    BioDr. Hu is Medical Director of the Acute Psychiatric Inpatient Unit at Stanford Hospital, specializing in the care of those with serious mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, bipolar and depression. She completed medical school and residency in psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, and fellowships in Pharmacology and Schizophrenia Research through the National Institutes of Health. She is also active in the minority issues and cultural psychiatry, and has received regional and national recognition for her clinical care, research and teaching.

    BioDr. Hu is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic spine surgeon. She is professor and vice chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and (by courtesy) Neurosurgery, and chief of the Division of Spine Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Hu completed her orthopedic surgery residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York and her fellowship training in spine and scoliosis surgery at Rancho Los Amigos Rehabilitation Center in Downey, California.

    Dr. Hu has extensive experience helping patients with a range of spinal conditions and injuries. She specializes in treating scoliosis (when the spine curves sideways), kyphosis (when the spine is more bent forward than normal) lumbar spine fractures, spondylolisthesis (when a vertebra moves out of place), disc degeneration, and spinal stenosis (spinal canal narrowing). Dr. Hu draws on her expertise to create a customized care plan for each of her patients.

    Dr. Hu has been the principal investigator in more than a dozen clinical trials and studies. She has been awarded multiple research grants from the North American Spine Society, Scoliosis Research Society, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Her research interests include the effects of preoperative pain medication on surgical outcomes as well as decreasing the risk of complications after spine surgery. She has also studied and tested new technologies that make spine surgery safer and more effective.

    She has published more than 145 articles in dozens of peer-reviewed journals, including Global Spine Journal, Journal of Spine Surgery, Spine, and Spine Deformity. She has written about a range of topics, including quality measures in spine surgery, spinal fusion techniques, spine tumor effects on spine stability and lumbar decompression for spinal stenosis. Additionally, Dr. Hu has written more than a dozen book chapters on spinal cord injuries, spine fractures, pediatric kyphosis, spondylolysis (vertebra fracture), and scoliosis.

    Dr. Hu has reviewed articles for Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons: A Comprehensive Review, and Spine. She has also served as associate editor for Spine Deformity and deputy editor for Global Spine Journal.

    Having delivered hundreds of presentations, papers, and lectures, Dr. Hu is widely considered one of the world’s leading experts in spine surgery. She has been invited to lecture to her colleagues all over the United States and around the world, including in Hong Kong, Canada, Brazil, Australia, Argentina, and Greece.

    Dr. Hu is a member of multiple professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Association, International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine, Orthopaedic Research Society, and Scoliosis Research Society. She is past president of the Scoliosis Research Society as well as of the American Orthopedic Association.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe ultimate goal of the laboratory is to develop efficient therapeutic strategies to achieve CNS neural repair, through promoting neuroprotection, axon regeneration and functional recovery.

    More specifically, we study retinal ganglion cell (RGC) and optic nerve in various optic neuropathies including traumatic, glaucomatous and inflammatory optic nerve injuries to fully understand the molecular mechanisms of CNS neurodegeneration and axon regeneration failure.

    BioDr. Huang received his pre-medicine and medical degrees from McGill University. He completed his obstetrics and gynecology residency training at McGill University Health Center. Dr. Huang also completed his Ph.D. degree in Experimental Medicine from McGill University during his residency training. Dr. Huang subsequently completed his reproductive endocrinology & infertility fellowship training at the Center for Reproductive Medicine and Infertility at Weill Cornell Medical College/New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Huang is board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Dr. Huang is the editor of the book “Development of In-Vitro Maturation of Human Oocytes”. Dr. Huang has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and published in leading scientific journals. Dr. Huang has also authored a large number of book chapters. Additionally, he has presented his research projects at numerous leading international medical conferences in the U.S., Europe and Asia. He has special research interests in oocyte cryopreservation, in vitro maturation of oocyte and fertility preservation.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsHow do cells determine their shape and grow?
    How do molecules inside cells get to the right place at the right time?

    Our group tries to answer these questions using a systems biology approach, in which we integrate interacting networks of protein and lipids with the physical forces determined by the spatial geometry of the cell. We use theoretical and computational techniques to make predictions that we can verify experimentally using synthetic, chemical, or genetic perturbations.

    BioCaitlin Hubbard is a scholar of early modern theater and performance history, specializing in Restoration drama, the seventeenth-century court masque, and Shakespeare.

    Her research focuses on the way that the practicalities and materiality of the stage space affect dramatic literature at the level of form. Her current book project, Reading Between the Scenes: Spectacle as Action and Idea in Early Modern English Theater, analyzes how the evolution of theater architecture and set design throughout the seventeenth-century, including the move from outdoor to indoor theaters and the introduction of changeable scenery, formally restructured both the craft of playwrighting and the experience of reading drama.

    Courses she teaches include The Shakespearean Stage, in which students take on the roles and recreate the documents used by an early modern playing company to experience how performance transforms text, and What Women Want in Medieval and Renaissance Literature, which recenters female voices and female desire in the canon of early English literature.

    BioProfessor Wray Huestis’ research concerns the molecular mechanisms whereby cells control their shape, motility, deformability and the structural integrity of their membranes. Metabolic control of interprotein and protein-lipid interactions is studied by a variety of biochemical, spectroscopic and radiochemical techniques, including fluorescence and EPR spectrometry, autoradiography and electron microscopy. The role of lipid metabolism and transport in regulating the fluid dynamics of cell suspensions (red blood cells, platelets, lymphocytes) is examined using circulating cells and cells grown in culture. Cell-cell and cell-liposome interactions are studied using model membrane systems with widely differing physical properties. Complexes of liposomes and encapsulated viruses are used as selective vectors to deliver water-soluble compounds across the membranes of intact cells. The particular projects described in the listed publications have as a common goal an understanding of the molecular workings of the cell membrane.

    BioDr. Michelle Huffaker is a board-certified, fellowship-trained allergist and immunologist with Stanford Health Care. She is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Huffaker specializes in diagnosing and treating allergies and health conditions that affect the immune system. She is particularly interested in asthma, food allergies, and allergic rhinitis.

    Dr. Huffaker’s research is focused on treatments that achieve long-lasting remission for allergic and immunologic diseases, such as food allergies and allergic rhinitis. Dr. Huffaker is the director of clinical and translational medicine for the allergy portfolio of the Immune Tolerance Network (ITN), a clinical research consortium funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The ITN focuses on achieving immune tolerance in conditions where the body attacks healthy cells (immune-mediated diseases). Dr. Huffaker leads the development, conduct, and analysis of ITN clinical trials.

    Dr. Huffaker has published her research in peer-reviewed journals, such as Allergy, The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, and World Allergy Organization Journal. She has presented to her peers at international, national, and regional meetings, including those of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI), and the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI).

    Dr. Huffaker is a fellow of AAAAI and a member of AAAAI, EAACI, and the Western Society of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology.

    BioDr. Adrian Hugenmatter joined ChEM-H as Director of Protein Engineering in 2021. In his role, Dr. Hugenmatter heads the Protein Engineering Laboratory at the Nucleus and is responsible for the development of therapeutic proteins at the Innovative Medicines Accelerator (IMA). Dr. Hugenmatter obtained his PhD in the laboratory of Prof. Donald Hilvert at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich, Switzerland), where he gained initial experience in the fields of enzymology, antibody engineering and directed evolution. Fascinated by protein engineering, he moved to the laboratory of Prof. Dan Tawfik at the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel), where he studied molecular evolution and its application in protein design. Dr. Hugenmatter then worked for more than a decade as a researcher and team leader at Roche. During this time, he was involved in the development and optimization of several antibody lead candidates for therapeutic applications in neuroscience and oncology.

    BioProfessor Huggins joined Stanford as Assistant Professor in 1954, was promoted to Associate Professor in 1958, and to Professor in 1962.

    His research activities have included studies of imperfections in crystals, solid-state reaction kinetics, ferromagnetism, mechanical behavior of solids, crystal growth, and a wide variety of topics in physical metallurgy, ceramics, solid state chemistry and electrochemistry. Primary attention has recently been focused on the development of understanding of solid state ionic phenomena involving solid electrolytes and mixed ionic-electronic conducting materials containing atomic or ionic species such as lithium, sodium or oxygen with unusually high mobility, as well as their use in novel battery and fuel cell systems, electrochromic optical devices, sensors, and in enhanced heterogeneous catalysis. He was also involved in the development of the understanding of the key role played by the phase composition and oxygen stoichiometry in determining the properties of high temperature oxide superconductors.

    Topics of particular recent interest have been related to energy conversion and storage, including hydrogen transport and hydride formation in metals, alloys and intermetallic compounds, and various aspects of materials and phenomena related to advanced lithium batteries.

    He has over 400 professional publications, including three books; "Advanced Batteries", published by Springer in 2009, "Energy Storage", published by Springer in 2010, and Energy Storage, Second Edition in 2016.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe are interested in the neuronal mechanisms that underlie synchronous oscillatory activity in the thalamus, cortex and the massively interconnected thalamocortical system. Such oscillations are related to cognitive processes, normal sleep activities and certain forms of epilepsy. Our approach is an analysis of the discrete components (cells, synapses, microcircuits) that make up thalamic and cortical circuits, and reconstitution of components into in silico computational networks.

    BioDr. Hui is a family medicine physician. He practices in the Stanford Family Medicine clinic in Palo Alto and is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Primary Care and Population Health. He serves as the point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) and Minor Procedure Service Director in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health.

    Dr. Hui completed fellowship training in point-of-care ultrasound at the University of Pennsylvania. He trained as a resident in family medicine at Stanford Health Care - O'Connor Hospital after earning his medical degree at Drexel University College of Medicine.

    He is interested in the utilization of point of care ultrasound in outpatient primary care.

    Dr. Hui is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, and Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.

    Dr. Hui enjoys long-distance running and bouldering in his free time. He is also a coffee enthusiast.

    BioMichaela Hulstyn is the Associate Director of Structured Liberal Education (SLE), a first-year residential education program at Stanford University.

    She is the author of Unselfing: Global French Literature at the Limits of Consciousness (University of Toronto Press, 2022.) Her research interests center on 20th- and 21st-century French and Francophone literature, phenomenology of the self and intersubjectivity, cognitive approaches to transcultural literature, and literature as ethical philosophy. Her work has appeared in MLN, Philosophy and Literature, and Contemporary French and Francophone Studies, among other places.

    Michaela previously held academic appointments at Florida State University and Reed College.

    BioDr. Hung is a fellowship-trained ophthalmologist, practicing at the Byers Eye Institute, and also a clinical instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Hung specializes in diagnosing and treating ocular inflammatory diseases, such as uveitis, iridocyclitis, and scleritis, as well as retinal vascular diseases, including age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

    Dr. Hung’s research interests include ocular inflammation, infections, hereditary ocular inflammatory diseases, and novel approaches in managing ocular inflammatory diseases. His research has advanced screening, diagnostics, and treatment for patients with uveitis, lens disorders, retinal diseases, glaucoma, and rare ocular conditions. Dr. Hung’s most recent research explores the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the identification of ocular inflammatory diseases.

    Dr. Hung has published his work in major national and international peer-reviewed journals, including American Journal of Ophthalmology, British Journal of Ophthalmology, RETINA, Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology, and Survey of Ophthalmology. He has presented at national and international conferences on the use of technology in uveitis management.

    Dr. Hung is a member of many professional organizations, including the American Society of Retina Specialists, the International Ocular Inflammation Society, the Foster Ocular Immunology Society, and the European Society of Retina Specialists.

    BioMatthew Hung, M.D. is a radiologist specializing in Vascular & Interventional Radiology. Dr. Hung earned his M.D. from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in 2018 and was a recipient of the David Geffen Medical Scholarship. He completed his Transitional Year internship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 2019. Following completion of his integrated Interventional Radiology/Diagnostic Radiology residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 2024, he joined Stanford University Medical Center where he is currently a clinical assistant professor of radiology.

    Dr. Hung specializes in lymphatic interventions, adrenal vein sampling, interventional oncology (minimally invasive cancer treatments including ablation, chemoembolization and radioembolization), the treatment of cirrhosis (end-stage liver disease) and portal hypertension, as well as therapies for uterine fibroids (uterine artery embolization) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (prostate artery embolization).

    Dr. Hung is active in clinical research and his research interests include the above clinical domains as well as topics in general interventional radiology ranging from complex drainage to venous access device infections. He has published in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR) and presented at several professional society meetings, including the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR). He was also a recipient of the SIR Radiology Resident Research Grant, investigating quality of life and muscle wasting in patients with refractory ascites.

    BioSharon Hung MD, FACP is a board-certified Internal Medicine physician practicing at the Stanford Internal Medicine Clinic in Santa Clara. She earned her MD from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and completed her internal medicine residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Prior to joining Stanford, she served on the faculty at the University of Arizona College of Medicine.

    Dr. Hung is the Director of Women’s Health for the Department of Primary Care and Population Health. In this role, she served as course director for Stanford CME’s Women’s Health Conference and continues to co-direct the annual Stanford CME Menopause and Healthy Aging Conference. She also hosts the Stanford CME/YouTube Women’s Health Vodcast, where she interviews leading experts and explores timely, clinically relevant topics in women’s health.

    Her scholarly interests include breast cancer screening, steatotic liver disease, osteoporosis, and weight gain during the perimenopausal period. Clinically, she is dedicated to preventive medicine and the management of chronic conditions such as pre-diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome, as well as guiding women through the perimenopausal transition. Dr. Hung also leads bi-monthly group patient visits focused on the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. She is passionate about inspiring trainees and works with both Stanford Internal Medicine residents and Physician Assistant students.

    She is conversational in both Spanish and Mandarin.

As a core member of the Bay Area theatre company, Word for Word, Stephanie has acted in numerous productions, including Tobias Wolff’s Sanity, Colm Tóibín’s Silence, Upton Sinclair’s Oil! and Susan Glaspell’s A Jury of her Peers. She was nominated for a Bay Area Critics Circle award for her performance as the mysterious Old Woman on the train in Kevin Barry's short story Wintersongs. Stephanie played Lizzie Borden in The Fall River Axe Murders by Angela Carter directed by Amy Freed. For Word for Word, Stephanie directed the productions of Bullet in the Brain and Lady's Dream by Tobias Wolff, and All Aunt Hagar’s Children by Edward P. Jones, which played at the Z Space before touring France. Also, she directed the noir thriller Angel Face by Cornell Woolrich. She has acted with Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Campo Santo, Aurora Theatre, the Magic Theatre, Berkeley Shakespeare, the One Act Theater, and in New York at La Mama. For two years with Pulp Playhouse, Stephanie performed late-night comedy improv with O-Lan Jones and Mike McShane at the Eureka Theater. She has taught voice at ACT in the Summer Training Congress, and at the University of San Francisco, San Francisco State University, Chabot College, and Sonoma State University. Stephanie text and voice coaches many of the mainstage productions in the TAPS Department at Stanford University. She has directed a number of university productions. Most recently at Stanford, she directed Three Sisters by Anton Chekhov, which was attended by the entire freshmen COLLEGE cohort. At USF, she directed Twelfth Night, and adapted and directed Alice Munro’s The View from Castle Rock. At Sonoma State she directed The Green Bird by Carlo Gozzi, Top Girls by Caryl Churchill, Dancing at Lughnasa by Brian Friel, and The Exception and the Rule by Bertolt Brecht. Her training includes an MFA from the American Conservatory Theater and certification as an Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework. Stephanie is committed to creating and teaching ensemble-based theater with a focus on heightened language.

    BioHuntington is Executive Director of Stanford University's Energy Modeling Forum, where he conducts studies to improve the usefulness of models for understanding energy and environmental problems. In 2005 the Forum received the prestigious Adelman-Frankel Award from the International Association for Energy Economics for its "unique and innovative contribution to the field of energy economics."

    His current research interests are modeling energy security, energy price shocks, energy market impacts of environmental policies, and international natural gas and LNG markets. In 2002 he won the Best Paper Award from the Energy Journal for a paper co-authored with Professor Dermot Gately of New York University.

    He is a Senior Fellow and a past-President of the United States Association for Energy Economics and a member of the National Petroleum Council. He was also Vice-President for Publications for the International Association for Energy Economics and a member of the American Statistical Association's Committee on Energy Data. Previously, he served on a joint USA-Russian National Academy of Sciences Panel on energy conservation research and development.

    Huntington has testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and the California Energy Commission.

    Prior to coming to Stanford in 1980, he held positions in the corporate and government sectors with Data Resources Inc., the U.S. Federal Energy Administration, and the Public Utilities Authority in Monrovia, Liberia (as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer).

    BioDr. Hussain completed her medical education in Karachi, Pakistan, at the Aga Khan University in 2005 and travelled to the US to pursue her interest in Psychiatry. During residency at the Mayo Clinic, Minnesota she was awarded the Mayo clinic M.J Martin award for excellence in CL psychiatry. It was at Mayo that she solidified her interest and identity as a Consultation Liaison Psychiatrist. Eliminating Mind body dualism while educating others and addressing stigma against psychiatry seemed like an effortless choice and so she pursued a CL fellowship at Columbia University in New York.
    Visa obligations took her first to the UK where she utilized her experience in evaluating CL service performance in large teaching hospitals in the NHS. She subsequently moved back to the US to serve as the sole outpatient provider for eleven different counties in Northwest Wisconsin with a panel of over 1500 patients at a Mayo clinic satellite. During this time, she was an active board member of NAMI, taught psychopathology in Crisis Intervention Training for the Eau Claire, and Chippewa Police departments and avidly contributed to international health blogs and newspaper articles with an aim to decrease stigma against psychiatry
    In Pursuit of a stimulating academic environment and a return to her true passion, CL psychiatry, she joined Stanford as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine in 2017. As member of the Education Committee and as of 2022, the CLP Fellowship Associate Program Director, She has been active in helping to restructure the fellowship education experience, initiating several new seminars including the immersion series, the book seminar, and organizing the Chief of service rounds. Her clinical focus is transplant psychiatry, and she serves as the liaison to the Liver and Kidney transplant programs at Stanford. She continues to be engaged with the community and currently participates in the Liver Education and Awareness Program(LEAP) , an endeavor educating patients about Fatty Liver disease.     BioJackelyn Hwang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Director of the Changing Cities Research Lab. Jackelyn’s main research interests are in the fields of urban sociology, race and ethnicity, immigration, and inequality. In particular, her research uses innovative data, measures, and methods to answer: how do neighborhood-level dynamics that are typically racialized drive changes in US residential segregation? Her projects focus on how residential sorting mechanisms shape how gentrification unfolds over time and space, the consequences of gentrification on residential displacement, and developing data and measurement infrastructures for improving measures of gentrification, including developing automated methods using computer vision to measure visible neighborhood conditions and their changes over time from Google Street View imagery. By improving our understanding of urban change and segregation, her work aims to advance policy solutions that promote racial equity as cities change.

    Jackelyn received her B.A.S. in Sociology and Mathematics from Stanford University and her Ph.D. in Sociology and Social Policy from Harvard University. After completing her Ph.D., she was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Office of Population Research at Princeton University. Her research has been supported by the American Sociological Association, the Joint Center for Housing Studies, the National Science Foundation, among others.     Challenges in energy sciences, green technology, transportation, and in general, engineering design and prototyping are routinely tackled using numerical simulations and physical testing. Computations barely feasible two decades ago on the largest available supercomputers, have now become routine using turnkey commercial software running on a laptop. Demands on the analysis of new engineering systems are becoming more complex and multidisciplinary in nature, but exascale-ready computers are on the horizon. What will be the next frontier? Can we channel this enormous power into an increased ability to simulate and, ultimately, to predict, design and control? In my opinion two roadblocks loom ahead: the development of credible models for increasingly complex multi-disciplinary engineering applications and the design of algorithms and computational strategies to cope with real-world uncertainty.
    My research objective is to pursue concerted innovations in physical modeling, numerical analysis, data fusion, probabilistic methods, optimization and scientific computing to fundamentally change our present approach to engineering simulations relevant to broad areas of fluid mechanics, transport phenomena and energy systems. The key realization is that computational engineering has largely ignored natural variability, lack of knowledge and randomness, targeting an idealized deterministic world. Embracing stochastic scientific computing and data/algorithms fusion will enable us to minimize the impact of uncertainties by designing control and optimization strategies that are robust and adaptive. This goal can only be accomplished by developing innovative computational algorithms and new, physics-based models that explicitly represent the effect of limited knowledge on the quantity of interest.

    Multidisciplinary Teaching

    I consider the classical boundaries between disciplines outdated and counterproductive in seeking innovative solutions to real-world problems. The design of wind turbines, biomedical devices, jet engines, electronic units, and almost every other engineering system requires the analysis of their flow, thermal, and structural characteristics to ensure optimal performance and safety. The continuing growth of computer power and the emergence of general-purpose engineering software has fostered the use of computational analysis as a complement to experimental testing in multiphysics settings. Virtual prototyping is a staple of modern engineering practice! I have designed a new undergraduate course as an introduction to Computational Engineering, covering theory and practice across multidisciplanary applications. The emphasis is on geometry modeling, mesh generation, solution strategy and post-processing for diverse applications. Using classical flow/thermal/structural problems, the course develops the essential concepts of Verification and Validation for engineering simulations, providing the basis for assessing the accuracy of the results.

    She graduated from the University of Houston and earned her medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine. She subsequently completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency at Louisiana State University School of Medicine Baton Rouge. After residency, she was an AAMC-CDC Public Health Policy Fellow able to serve in the CDC Emergency Operations Center and contribute to research for healthcare providers regarding the management of the Zika virus in pregnant persons. She completed her Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship at Stanford in 2022.

    Dr. Igbinosa is passionate about community-engaged approaches to bridge gaps in evidence-based care for birthing communities and collaborates with local and national policy committees to raise awareness for reproductive justice in maternal health. In 2023, 2he was awarded the inaugural Maternal Health Implementation Science Physician Research Scholar with AMETHIST @Penn (Achieving Maternal Empowerment and Transforming Health at University of Pennsylvania) and applies to the principles learned to many aspects of her ongoing research. Her current research endeavors include co-investigator for Stanford's PHRISM: preventing inequities in hemorrhage related severe maternal morbidity, primary investigator for NOURISH - prenatal nutrition education for community health workers and doulas, as well as several hospital quality initiative efforts to improve the screening, management, and treatment of iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy.     BioDonald L. Iglehart is a John von Neumann Theory Prize recipient who has made fundamental contributions to performance analysis, optimization, and simulation of stochastic systems. Iglehart received his Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics from Cornell in 1956, his Master’s degree in Mathematical Statistics from Stanford University in 1959, and his PhD in the same subject from Stanford in 1961. His dissertation was supervised by Herbert E. Scarf and Samuel Karlin, and the topic was on dynamic programming and stationary analysis of inventory problems. He taught at Cornell University from 1961 to 1967 and came to Stanford in 1967, where he has been emeritus since 1999. In1976, he spent a very productive year as an Overseas Fellow at Churchill College at Cambridge University. In his capacity as a PhD advisor, he has had many notable students, including Peter Glynn, Peter Haas, Phil Heidelberger, Doug Kennedy, and Ward Whitt.

    Iglehart was jointly awarded the John von Neumann Theory Prize in 2002 with Cyrus Derman, the same year he was named an inaugural Fellow of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences. He was recognized for having pioneered and developed diffusion limits and approximations for heavily congested stochastic systems. His ideas provided tractable limiting processes and readily computable approximations for complex queueing and other stochastic systems for which closed-form solutions have proved intractable. Iglehart’s original research and contributions have heavily influenced queueing theory in the years since their publication, and his papers have been cited in hundreds of publications. Some of his other work has focused on inventory and distribution problems.

    Iglehart was also honored by the INFORMS Simulation Society in 2012 with its highest honor, the Lifetime Professional Achievement Award (LPAA). His foundational work in that field recognized and exploited the underlying stochastic structure of simulation as a means of producing enhanced simulation methodologies. For example, he introduced and led the development of the regenerative method for stochastic simulation output analysis, inspiring a flood of significant contributions to simulation methodology. In the late 1980s, Iglehart and Glynn incorporated such techniques as importance sampling into stochastic simulations. The LPAA also noted his ability to clearly organize and articulate deep theory in his presentations and writing, and recognized his education of Ph.D. students who have had, individually and cumulatively, a profound impact on simulation education and research. The citation for his award states that "It is no exaggeration to say that Don Iglehart’s contributions made simulation a respectable research discipline in some circles of the operations research community."

    In addition to being an INFORMS Fellow, Iglehart was elected in 1999 to the National Academy of Engineering, having been selected for his contributions to queueing theory, simulation methodology, inventory control, and diffusion approximations. He was also honored in 1971 through his induction as a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.

    BioDr. Ikeda is a physician-scientist who develops innovative diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for patients with cardiovascular disease. Based on his clinical experience as a cardiologist, he has become aware of major clinical shortcomings, specifically in the current pharmaceutical therapies for myocardial infarction (MI) and chronic heart failure (HF). Some evidence-based drug therapies, including β-blockers, ivabradine, and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone antagonists are difficult to apply to critical patients due to adverse side effects. Drugs that have shown efficacy in basic animal experiments have failed to show significant benefits in clinical trials. To address these problems, he moved to academia to conduct translational research. During his graduate training in the Egashira Lab, he focused on drug delivery systems (DDS) that target mitochondria in animal models of MI. He obtained advanced skills in molecular biology, mitochondrial bioenergetics, and animal surgery. He realized the importance of translational research and the great potential of DDS to overcome many clinical problems. He developed nanoparticle-mediated DDS containing cyclosporine for the treatment of patients with MI. He published a first-author paper and received academic awards for his novel science. Since becoming a postdoctoral fellow in the Yang Lab, he has continued to build upon his previous training in translational research. He is currently developing an innovative therapy, namely, extracellular vesicles-mediated mitochondrial transfer for mitochondria-related diseases such as heart failure and mitochondrial disease.

She received her Ph.D. in History and minor in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (FGSS) from Stanford University in 2023, where she now serves as the Choi-Lam H&S Lecturer in Undergraduate Teaching. She offers courses in the Department of History and the Stanford Introductory Studies Program.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsJen is interested in the genetic factors that lead to abnormal beta-cell function and insulin secretion, causing disorders such as hyperinsulinism and neonatal diabetes. Jen’s current research focus is the use of zebrafish models, combined with genetics and genomics, to understand cellular and molecular mechanisms of glucose metabolism and elucidate previously unknown players involved in the regulation of insulin secretion.
