Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI’m interested in understanding parathyroid hormone (PTH) signaling and its role in bone remodeling and the bone marrow microenvironment during critical growth periods. My research investigates how PTH influences osteoblast function and interacts with other signaling pathways. Using advanced single-cell sequencing and multi-omics approaches, I aim to uncover cellular and molecular pathways influenced by PTH, elucidate pediatric bone disorders, and identify potential therapeutic targets.

Benedikt joined the Amieva Lab from Germany in 2022. During his B.Sc. and M.Sc. programs in zoology, he became fascinated with 3D imaging approaches to study small animal microanatomy. He spent his PhD developing in situ imaging approaches to study deep-sea symbioses and fell in love with studying host-microbe interactions. In the Amieva Lab, Benedikt will advance his previously developed correlative chemical imaging techniques to resolve metabolic and cellular interactions that drive H. pylori pathogenesis in the gastric glands. -

BioEli received his B.S. in Microbiology and Immunology from U.C. Irvine in 2013, where he worked in the lab of Dr. Celia Goulding. He earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 2018 in the lab of Dr. Sarah Fortune, where he studied post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Eli joined the Howitt lab at Stanford in the summer of 2018, where he is studying the influence of protozoan members of the microbiome on intestinal immunity.

Her research focuses on geopolitical coercion and global maternal child health. Prior to her return to academia, she spent a decade working in global health in countries such as Madagascar, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and Ecuador.

Joshua Gillard

BioDr. Josh Gillard is a Canadian biomedical data scientist with experience in bioinformatics, machine learning, and immunology. After completing a BSc and a MSc in Experimental Medicine at McGill university, he relocated to the Netherlands for his PhD at Radboud University in Nijmegen. During his PhD, he gained experience analyzing and interpreting complex immunological data (bulk and single-cell transcriptomics, high-dimensional cytometry, proteomics data) derived from human observational or intervention studies (vaccination and experimental human infection) in order to discover molecular and cellular correlates of clinically important endpoints such as disease severity, symptom progression, and antibody responses. In 2022, Josh relocated to Stanford to join the Gaudilliere lab to develop and apply multi-omic data integration and machine learning techniques, establishing that early gestational immune dysregulation can predict preterm birth. Since 2024, in the Ashley lab, Josh is focused on the use of deep learning and transformer models to identify novel splice isoforms of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy using whole genome sequencing data.

She is a 2023 Forbes 30 Under 30 Honoree in the Science category, 2022 NVIDIA Graduate Fellow, and 2021 Cadence Women in Technology Scholar. She has a B.Tech. and M.Tech. (Microelectronics) in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay where she received the Akshay Dhoke Memorial Award for the most outstanding student in the program.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe increasing availability of very large datasets, along with recent advances in deep learning based tools for automatic extraction of cardiac traits, has led to the discovery of further common variants associated with cardiac disease. However, the genetic underpinnings of valvular heart disease remains understudied. I am interested in developing deep learning techniques to automatically extract cardiac flow information to facilitate genome-wide association studies of cardiac flow traits.

BioCamila González is a postdoctoral scholar at the Computational Neuroscience Laboratory at Stanford University, where she develops continual learning methods suitable for dynamic settings with ongoing data collection. Her work has received multiple distinctions, including the MICCAI Young Scientist Award, the Francois Erbsmann Award at the Information Processing in Medical Imaging (IPMI) conference, and the Bildverarbeitung für die Medizin (BVM) award. She has been featured in outlets such as the Computer Vision News magazine and the AI-Ready Healthcare podcast. Outside her research, she presided over the MICCAI student board for two years and acted as Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) chair for ContinualAI. Last year, she co-organized the first MICCAI tutorial on Dynamic AI in the Clinical Open World (DAICOW), which will have its second edition in MICCAI 2024.

I completed medical school at the UC Berkeley - UCSF Joint Medical Program, followed by the Combined Internal Medicine/Anesthesiology Residency at the Stanford School of Medicine. -
Tal Gordon

BioI am a zoologist and molecular biologist interested in the molecular basis of regeneration. My research focuses on stem cells and regeneration in ascidians, a group of marine invertebrates that represent the closest living relatives of the vertebrates. One of the main questions that motivate my research is whether regeneration capabilities lost during evolution can, at least to some extent, be re-acquired. As regeneration is not universal in the animal kingdom, I hypothesize that comparing regeneration in species with distinct regenerative capacities will lead to the discovery of key components of regeneration.
During my postdoc I intend to use comparative genomics to identify conserved cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie ascidians’ regeneration. -
Jessica Grembi

BioEnvironmental enteric dysfunction (EED) affects 50-90% of children in low-income countries and is likely an important factor in child stunting as it impedes efficient nutrient uptake in the small intestine. EED is suspected to be the result of persistent exposure to enteric pathogens, although it has not been correlated with any specific pathogen. My research explores the interplay of gut microbiota, including enteric pathogens, and the host immune system with a focus on understanding EED so we can rationally design treatments and preventive measures.

François Grolleau

BioFrançois Grolleau MD, MPH, PhD is a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Stanford Center for Biomedical Informatics Research. His research work centers on developing and evaluating computational systems that use retrieval-augmented language models and other advanced methods from statistics and machine learning to assist medical decision-making.
François is a certified Anesthesiologist and Critical Care Medicine specialist from France. He holds an MPH degree and a PhD in Biostatistics from Paris Cité University. In 2016/2017, he worked as a research fellow in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact at McMaster University, Canada (Profs Yannick Le Manach and Gordon Guyatt). During his doctorate with Prof. Raphaël Porcher, he utilized causal inference, personalized medicine methods, and statistical reinforcement learning for medical applications in the ICU. -

Praveen Gurunath Bharathi

BioPraveen joined the Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, Department of Radiology as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow where he will be working on predictive and real-time PET image quality monitoring using Machine learning. Previously, he worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Manchester, UK where he developed an inexpensive imaging & automated analysis system to support early diagnosis of Systemic Sclerosis. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani. His Ph.D. research was focused on developing an automated intelligent decision support system for multiple brain disorder diagnosis from MRI scans. His research is mainly in the interdisciplinary field of deep learning and medical image analysis. In particular the application of deep learning models to improve disease prognosis. He completed his Master's in Biomedical Signal Processing & Instrumentation from RV College of Engineering, India. During his master's he worked as a project intern in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc, Bangalore) where he worked on the application of 3D digital image correlation to perform strain analysis on the human body during various physical activities.

Richard Haarburger

BioRichard Haarburger is a postdoctoral scholar in general medicine with a background in economics. During his PhD, he worked on addressing measurement biases and data gaps, handling high-dimensional data, and quantifying the implications of heterogeneous technology adoption. During his time as a scientific trainee at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, he conducted policy research on Europe's competitiveness in industrial automation technologies and the increasing adoption of AI in manufacturing.
At Stanford, he applies causal inference methods to research questions in population health and epidemiology. His research interests include impact evaluation methods, causal machine learning, and the impact of AI on healthcare and the economy. -
Jen Haensel

BioI am a Research Scientist in the Roberts Vision Development & Oculomotor Lab at Stanford University’s Department of Ophthalmology, working at the intersection of vision science, neuroscience, and experimental psychology. My current research uses eye-tracking, photorefraction, and psychophysics to study oculomotor development and visual function in amblyopia, strabismus, and concussion. I also work on developing methodology to record accommodative measurements and gaze behaviour in dynamic, naturalistic settings.
I completed my PhD in Experimental Psychology at Birkbeck, University of London (UK), where I used advanced eye-tracking techniques to study the influence of postnatal experience on social gaze behaviour. Prior to joining Stanford, I also worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bath (UK), developing empirical human-robot interaction studies to inform the ethical design of humanoid robots. -
Maximilian Haist

BioDr. Haist is a clinician scientist who explores the tumor microenvironment of advanced skin cancer patients to identify predictive biomarkers and immunological signatures using single-cell multiplexing technologies. As a Ph.D. student, Dr. Haist investigated the role of tumor hypoxia and the adenosine system in patients with melanoma brain metastases treated with combined radiochemotherapy. Currently, Dr Haist is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Dr. Garry Nolan´s lab and comes with interest in multiplex technologies to analyze the organization of effective anti-tumor immune responses within the tumor microenvironment.

Aubrey Hargrave

BioMy research interests are centered on ocular immunology and neuroinflammation. My long-standing interest in eye research stems from personal experience with eye disease, which has led me to explore vision research and underlies my passion for disease-centric research in order to improve quality of life for patients.
I am fascinated by the immune response and inflammation, in part because of its broad applicability to many human diseases. To this end, I am interested in developing an understanding of the interplay between the immune and nervous systems in the ocular microenvironment and my past research has allowed me to explore this interplay within diverse areas of the eye. As an undergraduate, I conducted research with Dr. Rima Mcleod to study patients with toxoplasmosis, a disease affecting both ocular and neural tissue. We created a patient database and investigated whether genotype influences the inflammatory response to the t.gondii parasite. As a predoctoral student with Dr. Alan Burns, my research focused on ocular inflammation in two cases; first, in acute inflammation following a corneal abrasion and second, in the context of systemic inflammation caused by early metabolic syndrome. I analyzed the immune response in both cases and developed methods to determine the effect on corneal nerves.
During my postdoctoral training with Dr. Alfredo Dubra, I am continuing to build on my previous training in vision science, inflammation, and neurodegeneration by using adaptive optics imaging, in conjunction with standard clinical measurements, to explore potential biomarkers in diseases such as multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, and retinal degeneration. With high-resolution in vivo adaptive optics imaging we are able to monitor changes in retinal tissues at the cellular level over time, as well as to observe minute changes in the retina with treatment during clinical trials. -

BioHoda S. Hashemi is a postdoctoral scholar at the Ultrasound Imaging & Instrumentation Lab at Stanford University. She received her PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2023. She was also an ultrasound research intern in research and innovation team at DarkVision Technologies Inc. from 2021 to 2023. She holds a M.A.Sc. from Concordia University and a B.Sc. from Sharif University of Technology. Her research interests are ultrasound molecular imaging, doppler imaging, elastography and deep learning. Her research has been funded by the NIH T32 Fellowship at Stanford, the Canadian NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship, and the Ultrasound Imaging & Instrumentation Lab at Stanford University.

Muhammad Murtaza Hassan

BioMurtaza is a chemical biologist that joined the Gray Lab in July 2021 as a postdoctoral researcher. He developed his love for medicinal chemistry and chemical biology at the undergraduate level at the University of Toronto Mississauga which then motivated him to pursue an MSc (York University, Supervisor: Prof. Edward Lee-Ruff, 2017) and PhD (University of Toronto Mississauga, Supervisor: Patrick T. Gunning, 2021) in the field. His PhD work involved the development of some of the most potent and selective HDAC8 inhibitors known-to-date. It incorporated inhibitors with L-shaped conformational constraints to compliment the L-shaped HDAC8 pocket. His current work at the Gray Lab revolves around the development of first-in-class covalent inhibitors for recently discovered epigenetic targets that have been shown to synergize with anticancer immunotherapy. Additionally, he is interested in developing small-molecule chemoproteomic tools that can potentially expand our ability to target otherwise undruggable proteins, by using protein-protein interactions for cross-labelling/drugging interacting proteins.

Cellas Ari'ka Hayes

BioCellas is currently a postdoctoral fellow/Propel scholar at Stanford University in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences in a laboratory utilizing longitudinal data analysis and neuroimaging modalities to understand the aging brain, neuropathology, cognition, and Alzheimer’s Disease. Postdoctoral experience includes using R, Linux, and Python to perform data preprocessing, multivariate statistical analysis, and applying novel models for longitudinal continuous outcomes. Cellas received his Bachelor’s in Biology (2015-2019) and Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmaceutical Sciences with an emphasis in Pharmacology (2019-2022) from the University of Mississippi. As a doctoral candidate, his research focused on using both in vitro and in vivo approaches to further elucidate how neuroendocrine modulation specifically insulin-like growth factor-1 alters learning and memory performance along with ischemic stroke outcomes. Skills gained during doctoral training included in vitro cell culture, pharmacological experimental design of both in vitro and in vivo studies, development of transgenic mouse models, a wide array of rodent behavioral paradigms, stereotaxic surgery, photothrombosis, and numerous ex vivo cellular, molecular, and microscopy techniques.
My primary interests lie at the intersection of aging, neurodegenerative disease, and using longitudinal epidemiological data sets to investigate hypotheses. All around neuroscientist seeking sci-comm, industry, and academic opportunities to strengthen skills to become an independent investigator.
