Grant Barber
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Gastroenterology & Hepatology
BioDr. Grant Barber is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford University. His clinical passion is in the care of patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. After completing his medical training at Harvard Medical School, he completed his training in gastroenterology as well as a Master's degree in clinical research at Stanford. He completed additional training in advanced IBD management at Stanford before joining faculty. His research is focused on male reproductive health in IBD, quality improvement in the provision of IBD care, and economic studies to identify strategies that provide excellent outcomes while being sustainable within the healthcare system. He is an expert in tailoring evidence-based therapies to need of individual people with IBD.

Donald Barr
Professor (Teaching) of Pediatrics (General Pediatrics), Emeritus
BioDonald Barr is a Professor of Pediatrics in the Stanford School of Medicine, and Professor by Courtesy in the Graduate School of Education. He teaches in the Undergraduate Program in Human Biology, where he helped to found Human Biology's curriculum in health policy. His research has studied the effect of the organizational structure of the U.S. medical care delivery system on the quality of primary care. He has also studied cultural and linguistic barriers to health care access for low-income patients, and factors associated with higher rates of attrition from pre-medical studies among minority students at Stanford and other universities. The fourth edition of his book, Introduction to U.S. Health Policy: The Organization, Financing, and Delivery of Health Care in America, was published in 2016. The third edition of his book, Health Disparities in the United States: Social Class, Race, Ethnicity and the Social Determinants of Health, was published in 2019. In June 2003 Dr. Barr was awarded the Lloyd W. Dinkelspiel Award for Distinctive Contribution to Undergraduate Education at Stanford University. In 2006 he received the Miriam Aaron Roland Prize, which recognizes Stanford faculty who engage and involve students in integrating academic scholarship with significant and meaningful volunteer service to society.

Glaivy Batsuli, MD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsHemophilia is a rare inherited X-linked bleeding disorder characterized by the deficiency of blood clotting proteins factor VIII or factor IX. These individuals are at risk for spontaneous bleeds and trauma or surgery-induced bleeding. There have been remarkable advancements in the management of hemophilia to prevent these bleeding episodes and improve quality of life. However, the presence of neutralizing antibodies, called inhibitors, still dictates access to novel therapies such as factor replacement for bleed management and now FDA-approved gene therapies. The Batsuli Lab is focused on elucidating mechanisms of the immune response to blood coagulation proteins in bleeding disorders in order to develop strategies and therapeutics for inhibitor prevention and tolerance induction.
Dr. Batsuli's clinical research interests also include clinical trial participation for novel therapeutics & interventions in bleeding disorders such as hemophilia and von Willebrand disease in addition to coagulation issues & outcomes in ultra-rare bleeding disorders and sickle cell disease. -

Marc Berg
Clinical Professor, Pediatrics - Critical Care
BioDr. Berg was born and raised in rural Minnesota and has been in academic medicine since 1997. His research interests include CPR performance, pediatric defibrillation science, and education primarily through simulation. He has been a volunteer with the American Heart Association for more than 10 years, leading the Pediatric CPR course (PALS) in 2010. He has served in several administrative positions including Division Chief of Pediatric Critical Care at the University of Arizona, Board Director of the University of Arizona Health Network and Governor-appointed member of the Arizona Medical Board. In his free time he enjoys biking, reading and spending time with his family. He is married with three children and lives in Menlo Park, California.

David Bergman

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research has involved the use of new technologies to create different types of patient-doctor transactions. I am also interested in how these new transactions impact clinical care processes. Current work includes the evaluation of a patient portal for children with cystic fibrosis, the use of telemedicine to bring asthma experts into the schools and the attitudes of teens and parents about the use of a secure patient portal for teens.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research is focused on the diagnosis, discovery and delineation of rare genetic conditions with a focus on neurodevelopmental disorders. This work includes the application of novel computational methods and multi-omics profiling (whole genome sequencing, long-read DNA sequencing, RNA sequencing, methylomics, metabolomics). I additionally participate in an interdisciplinary project to develop induced pluripotent stem cell and assembloid models of genetic neurodevelopmental disorders.

He completed his internal medicine residency at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and is currently in a fellowship program in clinical informatics at Stanford University, expected to graduate in 2026. His work has been covered by Forbes, Anthropic (“The Briefing: Healthcare and Life Sciences” virtual event) and the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI (HAI).
Research interests: implementation of agentic AI in healthcare workflows (NEJM AI, DOI: 10.1056/AIdbp2500144 & JMIR AI, DOI: 10.2196/66741), virtual care model innovation, mitigation of bias in CDS tools, and data-driven quality improvement. Karoline Marie Bornemann
Postdoctoral Scholar, Cardiology
BioKaroline-Marie Bornemann, PhD, is a biomedical engineer interested in cardiovascular flows, specifically the computational modeling of heart valves using fluid-structure interaction simulations. Her current postdoctoral research in the Marsden lab at Stanford University focuses on the simulation of congenital valve pathologies and valve repair in pediatrics working with Alexander D. Kaiser, Alison Marsden and Michael Ma. She obtained her PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Bern where she investigated instability mechanisms leading to laminar-turbulent transition past bioprosthetic aortic valves with Dominik Obrist and Peter Schmid. During her PhD, she performed a secondment at KTH Royal Institute of Technology collaborating with Ardeshir Hanifi and Dan Henningson assessing the stability of flow fields past valve prostheses. Visualizations of her PhD research were showcased in a winning entry of the Gallery of Fluid Motion 2024 and her PhD thesis won the GCB Best PhD Thesis 2024 Award.

Fellow in Pediatrics - NeonatologyBioRyan Brewster is a Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellow at the Stanford University School of Medicine. His scholarship focuses on building, scaling, and evaluating technology-enabled models of care delivery, with an emphasis on child health equity. Ongoing initiatives include implementing pediatric home hospital, studying the use of artificial intelligence for medical translation and interpretation, and expanding tele-neonatology services globally. Prior to his clinical fellowship, he was a Harvard HealthTech Fellow and Ariadne Labs Research Fellow. She completed her pediatrics residency and chief residency at the Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, NY and pediatric cardiology fellowship at the Children's Hospital of Michigan. Her advanced fellowship training in pediatric cardiac non-invasive imaging was completed at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital in New York. She earned her Masters degree in Clinical research and statistical analysis at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She worked at Seattle Children's Hospital, University of Washington for almost ten years where she served as the Director of Non-invasive Imaging research and the Co-Director of cardiac MRI program. Her research interests include echocardiography and Cardiac MRI.
