Yohannes Woubishet Woldeamanuel
Basic Life Res Scientist, Neurology
BioDr. Yohannes W. Woldeamanuel M.D. is a translational physician scientist, currently Instructor at Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences and Senior Fellow at the Center for Innovation in Global Health, Stanford University School of Medicine. He obtained his M.D. from Addis Abeba University Medical Faculty in 2007. Following graduation, Dr. Woldeamanuel was Head of Department of Anatomy, Histology, Embryology at Jimma University School of Medicine where he successfully instructed medical students and other health profession disciplines for a year and a half. Afterwards, he did Clinical Neurology residency training at Addis Abeba University Medical Faculty combined with Basic Science and Clinical Research Fellowships concentrating in the areas of Neuroinfectious Diseases, Neuropathic Pain, Epilepsy, and Neuroepidemiology at Karolinska Institutet - Sweden, Albert Einstein College of Medicine - USA, University of Heidelberg - Germany, and Imperial College London - UK. He completed his PostDoctoral Fellowship in Headache Medicine at the Stanford Headache Program. He is Awardee of several prestigious Fellowships, namely, the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) John G. Nicholls 2012, International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) Scan|Design Foundation 2010, European Neurological Society (ENS) 2011, and International Headache Society (IHS) 2014. He also has vested interest and expertise in Digital Health as shown by his recent developments of clinically-validated self-management apps for neuropathy (CHANT) and migraine. He has strong track record of publishing many peer-reviewed first-authored articles in several high impact medical journals including The Lancet Oncology, Neurology, Pain, Journal of Neurology, Cephalalgia, and Journal of Neurological Sciences. He has been awarded the 2016 Emerging Leader in Global Health Innovation Award, Consortium of Universities for Global Health from Drs. Anvar and Pari Velji Family Foundation based on his leading role in the development, validation, and field-testing of a clinical instrument for the diagnosis of sensory neuropathy and neuropathic pain (Clinical HIV-Associated Neuropathy Tool or CHANT (Woldeamanuel et al., 2016)). He currently serves as the academic editor for Frontiers in Neurology, BMC Neurology, and BioMed Research International and regularly peer reviews for journals such as Neurology, JNNP, Cephalalgia, Headache. He is an invited editorial board member for the highest impact factor headache journal - The Journal of Headache & Pain. He has received the Publons Peer Review Award for 2017-18 as the Top 1% Reviewer on Publons Global Reviewers Database. He is ranked 3rd among headache and migraine experts from Stanford (see Expertscape rankings at https://expertscape.com/ex/migraine+headache/i/stanford_university). He is the first to receive NINDS/NIH award (K01) for headache research at Stanford. He is a certified Quantitative Sensory Testing investigator in accordance with the world-renowned German Research Network on Neuropathic Pain. He is an elected Member of the Juniors Special Interest Group at the International Headache Society since 2015. Dr. Woldeamanuel consults for his clinic in Addis Abeba, Advanced Clinical & Research Center, where he provides his expertise to neurological and general medical patients.

Temesgen 'Tem' Woldeyesus
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Primary Care and Population Health
BioDr. Tem (Temesgen) is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Primary Care and Population Health. He obtained his medical degree at UCSF and continued his residency training at UCSF in Family and Community Medicine. He was selected as Chief Resident, where he further developed as a clinical educator and administrator, prior to joining the faculty group at Stanford. His academic interests include alternative models of care, clinical informatics, and digital health equity.
Dr. Tem Woldeyesus practices full-spectrum family medicine, which includes care for the entire age spectrum. He is driven to provide evidence-based, high quality, culturally competent care.
He is a native of the Bay Area. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his fiancée, playing (and watching) basketball, and exploring national parks. -
Albert J. Wong, M.D.
Professor of Neurosurgery
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur goal is to define targets for cancer therapeutics by identifying alterations in signal transduction proteins. We first identified a naturally occurring mutant EGF receptor (EGFRvIII) and then delineated its unique signal transduction pathway. This work led to the identification of Gab1 followed by the discovery that JNK is constitutively active in tumors. We intiated using altered proteins as the target for vaccination, where an EGFRvIII based vaccine appears to be highly effective.

BioDr. Becky Wong is an adult and pediatric anesthesiologist at Stanford University Hospitals and Clinics and The Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital in Stanford, California. She received her medical school degree at The University of California at San Diego and her anesthesia residency and pediatric anesthesia fellowship training at Stanford. She provides anesthesia care for a wide range of ages with a focus on neuroanesthesia. She co-chairs the Neuroanesthesia Special Interest Group in the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia. As an Associate Director for Quality Improvement in the Stanford Anesthesia Department, she has a deep interest in improving patient care.

Joseph Woo, MD, FACS, FACC, FAHA

BioDr. Woo is a nationally recognized surgeon, innovator, researcher, and educator in cardiothoracic surgery.
He chairs the Stanford Health Cardiothoracic Surgery Department. He is the Norman E. Shumway Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery and holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Bioengineering.
Dr. Woo is a board-certified, fellowship-trained heart surgeon with an active clinical practice of more than 300 pump cases per year. He focuses on complex mitral and aortic valve repair, thoracic aortic surgery, cardiopulmonary transplantation, and minimally invasive surgery.
He has advanced these fields by developing innovative surgical procedures. He serves as principal investigator on two studies funded by National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants. One explores stem cells, angiogenesis, tissue engineering, and valvular biomechanics. Dr. Woo has received NIH funding for this study continuously since 2004.
He has served as primary investigator for clinical device trials. He also has been the primary investigator for translational scientific clinical trials entailing administration of stem cells during coronary artery bypass grafting and left ventricular arterial device (LVAD) implantation.
Dr. Woo has co-authored more than 400 articles in peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Woo serves on the board of directors of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS). He is the president of the AATS Cardiac Surgery Biology Club. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, American College of Cardiology, and American Heart Association. He serves on the leadership committee of the American Heart Association’s Council on Cardiovascular Surgery and Anesthesia.
He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery, International Society for Heart & Lung Transplantation, International Society for Heart Research, and other professional societies. -

My Stanford Projects:
- Stanford Cancer Center Research Database (SCIRDB)
Developed a web-based platform to integrate data from the Stanford Cancer Institute (EPIC/Clarity), Stanford Tumor Registry, STRIDE (Tissue Bank & Pre-EPIC Data), and several other systems into a "one-stop shop" for data analysis and annotation by cancer researchers. This cohort-driven system allows users to focus on their patients of interest and provides free-text search of all their notes, reports and narratives as well as a timeline-based view of all events for a patient. Easy exports allow for data analysis in biostatistical tools and the system can perform complex analysis using the open-source R statistical software as a service.
- Lymphoma Program Project (LPP)
Rearchitected an existing legacy database system that tracks Stanford's Non-Hodgkins and Hodgkins Lymphoma cases back to the late 1960's. Enables clinicians to track diagnosis, courses of treatment, long-term follow-up, and clinical responses to the diseases.
- Bone Marrow Transplant Program
Developed replacement web-enabled database based on legacy system in place since 1980s that enhanced data capture abilities by leveraging data feeds from BMT Clinic and Stanford Hospital. Also enabled electronic form submission to national transplant databank via XML-based web-services.
- Transplant Arteriosclerosis, Viral and Host Mechanisms
Developed web-based application and reporting systems Gathered requirements, translated requirements into technical specifications, built reporting tools, designed table schemas, migrated database tables from Access to Oracle, normalizing and validating data in the process. Wrote all SQL scripts for automating data migration.
- Stanford Asian Pacific Program in Hypertension and Insulin Resistance (SAPPHIRe)
Provided on-going maintenance for the project by uploading data, generating reports for statistical analysis and modifying table schema to incorporate new measurements such as creatinine.
- GenePad Project
Developed a web-based tool for quality assurance of scanned form data that allows users to view scanned input and validate it before storing it into final database tables. The tool dynamically configures itself by examining the structure of the database. -
Emily Woods
Postdoctoral Scholar, Pathology
BioI am a physician scientist, currently training as a postdoctoral researcher in the Bogyo lab. Broadly, my research interest is focused on the urgent problem of antimicrobial resistance. Diagnostics are an important tool for addressing antimicrobial resistance, because rapid identification of the causative pathogen can help decrease the use of overly broad-spectrum antibiotics. My current work is on the development of in vivo imaging techniques for diagnosis of bacterial infections. My prior work (completed during my PhD in the McBride lab at Emory University) focused on genetic mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobial peptides in Clostridioides difficile. I also received my MD from Emory University and completed residency in internal medicine at Stanford. My clinical interests include hospital medicine, social determinants of health, and health advocacy.

Britt Wray
Instructor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioDr. Wray is the Lead of the Chair’s Special Initiative on Climate and Mental Health in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences of Stanford University School of Medicine. Before this she was a Human and Planetary Health Postdoctoral Fellow at the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health, Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Her research focuses on the mental health impacts of climate change on young people ('emerging adults') and frontline community members, psychosocial resilience building, community-minded healing interventions, and public engagement for improved mental wellbeing and planetary health. Dr. Wray has a PhD in Science Communication from the University of Copenhagen and is a journalist, speaker, and author of two books: Generation Dread: Finding Purpose in the Climate Crisis (Knopf 2022, and a finalist for the Governor General's Award), and Rise of the Necrofauna: The Science, Ethics and Risks of De-Extinction (Greystone Books 2017). She has hosted and produced several science radio programs, podcasts and television programs for international broadcasters including the BBC and CBC, and is a TED speaker. Dr Wray is an advisor to the Climate Mental Health Network (addressing the mental health consequences of climate change through community engagement and by harnessing the power of media and technology), Climate Cares (a mental health research collaboration between the Institute of Global Health Innovation and the Grantham Institute at Imperial College London), and the Good Energy Project (a nonprofit unlocking the power of TV and film to inspire courage in the face of climate change). Dr Wray is a Chicago Council on Global Affairs Next Generation Climate Changemaker. She is also the Creator of Gen Dread (gendread.substack.com), a newsletter about building courage and taking meaningful action on the far side of climate grief.

John Fraser Wright

BioJ Fraser Wright, PhD
Dr. Wright received his PhD in 1989 from the University of Toronto (Biochemistry) for studies
characterizing the interaction of complement with IgM, and completed post-doctoral studies at INSERM
/ CENG Grenoble, France in molecular immunology focused on antigen processing and presentation. He
was awarded a CRCS/ MRC Scholarship, gaining faculty appointment at the University of Toronto. In
1996 he joined industry as a Scientist at Pasteur Sanofi, contributing there to the development of
vaccines and cancer immunotherapies, and subsequently as Director of Development and Clinical
Manufacturing at Avigen, a gene therapy company that pioneered AAV-based investigational gene
therapies for hemophilia and Parkinson’s disease. In 2004 he returned to academia, establishing and
directing the Clinical Vector Facility at the Center for Cellular and Molecular Therapeutics at Children’s
Hospital of Philadelphia, and gaining faculty appointment at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman
School of Medicine as professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Dr. Wright has contributed to
several clinical development programs in gene therapy, including for Luxturna and Kymriah, the first
gene therapies for a genetic (RPE65 deficiency) and non-genetic (CAR-T immunotherapy) disease,
respectively, approved in the United States, and for the first gene therapy clinical trial that delivered an
AAV-vectorized monoclonal antibody to human subjects for HIV passive immunity. He is a Co-founder of
Spark Therapeutics, serving there and subsequently at Axovant as Chief Technology Officer. In 2019 Dr.
Wright joined Stanford University as Professor of Pediatrics at The Center for Definitive and Curative
Medicine (CDCM). His research program aims to address key immunological barriers to gene therapy
through innovative approaches to viral vector design and generation, and to develop vectorized
antibodies for serious human diseases. -
Albert Y. Wu, MD, PhD, FACS

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy translational research focuses on using autologous stem cells to recreate a patient’s ocular tissues for potential transplantation. We are generating tissue from induced pluripotent stem cells to treat limbal stem cell deficiency in patients who are bilaterally blind. By applying my background in molecular and cellular biology, stem cell biology, oculoplastic surgery, I hope to make regenerative medicine a reality for those suffering from orbital and ocular disease.

Bryan Wu, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Cardiovascular Medicine
BioDr. Wu is a fellowship-trained cardiologist at Stanford Health Care. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine.
His areas of clinical focus include general and preventive cardiology with a particular interest in cardiac imaging. Dr. Wu uses a range of tools, including advanced echocardiography, cardiac CT, and stress testing to diagnose conditions such as hypertension, valvular disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmia, and hyperlipidemia. He offers medical therapy for general heart conditions and primary prevention for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Wu strives to deliver excellent patient care, pursue new scholarly endeavors, and serve as a dedicated mentor for medical trainees. Additionally, Dr. Wu speaks fluent Chinese and Spanish and embraces racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity in his clinical care.
Dr. Wu is passionate about clinical research. He has pursued scholarly work on the utilization of therapeutic drug monitoring for antihypertensive therapy and statins to help patients from low socioeconomic backgrounds improve their medication adherence. He is also involved in research on advanced imaging and has actively investigated the applications of cardiac CT in electrophysiology interventions.
Dr. Wu’s research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the International Journal of Cardiology and Journal of Vascular Surgery. He has presented his work at regional and national meetings, including the American Heart Association’s annual Scientific Sessions.
