    BioDr. Daphne Oluwaseun Martschenko (she/hers) is an Assistant Professor at the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics and former co-organizer of the Race, Empire, and Education Research Collective. Her scholarship identifies novel ways to examine and enhance the ethical and socially responsible conduct, translation, and interpretation of human genetic research.

    Dr. Martschenko is passionate about fostering public and community engagement with controversial scientific research. She has appeared in the New York Times and on numerous podcasts including Freakonomics Radio. Dr. Martschenko’s work is published in publicly accessible media outlets such as Scientific American and The Conversation. In 2023, she was named one of 10 Scientists to Watch by ScienceNews.

    Currently, Dr. Martschenko is writing a book with her friend and colleague Sam Trejo, a quantitative social scientist interested in how social and biological factors jointly shape human development across the life-course. In it, they unpack various social, ethical, and policy issues related to the DNA revolution.

    BioDr. Massoudi is a board certified urologist specializing in general urology and urologic oncology. He is a clinical assistant professor of urology at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Massoudi has expertise in treating prostate cancer, kidney cancer, kidney stones, and
    enlarged prostate. He also cares for patients with bladder cancer, testicular cancer, urinary retention, and a wide range of other urologic conditions.

    His experience encompasses the complete spectrum of treatment options. This includes advanced, minimally invasive techniques like endoscopy and laparoscopy, as well as robotic surgery, which can enable smaller incisions and potentially shorter recovery times. For cases where a minimally invasive approach isn’t feasible, he performs open surgery.

    Dr. Massoudi partners with each patient and family to customize a treatment plan that fits their needs. He welcomes patients at all stages in their journey—from early to more advanced symptoms—and is dedicated to helping them manage their urologic health long-term. He values the rewards of helping patients through difficult times as they cope with urologic disorders.

    Dr. Massoudi was drawn to urology for its unique combination of medical and surgical care, including the opportunity to use the most innovative techniques and technology. He enjoys establishing a rapport and staying in close communication with referring physicians. To ensure all of his patients receive comprehensive care, he collaborates with Stanford colleagues from endocrinology, nephrology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and other specialties.

    Building on his passion for biological sciences and bioengineering, Dr. Massoudi’s studies have included translational research into the use of proteomics to target proteins on the metabolic pathway of kidney cancer development. In partnership with the Stanford Kidney Cancer Research Program, he has also explored the role of the molecule IQGAP in kidney cancer cell migration, proliferation, differentiation, polarity, and adhesion.

    While working at the Veterans Administration in Palo Alto, Dr. Massoudi collaborated on an investigation into the utility of nuclear imaging methods for identifying and staging bladder cancer. He also collaborated on research that used novel proteomic technology to understand the signaling mechanisms of renal cell carcinoma; he later performed in vitro experiments on novel biomarkers and therapeutic agents for treating it.

    Dr. Massoudi has authored numerous articles on renal disorders, innovative treatment techniques and technologies, and related topics. His work has been featured in Cell, the Journal of Endourology, European Urology Oncology, Canadian Journal of Urology, American Journal of Medical Genetics, and others. He has made presentations at conferences including the American Urological Association, Society of Urology Oncology, and World Congress of Endourology.

    Dr. Massoudi has received multiple honors for teaching, scholarship, and research including a Stanford Urology Teaching Award for Outstanding
    Mentorship of Co-Residents. In addition, he won a Gold Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award from Stanford University School of Medicine.
    At the 43rd Annual Northern California Urological Society Conference, he won top honors for his presentation on IQGAP.

    BioBrittany Matheson, PhD, is a clinical assistant professor and licensed clinical psychologist in the Eating Disorders Clinic. She completed her undergraduate degree at Duke University, doctorate from the Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology at San Diego State University and the University of California, San Diego, and APA clinical internship at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford/Children’s Health Council. Dr. Matheson's research interests include examining the psychosocial, neurocognitive, and familial factors related to disordered eating and excess weight gain in youth. In particular, Dr. Matheson has research and clinical expertise in the interplay among obesity, disordered eating, and autism spectrum disorder. She is interested in the development and implementation of evidence-based treatments for youth with disordered eating as well as better understanding factors that influence pediatric bariatric surgery outcomes. Her research also focuses on the use of technology to enhance treatment and reduce access to care barriers.

    BioRyan Matlow, Ph.D., is a child clinical psychologist who serves as Director of Community Programs for Stanford’s Early Life Stress and Resilience Program, and is a faculty member in Stanford's Human Rights and Trauma Mental Health Program. His clinical and research efforts focus on understanding and addressing the impact of stress, adversity, and trauma in children, families, and communities. In particular, Dr. Matlow seeks to apply current scientific knowledge of the neurobiological and developmental impact of stress, trauma, and adversity in shaping interventions and systems of care. Dr. Matlow is focused on engaging diverse populations and providing evidence-based individual, family, and systems interventions for posttraumatic stress following interpersonal trauma, with an emphasis on efforts in school, community, and integrated care settings. He is engaged in clinical service, program development, and interdisciplinary collaboration efforts that address childhood trauma exposure in communities that have been historically marginalized, under-resourced, and/or experienced human rights violations. He has worked extensively in providing trauma-focused psychological evaluation, treatment, and advocacy services with immigrant youth and families, with a focus on immigrants from Latin American countries. Dr. Matlow is involved in the training and dissemination of Stanford's Cue Centered Therapy (Carrion, 2015), a flexible, manualized intervention addressing childhood experiences of chronic trauma.

    BioDr. McClung is a fellowship trained, board certified Gynecologic Oncologist with the Stanford Medicine Cancer Center and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Stanford Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Gynecologic Oncology.

    She graduated from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City and she completed residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford Medicine. She then pursued sub-specialty Gynecologic Oncology fellowship at Moffitt Cancer Center and the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida.

    Prior to joining Stanford Health Care, Dr. McClung was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Arizona Banner University Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona.

    Dr. McClung actively contributes to gynecologic cancer research. She has studied prevention of surgical site infections, gene expression prediction of lymph node metastasis in endometrial cancer, treatment resistance in ovarian cancer, and additional topics. She co-authored articles on her findings for peer-reviewed publications such as the International Journal of Gynecologic Cancer, International Journal of Women’s Health, and Gynecologic Oncology Reports.

    She authored the chapter on the diagnosis and management of vaginal cancer in the textbook Handbook of Gynecology and has made invited presentations at meetings of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology and other associations. She works to improve patient access to state-of-the-art care as an investigator in cooperative group clinical trials.

    She has won multiple teaching awards for her work with medical students and residents. She is passionate about increasing awareness of gynecologic cancer in medical trainees.

    Dr. McClung provides comprehensive care with a personalized approach for patients with gynecologic cancer and pre-cancer including surgery, chemotherapy, cancer risk reduction, and palliative care. She has a strong clinical interest in patient safety and quality of life both during and after cancer treatment.

    BioDr. McDonald is a fellowship-trained, board-certified neurologist and clinical assistant professor in the Department of Neurology at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    She specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating diseases, including neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody disease (MOGAD). Dr. McDonald also provides comprehensive care to general neurology patients.

    Dr. McDonald completed her internship and adult neurology residency at the University of Utah. She has a long-standing interest in multiple sclerosis care and went on to complete a two-year clinical MS/neuroimmunology fellowship at Stanford Health Care Multiple Sclerosis Center. Dr. McDonald received the National MS Society’s Sylvia Lawry Physician Fellowship, including formalized training in conducting clinical trials. As part of her fellowship, she completed a master’s degree in epidemiology and clinical research.

    BioDr. Mark McGovern is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and, by courtesy, the Department of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Most people who need health care do not receive it. And of those who do, wide variation exists in the quality of the care they receive. Gaps in health care access and quality are worse for certain groups, such as underrepresented minorities and persons living in low-resourced urban and rural areas, and/or in poverty. Enormous disparities exist in health care systems, both private and public. Dr. McGovern is a leader in using rigorous methods of dissemination and implementation (D&I) science to close these gaps in equitable health care delivery.

    His mission is to get the best health care possible to the people who need it the most.

    Dr. McGovern's primary focus is the implementation and sustainment of evidence-based interventions and guideline adherent care in public and private health care systems and organizations. Within the hub of the Center for Dissemination and Implementation (CDI) which he directs, Dr. McGovern is the Principal Investigator (PI) and leads three national dissemination and implementation (D&I) centers: The Center for Dissemination and Implementation At Stanford (C-DIAS); The Research Adoption Support Center (RASC); and, the Mental Health Technology Transfer Center Network Coordinating Center (MHTTC). The 3 centers are federally-funded, respectively by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (P50DA05402), the National Institutes of Health Healing Addiction Long Term (HEAL) initiative (U2CDA057717), and the US Department of Health and Human Services Substance Use and Mental Health Services Administration (H79SM081726). Dr. McGovern is also the PI on a multi-site adaptive implementation trial across a state system of care, which aims to integrate addiction medications for persons with opioid use disorder who are receiving services in specialty or primary care organizations (R01DA052975). In addition, he conducts D&I research and practice projects in federally-qualified health centers (FQHCs) across the State of California, in the Stanford Division of Primary Care and Population Health, and in specialty addiction and mental health treatment organizations nationwide. He leads, facilitates and/or actively engages networks advancing D&I science in health, including the NIDA Clinical Trials Network Translation & Implementation Special Interest Group, the NIDA Clinical Trials Western States Node Translation & Implementation Workgroup, the Stanford University Network for Dissemination & Implementation Research (SUNDIR), the VA Palo Alto HSR&D Center for Innovation to Implementation, and the Stanford Medicine Center for Improvement. He is on the Core Faculty of the National Institute of Mental Health Implementation Research Institute at the Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. McGovern is a collaborator on multiple projects as a co-investigator, consultant, or advisory board member. He is a mentor to numerous individuals across the country and at Stanford, from university undergraduates to mid-career faculty and clinical administrators at academic institutions and health care systems nationwide.

    BioDr. McIntire earned his MD from Harvard Medical School and his PhD in Neuroscience from Harvard University, where he was awarded a Frank Knox Memorial Fellowship and Carl Walter Fellowship. He then completed Neurology residency training at UCSF. He is board certified in Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He has been named a Robert Ebert Clinical Scholar and Culpepper Medical Science Scholar. Dr. McIntire has published extensively in the fields of molecular neurobiology and neurogenetics.

This requires new MRI contrast mechanisms, strategic encoding and reconstruction schemes, physiological monitoring, brain tissue modeling and validation. Applications of these methods include neuronavigation, neurosurgical planning and the development of improved biomarkers for brain development, degeneration, disease and injury.

    BioDr. Meador is a Professor of Neurology and Neurosciences at Stanford University, and Clinical Director, Stanford Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. Dr. Meador graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Applied Biology (with high honor) and received his MD from the Medical College of Georgia. After an internship at the University of Virginia and service as an officer in the Public Health Corps, he completed a residency in Neurology at the Medical College of Georgia and a fellowship in Behavioral Neurology at the University of Florida. Dr. Meador joined the faculty at the Medical College of Georgia (1984-2002) where he became the Charbonnier Professor of Neurology. He was the Chair of Neurology at Georgetown University (2002-2004), the Melvin Greer Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience at the University of Florida (2004-2008) where he served as Director of Epilepsy Program and Director of the Clinical Alzheimer Research Program, and Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics at Emory University (2008-2013) where he served as Director of Epilepsy and of Clinical Neurocience Research. He joined the faculty of Stanford University in 2013. Dr. Meador has authored over 400 peer-reviewed publications. His research interests include: cognitive mechanisms (e.g., memory and attention); cerebral lateralization; pharmacology and physiology of cognition; mechanisms of perception, consciousness and memory; EEG; epilepsy; epilepsy and pregnancy; preoperative evaluation for epilepsy surgery; intracarotid amobarbital procedure (i.e., Wada test); functional imaging; therapeutic drug trials; neurodevelopmental effects of antiepileptic drugs; psychoimmunology; behavioral disorders (e.g., aphasia, neglect, dementia); and neuropsychiatric disorders. Dr. Meador has served as the PI for a long running NIH multicenter study of pregnancy outcomes in women with epilepsy and their children. Dr. Meador has served on the editorial boards for Clinical Neurophysiology, Epilepsy and Behavior, Epilepsy Currents, Journal of Clinical Neurophysiology, Neurology, Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology, and Epilepsy.com. I am recruiting scholars who are interested in conducting clinical and epidemiological research to validate, refine, and implement the mortality score to reduce neonatal mortality in Ethiopia.

    BioKara D. Meister, MD, FAAP, FACS is a pediatric otolaryngologist and head & neck surgeon. She received her medical degree from Medical University of South Carolina and completed her otolaryngology residency at University of Pittsburgh. She completed a NIH-funded fellowship in head and neck research at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Meister then went on to complete a pediatric otolaryngology fellowship at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford.

    She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department Otolaryngology, Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology, at Stanford University. Dr. Meister’s research interests include thyroid cancer, head & neck masses, Graves' disease. She has a special interest in the influence of the environment and pollutants (such as microplastics) on health. She currently serves as the Associate Clinical Chief of Pediatric Otolaryngology. Dr. Meister completed additional training in innovation through the Stanford Biodesign Faculty Fellowship.

    Her clinical interests include the treatment of patients with head and neck masses including thyroid nodules and cancer. She is Co-Director, Surgical, of the Children's Thyroid Center at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford and is a participating surgeon in the Aerodigestive and Airway Reconstruction Center at Stanford Children’s Health. She is co-editor of the textbook "Pediatric Bronchoscopy for Clinicians" and enjoys advocacy work with the American Academy of Pediatrics Button Battery Taskforce.

    Dr. Meister is a member of the American Thyroid Association (ATA) where she serves on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee and is a member of the ATA Guidelines Writing Group for Thyroid Disease & Pregnancy. She is a member of the pediatric committee of the American Head and Neck Society. She is an author and speaker on masses and tumors of the head and neck, thyroid disease, and thyroid cancer in children and adolescents. In collaboration with SHC, she offers novel treatment for thyroid problems in children and adolescents including radiofrequency ablation of thyroid nodules.

    BioDr. Mekonnen is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist with the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor of medicine in the Department of Ophthalmology.

    Dr. Mekonnen diagnoses and treats a wide range of eye conditions, including cataracts, corneal and external eye diseases. She creates an individual, comprehensive care plan for each of her patients.

    Dr. Mekonnen’s clinical research interests include exploring the most effective medical and surgical therapies for patients with corneal and external eye diseases. She has researched and published on outcomes of macular edema, described a novel surgical technique for severe ocular surface disease and described a possible new ophthalmic manifestation of a rare congenital disorder called Cobb syndrome.

    Dr. Mekonnen has published work in the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Cornea: The Journal of Cornea and External Disease, and the Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection. She has presented to her peers at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Women in Ophthalmology (WIO) Summer Symposium, and the Annual GlaxoSmithKline Women in Science Conference.

He is also Director of the Danish Cancer Institute (DCI), Research Director at the Danish Cancer Society in Denmark, and Professor in Medical Epidemiology at Copenhagen University in Denmark. From 2016-2020 he was President and CEO at Statens Serum Institut, Copenhagen, Denmark. Previous positions at e.g. the National Cancer Institute, NIH, USA, before he became State Epidemiologist in Denmark, and later Head of Department of Epidemiology Research, and Division Director of Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance, Statens Serum Institut. Previous academic positions as Danish Research Council Professor, NORFA professor, and Foreign Adjunct Professor at Karolinska Institute in Sweden. He has written more than 700 publications (H-index: 108/132 (Web of Science/Google scholar) and is the Dane with most papers in high impact journals in general medicine (NEJM, Lancet, JAMA). He is among the worlds top 2% of scientists as listed in the AD Scientific Index 2023. He is knighted by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and has recieved e.g. the Novo Nordisk Prize, the large Erhoff Prize, and the Anders Jahre Prize (young researchers), Oslos, Norway. He is e.g. chairman of the scientific committee at the Danish Health Insurance Fund, member of the scientific advisory board for Oslo University Hospital, member of the A.P.     BioMichelle Mello is Professor of Law at Stanford Law School and Professor of Health Policy in the Department of Health Policy at Stanford University School of Medicine. She conducts empirical research into issues at the intersection of law, ethics, and health policy. She is the author of more than 250 articles on medical liability, public health law, the public health response to COVID-19, pharmaceuticals and vaccines, biomedical research ethics and governance, artificial intelligence, health information privacy, and other topics.

    The recipient of a number of awards for her research, Dr. Mello was elected to the National Academy of Medicine at the age of 40. From 2000 to 2014, she was a professor at the Harvard School of Public Health, where she directed the School’s Program in Law and Public Health.

    Dr. Mello teaches courses in torts and public health law. She holds a J.D. from the Yale Law School, a Ph.D. in Health Policy and Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.Phil. from Oxford University, where she was a Marshall Scholar, and a B.A. from Stanford University.

    BioThe Melosh group explores how to apply new methods from the semiconductor and self-assembly fields to important problems in biology, materials, and energy. We think about how to rationally design engineered interfaces to enhance communication with biological cells and tissues, or to improve energy conversion and materials synthesis. In particular, we are interested in seamlessly integrating inorganic structures together with biology for improved cell transfection and therapies, and designing new materials, often using diamondoid molecules as building blocks.
    My group is very interested in how to design new inorganic structures that will seamless integrate with biological systems to address problems that are not feasible by other means. This involves both fundamental work such as to deeply understand how lipid membranes interact with inorganic surfaces, electrokinetic phenomena in biologically relevant solutions, and applying this knowledge into new device designs. Examples of this include “nanostraw” drug delivery platforms for direct delivery or extraction of material through the cell wall using a biomimetic gap-junction made using nanoscale semiconductor processing techniques. We also engineer materials and structures for neural interfaces and electronics pertinent to highly parallel data acquisition and recording. For instance, we have created inorganic electrodes that mimic the hydrophobic banding of natural transmembrane proteins, allowing them to ‘fuse’ into the cell wall, providing a tight electrical junction for solid-state patch clamping. In addition to significant efforts at engineering surfaces at the molecular level, we also work on ‘bridge’ projects that span between engineering and biological/clinical needs. My long history with nano- and microfabrication techniques and their interactions with biological constructs provide the skills necessary to fabricate and analyze new bio-electronic systems.

My research on childhood health disparities centers on Latino and immigrant children with a focus on early childhood health and development.     BioDr. Joshua Menke completed his hematopathology fellowship at Stanford and cytopathology fellowship at University of California San Francisco (UCSF). His clinical and research interests lie at the intersection of hematopathology, cytopathology and advanced single cell and cell free diagnostic techniques. As Associate Section Director of Clinical Flow Cytometry at Stanford, Dr. Menke is developing and validating new minimal residual disease assays for detecting low levels of myeloid and lymphoid neoplasms in the post-treatment setting as well as multiple other 12 color flow assays with the latest markers for routine phenotyping. Dr. Menke is the receipient of the Paul E. Standjord Young Investigator Award from the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Scientists and Laurance J. Marton Award for Excellence in Research from UCSF for his translational work on CALR mutations at the UCSF Molecular Diagnostics Laboroatory. Currently, he is spearheading novel genomic and proteomic analytic techniques to study cytology samples obtained for lymphoma diagnostics, including sequencing cell-free tumor DNA from supernatant samples. Dr. Menke is a founding member of the Cytology-Hematopathology Interinstitution Collaboration (CHIC) that aims to study the performance of cytology samples in diagnosing lymphoma across large datasets from five academic institutions and currently chairs that group spearheading large clinical research studies.

    BioAntonio Meola M.D. Ph.D graduated Summa cum Laude and Research Honors at the University of Pisa, Italy, in 2008, and completed his residency training in Neurosurgery at the same Institution in July 2015. Dr Meola attended a Ph.D. program at the University of Florence, Italy, where he discussed a doctoral thesis entitled "A New Head-Mounted Display-based Augmented Reality System in Neurosurgical Oncology: a study on phantom".
    Since 2/2014 to 1/2015 Dr Meola completed a Research Fellowship in Neurosurgical anatomy at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), under the Direction of Dr. Juan C. Fernandez-Miranda. The main focus of his research was the surgical neuroanatomy of the white matter tracts of the human brain.
    Since 7/2015 to 6/2016 Dr Meola served as Clinical Fellow in Image-Guided Neurosurgery at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, in Boston, MA (Director: Dr. Alexandra J. Golby M.D.). During the fellowship, he focused on the clinical application and integration of advanced imaging techniques, including intraoperative-MRI, intraoperative US, functional MRI, tractography.
    Since 7/2016 to 6/2017 Dr Meola completed a Neurosurgical Oncology Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH, devoting his efforts to minimally-invasive neurosurgical techniques, such as Laser interstitial Thermal Therapy (LITT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (Gamma Knife), as well as to awake neurosurgery.
    Starting 7/2017, Dr Meola joined the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford. Dr. Meola mainly focuses on conventional and innovative treatments for brain and skull base tumors, including both surgery and stereotactic radiosurgery (CyberKnife).

    BioDr. Mercola is Professor of Medicine and Professor in the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. He completed postdoctoral training at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, was on the faculty in the Department of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School for 12 years, and later at the Sanford-Burnham-Prebys Institute and Department of Bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego before relocating to Stanford in 2015.

    Prof. Mercola is known for identifying many of the factors that are responsible for inducing and forming the heart, including the discovery that Wnt inhibition is a critical step in cardiogenesis that provided the conceptual basis and reagents for the large-scale production of cardiovascular tissues from pluripotent stem cells. He has collaborated with medicinal chemists, optical engineers and software developers to pioneer the use of patient iPSC-cardiomyocytes for disease modeling, safety pharmacology and drug development. His academic research is focused on developing and using quantitative high throughput assays of patient-specific cardiomyocyte function to discover druggable targets for preserving contractile function in heart failure and promoting regeneration following ischemic injury. He co-established drug screening and assay development at the Conrad Prebys Drug Discovery Center (San Diego), which operated as one of 4 large screening centers of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) Molecular Libraries screening initiative and continues as one of the largest academic drug screening centers.

    Prof. Mercola received an NIH MERIT award for his work on heart formation. He holds numerous patents, including describing the invention of the first engineered dominant negative protein and small molecules for stem cell and cancer applications. He serves on multiple editorial and advisory boards, including Vala Sciences, Regencor, The Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research and the Human Biomolecular Research Institute. His laboratory is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Phospholamban Foundation and Fondation Leducq.
