Kavya Sreedhar
Ph.D. Student in Electrical Engineering, admitted Autumn 2019
BioKavya Sreedhar is an electrical engineering PhD candidate advised by Mark Horowitz. Her research interests include architecture design and developing hardware accelerators for cryptography and machine learning applications. On the cryptography side, she has worked on designing a fast extended GCD accelerator for constant-time modular inversion and verifiable delay functions. On the deep learning side, she is working on dynamically adapting the execution of state-of-the-art models for use in real-time systems and accelerating dynamic transformer models for computer vision in an ongoing collaboration with NVIDIA. She previously worked with the Agile Hardware (AHA) Project in developing Lake, a parameterizable memory generator that can be configured at runtime to support different image processing and machine learning applications. As part of her research, she has worked on taping out three chips in SKY130nm, GF12nm, and TSMC16nm. Kavya is supported by the Quad Fellowship (2023 to 2024) and Stanford's Knight-Hennessy Graduate Fellowship (2019 to 2022). She received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and BEM (Business, Economics, & Management) from Caltech in 2019 and a M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford in 2021.

Maxwell Bradley Strange

BioMax is a Ph.D. student in Electrical Engineering advised by Mark Horowitz. His research focuses on developing infrastructure and tools to facilitate agile hardware development as part of the ongoing efforts by the Stanford AHA! Research Center. His research interests also include domain-specific hardware architectures, hardware/software co-design, and embedded systems design. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 2017 with a B.S. in Computer Engineering and Computer Science.

Fouad Tobagi
Professor of Electrical Engineering
BioTobagi works on network control mechanisms for handling multimedia traffic (voice, video and TCP- based applications) and on the performance assessment of networked multimedia applications using user-perceived quality measures. He also investigates the design of wireless networks, including QoS-based media access control and network resource management, as well as network architectures and infrastructures for the support of mobile users, all meeting the requirements of multimedia traffic. He also investigates the design of metropolitan and wide area networks combining optical and electronic networking technologies, including topological design, capacity provisioning, and adaptive routing.

Caroline Trippel
Assistant Professor of Computer Science and of Electrical Engineering
BioCaroline Trippel is an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Departments at Stanford University working in the area of computer architecture. Prior to starting at Stanford, Trippel spent nine months as a Research Scientist at Facebook in the FAIR SysML group. Her work focuses on promoting correctness and security as first-order computer systems design metrics (akin to performance and power). A central theme of her work is leveraging formal methods techniques to design and verify hardware systems in order to ensure that they can provide correctness and security guarantees for the applications they intend to support. Additionally, Trippel has been recently exploring the role of architecture in enabling privacy-preserving machine learning, the role of machine learning in hardware systems optimizations, particularly in the context of neural recommendation, and opportunities for improving datacenter and at-scale machine learning reliability.
Trippel's research has influenced the design of the RISC-V ISA memory consistency model both via her formal analysis of its draft specification and her subsequent participation in the RISC-V Memory Model Task Group. Additionally, her work produced a novel methodology and tool that synthesized two new variants of the now-famous Meltdown and Spectre attacks.
Trippel's research has been recognized with IEEE Top Picks distinctions, the 2020 ACM SIGARCH/IEEE CS TCCA Outstanding Dissertation Award, and the 2020 CGS/ProQuest® Distinguished Dissertation Award in Mathematics, Physical Sciences, & Engineering. She was also awarded an NVIDIA Graduate Fellowship (2017-2018) and selected to attend the 2018 MIT Rising Stars in EECS Workshop. Trippel completed her PhD in Computer Science at Princeton University and her BS in Computer Engineering at Purdue University. -

Benjamin Van Roy

BioBenjamin Van Roy is a Professor at Stanford University, where he has served on the faculty since 1998. His current research focuses on reinforcement learning. Beyond academia, he leads a DeepMind Research team in Mountain View, and has also led research programs at Unica (acquired by IBM), Enuvis (acquired by SiRF), and Morgan Stanley.
He is a Fellow of INFORMS and IEEE and has served on the editorial boards of Machine Learning, Mathematics of Operations Research, for which he co-edited the Learning Theory Area, Operations Research, for which he edited the Financial Engineering Area, and the INFORMS Journal on Optimization. He received the SB in Computer Science and Engineering and the SM and PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, all from MIT, where his doctoral research was advised by John N. Tstitsiklis. He has been a recipient of the MIT George C. Newton Undergraduate Laboratory Project Award, the MIT Morris J. Levin Memorial Master's Thesis Award, the MIT George M. Sprowls Doctoral Dissertation Award, the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the Stanford Tau Beta Pi Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the Management Science and Engineering Department's Graduate Teaching Award, and the Lanchester Prize. He was the plenary speaker at the 2019 Allerton Conference on Communications, Control, and Computing. He has held visiting positions as the Wolfgang and Helga Gaul Visiting Professor at the University of Karlsruhe, the Chin Sophonpanich Foundation Professor and the InTouch Professor at Chulalongkorn University, a Visiting Professor at the National University of Singapore, and a Visiting Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. -

Jelena Vuckovic

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsJelena Vuckovic’s research interests are broadly in the areas of nanophotonics, quantum and nonlinear optics. Her lab develops semiconductor-based photonic chip-scale systems with goals to probe new regimes of light-matter interaction, as well as to enable platforms for future classical and quantum information processing technologies. She also works on transforming conventional photonics with the concept of inverse design, where optimal photonic devices are designed from scratch using computer algorithms with little to no human input. Her current projects include quantum and nonlinear optics, cavity QED, and quantum information processing with color centers in diamond and in silicon carbide, heterogeneously integrated chip-scale photonic systems, and on-chip laser driven particle accelerators.

Adam Wang

BioMy research group develops technologies for advanced x-ray and CT imaging, including artificial intelligence for CT acquisition, reconstruction, and image processing; spectral imaging, including photon counting CT (PCCT) and dual-layer flat-panel detectors; novel system and detector designs; and their applications in diagnostic imaging and image-guided procedures. I am also the Director of the Photon Counting CT Lab, Zeego Lab, and Tabletop X-Ray Lab.
I completed my PhD in Electrical Engineering at Stanford, developing strategies for maximizing the information content of dual energy CT and photon counting detectors. I then pursued a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins in the I-STAR Lab, developing reconstruction and registration methods for x-ray based image-guided surgery. I was then a Senior Scientist at Varian Medical Systems, developing x-ray/CT methods for image-guided radiation therapy, before returning to Stanford in 2018, where I now lead a comprehensive research program in advanced x-ray and CT imaging systems and methods, with funding from NIH, DOD, DOE, and industry partners. -
Shan X. Wang

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsShan Wang was named the Leland T. Edwards Professor in the School of Engineering in 2018. He directs the Center for Magnetic Nanotechnology and is a leading expert in biosensors, information storage and spintronics. His research and inventions span across a variety of areas including magnetic biochips, in vitro diagnostics, cancer biomarkers, magnetic nanoparticles, magnetic sensors, magnetoresistive random access memory, and magnetic integrated inductors.

Itschak Weissman

BioTsachy's research focuses on Information Theory, Data Compression and Communications, Statistical Signal Processing, Machine Learning, the interplay between them, and their applications, with recent focus on applications to genomic data compression and processing. He is inventor of several patents and involved in several companies as member of the technical board. IEEE fellow, he serves on the board of governors of the information theory society as well as the editorial boards of the Transactions on Information Theory and Foundations and Trends in Communications and Information Theory. BioGordon Wetzstein is an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and, by courtesy, of Computer Science at Stanford University. He is the leader of the Stanford Computational Imaging Lab and a faculty co-director of the Stanford Center for Image Systems Engineering. At the intersection of computer graphics and vision, artificial intelligence, computational optics, and applied vision science, Prof. Wetzstein's research has a wide range of applications in next-generation imaging, wearable computing, and neural rendering systems. Prof. Wetzstein is a Fellow of Optica and the recipient of numerous awards, including an NSF CAREER Award, an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, an ACM SIGGRAPH Significant New Researcher Award, a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), an SPIE Early Career Achievement Award, an Electronic Imaging Scientist of the Year Award, an Alain Fournier Ph.D. Dissertation Award as well as many Best Paper and Demo Awards.

Jennifer Widom

BioJennifer Widom is the Frederick Emmons Terman Dean of the School of Engineering and the Fletcher Jones Professor in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. She served as Computer Science Department Chair from 2009-2014 and School of Engineering Senior Associate Dean from 2014-2016. Jennifer received her Bachelor's degree from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 1982 and her Computer Science Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1987. She was a Research Staff Member at the IBM Almaden Research Center before joining the Stanford faculty in 1993. Her research interests span many aspects of nontraditional data management. She is an ACM Fellow and a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences; she received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2000, the ACM SIGMOD Edgar F. Codd Innovations Award in 2007, the ACM-W Athena Lecturer Award in 2015, and the EPFL-WISH Foundation Erna Hamburger Prize in 2018.

Elizabeth Wig

BioHi, I’m Elizabeth Wig! I’m a PhD student in electrical engineering at Stanford, and I research how we can use radar remote sensing to understand more about processes on Earth. I work mainly on InSAR (interferometric synthetic aperture radar), which looks at how radar phase changes from one image to another to tell us how Earth is changing. I’m particularly interested in measuring how vegetation and soil moisture change in dynamic environments, like agricultural areas and permafrost regions. My favorite types of problems involve modeling how electromagnetic waves interact with their environment, and then combining those models with real-world data to learn more about the environment by analyzing the waves that pass through it.

Jeffrey P. Wilde

BioJeffrey P. Wilde received a Ph.D. degree in Applied Physics from Stanford University, with thesis work in the area of holographic data storage. In 1996, he co-founded Quinta Corporation to develop high-capacity optical disk drive technology; the company was acquired by Seagate Technology in 1997, and he subsequently served as the Director of Research West for Seagate. In 2000 he co-founded Capella Photonics, a manufacturer of wavelength switching products for the telecommunications industry. Capella was acquired by Alcatel-Lucent in 2013.
Since 2005 he has provided optical design consulting services to numerous companies, as well as serving as a Research Consultant with Ginzton Laboratory at Stanford University, where he has participated in research on advanced fiber communication technologies, optical superresolution imaging, and helped establish a program on X-ray phase-contrast imaging for security applications. He has also served as an adjunct lecturer for EE236A (Modern Optics) and EE347 (Optical Methods in Engineering Science, aka Lens Design). Dr. Wilde has 31 journal publications, 39 issued US patents, and is a Senior Member of OSA. -
Keith Winstein

BioKeith Winstein is an associate professor of computer science and, by courtesy, of electrical engineering at Stanford University. His research group creates new kinds of networked systems by rethinking abstractions around communication, compression, and computing. Some of his group’s research has found broader use, including the Mosh tool, the Puffer video-streaming site, the Lepton compression tool, the Mahimahi network emulators, and the gg lambda-computing framework. He has received the SIGCOMM Rising Star Award, the Sloan Research Fellowship, the NSF CAREER Award, the Usenix NSDI Community Award (2020, 2017), the Usenix ATC Best Paper Award, the Applied Networking Research Prize, the SIGCOMM Doctoral Dissertation Award, and a Sprowls award for best doctoral thesis in computer science at MIT. Winstein previously served as a staff reporter at The Wall Street Journal and worked at Ksplice, a startup company (now part of Oracle) where he was the vice president of product management and business development and also cleaned the bathroom. He did his undergraduate and graduate work at MIT.

BioH.-S. Philip Wong is the Willard R. and Inez Kerr Bell Professor in the School of Engineering at Stanford University. He joined Stanford University as Professor of Electrical Engineering in 2004. From 1988 to 2004, he was with the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. From 2018 to 2020, he was on leave from Stanford and was the Vice President of Corporate Research at TSMC, the largest semiconductor foundry in the world, and since 2020 remains the Chief Scientist of TSMC in a consulting, advisory role.
He is a Fellow of the IEEE and received the IEEE Andrew S. Grove Award, the IEEE Technical Field Award to honor individuals for outstanding contributions to solid-state devices and technology, as well as the IEEE Electron Devices Society J.J. Ebers Award, the society’s highest honor to recognize outstanding technical contributions to the field of electron devices that have made a lasting impact.
He is the founding Faculty Co-Director of the Stanford SystemX Alliance – an industrial affiliate program focused on building systems and the faculty director of the Stanford Nanofabrication Facility – a shared facility for device fabrication on the Stanford campus that serves academic, industrial, and governmental researchers across the U.S. and around the globe, sponsored in part by the National Science Foundation. He is the Principal Investigator of the Microelectronics Commons California-Pacific-Northwest AI Hardware Hub, a consortium of over 40 companies and academic institutions funded by the CHIPS Act. He is a member of the US Department of Commerce Industrial Advisory Committee on microelectronics. -

Bruce A. Wooley
The Robert L. and Audrey S. Hancock Professor in the School of Engineering, Emeritus
BioBruce Wooley is the Robert L. and Audrey S. Hancock Professor of Engineering, Emeritus, in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. He received a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1970, and from 1970 to 1984 he was a member of the research staff at Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, NJ. He joined the faculty at Stanford in 1984. At Stanford he has served as the Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering, the Senior Associate Dean of Engineering and the Director of the Integrated Circuits Laboratory. His research is in the field of integrated circuit design, where his interests include low-power mixed-signal circuit design, oversampling analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion, circuit design techniques for video and image data acquisition, high-speed embedded memory, high-performance packaging and testing, and circuits for wireless and wireline communications.
Prof. Wooley is a Fellow of the IEEE and a past President of the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society. He has served as the Editor of the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits and as the Chairman of both the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) and the Symposium on VLSI Circuits. Awards he has received include the University Medal from the University of California, Berkeley, the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits Best Paper Award, the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the EECS Department at the University of California, Berkeley, and the IEEE Donald O. Pederson Award in Solid-State Circuits. -
Xiangjin Wu

BioYu Wu is a postdoctoral scholar in Ginzton Laboratory. She received her Ph.D. degree in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at UCLA in 2023 and B.S. degree in Physics from Nanjing University in 2017. Her research interests primarily center on nanophotonics, terahertz techniques, quantum cascade lasers, and frequency comb.
