Alyssa Michelle Howren
Postdoctoral Scholar, Epidemiology
BioAlyssa Howren is a Postdoctoral Scholar at Stanford University’s Department of Epidemiology and Population Health in the School of Medicine. She completed her MSc and PhD training at the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences during which she was a trainee at Arthritis Research Canada. Her PhD training was supported by a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Doctoral Award, along with UBC’s Wayne Riggs Interdisciplinary Scholarship in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Andrew Nord Fellowship in Rheumatology. Her research focuses on using multiple data sources to provide evidence to disentangle the complex relationship between depression and anxiety with inflammatory arthritis and assess how people living with inflammatory arthritis are treated for their comorbid mental disorders. Methodological approaches in Dr. Howren’s work have included systematic reviews, qualitative research, mixed methods, and population-based studies using linked administrative health databases. She was awarded a CIHR Fellowship for her postdoctoral research at Stanford University which aims to evaluate whether biases in clinical decision-making contribute to the sex and gender differences observed in the diagnosis of major depressive disorder.

Chia-Hsin Hsu

BioDr. Chia-Hsin (Cindy) Hsu is a postdoctoral scholar in Dr. Deshka Foster's laboratory in the Department of General Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine. She received her Ph.D. in Biomedical and Biological Sciences from Cornell University under Dr. Andrew White, where she studied how extracellular matrix remodeling and innate immune crosstalk shape tumor response to targeted therapy in BRAF-mutant melanoma. She previously earned her D.V.M. and M.S. in Veterinary Medicine from National Taiwan University. Dr. Hsu's current research focuses on two projects: developing a sustained-release hydrogel platform for localized JUN inhibition to prevent postoperative intra-abdominal adhesions, a leading cause of bowel obstruction and reoperative morbidity; and investigating stromal–tertiary lymphoid structure (TLS) crosstalk in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma to define how the tumor microenvironment shapes anti-tumor immunity.

Jiaqi Hu

BioJiaqi Hu is a Postdoctoral Scholar at Stanford University, supervised by Drs. Tim Assimes and Shoa Clarke. She received her PhD in Chronic Disease Epidemiology from the Yale School of Public Health in 2026 and her Bachelor of Arts degree from Peking University in 2021. Rongting Huang

BioDr. Huang is a computational biologist with academic interests in cancer genomics and spatial biology, particularly in the field of gynecologic cancers. During her Ph.D. under the mentorship of Dr. Yuanhua Huang, she developed statistical methods to detect allele-specific somatic copy number variations from single-cell and spatial transcriptomic data, aiming to understand genetic diversity in biological systems. Currently, her research focuses on advancing gynecologic cancer studies and women’s health through spatial technology platforms, computational modeling, and innovative data visualizations to uncover meaningful insights.
Outside of research, she enjoys hiking, rock climbing, and calligraphy, which help her stay creative and balanced. -
Wouter Huiting
Postdoctoral Scholar, Chemical and Systems Biology
BioWouter received his training at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. Here he obtained a B.Sc.and M.Sc. in Human Movement Sciences (2008-2015), followed by a M.Sc. in Clinical and Molecular Neurosciences (2014-2016). He performed his doctoral research at the University of Groningen, obtaining his PhD degree in Molecular Cell Biology in 2021. Wouter continued his research in 2022 with a position as postdoctoral scholar at the Jarosz lab, at the department of Chemical and Systems Biology. Here he pursues his interest in the molecular forces underlying proteomic adaptation of cells and systems in development and disease. Outside of Stanford, Wouter is an avid sportsman, and likes cooking, hiking, birding, and in general loves to enjoy nature and wildlife with his wife and son.

Elima Hussain

BioDr. Elima is working with GE Healthcare on developing rapid dual-contrast PET/MRI protocols for staging and assessment of rectal cancer. She is also working on development of AI based segmentation models for muscle and fat separation using pelvic MRI images in pelvic floor disorder patients. This project is undergoing in collaboration with Stanford AIMI center and AWS cloud computation support. Her research interests include translation of quantitative MRI and PET/MRI, radiomics, machine learning for predicting treatment response in rectal cancer, gynecologic malignancies, and inflammatory bowel diseases.

BioAs a cell biologist interested in neuroscience, I am fascinated about the molecular basis of nervous system disorders that reveal therapeutic targets and/or biomarkers. My long-term research goal is to identify strategies that revert dysregulation in aging or neurodegeneration. For my postdoctoral training in the Zuchero lab (Neurosurgery), I will investigate how myelination, an essential developmental process, contributes to intelligence and neurodegeneration at the biochemical, cellular, and physiological level. I received my BSc at UCLA and my PhD at Duke University.

Amy M Inkster

BioAmy Inkster, PhD is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health at Stanford University. She conducts research on epigenetic alterations in pregnancy and early life to understand the molecular levers affecting healthy development. She primarily uses large 'omics datasets to study the effect of environmental exposures on pregnancy outcomes and maternal health.
Dr. Inkster received her PhD in Medical Genetics from the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada), where her research focused on evaluating DNA methylation variation in prenatal life, primarily in the context of placental epigenetics, sex differences, prenatal exposures, and X-chromosome inactivation. Rathinaraja Jeyaraj

BioI work at the intersection of AI, multimodal learning, and large-scale image analytics, with a strong focus on computational pathology and foundation models for healthcare. My current research interests include LLMs, VLMs, multimodal reasoning, whole-slide image analysis, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and trustworthy AI for medical decision support.
I develop scalable deep learning systems spanning WSI preprocessing, multiple instance learning, segmentation, survival prediction, and multimodal image-text modeling. My work also involves attention interpretability, contrastive learning, pathology foundation model adaptation, and large-scale AI pipelines. Beyond healthcare AI, I have experience in time-series forecasting, distributed computing, cloud infrastructure, and real-time computer vision systems for industrial and smart-city applications.
I am particularly interested in building reliable, interpretable, and clinically meaningful AI systems that bridge computer vision, multimodal learning, and large-scale reasoning. -

Yan Jiang

BioDr. Yan Jiang is a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Stanford Center on Early Childhood. She earned her Ph.D. in Education Studies, with a specialization in Computational Social Science, from the University of California, San Diego. Her research examines how social, cultural, and institutional conditions shape children’s developmental environments and create unequal opportunities across family and early education settings. She studies how unequal resources affect what families and educators are able to provide for children, and how unequal recognition shapes whose knowledge and practices are valued as ways of supporting children. To understand these processes, she uses quantitative, computational, and qualitative methods to examine the lived realities of children, families, and educators within the contexts of their everyday lives. Her scholarship has been recognized with the Dissertation Research Funding Award from the Society for Research in Child Development, the Yankelovich Graduate Research Grant, and the International Institute Research Fellowship at UC San Diego. Her research has appeared in leading journals, including Educational Researcher, Review of Educational Research, and Early Education and Development.

Her work focuses on the use of technology to improve educational access and health education in under-resourced areas. She also completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Stanford School of Medicine. BioCarly completed her BASc in Engineering Physics (UBC) in 2017. She began the MASc program in Biomedical Engineering at UBC in 2017 and transferred into the PhD program in the spring of 2019. Carly successfully defended her PhD thesis in July of 2024 and began a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Stanford University in September of 2024 in the Radiology Department. Carly received the Young Investigator Award from the International Society of Osteoarthritis Imaging in 2019 for her work on cartilage health in hips with bone marrow lesions. She is also a passionate educator and received a Killam Graduate TA Award in 2021 for her TA work in the Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Departments at UBC.

BioI'm a Stanford Data Science Fellow and postdoc with Rhiju Das at the Department of Biochemistry. I build lab-in-the-loop AI for RNA biology, pairing deep learning with wet-lab experiments at scale.
I did my PhD in Computer Science at the University of Cambridge with Pietro Liò, on geometric deep learning for molecular design. I built gRNAde, the first 3D generative model for RNA, and validated it in the wet lab as a visiting researcher in Phil Holliger's group at the MRC LMB. I've also interned at Prescient Design (Genentech) and FAIR Chemistry (Meta AI), and my work has been recognized by the Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship and the A*STAR National Science Scholarship. -
Israel Juarez Contreras

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsSterols are the most abundant lipid in the plasma membrane. Their structure is deeply conserved, built though a long iterative evolutionary process whose end products are the topology of the fused steroid ring system and the structure of the aliphatic tail extending from it. Together these let the molecule pack tightly against the acyl chains of neighboring lipids, which is how sterols reinforce the membrane and set its fluidity. This same interaction produces a second effect. Sterols associate preferentially with saturated lipids, particularly sphingolipids, and that preference sorts the bilayer into ordered domains, often called lipid rafts, which concentrate certain proteins and exclude others.
The Bloch hypothesis holds that the sterol biosynthetic pathway was progressively selected for membrane function, with each step yielding a molecule better suited to the bilayer than the one before it. Fluidity has historically been taken as the property under selection, but it is not the only one. Rebuilding ergosterol biosynthesis stepwise in living yeast showed that domain formation imposes its own demands, and that the two properties are not optimized by the same modifications. The pathway alternates between them, arriving at structures that regulate fluidity and organization together rather than either alone. A further design principle follows from this. The pairing between a sterol and the acyl chain length of its partner sphingolipid is highly specific. Replacing the native pathway in yeast with cholesterol biosynthesis abolished the domains ergosterol supports, since ergosterol pairs with the very long acyl chains of fungal sphingolipids while cholesterol pairs with the shorter chains of mammalian membranes.
These principles, observed in fungi, carry direct consequences for mammals, where cholesterol occupies two distinct pools. One is structural, held in complex with sphingolipids and other lipids. The other is a residual fraction, free or accessible that carries out essential roles in signaling and homeostasis. Accessible cholesterol is defined operationally, by what a probe can bind, but what it corresponds to physiochemically remains open. My central goal is to define accessible cholesterol through a more rigorous biophysical lens and connect that definition to the machinery in cells. -
Vanessa W.Y. Kan

BioI am a second-year postdoctoral researcher in Irene Llorente’s laboratory at the Department of Neurosurgery. I completed my Ph.D. at the Graduate School of Systemic Neurosciences GSN-LMU in Munich, Germany, where I was trained as a circuit neuroscientist. During my doctoral work, I focused on dissecting the circuit mechanisms underlying cortical hyperexcitability in ALS, uncovering the pathophysiological role of hyper-responsive layer 2⁄3 neurons (one of the main inputs to layer 5) in the disease course. Currently, my research bridges circuit neuroscience, stem cell biology, and bioinformatics to explore mechanisms of neural repair and regeneration. I utilize advanced experimental and computational tools, including in vivo calcium imaging in awake, freely behaving rodents; machine learning-based motion sequencing (MoSeq); anterograde and retrograde viral tracing techniques; and transplantation of iPSC-derived glial-enriched progenitors and cortical interneurons. In parallel, I apply spatial transcriptomics and single-cell RNA sequencing to map cell-type–specific interactions and molecular signatures during neural circuit remodeling.
My research focuses on understanding the circuit mechanisms underlying neurological conditions such as stroke and identifying how cell-based therapies mediate repair. The ultimate goal of my work is to uncover molecular and cellular processes that promote graft–host integration and functional recovery, paving the way for next-generation regenerative therapies for the injured brain.
In addition to translational research, I am also passionate about scientific education and outreach. I mentor community college students twice a year through the Stanford Science Small Group, in which I share my own experience in research and guide them through the research process. To expand my outreach efforts, in the past summer, I collaborated with Invent Your Own Future as well as The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and organized a summer camp on Neuroscience x AI research for over 20 high school students in Hong Kong. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am interested in using mass spectrometry to study protein glycosylation, a complex post-translational modification that is known to be heavily altered in cancer and could improve early cancer detection. I am using mass spectrometry to study protein glycosylation in a variety of clinical samples and cancers, but I am particularly interested in proximal fluid samples to develop more accessible ways to obtain clinical samples to study cancer and women's health.

BioDr. James Regun Karmoker started his career as a Lecturer at the University of Asia Pacific, Bangladesh, after completing his B. Pharm and MS Pharm Tech from the same university. He obtained a doctorate degree in Vision Science from the University of Oklahoma, USA, where he studied immune cell activation in the context of retinal pigment epithelium injury. Currently, he is a postdoctoral scholar in Prof. Mary Elizabeth Hartnett’s lab studying age-related macular degeneration.

Siva Kasinathan

BioSiva Kasinathan, MD, PhD is a physician-scientist and Instructor of Pediatric Rheumatology at the Stanford University School of Medicine and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. In addition to caring for children and young adults with rheumatic diseases in his clinical practice, Siva conducts research to advance the understanding of mechanisms of autoimmunity and autoinflammation.
Siva holds an MD and PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of Washington, where he developed high-throughput methods for epigenome profiling and contributed new insights in chromatin biology and gene regulation. During his clinical training in pediatrics and rheumatology at Stanford, he pioneered approaches for single-molecule analysis of genetic variation, DNA methylation, and chromatin structure.
Siva's current research bridges genomics and immunology, focusing on developing and applying sensitive technologies to unravel the genetic and molecular underpinnings of lupus, arthritis, and other disorders of immune regulation. As a physician-scientist, Siva is committed to translating fundamental discoveries into precision therapies and biomarkers to improve outcomes for patients with immune-mediated diseases.
