Gauri Desai

BioDr. Gauri Desai is a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the Female Athlete Science and Translational Research Program (FASTR). She is a biomechanist, with a research focus on female-specific biomechanical risk factors for sport-related injuries. She integrates biomechanics principles with physiology to provide an all-round perspective on improving performance and mitigating injury risk in female athletes. Dr. Desai's research complements human subject experiments with insights from computer modeling and simulation, to answer research questions that are challenging to address via human subject research studies alone. Beyond research, she is an active contributor to the sports science community through mentorship and advocacy for women in sport.

BioI am a radiologic data systems engineer at Stanford Medicine Children's Health, helping develop and implement data systems for radiologists with the aim to improve diagnostic accuracy and clinical outcomes.
My previous role was as a senior research engineer at Stanford School of Medicine – Radiology, where I was applying deep learning techniques to enhance the detection and classification of various cancer types in medical images.
I was initially trained as an engineer and research scientist – with an MS in Computer Science, PhD in Cognitive and Neural Systems, and postdoctoral training in computational neuroscience and human brain imaging. More recently, I completed a Professional Certificate in Data Engineering and additional training in machine learning and AI.
Over the course of my career, I have designed, built, and coded computational methods for data analysis, collected and analyzed a range of scientific and clinical data, and effectively communicated research findings to diverse audiences. -

BioJoseph M. DeSimone is the Sanjiv Sam Gambhir Professor of Translational Medicine and Chemical Engineering at Stanford University. He holds appointments in the Departments of Radiology and Chemical Engineering with courtesy appointments in the Department of Chemistry and in Stanford’s Graduate School of Business.
The DeSimone laboratory's research efforts are focused on developing innovative, interdisciplinary solutions to complex problems centered around advanced polymer 3D fabrication methods. In Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, the lab is pursuing new capabilities in digital 3D printing, as well as the synthesis of new polymers for use in advanced additive technologies. In Translational Medicine, research is focused on exploiting 3D digital fabrication tools to engineer new vaccine platforms, enhanced drug delivery approaches, and improved medical devices for numerous conditions, with a current major focus in pediatrics. Complementing these research areas, the DeSimone group has a third focus in Entrepreneurship, Digital Transformation, and Manufacturing.
Before joining Stanford in 2020, DeSimone was a professor of chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and of chemical engineering at North Carolina State University. He is also Co-founder, Board Chair, and former CEO (2014 - 2019) of the additive manufacturing company, Carbon. DeSimone is responsible for numerous breakthroughs in his career in areas including green chemistry, medical devices, nanomedicine, and 3D printing. He has published over 350 scientific articles and is a named inventor on over 200 issued patents. Additionally, he has mentored 80 students through Ph.D. completion in his career, half of whom are women and members of underrepresented groups in STEM.
In 2016 DeSimone was recognized by President Barack Obama with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the highest U.S. honor for achievement and leadership in advancing technological progress. He has received numerous other major awards in his career, including the U.S. Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award (1997); the American Chemical Society Award for Creative Invention (2005); the Lemelson-MIT Prize (2008); the NIH Director’s Pioneer Award (2009); the AAAS Mentor Award (2010); the Heinz Award for Technology, the Economy and Employment (2017); the Wilhelm Exner Medal (2019); the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award (2019 U.S. Overall National Winner); and the Harvey Prize in Science and Technology (2020). He is one of only 25 individuals elected to all three branches of the U.S. National Academies (Sciences, Medicine, Engineering). DeSimone received his B.S. in Chemistry in 1986 from Ursinus College and his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1990 from Virginia Tech. -

Clinical Professor, Emergency MedicineBioLauren Destino, MD, is the Associate Division Chief of the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Division and co-Medical Director of Acute Care and Case Management at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford (LPCHS) and a Clinical Professor at Stanford University. She was a site co-Investigator for the I-PASS study at Stanford and the site Principal Investigator for the PCORI grant, Bringing I-PASS to the Bedside: A Communication Bundle to Improve Patient Safety and Experience. She is involved in a number of quality and process improvement related activities at LPCHS. She has led trainee education in quality and performance improvement and is a fellow in the Stanford Medicine Center for Improvement. Her research interests include communication among the care team (inclusive of patients and families), patient flow throughout the hospital, and value centered improvement.

Gayle Deutsch, PhD, ABPP-CN

BioDr. Gayle Deutsch is a board-certified, fellowship-trained neuropsychologist with Stanford Health Care.
Dr. Deutsch is the lead neuropsychologist at the Stanford Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. She evaluates thinking and memory in a wide variety of neurological disorders, including conditions that damage brain cells (neurodegenerative disorders), such as Alzheimer’s disease. She also works with movement disorders, including Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor. In addition, she treats myotonic dystrophy, which causes muscle weakness and wasting, and conditions where the immune system attacks the nervous system (neuroimmunological disorders), such as multiple sclerosis.
Dr. Deutsch collaborates on research projects with Stanford University School of Medicine and the Mormino and Wagner Labs at Stanford University. Her work aims to understand cognitive changes in neurological disorders, particularly neurodegenerative disorders, epilepsy, myotonic dystrophy, and multiple sclerosis. Previously, Dr. Deutsch explored how temporal lobe epilepsy affects memory and how specialists can better understand and evaluate memory changes in people with seizure disorders.
Dr. Deutsch has published her findings in leading peer-reviewed journals, such as Alzheimer’s & Dementia, Neurology, Journal of Neuroscience, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. She has also written book chapters on learning disabilities as part of a pediatric neuropsychology handbook. Given her deep expertise, Dr. Deutsch has lectured on a range of topics in aging, epilepsy, myotonic dystrophy, and learning disabilities. -

Current Role at StanfordDr. Rebecca Deutscher is a Senior Research Associate at Stanford's Center to Support Excellence in Teaching (CSET) and has worked at the Graduate School of Education since 2014. She serves as a project director and researcher on a variety of projects including a digital personalized learning professional development program, a literacy and social-emotional curriculum project, a high school teacher professional development study, and several Research-Practice Partnership projects. Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy main research interests lie in the areas of theoretical condensed matter physics and computational physics. My research effort focuses on using the tools of computational physics to understand quantum materials. Fortunately, we are poised in an excellent position as the speed and cost of computers have allowed us to tackle heretofore unaddressed problems involving interacting systems. The goal of my research is to understand electron dynamics via a combination of analytical theory and numerical simulations to provide insight into materials of relevance to energy science. My group carries out numerical simulations on SIMES’ high-performance supercomputer and US and Canadian computational facilities. The specific focus of my group is the development of numerical methods and theories of photon-based spectroscopies of strongly correlated materials.

Shazia Dharssi, MD

BioDr. Shazia Dharssi is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained oculoplastic and reconstructive surgeon with Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology, Division of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Dharssi specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the eyelid and surrounding structures of the orbit. She specializes in advanced oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery, including both functional and cosmetic eyelid surgery, tear duct surgery, and orbital surgeries. Her expertise also includes diagnosing and treating facial nerve palsy, ptosis, thyroid eye disease, ocular cancers, and skin cancer that affects the eyes. Dr. Dharssi is dedicated to providing personalized, high-quality care to achieve the best possible outcomes for her patients.
Dr. Dharssi’s research focuses on applying deep learning and related computational tools to improve the diagnosis and treatment of ocular diseases, including age-related macular degeneration. She is particularly interested in developing technologies that enhance precision, efficiency, and patient outcomes in ophthalmic care. Her long-term goal is to integrate these innovations into the field of oculoplastic surgery to advance both functional and reconstructive outcomes.
Dr. Dharssi has published her research in peer-reviewed journals, such as Ophthalmic Epidemiology, Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Journal of Academic Ophthalmology, and Ophthalmology.
