    BioI am a Research Scientist in the Roberts Vision Development & Oculomotor Lab at Stanford University’s Department of Ophthalmology, working at the intersection of vision science, neuroscience, and experimental psychology. My current research uses eye-tracking, photorefraction, and psychophysics to study oculomotor development and visual function in amblyopia, strabismus, and concussion. I also work on developing methodology to record accommodative measurements and gaze behaviour in dynamic, naturalistic settings.

    I completed my PhD in Experimental Psychology at Birkbeck, University of London (UK), where I used advanced eye-tracking techniques to study the influence of postnatal experience on social gaze behaviour. Prior to joining Stanford, I also worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bath (UK), developing empirical human-robot interaction studies to inform the ethical design of humanoid robots.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy laboratory is focused on understanding the cellular mechanisms which mediate end-organ failure in pediatric sepsis. Our current work focuses on determining the role of altered mitochondrial dynamics in sepsis-induced multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Specifically, we focus on understanding the mechanisms that mediate derangements in mitochondrial fission and autophagy in sepsis.

    Kimberly Glenn Professor and Professor of Political Science

    BioJens Hainmueller is the Kimberly Glenn Professor of Political Science and Director of Graduate Studies in Stanford University’s Department of Political Science. He co-directs the Stanford Immigration Policy Lab and is a Faculty Affiliate at the Stanford Center for Causal Science, the Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, and the Europe Center. He is also a member of the Maternal & Child Health Research Institute at Stanford’s School of Medicine.

    Hainmueller’s research spans statistical methods, causal inference, immigration, and political economy, and he has published nearly 70 articles with over 40,000 citations. Many of his works appear in top journals, including Science, Nature, and PNAS, as well as leading field journals in political science, statistics, economics, and business.

    He has developed widely adopted statistical methods—such as synthetic control methods, entropy balancing, Average Marginal Component Effects, and GeoMatch algorithms—and created several open-source software packages that support empirical research across disciplines. At Stanford, he teaches courses on causal inference and data science.

    Hainmueller’s contributions have earned him prestigious awards, including the Gosnell Prize for Excellence in Political Methodology, the Warren Miller Prize, the Robert H. Durr Award, and the Emerging Scholar Award from the Society of Political Methodology. He is an Andrew Carnegie Fellow, an elected Fellow of the Society of Political Methodology, and holds an honorary degree from the European University Institute (EUI).

    He earned his PhD from Harvard University, with additional studies at the London School of Economics, Brown University, and the University of Tuebingen. Before joining Stanford, he was a faculty member at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy primary area of scholarly and clinical interest is the pathogenesis of problem behaviors shown by individuals diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), particularly those with neurogenetic forms of IDD, such as fragile X syndrome, Cornelia de Lange syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome. My work aims to both advance understanding of these disorders and to identify effective new treatment approaches for pediatric and adult patient populations by state-of-the-art methodologies, such as brain imaging, eye tracking and functional analysis to determine how environmental and biological factors affect the development of aberrant behaviors in these syndromes. The end goal of my research is to create patient-specific methods for treating the symptoms of these disorders.

    BioMeghan Halley, PhD, MPH is Assistant Professor of Pediatrics (Research) in the Center for Biomedical Ethics at Stanford University School of Medicine. With training in medical anthropology, public health and health services research, her scholarship draws on multidisciplinary theoretical and methodological approaches to examine ethical, legal, social and policy questions arising in clinical and translational research. Her areas of expertise include the ethics of new genomic technologies, normative frameworks for integrating research and clinical care, challenges and opportunities in patient and community engagement, and the epistemic and ethical implications of valuing new health interventions. Her work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, and the National Science Foundation and published in high-impact journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Genetics, and the American Journal of Bioethics.

    The primary objective of this project is to use advanced, multi-modal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, analyses of X chromosome parent-of-origin and cognitive-behavioral assessment to elucidate the effects of monosomy and X-linked imprinting on neurodevelopment and neural function in a large cohort of young girls with Turner syndrome, pre-estrogen replacement.

He developed and pioneered the “unifocalization” procedure, in which a single procedure is used to repair a complex and life-threatening congenital heart defect rather than several staged open-heart surgeries as performed by other surgeons.

    BioStella Hartono, MD PhD is a board-certified allergy/immunology physician and clinical researcher. She specializes in diagnosing and treating immunology and allergic conditions, with a focus on immunodeficiency, immune dysregulation, hyper eosinophilia, and pet allergies.

    Dr. Hartono’s clinical research focuses on the role of age-associated B cells in vaccine response and the aging immune system. She is also interested in improving diagnosis and treatment options for patients with CVID (common variable immunodeficiency) and SAD (specific antibody deficiency).     BioI am a brain tumor neurosurgeon, treating patients with malignant and benign tumors, including gliomas, brain metastases, meningiomas, and schwannomas. I direct the Stanford Brain Tumor Center and the Stanford Brain Metastasis Consortium, collaborative unions of physicians and scientists looking to improve our understanding and treatment of brain tumors. My laboratory seeks greater understanding of the mechanisms driving tumorigenesis and disease progression in malignant brain tumors. We study how rare cancer cell populations survive and migrate in the brain, inadvertently supported by native brain cells. We develop novel cerebrospinal fluid-based biomarkers to track brain cancer treatment response, relapse, and neurotoxicity. Our bedside-to-bench-to-bedside research model builds on a foundation of generously donated patient samples, where we test mechanisms of brain cancer growth, develop novel pre-clinical models that reliably recapitulate the human disease, and facilitate clinical trials of new treatments for patients with brain cancer.

    BioI am a neuroscientist and Principal Investigator of the Stanford Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) Lab in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences as well as Director of Neuroimaging for the Autism and Developmental Disorders Research Program at Stanford. My innovative research studies clinical aspects of cognitive and behavioral neuroscience, with a special focus on examining the neural circuitry associated with important brain-behavior relationships that may underlie different psychological and psychiatric domains in autistic children, adolescents, and adults. The ultimate goal of this research is to improve our understanding of the development of different cognitive and behavioral skills in order to develop mechanistically driven interventions that will improve precision medicine for mental health. Biologically based diagnosis and treatment are extremely limited for most psychological and psychiatric conditions but also critically needed to increase early identification and improve treatment outcomes, especially for neurodevelopmental disorders in which early intervention is the most beneficial. My early career research has primarily focused on clinical neuroscience using neuroimaging (e.g., MRI & EEG) to examine the effects of different drugs and behavioral interventions on the brain, especially for developing biomarkers for improving treatment planning and monitoring biological changes in response to single dose and clinical trials.

    My primary contributions to science thus far fall within these major categories: 1) identifying the neural correlates of individual differences in cognition and behavior, 2) developing new interventions and investigating the neurobiological substrates of response to treatment, 3) examining different factors that contribute to brain development, 4) summarizing and increasing accessibility to autism-related research, and 5) methods development for neuroimaging studies. My earliest research investigated the neurobiology of alexithymia, dyslexia, and stress using structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging to test theories of the mechanisms that contribute to differences in cognition and behavior. My subsequent dissertation research, in which I began to focus on neurodevelopmental disorders, examined the neural correlates of response to beta-blockers in autistic adults and also assessed the contribution of cerebellar circuits to the autism phenotype. During my postdoctoral training, I have developed further skills for working with children in multiple clinical research settings, especially for using advanced neuroimaging approaches to examine important brain-behavior relationships. This includes a recent K99/R00 from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NCT04278898 & NCT05664789) that will assess the neurobiology of restricted and repetitive behaviors in autistic children and examine the efficacy and target engagement of a novel nutritional supplement and investigational drug, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), in the brain. A key focus of my research is to apply novel methods and tools to large clinical datasets for hypothesis generation, comparative effectiveness research, and the evaluation of quality healthcare delivery. My research involves managing and manipulating big data, which range from administrative claims data to electronic health records, and applying novel biostatistical techniques to innovatively assess clinical and policy related research questions at the population level. This research enables us to create formal, statistically rigid, evaluations of healthcare data using unique combinations of large datasets.

    BioLynn Hildemann's current research areas include the sources and dispersion of airborne particulate matter indoors, and assessment of human exposure to air pollutants.

    Prof. Hildemann received BS, MS, and PhD degrees in environmental engineering science from the California Institute of Technology. She is an author on >100 peer-reviewed publications, including two with over 1000 citations each, and another 6 with over 500 citations each. She has been honored with Young Investigator Awards from NSF and ONR, the Kenneth T. Whitby Award from the AAAR (1998), and Stanford's Gores Award for Teaching Excellence (2013); she also was a co-recipient of Atmospheric Environment’s Haagen-Smit Outstanding Paper Award (2001).

    She has served on advisory committees for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and for the California Air Resources Board. She has been an Associate Editor for Environmental Science & Technology, and Aerosol Science and Technology, and has served on the advisory board for the journal Environmental Science & Technology.

    At Stanford, Prof. Hildemann has been chair of the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, and served as an elected member of the Faculty Senate. She has chaired the School of Engineering Library Committee, the University Committee on Judicial Affairs, and the University Breadth Governance Board.

    BioPaula J. Adams Hillard, M.D., is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford University School of Medicine where she serves as Associate Chair for Medical Student Education. She earned a B.S. in Zoology from the University of North Carolina and obtained her M.D. from Stanford University School of Medicine. She completed a residency in OB/Gyn at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She was on the faculty at the University of Virginia, and served as Professor in the Departments of OB/Gyn and Pediatrics at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital (CCHMC) /University of Cincinnati Medical Center for 23 years. At CCHMC she was the founder of a postgraduate fellowship training program in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. She currently directs the program in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford.

    She has been active on a number of national medical committees, including chair of the American College Obstetricians and Gynecologists' (ACOG) Committees on Patient Education, Adolescent Health, and Guidelines for Women’s Health; she is a past member of the Gynecologic Practice Committee, the Gynecology Document Review Committee, and the Ethics Committee. She was been an examiner for the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists from 1991-2015. She is a Board Member of the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics, and was elected a fellow of the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society. She is a past president of the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, and is an active contributor to the literature in adolescent gynecology and contraception with over 200 journal articles and abstracts published. She serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. She is the sole editor of two textbooks: the 5-Minute Consult in Obstetrics and Gynecology (2008) and Practical Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (2013). She is the author of over 120 book chapters on women’s health. She has been a consultant and a member of tasks forces and committees for the CDC, the U.S. FDA, the NICHD, the AMA, American Cancer Society, and ACOG. In addition to her work as a member of editorial boards and as an ad hoc reviewer for professional publications, Dr. Hillard has extensive experience with the consumer press. She was a contributing editor to Parents magazine from 1982-1990, writing a monthly column on pregnancy and birth--and currently acts as an editorial consultant to women’s publications such as Good Housekeeping, Family Circle, Woman’s Day, Cosmopolitan, Redbook, Glamour, YM, and Seventeen, as well as ABC News.     BioI'm a Cardiothoracic Surgery resident at Stanford Health Care. I also completed an intern year in Pediatrics resident at Boston Children’s Hospital before transitioning to cardiothoracic surgery. I received my MD from Harvard Medical School in the Health Sciences and Technology program joint with MIT. I trained as a biomedical engineering at the Johns Hopkins University with a focus in instrumentation.
    I've interests in medical devices spanning from assistive robotics, surgical devices, to point of care devices. I have extensive experience working in the electronics and coding aspect of device development.

    My long term goal is to become a congenital cardiovascular surgeon and improve the field of transplantation (partial and whole), congenital cardiac surgery techniques, and congenital mechanical circulatory support. This vocation comes from my personal experience receiving a heart transplant in 1999.

    BioDr. Hollenhorst is a physician and scientist with expertise in non-malignant hematology, transfusion medicine, and chemical biology. Dr. Hollenhorst values the one-on-one relationships that she forms with her patients, and strives to deliver the highest quality of care for individuals with blood diseases. Her experience caring for patients drives her to ask scientific questions in the laboratory, where she aims to bring a chemical approach to the study of non-malignant blood disease.

    Dr. Hollenhorst pursued combined MD and PhD training at Harvard University, where she received a PhD in Chemical Biology under the mentorship of Professor Christopher T Walsh. She subsequently completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, a fellowship in Transfusion Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and a fellowship in Hematology at Stanford.

    Dr. Hollenhorst has an interest in the biology of platelets, which are cellular fragments that help the blood to maintain a healthy balance between bleeding and clotting. Working in the laboratory of Professor Carolyn Bertozzi of Stanford Chemistry, Dr. Hollenhorst is studying sugar molecules found on the surface of platelets that are important in controlling their function and lifespan.

    Dr. Hollenhorst's research is supported by an NIH K99 Career Pathway to Independence in Blood Science Award for Physician-Scientists, a Stanford Chemistry, Engineering & Medicine for Human Health Physician-Scientist Fellowship, and a National Blood Foundation Early-Career Scientific Research Grant.

    BioDr. Hong specializes in the treatment of pediatric patients with neurosurgical conditions, with additional specialty training in the treatment of pediatric spinal disorders, including scoliosis. He completed his residency in his home state of Michigan at the Detroit Medical Center, and completed fellowship training at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, before becoming a part of Stanford Children's Health.

    His clinical interests include brain tumors, epilepsy surgery, idiopathic scoliosis, Chiari malformation, vascular conditions, concussion, and will treat all other conditions within the specialty.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Hong is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and clinician-scientist. His responsibilities span clinical care, teaching/mentorship, and research, with a unifying theme of advancing a developmental cognitive framework as applied to psychiatric conditions. Using this core premise, he work encompasses multiple domains: specialized clinical care, fellowship training, research mentorship, and elaborating the role of sex-specific determinants of development, one of the greatest contributors to individual developmental variation.

    His lab investigates genetic and hormonal influences underlying sex differences in child psychiatric conditions. Sex has emerged as a critical variable driving differences in the phenomenology, course, and treatment of many mental health disorders. Unfortunately, an understanding of the biological mechanisms driving these effects are limited. By applying innovative neuroimaging and multiomic approaches, Dr. Hong seeks to provide a deeper understanding of the connection between sex-specific effects and complex psychiatric diseases. To do so, research in the Hong Lab focuses on the role of genes on the X and Y chromosomes, as well as circulating sex hormones on brain development, cognition, and behavior. The lab broadly aims to elucidate the changing nature of these mechanisms across various stages of development.

    Another area of focus is the implementation of clinical informatics in child psychiatry and the development of digital mental health tools. As co-Director of the Mental Health Technology and Innovation Hub, Dr. Hong is helping to develop clinical and research infrastructure within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences to advance development of mobile mental health resources that will improve efficacy and access to mental health care.

    BioKorey Hood, PhD is personally and professionally committed to improving the lives of people with diabetes. As Professor and Staff Psychologist at Stanford University School of Medicine, Dr. Hood runs a behavioral science laboratory aimed at optimizing health and quality of life outcomes. A recipient of federal and foundation grants and author of over 200 scientific articles, Dr. Hood works to put behavioral science at the forefront of patient-centered diabetes care. Dr. Hood has type 1 diabetes himself and works across advocacy and service settings to promote awareness of diabetes treatments, the psychological impact, and emerging technologies. Dr. Hood is a compassionate behavioral scientist with a keen understanding of the intersection between diabetes and behavioral health.

    BioDr. Hori received his MD from Sapporo Medical University, Japan, and during that time he served as a Medical Student Research Fellow in the Department of Pharmacology. He explored the functional role of the SIRT1 gene, a longevity-associated gene, and its association with various conditions such as muscular dystrophy. He also completed a Visiting Student Research Fellowship at the Health Sciences University of Hokkaido and participated in Human Genetics projects focusing on an association between the 27-bp deletion and 538G>A mutation in the ABCC11 Gene.

    After graduating from medical school, Dr. Hori completed a neurosurgery residency at National Hospital Organization Okayama Medical Center in Japan. Subsequently, he completed a Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery Fellowship and then a Neurosurgical Oncology and Radiosurgery Fellowship at The Cleveland Clinic. He also completed an International Neurosurgery Fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School. In 2022, he moved to Stanford University as a postdoctoral fellow, and under the supervision of Dr. Anca Pasca, he participated in brain organoid research focusing on hypoxic brain injuries.

    Since July 2023, Dr. Hori has been working as a Clinical Instructor (Neurosurgical Oncology and Radiosurgery) in the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford under the supervision of Dr. Steven D. Chang. His clinical interests include malignant brain and spine tumors in both adult and pediatric patients. His clinical research focuses on the application of minimally invasive treatments such as laser interstitial thermal therapy, focused ultrasound, and radiosurgery to treat various neurosurgical conditions. His current lab research aims to develop an organoid model for radiation-induced brain injuries and a high-throughput screening platform to identify novel therapeutic compounds, for which he received a Clinician Educator Grant from Stanford University Maternal and Child Health Research Institute. Outside of medicine, he enjoys playing music including guitar and drums.

    BioDr. Horomanski specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatologic diseases. She received her undergraduate degree from Case Western Reserve University, medical degree from Wright State University, and completed her Internal Medicine residency and Rheumatology fellowship at Stanford University. She is the Director of the Stanford Vasculitis Clinic where she manages the complex care of patients with all types of vasculitis and works closely with partners in related specialties. She has a specific interest in clinical trials and a Graduate Certificate in Epidemiology and Clinical Research. Dr. Horomanski also received training in musculoskeletal ultrasound from the USSONAR program and is an integral part of Stanford's Diagnostic and Interventional Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Clinic. Additional areas of research include the application of ultrasound in the study and management of rheumatologic diseases.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur lab’s research portfolio crosses multiple disciplines including computational neuropsychiatry, cognitive neuroscience, multimodal neuroimaging and neurocognitive rehabilitation. Our computational neuropsychiatry research mainly involves investigating alterations in the organization of connectome in various neurodevelopmental and neurocognitive disorders using state of the art neuroimaging techniques (fMRI, sMRI, DWI, functional NIRS) combined with novel computational methods (graph theoretical and multivariate pattern analyses).

    The ultimate goal of our research is to translate the findings from computational neuropsychiatry research toward developing personalized interventions. We have been developing personalized interventions that integrate computerized cognitive rehabilitation, real-time functional brain imaging and neurofeedback, as well as virtual reality (VR) tailored toward targeted rehabilitation of the affected brain networks in patients with neurocognitive disorders.

    BioDr. Kristene Hossepian is a licensed clinical psychologist with expertise in anxiety, depression, eating disorders, parent management training, and stress. During her doctorate training at the PGSP-Stanford Psy.D. Consortium she received extensive training in a number of evidence-based treatment approaches for children and adolescents, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital/Children’s Health Council where she worked with youth struggling with severe eating disorders, chronic medical conditions, trauma, depression, and anxiety. After receiving her doctorate in 2020, Dr. Hossepian completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the Stanford University School of Medicine, where she continued to receive training in evidence-based treatments for youth with a variety of presenting problems at the inpatient and outpatient level.

    Currently, Dr. Hossepian is a Clinical Assistant Professor within the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Stanford University School of Medicine. She works alongside Dr. Mary Sanders and Dr. Jennifer Derenne at the Comprehensive Care Program serving children and adolescents who are medically compromised due to complications with their eating disorders. Additionally, Dr. Hossepian works within Dr. Victoria Cosgrove’s Stress, Resilience, Emotion, and Mood (StREam) Laboratory to identify the ways that psychobiological stress responsivity is implicated in the emergence and propagation of affective symptomatology. Dr. Hossepian is interested in exploring the physiological mechanisms underlying mood disorders and eating disorders as well as providing children and adolescents with novel emotion regulation strategies.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur lab is broadly interested in how intestinal microbes shape our immune system to promote both health and disease. Recently we discovered that a type of intestinal epithelial cell, called tuft cells, act as sentinels stationed along the lining of the gut. Tuft cells respond to microbes, including parasites, to initiate type 2 immunity, remodel the epithelium, and alter gut physiology. Surprisingly, these changes to the intestine rely on the same chemosensory pathway found in oral taste cells. Currently, we aim to 1) elucidate the role of specific tuft cell receptors in microbial detection. 2) To understand how protozoa and bacteria within the microbiota impact host immunity. 3) Discover how tuft cells modulate surrounding cells and tissue.

    BioAlyssa Howren is a Postdoctoral Scholar at Stanford University’s Department of Epidemiology and Population Health in the School of Medicine. She completed her MSc and PhD training at the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences during which she was a trainee at Arthritis Research Canada. Her PhD training was supported by a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Doctoral Award, along with UBC’s Wayne Riggs Interdisciplinary Scholarship in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Andrew Nord Fellowship in Rheumatology. Her research focuses on using multiple data sources to provide evidence to disentangle the complex relationship between depression and anxiety with inflammatory arthritis and assess how people living with inflammatory arthritis are treated for their comorbid mental disorders. Methodological approaches in Dr. Howren’s work have included systematic reviews, qualitative research, mixed methods, and population-based studies using linked administrative health databases. She was awarded a CIHR Fellowship for her postdoctoral research at Stanford University which aims to evaluate whether biases in clinical decision-making contribute to the sex and gender differences observed in the diagnosis of major depressive disorder.

    BioDr. Michelle Huffaker is a board-certified, fellowship-trained allergist and immunologist with Stanford Health Care. She is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Huffaker specializes in diagnosing and treating allergies and health conditions that affect the immune system. She is particularly interested in asthma, food allergies, and allergic rhinitis.

    Dr. Huffaker’s research is focused on treatments that achieve long-lasting remission for allergic and immunologic diseases, such as food allergies and allergic rhinitis. Dr. Huffaker is the director of clinical and translational medicine for the allergy portfolio of the Immune Tolerance Network (ITN), a clinical research consortium funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The ITN focuses on achieving immune tolerance in conditions where the body attacks healthy cells (immune-mediated diseases). Dr. Huffaker leads the development, conduct, and analysis of ITN clinical trials.

    Dr. Huffaker has published her research in peer-reviewed journals, such as Allergy, The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, and World Allergy Organization Journal. She has presented to her peers at international, national, and regional meetings, including those of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI), and the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI).

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe are interested in the neuronal mechanisms that underlie synchronous oscillatory activity in the thalamus, cortex and the massively interconnected thalamocortical system. Such oscillations are related to cognitive processes, normal sleep activities and certain forms of epilepsy. Our approach is an analysis of the discrete components (cells, synapses, microcircuits) that make up thalamic and cortical circuits, and reconstitution of components into in silico computational networks.

    BioWouter received his training at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. Here he obtained a B.Sc.and M.Sc. in Human Movement Sciences (2008-2015), followed by a M.Sc. in Clinical and Molecular Neurosciences (2014-2016). He performed his doctoral research at the University of Groningen, obtaining his PhD degree in Molecular Cell Biology in 2021. Wouter continued his research in 2022 with a position as postdoctoral scholar at the Jarosz lab, at the department of Chemical and Systems Biology. Here he pursues his interest in the molecular forces underlying proteomic adaptation of cells and systems in development and disease. Outside of Stanford, Wouter is an avid sportsman, and likes cooking, hiking, birding, and in general loves to enjoy nature and wildlife with his wife and son.

    BioAs a cell biologist interested in neuroscience, I am fascinated about the molecular basis of nervous system disorders that reveal therapeutic targets and/or biomarkers. My long-term research goal is to identify strategies that revert dysregulation in aging or neurodegeneration. For my postdoctoral training in the Zuchero lab (Neurosurgery), I will investigate how myelination, an essential developmental process, contributes to intelligence and neurodegeneration at the biochemical, cellular, and physiological level. I received my BSc at UCLA and my PhD at Duke University.

    BioIrogue Igbinosa, MD, MS, is a Maternal-Fetal Medicine physician at Stanford University. Her research focus includes iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy, severe maternal morbidity and mortality, and health equity. She is a NIH Women's Reproductive Health Scholar (K12) and recently, she was also recognized as the Duan Family Faculty Scholar in Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

    She graduated from the University of Houston and earned her medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine. She subsequently completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency at Louisiana State University School of Medicine Baton Rouge. After residency, she was an AAMC-CDC Public Health Policy Fellow able to serve in the CDC Emergency Operations Center and contribute to research for healthcare providers regarding the management of the Zika virus in pregnant persons. She completed her Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship at Stanford in 2022.

    Dr. Igbinosa is passionate about community-engaged approaches to bridge gaps in evidence-based care for birthing communities and collaborates with local and national policy committees to raise awareness for reproductive justice in maternal health. In 2023, 2he was awarded the inaugural Maternal Health Implementation Science Physician Research Scholar with AMETHIST @Penn (Achieving Maternal Empowerment and Transforming Health at University of Pennsylvania) and applies to the principles learned to many aspects of her ongoing research. Her current research endeavors include co-investigator for Stanford's PHRISM: preventing inequities in hemorrhage related severe maternal morbidity, primary investigator for NOURISH - prenatal nutrition education for community health workers and doulas, as well as several hospital quality initiative efforts to improve the screening, management, and treatment of iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy. Her motto is to listen first and serve with compassion.

Some evidence-based drug therapies, including β-blockers, ivabradine, and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone antagonists are difficult to apply to critical patients due to adverse side effects. Drugs that have shown efficacy in basic animal experiments have failed to show significant benefits in clinical trials. To address these problems, he moved to academia to conduct translational research. During his graduate training in the Egashira Lab, he focused on drug delivery systems (DDS) that target mitochondria in animal models of MI. He obtained advanced skills in molecular biology, mitochondrial bioenergetics, and animal surgery. He realized the importance of translational research and the great potential of DDS to overcome many clinical problems. He developed nanoparticle-mediated DDS containing cyclosporine for the treatment of patients with MI. He published a first-author paper and received academic awards for his novel science. Since becoming a postdoctoral fellow in the Yang Lab, he has continued to build upon his previous training in translational research. He is currently developing an innovative therapy, namely, extracellular vesicles-mediated mitochondrial transfer for mitochondria-related diseases such as heart failure and mitochondrial disease.

    BioAmy Inkster, PhD is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health at Stanford University. She conducts research on epigenetic alterations in pregnancy and early life to understand the molecular levers affecting healthy development. She primarily uses large 'omics datasets to study the effect of environmental exposures on pregnancy outcomes and maternal health.

    Dr. Inkster received her PhD in Medical Genetics from the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada), where her research focused on evaluating DNA methylation variation in prenatal life, primarily in the context of placental epigenetics, sex differences, prenatal exposures, and X-chromosome inactivation. She holds a BSc in Chemistry. As a cross-disciplinary researcher, her work and research interests lie at the intersection of molecular mechanisms and their impacts on human health and disease at the population level.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe study innate immunity and immune regulation of Plasmodium Falciparum malaria in children and pregnant women. Our work focuses on understanding how malaria shapes the immune state in individuals following repeated exposure. We are also testing novel interventions to enhance protective immunity against malaria in children via large, randomized controlled trials. Our work in malaria has been based in Eastern Uganda, where malaria transmission is among the highest in the world.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsClinical interests include autonomic disorders, small fiber neuropathies and the development of effective methods of testing and treating these disorders. Prior work has focused on small fiber painful and autonomic neuropathies; syndromes of orthostatic intolerance and syncope; gastrointestinal motility dysfunction; cyclic vomiting; protacted Gastroesophageal Reflux; non-allergic rhinitis syndromes; and the relationship between the autonomic nervous system and normal or abnormal sleep. Additional areas of interest include the neurology of phonation and swallowing disorders, and peripheral nerve injury and repair.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy laboratory studies conformational switches in evolution, disease, and development. Ultimately we seek to understand how homeostatic mechanisms influence the acquisition of biological novelty and identify means of manipulating them for therapeutic and biosynthetic benefit.

Dr. Jayapal's primary practice is based at 450 Broadway Pavilion B in Redwood City, where he is dedicated to serving the underserved community through the Conrad 30 program. His academic interests center on developing fast MRI techniques to improve access to high-quality imaging, especially in resource-limited settings.

    BioDr. Susy Jeng is Clinical Associate Professor of Neurology at Stanford Children’s Hospital at Stanford University. Dr. Jeng received her A.B. at Harvard College and M.D. at the University of California, San Diego. She completed her pediatrics residency at University of California, San Francisco and is board-certified in pediatrics. After practicing general pediatrics for two years, she returned to UCSF for neurology residency. Upon completion of her residencies, she joined the faculty at Stanford as a general child neurologist with a special interest in medical education. She is the site director for the Stanford medical student neurology clerkship and the pediatric neurology liaison to the Stanford pediatrics residency program.

    BioBronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a common and severe complication of very preterm birth. Dr. Jensen’s research seeks to improve the long-term respiratory health of premature infants through: (1) clinical and translational studies that aim to develop evidence-based strategies to prevent and treat BPD; (2) novel characterization of disease severity and phenotypes in BPD; and (3) application of health services research techniques to investigate the association between hospital-level factors and neonatal morbidity and mortality.

    Dr. Jensen’s research is supported by grant funding from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and the American Lung Association (ALA). He is a member of the International BPD Collaborative and the International Neonatal Consortium (INC) BPD working group.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am a clinical associate professor of pediatric gastroenterology and the Inaugural Medical Director of the Celiac Disease Program at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford whose clinical practice and research have an emphasis on the diagnosis and management of celiac disease. I was appointed the Director of Pediatric Clinical Research at the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center in 2014. I am deeply involved in both local community and national professional societies serving as the Director of the Chicagoland Children’s Health Alliance (CCHA) endoscopy committee and am a member of the CCHA celiac committee, the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) celiac special interest group, CeliacKids (a pediatric multi-center celiac research focused collaborative), the Standards-Based Active Guideline Environment (a committee responsible for the establishment of guidelines for accommodating children with celiac disease within school settings across the United States), and the NASPGHAN Endoscopy committee. My clinical work and research focus on pediatric celiac disease (CeD) and have resulted in numerous publications, peer-reviewed articles, and book chapters. This research has also helped to establish myself as an expert in the field of pediatric celiac disease leading to invitations to speak and be a moderator at both local and national meetings, including the internationally attended University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center educational preceptorship programs, the NASPGHAN annual meeting and Beyond Celiac. I have additionally been called up to provide celiac specific journal reviews as well as expert opinions to leading publications, including US News and World Report, Reader’s Digest and Reuter’s. The current application builds logically on my prior work in the field of pediatric celiac disease for which I have successfully administered the projects (staffing, research coordination, budgeting, data analysis and manuscript creation). In summary, I have the expertise, leadership, training, and motivation necessary to successfully carry out the proposed research projects.

    Dr Jethwa previously worked as a resident anesthesiologist in the UK for 7 years including rotations in Internal Medicine, Obstetrics, and Pain Medicine and completed a Masters in Education at the University of Pennsylvania focused on medical education.

    BioTomás Jiménez is the Joan B. Ford Professor in the department of Sociology and Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity, and founding co-director of Stanford's Institute for Advancing Just Societies. He is also the director of the Qualitative Initiative in the Immigration Policy Lab. His research and writing focus on immigration, policy, assimilation, social mobility, and ethnic and racial identity. His latest book, States of Belonging: Immigration Policies, Attitudes, and Inclusion (Russell Sage Foundation Press) (with Deborah Schildkraut, Yuen Ho, and John Dovidio) uses survey data (with an embedded experiment) and in-depth interviews to understand how state-level immigration policies shape belonging among Latino immigrants, US-born Latinos, and US-born whites in Arizona and New Mexico. The American Sociological Association’s Population Section selected the book for its Otis Dudley Duncan Distinguished Book Award. His second book, The Other Side of Assimilation: How Immigrants are Changing American Life (University of California Press, 2017), uses interviews from a race and class spectrum of Silicon Valley residents to show how a relational form of assimilation changes both newcomers (immigrants and their children) and established individuals (people born in the US to US-born parents). His first book, Replenished Ethnicity: Mexican Americans, Immigration, and Identity(University of California Press, 2010), draws on interviews and participant observation to understand how uninterrupted Mexican immigration influences the ethnic identity of later-generation Mexican Americans. Professor Jiménez has also published his research in Science, American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, American Political Science Review, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Social Problems, International Migration Review, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Social Science Quarterly, DuBois Review, Social Currents, Qualitative Sociology, and the Annual Review of Sociology.

    Professor Jiménez also researches immigration policy with Stanford's Immigration Policy Lab, directing the Lab's Qualitative Initiative to integrate qualitative and quantitative approaches in research to have policy impact. Current projects examine naturalization, refugee resettlement (with Pei Palmgren), and health and language access.

    In other lines of research, Professor Jiménez and Sofia Avila examine how immigration becomes part of American national identity by studying a sample of high school US history textbooks from 1930-2007. This research employs hand-coding and computer-assisted text analysis of the textbook sample.

    Professor Jiménez has taught at the University of California, San Diego. He was the Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer (2017-19). He has also been an Irvine Fellow at the New America Foundation and a Sage Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University (CASBS). He was the American Sociological Association Congressional Fellow in the office of US Rep. Michael Honda, where he served as a legislative aide for immigration, veterans’ affairs, housing, and election reform. His writing on policy has appeared in reports for the Immigration Policy Center and the Migration Policy Institute. He has written editorials on immigration in several major news outlets, including The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, CNN.com, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Hill, and the San Diego Union-Tribune. He has also offered commentary for media outlets, including NBC News, National Public Radio, and Univision.
