Raj Fadadu
Casual - Non-Exempt, Epidemiology and Population Health
BioRaj Fadadu is currently a dermatology resident physician at the University of California, San Diego. He has experience conducting epidemiology research projects, particularly related to environmental exposures and skin diseases (e.g., atopic dermatitis and psoriasis) as well as epigenetics (e.g., EWAS and epigenetic age acceleration). At Stanford, his research in Dr. Andres Cardenas's group focuses on the relationship between environmental exposures and epigenetic modifications. He also held leadership roles in local and national organizations involved in climate change advocacy and education, working to improve community and patient health. In addition, he is a strong advocate for health equity and increasing access to medical care for people experiencing homelessness and has implemented innovative projects to do so while serving as an Albert Schweitzer Fellow and Director of student-run free clinics in Berkeley, CA. For his impactful work, he was named an Environmental Education "30 Under 30" in 2022 and received the Excellence in Climate Leadership Award from the American Public Health Association in 2022 and Emerging Physician Leader Award from Health Care Without Harm in 2021.
He received a M.D. from UC San Francisco, M.S. degree in Health and Medical Sciences (with concentrations in Environmental Research and Healthcare Management) from the UC Berkeley School of Public Health, and received a B.A. degree in Public Health from UC Berkeley (graduated with Highest Distinction and Research Honors). -
Gracia Fahed, MD
Postdoctoral Scholar, Cardiovascular Institute
BioDr. Fahed earned her medical degree from the American University of Beirut (AUB) in Lebanon. She graduated at the top of her class and was recognized for her outstanding academic achievements and compassionate patient care. Over the course of her medical studies, Dr. Fahed concentrated her research on understanding the pathophysiology behind endothelial dysfunction, hypertension and the metabolic syndrome. As a postdoctoral scholar in the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute, she now focuses on left ventricular diastolic dysfunction and early diagnosis of genetic cardiomyopathy, with a specific focus on transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis, a serious yet often overlooked cause of heart failure. Dr. Fahed aims to improve risk-stratification to enhance diagnostic care and improve cardiovascular outcomes.

Robert Michael Fairchild

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Fairchild’s research interests center on novel applications of ultrasonography in rheumatologic disease. Current active research endeavors include using ultrasound 1) to evaluate articular and soft tissue manifestations of systemic sclerosis, 2) to screen, detect and monitor of connective tissue disease associated interstitial lung disease, 3) and applying deep learning techniques to rheumatology ultrasound and imaging.

Bita Fakhri, MD, MPH
Assistant Professor of Medicine (Hematology)
BioDr. Bita Fakhri is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology at Stanford University School of Medicine. She specializes in the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL), hairy cell leukemia, and other hematologic malignancies. As a clinical scientist, Dr. Fakhri is dedicated to caring for patients, teaching trainees, and researching novel therapies for patients with CLL/SLL. Dr. Fakhri has co-authored numerous publications on topics including CLL, novel targeted agents, and cellular therapies for patients with hematologic malignancies. Currently, Dr. Fakhri is the director of the CLL clinical trial portfolio at Stanford. Additionally, in her role as the DEI ambassador of the Division of Hematology, her main focus is to enhance trial equity among underserved and marginalized populations in the Stanford catchment area.

BioI am primarily a lupus researcher and identify as a pain scientist and methodologist in this field. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) disproportionately affects women and racial minorities and is the fifth most common cause of death among 15- to 24-year-old Black and Hispanic women in the U.S., highlighting its significant public health impact. More than half of patients with SLE experience chronic pain, often secondary to SLE itself or overlapping conditions (e.g., migraines, low back pain, fibromyalgia), contributing significantly to disability and impaired quality of life. Chronic pain is not merely a symptom but a disease in its own right—one that deserves the same rigorous study and clinical attention as comorbidities like kidney disease and cardiovascular disease in rheumatology. The enormous global burden of chronic pain underscores the urgent need for a clear, standardized definition of pain as a disease, particularly in autoimmune rheumatic diseases where pain can arise from inflammatory, nociplastic, and biopsychosocial mechanisms. Without recognizing pain as a distinct disease entity, its mechanisms remain poorly understood, and effective treatment strategies remain underdeveloped.
I am a co-Principal Investigator of the Pain Intelligence Lab, where our mission is to advance the study of pain as a disease in rheumatology through two primary objectives. First, we develop and validate computational methods that enable clinicians and researchers to leverage electronic health records, administrative claims, and disease registries to study chronic pain as a distinct disease entity in rheumatology. By applying machine learning, natural language processing, and real-world data analysis, we seek to enhance pain phenotyping, classify distinct pain subtypes, and develop predictive models for treatment response. Second, we use a biopsychosocial framework to examine the predictive power of biomarkers and psychosocial measures in rheumatologic pain. By integrating biological, psychological, and social determinants of pain, we aim to conduct rigorous, patient-oriented research that translates targeted assessments into mechanistically informed, personalized treatment approaches for optimized clinical care. Ultimately, my long term career goal is to bridge the gap between research and clinical practice, ensuring that pain management in autoimmune rheumatic diseases is precise, equitable, and optimized for improved patient outcomes. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsEarly neural progenitors respond to extrinsic cues that maintain and support their potency. These stem/ progenitor cells are in direct contact with the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which acts as part of their niche. Our research program encompasses the early neural stem cell niche, neural tube closure, CSF, metabolism, and cortical neuronal development. We are dedicated to broad collaboration focused on translating an understanding of neurodevelopment and CSF biology into regenerative strategies.

Alice C. Fan

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Fan is a physician scientist who studies how turning off oncogenes (cancer genes) can cause tumor regression in preclinical and clinical translational studies. Based on her findings, she has initiated clinical trials studying how targeted therapies affect cancer signals in kidney cancer and low grade lymphoma. In the laboratory, she uses new nanotechnology strategies for tumor diagnosis and treatment to define biomarkers for personalized therapy.

Richard E. Fan

BioRichard E. Fan, Ph.D., is an engineer embedded in the Department of Urology in the Stanford School of Medicine.
Dr. Fan’s research relates to the development of clinically driven biomedical instrumentation and medical devices. He is interested in translational application of emerging technologies in the medical and surgical spaces, as well as the development of platforms to explore clinical and pre-clinical evaluation. His primary work is currently focused on image guided detection and treatment of prostate cancer, including MR-US fusion, focal therapies, embedded systems and robotics. -
Daniel Z Fang

BioDaniel Z Fang, MD, FACP completed his medical school training at UC San Diego School of Medicine and residency at Stanford University. He is a board-certified academic hospitalist at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System and Clinical Associate Professor (Affiliated) within the Stanford Division of Hospital Medicine.
As Assistant DCOS for Acute Care Hospital Operations, he provides administrative and clinical guidance to clinical service staff in the areas of inpatient performance, patient flow optimization, policy review, project planning, and process improvement initiatives. His professional interests include healthcare administration and quality improvement. -
Rongxin Fang
Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and, by courtesy, of Genetics
BioRongxin received his Ph.D. in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology at UC San Diego, where he was mentored by Bing Ren (2015-2019). During this time, he developed high-throughput genomic technologies and computational tools to map the structure and activity of the mammalian genome at a large scale with single-cell resolution. He then applied these approaches to understand how cis-regulatory elements such as enhancers in the genome control gene expression and how this process can give rise to the distinct gene expression programs that underlie the cellular diversity in the mammalian brain. As an HHMI-Damon Runyon Postdoctoral Fellow, he worked with Xiaowei Zhuang at Harvard University (2019-2024). There, he developed and applied genome-scale and volumetric 3D transcriptome imaging methods to map the molecular and cellular architecture of the mammalian brain during evolution and aging. He also participated in the collaboration with Adam Cohen and Catherine Dulac to combine transcriptome imaging with functional neuronal imaging to identify neuronal populations in the animal brain that underlie specific bran functions.

His research interests lie in driving AI innovations in medicine, with a focus on AI model design and development, performance and robustness evaluation, and quality monitoring and debugging. Gary S. Fanton, MD
Clinical Professor, Orthopaedic Surgery
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Gary Fanton is the Chief of the Section of Sports Medicine at Stanfords Department of Orthopedic Surgery. His practice primarily involves the diagnostic evaluation and treatment of sports and trauma-related injuries of the upper extremity, knee, and ankle. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is currently the Team Physician in Orthopedics for the San Francisco 49ers. Dr. Fanton's past experience includes positions as team orthopedist for the San Francisco Giants, company physician for the San Jose Ballet, head team orthopedist for Stanford University football and basketball, and team orthopedist for Stanfords additional 29 varsity sports. He co-founded the SOAR clinic where he was an active partner in private practice since 1983. He holds a B.S. degree from the University of Michigan and M.D. degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Dr. Fanton's special interests include arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder...specifically, injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament of the knee, cartilage injuries, rotator cuff tears, and shoulder instability. He has done extensive research on knee ligament tears, explored new techniques for shoulder stabilization and tendon repair, and he utilizes state-of-the-art surgical procedures to enhance rehabilitation and recovery after surgery. He is frequently asked to be a guest lecturer both nationally and internationally on these and other sports-medicine related topics. He has also authored dozens of articles on sports injuries and new surgical techniques.
Dr. Fanton was a co-founder and board member of Oratec Interventions, a medical device start-up for minimally invasive spine and joint procedures that went public in April, 2000, which was subsequently purchased by Smith-Nephew in 2002. He actively serves on the medical advisory board for several public and private surgical device companies in the Orthopedic industry and he continues to design and develop unique surgical devices for minimally invasive surgery. He has co-authored several device patents and has several others pending.
Dr. Fanton has been a member in good standing with the American Academy of Orthopedic surgeons since 1985 and he is a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He is also member of the Orthopedic Research Society, NFL Team Physicians Society, the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine, The International Knee Society, International Cartilage Repair Society, and a founding member of the International Musculoskeletal Laser Society. -

Current Role at StanfordAs Senior Facilities Planner in the OFPM (Office of Facilities, Planning and Management) for the SoM (School of Medicine), I collaborate with Dept. Chairs, Faculty, Researchers, Staff and Facilities to optimize layouts for appx. 2M square feet of space as adjustments are needed to offices, labs, and teaching spaces across the campuses of Stanford University. I work with consultants, designers, project managers, furniture vendors, movers and others to determine the optimal solutions. After 30+ years of being in architectural firms working with educational institutions, I'm thrilled to be inside that setting and contributing to the success of the School of Medicine.

Diana Farid
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Vaden Health Center
BioDiana Farid MD, MPH is a physician, award-winning author, poet, and filmmaker. She is a staff physician at the Stanford Vaden Health Center and Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine. She holds a BA in Peace and Conflict Studies from Berkeley, with a concentration in public health, socio-economic development, and human rights. She was awarded a fellowship by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to be a Child and Family Health Leadership Fellow at UCLA, where she also earned a Masters in Public Health focused on community health, health communications, and storytelling. She creates and amplifies stories and art to foster health.
As a physician consultant for The Media Project, Advocates for Youth, Diana worked with writers and producers for television shows, such as GREY’S ANATOMY and STRONG MEDICINE, to promote adolescent health through entertainment. Her debut feature length documentary film production, AMERICAN RHYTHMS (2008) (americanrhythmsmovie.com/), explores the positive impact of music on elementary school students.
She has lead or presented at Medical Humanities and Arts programs across Stanford, including annual readings of her original poetry in collaboration with the St. Lawrence String Quartet, leading The Pegasus Writers' "The Body as Temple" curated reading, and leading Medicine and the Muse's annual collaboration with UNAFF, among others. As Assistant Director of Stanford School of Medicine’s Program in Bioethics and Film, she produced film screenings and panel discussions with producers, directors, field experts, Stanford faculty, students, and the community, exploring films with vital bioethical implications. She established the first Stanford Film and Medicine Interest group for medical students to study film as a health promotion tool and has mentored medical student film projects. She produced the Stanford Medicine and the Muse, Medical Humanities and the Arts' 2018 Frankenstein@200 year-long cross-campus film screening and panel series on the personal, cultural, social, and bioethical impact of medical research, technology, and healthcare through the lens of story in film. Currently, she mentors Medical Humanities and Art Faculty Fellows.
Diana’s poems have been presented in anthologies, journals, gallery exhibits, and live story-telling events, including The Nocturnists. Her poem, "Dear Medicine", is part of the seminal 2019 report by the National Academy of Medicine, “Taking Action Against Clinician Burnout”. She is an Editorial Board member of the medical humanities journal, The Pharos.
Her multi-award-winning picture book, WHEN YOU BREATHE, melds respiratory science with poetry. Her multi-award-winning novel, WAVE, noted as “Raw and powerful…Rich, layered and heart-rending” — Kirkus, won the Cybils Award for Novel in Verse and was named a Best Middle Grade Book of 2022 by the School Library Journal. WAVE highlights the power of poetry and music on wellbeing. Her 2024 books, THE LIGHT OF HOME and ALREADY ALL THE LOVE, celebrate home and presence. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy lab of molecular and cellular immunology is interested in research in the general field of T cell activation and autoimmunity. We have identified and characterized a gene (GRAIL) that seems to control regulatory T cell (Treg) responsiveness by inhibiting the Treg IL-2 receptor desensitization. We have characterized a gene (Deaf1) that plays a major role in peripheral tolerance in T1D. Using PBC gene expression, we have provisionally identified a signature of risk and progression in T1D.

Mohsen Fathzadeh
Genomic Scientist, Epidemiology and Population Health
BioMohsen Fathzadeh, a seasoned Medical Geneticist, has dedicated over 20 years to genomic science. His academic journey began at Yale University, where he completed his Ph.D. thesis under Prof. Arya Mani, focusing on a genetic form of familial Metabolic Syndrome. From 2015 to 2021, he served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University, specializing in Cardiovascular Medicine, Psychiatry, and Public Health Sciences. During this tenure, he conducted comprehensive functional genomic analyses under the mentorship of esteemed professors.
Mohsen's collaborative efforts with Merck & Co., Inc. led to the identification of a gene regulator associated with body fat distribution. His research scope also includes the characterization of genes linked to insulin resistance and obesity. Recently, he explored the (epi)genetic link between newborn body fat distribution and high maternal gestational glucose levels, focusing on mother-child cohorts from diverse and underserved communities.
His primary goal is to utilize his findings to enhance our understanding of the genes and evolutionary pathways influencing healthspan and age-related diseases, thereby improving patient lives.
After completing his postdoctoral research in 2021, Mohsen spent two years in the biotech industry, specializing in genetic testing and variant assessment. He is currently affiliated with Stanford's Population Health Center, studying epigenetic disease mechanisms in mother-child cohorts.
Outside his professional life, Mohsen leads an active lifestyle and enjoys learning about diverse cultures. -

Yousof Fawzy

BioYousof Fawzy is an experienced Emergency Medical Services Supervisor, Clinical Coordinator, and Healthcare Safety Professional. He has held appointments in both clinical and operational capacities across the private and public sectors. Before attending Stanford, he served as the Safety Operations Leader for Kaiser Permanente's medical centers across Santa Clara County. At Kaiser, he developed and managed an integrated workplace safety program while spearheading initiatives related to COVID safety, threat management, and workplace violence in healthcare. Previously, in his EMS roles, he worked at high-profile events including the Grammy Awards on the Red Carpet and managed the clinical operations of the Golden State Warriors Chase Center Arena in San Francisco.
Yousof's scholarly interests include social emergency medicine, harm reduction, and utilizing epidemiological frameworks to address health disparities in vulnerable populations. He graduated Cum Laude from the University of California Los Angeles, where he studied Integrative Biology and Physiology. Yousof aspires to use his medical education as a means to dismantle systemic barriers to healthcare access and address the gaps in care for marginalized populations. -
