physiology, and the neurologic impact of open-heart surgery. He developed and pioneered the unifocalization procedure, in which a single procedure is used to repair a complex and life-threatening congenital heart defect rather than several staged open-heart surgeries as performed by other surgeons.

William Hiesinger, MD
Associate Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery (Adult Cardiac Surgery)
BioDr. Hiesinger is a board-certified, fellowship-trained specialist in adult cardiac surgery. He is also an associate professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Hiesinger’s clinical focus encompasses the full spectrum of cardiothoracic conditions and treatment approaches, such as heart transplantation, mitral and aortic valve repair, surgical treatment for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, coronary artery bypass, and complex thoracic aortic procedures. He serves as Surgical Director of the Stanford Mechanical Circulatory Support Program, where he leads and directs the surgical implantation of ventricular assist devices (VADs) in patients with end-stage heart failure.
The National Institutes of Health and the Thoracic Surgery Foundation have awarded funds to support Dr. Hiesinger’s research. In the Stanford Cardiothoracic Therapeutics and Surgery Laboratory, Dr. Hiesinger's research spans the disciplines of computer science and cardiovascular biology, and he endeavors to build novel foundational deep learning systems designed to better represent and process high-dimensional inputs and apply these systems towards clinical problems. Additionally, his lab investigates bioengineered devices, tissue engineering, and angiogenic cytokine therapy for the treatment of heart failure.
He has published extensively and his work has appeared in Nature Communications, Nature Machine Intelligence, the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation, Circulation Heart Failure, the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Journal of Vascular Surgery, and elsewhere.
He teaches courses on cardiothoracic surgery skills. He also advises surgeons of the future.
Dr. Hiesinger has won awards for his research and scholarship, including the Surgical Resident of the Year Award, Jonathan E. Rhoads Research Award, Clyde F. Baker Research Prize, and I.S. Ravdin Prize, all from his alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania. He was a finalist for the Vivien Thomas Young Investigator Award from the American Heart Association.
Dr. Hiesinger is a member of the American Association For Thoracic Surgery and serves on the Cardiac Surgery Biology Club. He is also a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and serves on the Workforce on Surgical Treatment of End-Stage Cardiopulmonary Disease national committee as well as the American Heart Association Council for Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery. -

I also completed an intern year in Pediatrics resident at Boston Children’s Hospital before transitioning to cardiothoracic surgery. I received my MD from Harvard Medical School in the Health Sciences and Technology program joint with MIT. I trained as a biomedical engineering at the Johns Hopkins University with a focus in instrumentation.
I've interests in medical devices spanning from assistive robotics, surgical devices, to point of care devices. I have extensive experience working in the electronics and coding aspect of device development.
My long term goal is to become a congenital cardiovascular surgeon and improve the field of transplantation (partial and whole), congenital cardiac surgery techniques, and congenital mechanical circulatory support. This vocation comes from my personal experience receiving a heart transplant in 1999. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Huang's laboratory aims to understand the chemical and mechanical interactions between extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins and pluripotent stem cells that regulate vascular and myogenic differentiation. The fundamental insights of cell-matrix interactions are applied towards stem cell-based therapies with respect to improving cell survival and regenerative capacity, as well as engineered vascularized tissues for therapeutic transplantation.

He currently serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford Hospital and is a surgeon member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS). Dr. Leon's clinical and research specialties involve the surgical management of cardiopulmonary failure, heart valve disease, and ischemic heart disease, as well as stem cell therapy for myocardial infarction.

Douglas Liou

BioDr. Liou is a local product, having grown up in Salinas and graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a degree in Molecular and Cell Biology. He received his M.D. from New York Medical College and completed his General Surgery training at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. At Cedars, he was recognized for his excellence in clinical care and research with numerous awards and publications. Dr. Liou recently completed his 2 years of Thoracic Surgery training at Stanford, during which time he proved to be an outstanding physician and surgeon and a dedicated clinical researcher.
Dr. Liou’s expertise includes all surgical diseases of the lung, mediastinum, esophagus, chest wall, and diaphragm, with particular interest in thoracic oncology and minimally invasive surgical techniques. He has extensive experience with minimally invasive and open management of lung and esophageal cancer, mediastinal tumors, and benign esophageal disease. Dr. Liou's primary research focus has been on clinical outcomes in thoracic oncology and quality improvement.

James Longoria, MD

BioDr. Longoria is a board-certified, fellowship-trained cardiothoracic surgeon. He is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Deeply accomplished in all facets of complex adult cardiothoracic procedures, Dr. Longoria is a high-volume surgeon with more than 20 years of experience and an exceptionally low mortality and complication rate.
Dr. Longoria’s surgical experience includes complex mitral valve and tricuspid valve repair, coronary artery bypass grafting, adult congenital repair, as well as procedures for high risk VAD patients. He performs cardiac transplantation, carotid endarterectomy, and implantation of all FDA-approved mechanical circulatory support devices. Additionally, he performs catheter-based valvular procedures (such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or TAVR) and open and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for pulmonary surgical procedures.
He has an applied interest in atrial fibrillation (AFib) and is a nationally recognized expert in the minimally invasive surgical treatment of Atrial Fibrillation (AFib). Dr. Longoria was issued a method patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for developing the TTMaze (Totally Thoracoscopic) procedure that is central to the Dual Epicardial Endocardial Persistent (DEEP) AFib clinical trial.
Before joining Stanford, Dr. Longoria was the surgical director of cardiac ablation at a prominent AFib center certified by the Society of Chest Pain Centers. He holds patents for a synthetic chord used to connect tissue and for specialized methods he developed to treat cardiac arrhythmias.
At Stanford, Dr. Longoria brings a commitment to patientcentric, personalized care. He is committed to making the experience of surgery as pleasant as possible for his patients. For his outcomes and high patient satisfaction ratings, Dr. Longoria has earned awards and recognition, including being named a Top Doctor of Sacramento by his peers for the last five years in a row. He has also been an honoree of the President’s Award for patient satisfaction by the Sutter Independent Physicians.
Dr. Longoria has published articles on genetic variants associated with atrial fibrillation, thoracoscopic left atrial appendage clipping, radiofrequency ablation, and other topics. His work has appeared in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology, and elsewhere.
He has made numerous presentations on atrial fibrillation surgery and other topics at conferences including the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Thoracic Surgery, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation.
Dr. Longoria is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and American College of Cardiology. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Western Thoracic Surgical Association, the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery, and the Heart Rhythm Society. -
Natalie Shaubie Lui

BioDr. Lui studied physics as an undergraduate at Harvard before attending medical school at Johns Hopkins. She completed a general surgery residency at the University of California San Francisco, which included two years of research in the UCSF Thoracic Oncology Laboratory and completion of a Master in Advanced Studies in clinical research. Dr. Lui went on to hold a fellowship in Thoracic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, during which she participated in visiting rotations at Memorial Sloan Kettering and the Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Lui’s surgical practice consists of general thoracic surgery with a focus on thoracic oncology and robotic thoracic surgery. Her research interests include intraoperative molecular imaging for lung cancer localization, increasing rates of lung cancer screening, and using artificial intelligence to predict lung cancer recurrence. She is the recipient of the Donald B. Doty Educational Award in 2019 from the Western Thoracic Surgical Association, the Dwight C. McGoon Award for teaching from the Thoracic Surgery Residents Association in 2020, and the Carolyn E. Reed Traveling Fellowship from the Thoracic Surgery Foundation and Women in Thoracic Surgery in 2022. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur lab aims to understand the biomechanics that govern a wide spectrum of congenital heart defects, and how those biomechanics change with contemporary operative repair strategies. We simulate operations virtually via CFD, and in ex vivo and in vivo animal models, and analyze how the changes we make alter fluid flow, pressure, and stresses throughout the system. We hope that these experiments can impact and optimize existing techniques that translate quickly to the operating room.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsCardiac and heart valve disease with experimental laboratory large animal projects focused on the investigation of left ventricular and cardiac mechanics, bioenergetics, and LV and mitral valve physiology and pathophysiology. Current thrust is aimed at understanding the mitral valve and subvalvular mitral apparatus and transmural LV wall strains, thickening, and myolaminar fiber-sheet mechanics.
Clinical research interests include thoracic aortic diseases (aortic dissection, aneurysm) and cardiac valvular disease, including surgical treatment, endovascular thoracic aortic stent-graft repair, mitral valve repair, and valve-sparing aortic root replacement. -

Yoshikazu Ono

BioYoshikazu Ono is a pediatric cardiovascular surgeon who is board certified by The Japanese Board of Cardiovascular Surgery.
He graduated from Nagoya City University in 2015 and began his internship at Nagoya City East Medical Center. He then completed his residency in cardiovascular surgery at the National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center. He completed a fellowship in pediatric cardiovascular surgery at the same institution after a three-year residency.
His main interests are congenital cardiac defects and mechanical support in children. He is dedicated to improving the safety and durability of surgical treatments and ventricular assist devices for these patients. -

Yellappa Palagani
Postdoctoral Scholar, Cardiothoracic Surgery
BioYellappa Palagani is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford University. In Dr Ma's lab, he is developing an MRI-compatible mock circulatory loop and cardiac phantoms to simulate common congenital heart defects. Prior to joining Stanford, he was a Postdoctoral Associate in Cardiac Surgery at Yale University from April 2021 to March 2023, where he worked on left ventricular assist devices and smart inductive stents. In August 2020, he received his Ph.D. in Electronics Engineering from Kyungpook National University, South Korea. During his Ph.D., he worked on wirelessly powered cardiac pacemakers and wearable cardiac arrhythmia indicators.
