Tyler Johnson
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Oncology
BioDr. Tyler Johnson--a clinical associate professor of medicine and oncology at Stanford University Medical School--is a physician, author, educator, and humanitarian. A medical oncologist, Dr. Johnson sees patients with all types of gastrointestinal malignancies and particularly focuses on patients with neuroendocrine tumors, colon cancer, and pancreas cancer.
Dr. Johnson served for many years as a leader of the Stanford Hospital in-patient oncology services and helped launch the hospital's first direct care inpatient service, med 12. He is also responsible for helping respond to the surge of patients that came with the pandemic and its aftermath.
Dr. Johnson views the practice of medicine largely as an educational endeavor. He directs the Stanford University Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program and spends significant time teaching trainees at levels. To that end, for many years he has taught medical students, residents, and fellows—including hosting them as temporary and longer-term apprentices in his oncology clinic and working with them on the inpatient housestaff oncology service. He emphasizes diversity and inclusion in his mentoring efforts and has worked to promote the professional development of medical trainees across the training spectrum--from undergraduates to oncology fellows.
The winner of multiple Stanford Medicine teaching awards, Dr. Johnson has established himself as a regional and increasingly as a national leader and innovator in the education of oncology fellows, including by developing novel teaching methods that have been presented across the country, including at national meetings. He also works as one of the principal faculty members of the Stanford Educators-4-CARE program.
Dr. Johnson and his co-host, Henry Bair, became concerned about the loss of a shared sense of meaning in the medical profession and, together, have taught multiple classes in the Medical School and, in the spring of 2022, founded The Doctor's Art podcast. Since then, the podcast has become one of the most listened to medical podcasts in the world and has won multiple national awards, making it one of the most lauded and most popular medical podcasts.
Finally, Dr. Johnson is an author with a growing reputation for insightful analysis of the intersection of medicine, ethics, and spirituality. His writings has been featured by Religion News Service, the Salt Lake Tribune, BYU Studies, Dialogue, and The San Jose Mercury News, where he is a regular contributor. He serves on the editorial boards of both BYU Studies and Wayfare and has written extensively on modernity loss of faith and meaning and the role of spirituality in constructing a purposeful and fulfilling life. -

BioJamie Johnston is the Research and Evaluation Director for the Stanford Center for Health Education. Her work focuses on the use of technology to improve educational access and health education in under-resourced areas. Jamie completed a PhD in Economics of Education at the Stanford Graduate School of Education in 2017, where she was an Institute of Education Sciences (IES) doctoral fellow. She also completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Stanford School of Medicine. Additionally, Jamie holds a BS in Social Policy from Northwestern University, an MPP from the University of Chicago, and an MA in Economics from Stanford University.

Nidhi Johri MD

BioDr. Nidhi Johri spent her childhood experiencing various cultures, languages, foods and living styles because of her father's job postings in different parts of India. After passing her medical exam in India, she gained admission into the prestigious Lady Hardinge Medical College (in New Delhi), which was one of the top ranked medical colleges in India.
In medical school and clinical rotations, Dr. Johri liked helping patients cope with chronic diseases and provided comprehensive adult care, while forming long-term relationships with patients. She participated in various volunteer experiences that enhanced her knowledge of public health issues. In addition, she was responsible for the health and social welfare of a family living in a slum settlement. She took care of health issues such as anemia and dealt with other social problems facing the family. Moreover, she learned about community health issues by working in local epidemics.
After getting married, she moved to the U.S. and pursued residency in University of Southern California in the field of Internal Medicine. She also worked as a researcher in the Stanford-Veteran Affairs Gastroenterology department.
Before joining Bay Valley Medical group, Dr. Johri worked in Kaiser Permanente (Petaluma) as a primary care physician. Over the period of five years at Kaiser, she had build strong relationship with her patients while providing excellent care to her patients. She was greatly admired and appreciated by her patients. Due to her husband's job in South Bay (Area), she decided to leave Kaiser Petaluma and join the esteem group of doctors at Bay Valley Medical Group. In addition, Dr Johri has a special interest in obesity medicine and helps her patients with weight management. For her patients, she believes in being not only their doctor but also a friend.
On the personal side, Dr Johri enjoys playing with her three year old son. She also writes fiction and hopes to get it published someday. Moreover, she enjoys cooking, traveling and watching Bollywood movies. -

BioDr. Andrea Jonas is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine at Stanford University. She received her MD from Johns Hopkins University, where she stayed on to complete residency training in internal medicine on the Osler Medical Service. BioCarly completed her BASc in Engineering Physics (UBC) in 2017. She began the MASc program in Biomedical Engineering at UBC in 2017 and transferred into the PhD program in the spring of 2019. Carly successfully defended her PhD thesis in July of 2024 and began a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Stanford University in September of 2024 in the Radiology Department. Carly received the Young Investigator Award from the International Society of Osteoarthritis Imaging in 2019 for her work on cartilage health in hips with bone marrow lesions. She is also a passionate educator and received a Killam Graduate TA Award in 2021 for her TA work in the Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Departments at UBC.

Chaitanya K. Joshi
Postdoctoral Scholar, Biochemistry
BioI'm a Stanford Data Science Fellow and Postdoc at the Department of Biochemistry, working with Prof. Rhiju Das. I'm building lab-in-the-loop AI for RNA biology, bridging deep learning and high-throughput wet lab experiments at scale.
Previously, I completed my PhD in Computer Science at the University of Cambridge with Prof. Pietro Liò. My doctoral work focused on Geometric Deep Learning for molecular modelling and design. As a highlight, I developed gRNAde, an inverse design framework that we used to design and experimentally validate new functional RNA enzymes in collaboration with Dr. Phil Holliger's group at MRC LMB. My research has been recognized by the Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship and the A*STAR National Science Scholarship. I've also been a research scientist intern at Prescient Design (Genentech) and FAIR Chemistry (Meta AI) during my PhD. -
Neha Shirish Joshi, MD MS

BioNeha S Joshi, MD MS is an Instructor in the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine at Stanford University. Her clinical responsibilities include caring for hospitalized children at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford as a board certified Pediatric Hospitalist, and neonatal resuscitation and the care of level I/II late preterm and term newborns as a Neonatal Hospitalist. Dr. Joshi completed her MD with Distinction at the University of California San Francisco, followed by both residency in Pediatrics and fellowship in Pediatric Hospital Medicine at Stanford University. Dr. Joshi additionally completed a Masters in Clinical Research and Epidemiology at Stanford University. Her research program seeks to identify and implement high value care practices for late preterm and term infants during the birth hospitalization. Dr. Joshi's prior work has included the development of a clinical examination-based approach to identifying late preterm and term infants at risk for early onset sepsis; this work won the Jennifer Daru Memorial Award for manuscript with most potential to impact clinical care. Her current focus is the development of clinical benchmarks and quality markers for the care of late preterm infants during the birth hospitalization. Dr Joshi is presently supported by a NIH K23 Career Development Award, the Stanford Maternal and Child Health Research Institute, and the Society for Pediatric Research.

Siddhartha Joshi, PhD
Senior Research Scientist, Neurosurgery
BioI am a neuroscientist with over 20 years of experience in empirical, hypothesis-driven research. My knowledge and expertise cover a wide range of topics and methods within systems neuroscience including sensory perception, neurophysiology and neuroanatomy, eye-movements and pupillometry. My research is focused on how the brain represents and uses sensory information to drive goal-directed behaviors and in exploring how intrinsic neuromodulatory systems influence the neural circuits that drive such behaviors. At Stanford, I am looking to channel my experience towards studying human neural signals that underlie computations governing pain and attention.
My work thus far [1-4] supports the idea that there is a need for simultaneous measurements of behavior, brain state and large-scale cortical activity to understand how the brain’s circuits: (i) are modulated by ascending sympathetic activation and (ii) provide top-down control of descending sympathetic control. These are technically challenging experiments [3,4] that have thus far largely been explored in animal models. My current goal is to leverage opportunities to directly measure human brain activity via electrodes implanted for monitoring epilepsy. Towards this end, I will use state-of-the-art neurophysiological, behavioral, pupillometric techniques combined with quantitative analyses.

Anjali Jotwani, MD, MS

BioDr. Anjali Jotwani is an obstetrician and gynecologist at Stanford Health Care and a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Division of Gynecology & Gynecologic Specialties at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Jotwani offers comprehensive obstetric and gynecologic care for patients at every stage of life, from adolescence to menopause. She specializes in obstetric care, preventive care, the perimenopause transition and menopause, and sexual health. Dr. Jotwani’s approach is rooted in trauma‑informed care and reproductive justice. She is committed to prioritizing patient perspectives, safety, and equity.
Dr. Jotwani’s research spans many areas, from the use of genetic testing during pregnancy, to factors that contribute to gynecologic cancers. Her research interests include obstetric trauma, postpartum wellness, and medical student and resident education. Dr. Jotwani has published her work in many peer-reviewed journals, including Fertility and Sterility, JAMA Oncology, and Cell. She has also delivered presentations at national conferences, including the annual meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.
Dr. Jotwani is a junior fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a member of the North American Menopause Society. -
Maria Juarez-Reyes

BioDr. Juarez-Reyes received her PhD in Health Psychology, MD and Internal Medicine residency training from the University of California at San Francisco. Her focus during medical training was in Behavioral Medicine. In 2010, she became board certified in Integrative Medicine through American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine. She is currently a Clinical
Associate Professor in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health, Department of Medicine, Stanford University. She is currently the Director of Behavioral Health Group Medical Visits and serves as Site Director for Internal Medicine Residency program at Stanford. She developed “Beyond Stress”, a six-week group intervention for patients with stress, anxiety, and depression. This intervention has now been translated into Spanish, Mas Alla del Estres, and it is delivered to community based Spanish speaking cancer patients.
Her current research evaluates integrative behavioral health group medical visits and the relationship to anxiety, depression, burnout, and sleep in primary care and Spanish speaking community-based populations. Previous health disparities research includes tobacco cessation practices of community-based providers, breast cancer screening follow-up in Latinx women, Latinx adolescent reproductive behavior, medication eligibility criteria effects in ethnic subgroups, and TB treatment in urban county jails. She enjoys travel, walking with friends, anything science fiction and spending time with her family. -
Maximilian Julve

BioDr. Max Julve is a medical oncologist and Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine (Oncology) at Stanford University School of Medicine, with a clinical and research focus in solid tumor cellular therapy and melanoma.
Dr. Julve completed his medical training at Barts and The Royal London School of Medicine in the United Kingdom, followed by internal medicine training at teaching hospitals across North and Central London. He was subsequently awarded a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Academic Clinical Fellowship in Medical Oncology at Imperial College London. During this time, alongside his clinical training, he conducted translational research within the King’s College London Immunoengineering group, focusing on transcriptional optimization of CAR-T cell therapies.
Dr. Julve later completed advanced clinical fellowships in solid tumor cellular therapy and melanoma at The Royal Marsden Hospital, London, and earned an MD(Res) doctorate investigating the role of immunosuppressive granulocytes in patients receiving immunotherapy.
He is a clinical investigator specializing in melanoma, immuno-oncology, and solid tumor cellular therapy, with a particular emphasis on translating mechanistic insights from the laboratory into novel therapeutic strategies for patients. -
Patrick Jurney

Visiting Scholar, Chemical and Systems Biology OperationsBioPatrick Jurney is the Kordestani Endowed Chair and an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at San Jose State University. A Fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA), his research focuses on the intersection of fluid dynamics and cellular mechanics, with a particular emphasis on cardiovascular health and disease..
Dr. Jurney completed his Ph.D. in Thermal Fluid Systems at the University of Texas at Austin, where he designed and built microphysiological systems to investigate the role of nanoparticle properties in targeted drug delivery. Following his doctoral studies, he was a T-32 Fellow in Translational Engineering at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). During his fellowship, he worked with cardiovascular biomaterials and characterized how biomaterial properties influence endothelialization and thrombogenesis.
Currently, his research laboratory at SJSU investigates the role of fluid shear stress mechanotransduction on endothelial metabolic structure and function. Dr. Jurney is a pioneer in using holotomographic microscopy to study sub-cellular organelles in cardiovascular disease. He is also collaborating in the laboratory of Dr. Daria Mochly-Rosen to characterize the role of mitochondrial structure and dynamics in metabolic function in response to ischemia/reperfusion and other models of cardiovascular health and disease.

Prerak Juthani
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine
BioPrerak Juthani is a Bay Area native and completed his undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley, where he graduated summa cum laude and double-majored in Molecular Biology and Public Health. He then went on to Yale where he was able to bridge his love of medicine and entrepreneurship by completing the joint MD-MBA program. Afterward, he was lucky enough to come back home to complete his Internal Medicine residency at Stanford.
He is fascinated by medicine and how all the organ systems come together to create the human experience. He conducts research related to clinical outcomes in patients with Diabetic Foot Infections and also participates in various quality improvement initiatives in the hospital. Specifically, he is the co-founder of "The Kindness Coalition," which works to foster kindness among healthcare workers in order to create a more inclusive and collaborative healthcare environment.
Outside of the hospital, Prerak has a Youtube channel where he creates videos to increase transparency of what it’s like to be a medical student and resident; he also has a podcast called Red, White & Brown, which provides an insight into the novel immigrant experiences of first-generation South Asian immigrants. He is an active runner/marathoner, avid reader, and proud dog dad. -

Deborah Kado

BioDr. Kado is a board-certified, fellowship-trained doctor specializing in geriatrics. She serves as co-director of the Stanford Longevity Center. She is a professor of medicine and chief of research for the Geriatrics Section in the Department of Medicine, Division of Primary Care and Population Health. She is also the Director of the Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) at VA Palo Alto Health Care System.
For each patient, Dr. Kado prepares a personalized care plan. Her objective is to help all individuals maintain the best possible health and quality of life as they age.
A special interest of Dr. Kado is bone health. She has conducted extensive research focused on osteoporosis and the related disorder hyperkyphosis.
Since joining the UCLA faculty in 2000, she has received continuous funding for her research from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
She has over 100 peer-reviewed publications of her research findings in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, Osteoporosis International, Journal of Gerontology and Medical Sciences, Journal of Geriatric Oncology, Nature Communications, and other peer-reviewed journals.
In 2007, she defined hyperkyphosis as a new geriatric syndrome. Her discoveries in this field were first featured in the American College or Physician’s premier internal medicine journal Annals of Internal Medicine. Later, they also appeared in a dedicated chapter in UpToDate, the electronic resource providing evidence-based clinical decision support for doctors worldwide.
Prior to coming to Stanford, Dr. Kado practiced at UC San Diego where she started a dedicated osteoporosis clinic for patient care and research. She later broadened her research interests beyond musculoskeletal aging to study other aging-related topics such as the gut microbiome in older men and the effects of cancer treatments on aging in newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.
Dr. Kado is a California native. She trained at UCSF and UCLA. She also earned a Master of Science degree in epidemiology at the UCLA School of Public Health, sponsored by the John Hartford Foundation.
She is a member of the American Geriatrics Society, American Society of Bone and Mineral Research, Gerontological Society of America, The Endocrine Society, and other professional organizations. She co-chairs the NIH National Institute on Aging Workshop for the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research. She also participates in the Bone Health Working Group of the Society for Women’s Health Research. -

James Kahn

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy initial research activities involved antiretroviral and novel therapeutic treatments of HIV infection, understanding elements of HIV pathogenesis associated with acute HIV infection and post exposure prevention. My most recent scholarly activities concentrate on working as a team to capitalize on the data stored in electronic medical records, HIV disease modeling and using electronic medical records for outcome research and developing a mentorship program for early career scientists.
