Murray Connelly Cutforth
Affiliate, Mechanical Engineering - Mechanics and Computation
BioMurray Cutforth is a research scientist on the PSAAP III project at the Center for Turbulence Research. He works with Professor Eric Darve on uncertainty quantification of laser-ignited turbulent combustion. During his PhD at the University of Cambridge, Murray studied sharp interface methods for multi-material flow, and subsequently has worked on applications of machine learning in medical image and text analysis in industry.

Rafaela Da Silva Presa

BioRafaela is a master in Bioengineering (Molecular Biotechnology branch) since 2019 by Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto, Portugal (FEUP)/ School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of University of Porto (ICBAS) with her MSc thesis done in the field of biomaterials for bone cancer treatment and regeneration simultaneously.
Rafaela is performing her PhD project in Biofabrication Group in the Institute for Innovation and Research in Health from University of Porto (i3s). The project is focused on the development of mechano-modulatory 3D in vitro model of human skin fibrosis. Currently, Rafaela is doing a period abroad at Chaudhuri Lab, Mechanical Engineering department at Stanford University, to study the impact of viscoelasticity in fibroblast fate and activation.
Moreover, she is enrolled in the International Doctoral Program in Cellular and Molecular Biotechnology Applied to Health Sciences (BiotechHealth) in ICBAS from University of Porto.
Her multidisciplinary background in bioengineering and biomaterials allowed her to develop strong skills in complementary research areas ranging from materials synthesis and biofabrication to cellular biology.
Rafaela has excellent communication skills and experience in presenting scientific data in national and international meetings. -

Research Activities:
Dr. Davidson’s research interests span the fields of gas dynamics and combustion kinetics. During his tenure at Stanford University he investigated the chemical kinetics of combustion using a wide array of optical and laser-based diagnostic methods and advanced the use of these diagnostics in shock tubes. He co-authored over 350 research publications with his students and Professor Ronald Hanson. He continues to advise and mentor the graduate students who use shock tubes in the High Temperature Gasdynamics Laboratories. An overview of the shock tube studies performed at Stanford under Prof. Hanson’s and Dr. Davidson’s supervision can be found in the report entitled “Fundamental Kinetics Database Utilizing Shock Tube Measurements” available at http://purl.stanford.edu/kb621cw6967.
He claims he is now retired, but apparently, he is still working. -

Matthew R. Edwards
Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering
BioMatthew Edwards is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering. His research applies high-power lasers to the development of optical diagnostics for fluids and plasmas, the study of intense light-matter interactions, and the construction of compact light and particle sources, combining adaptive high-repetition-rate experiments and large-scale simulations to explore new regimes in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science, and plasma physics.
Matthew received BSE, MA, and PhD degrees in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University. He was then a Lawrence Fellow in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science Directorate at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. -
Vivian Feig

Lorenza Garau Paganella
Postdoctoral Scholar, Mechanical Engineering
BioLorenza was born in Italy in 1997 and is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University with Prof. Chaudhuri, supported by an SNSF fellowship. Her research focuses on engineering biomaterials to investigate cell–extracellular matrix interactions and mechanotransduction in 2D and 3D cell cultures, aiming to advance biomedical understanding of tissue remodeling and disease.
Lorenza obtained her PhD (2024) in Mechanical and Process Engineering from ETH Zurich, where she developed hydrogel scaffolds and protocols for protein isolation to study cell behavior in engineered microenvironments.
Before her PhD, Lorenza completed her MSc at ETH Zurich and BSc at University of Trieste in Process Engineering, graduating both cum laude. During this time her focus was on biomaterials for drug delivery which she complemented with an internship in Roche. She has worked in interdisciplinary teams combining engineering and biology and is motivated by research that bridges fundamental science with clinical impact. -
J. Christian Gerdes

BioChris Gerdes is a Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. His laboratory studies how cars move, how humans drive cars and how to design future cars that work cooperatively with the driver or drive themselves. Vehicles in the lab include X1, a student-built electric, steer-by-wire test vehicle; Takumi, a modified Toyota Supra capable of autonomous drifting in tandem with another car; and Marty, the electrified, automated, drifting DeLorean. Chris' interests in vehicle safety extend to ethics and government policy, having helped to develop the US Federal Automated Vehicle Policy while serving as the first Chief Innovation Officer of the US Department of Transportation.

BioI am a PhD student in the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering. My research interests lie in Numerical Linear Algebra and Parallel Computing. I'm working with Prof. Eric Darve on developing fast algorithms for general linear systems. I obtained my B.Tech (Honors) in Chemical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsGorle's research focuses on the development of predictive flow simulations to support the design of sustainable buildings and cities. Specific topics of interest are the coupling of large- and small-scale models and experiments to quantify uncertainties related to the variability of boundary conditions, the development of uncertainty quantification methods for low-fidelity models using high-fidelity data, and the use of field measurements to validate and improve computational predictions.

Turgut M Gür

Gür is an Adjunct Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University, where he recently retired after a distinguished career that included technical and management leadership for three major multi-disciplinary team-based research centers on campus focused on advanced materials and energy conversion and storage, namely, the DOE-EFRC Center on Nanostructuring for Efficient Energy Conversion (CNEEC), the NSF-MRSEC Center for Materials Research (CMR), and Geballe Laboratory for Advanced Materials (GLAM).
Currently, he is the President of The Electrochemical Society and chairs its Board of Directors and several other ECS committees. He is also an inducted Fellow of The Electrochemical Society.
In addition, he holds a Visiting Professor appointment from the Chinese University of Mining and Technology-Beijing (CUMTB) in China, and an "international mentor" appointment from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway.
He is an internationally recognized leader in high temperature electrochemical energy conversion and storage technologies, materials and processes with 11 US issued patents, 17 (published) patent applications, and 165 technical publications, largely related to energy conversion processes and materials including fuel cells, electrocatalysis, electrosynthesis, coal and hydrocarbon conversion, hydrogen production, and sensors and membranes. He has made nearly 150 oral presentations in national and international conferences, given 85 invited lectures, talks and colloquia, co-organized 24 international conferences and symposia, and co- edited 18 transaction volumes and proceedings.
In 2020, out of more than 186,000 energy scientists in the world, he is ranked the 702nd most cited energy researcher, and is also rated in the top 1% of most cited among all scientists in the world across all scholarly fields of sciences, engineering and medicine (https://journals.plos.org/plosbiology/article?id=10.1371/journal.pbio.3000918). Recently, he is also ranked in the top 5% of cited researcher in RSC journals by The Royal Society of Chemistry.
As an entrepreneur, he was involved in developing advanced technologies in several start-up companies developing supercapacitors, chemically assisted spontaneous production of hydrogen via steam electrolysis, carbon fuel cells for efficient conversion of coal, biomass and other solid fuels to electricity with total carbon capture, and industrial wastewater treatment based on electrochemical remediation by selective reduction and capacitive deionization.
He has served in top leadership positions on the boards of several professional societies as well as industrial and non-profit organizations. He has been on the Board of Directors of The Electrochemical Society for 6 years and was the Chair of the High Temperature Energy Materials and Processes division of the Society. Previously, he had served 3 terms on the Board of the International Society for Solid State Ionics (ISSI), which is another leading global society for scientists in electrochemical energy conversion and storage. Formerly, he was an Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Ceramic Society (2002-2014), and the editor for Solid State Ionics Letters (1998-2002).
He also volunteers his time as a Board Trustee and the former Vice President of the Turkish Educational Foundation, a charitable non-profit organization in the San Francisco Bay Area in California, USA, that provides financial support, scholarships and educational assistance annually to 2400 needy students in Turkey.
He holds BSc and MSc degrees in Chemical Engineering from the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, and three graduate degrees including a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University. -

Ronald Hanson

Aoife Henry
Postdoctoral Scholar, Mechanical Engineering
BioAoife Henry earned her doctorate in Electrical, Computer & Energy Engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder, funded by and in collaboration with the wind energy control systems team at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). During her doctorate, she applied her joint specializations of machine learning and control systems to implement and validate forecast-enabled wind energy controllers using state-of-the-art time-series forecasting models. She is now working to commercialize and scale this technology under the wing of the Stanford Sustainability Accelerator Fellowship at the Doerr School of Sustainability.
