Sanzeeda Baig Shuchi
Ph.D. Student in Chemical Engineering, admitted Summer 2021
BioSanzeeda Baig Shuchi envisions a world where energy crisis is a thing of the past. She is a Ph.D. candidate in Chemical Engineering (ChemE) at Stanford University. Her current energy research focuses on improving and understanding lithium battery stability using surface science and interface engineering supervised by Prof. Stacey F. Bent and Prof. Yi Cui. She is a TomKat Center Graduate Fellow for Translational Research and a Link Foundation Energy Fellow. She completed her MS in ChemE from Stanford. She also received the Summer First Fellowship and ChemE departmental fellowship. Before Stanford, she completed her BS in the same field from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), where she graduated with the highest CGPA in the Faculty of Engineering and is a prime minister gold medal candidate. Other than research, she serves as the lab safety officer in Bent group and enjoys performing departmental student mentoring and student representative activities. She has also previously served as a co-organizer of Engineering Students for DEI (ES4DEI) at Stanford and the vice-president of Environment Watch: BUET. Outside the lab, she enjoys houseplants, interior decoration, painting, board games, and exploring local beaches and restaurants.

Lauren Simitz
Ph.D. Student in Aeronautics and Astronautics, admitted Autumn 2021
BioHi there! I'm an aerospace engineer, chemist, and geoscientist striving to both protect our world and advance technologies to explore new ones. Sustainability, teaching, and DEI are just as strong of passions, in and outside of the aerospace sector.
My work in industry (Chevron, SpaceX, Benchmark, Boeing) and academia catalyzed my interest in advancing sustainable, safe propulsion and energy systems. As a Stanford PhD candidate in the Hypersonics, Propulsion, and Energy Laboratory (HyPEL) working under Professor Ronald Hanson, I employ fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and chemical kinetics to experimentally probe combustion behavior.
I welcome messages from folks with similar interests. I am also happy to answer any questions about graduate school, fellowships, aerospace/chemical engineering/geoscience, and industry careers. -

Karan P. Singh
Ph.D. Student in Electrical Engineering, admitted Autumn 2023
BioI am an incoming electrical engineering Ph.D. student and full-time post-baccalaureate researcher, currently advised by Dr. Kim Butts Pauly in the Department of Radiology. My research will be funded by the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship.
My lab works primarily in transcranial ultrasound neuromodulation, a non-invasive therapeutic modality with the potential to cure neurological diseases such as epilepsy, Alzheimer's, and even addiction. My primary focus at the moment is using machine learning, particularly sequence models, to improve therapy outcomes and efficiency.
Previously, I studied electrical engineering at Cal Poly SLO and was the youngest engineering graduate in the school's history. There, I worked with Dr. Benjamin Hawkins on microfluidics research examining the electrowetting effect.
Outside of academia, I enjoy playing the piano, badminton, working out, and cooking! I am also the co-founder and co-president of the Stanford Piano Society. -

Alyson Singleton
Ph.D. Student in Environment and Resources, admitted Autumn 2021
BioAly is a PhD student in the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment & Resources, investigating the impact of large-scale global change on infectious disease transmission and broader health dynamics. Based on the concepts of One Health and Planetary Health, she focuses on the design and evaluation of win-win solutions that can synergistically benefit human and environmental health. As we anticipate widening disease disparities under increasing climate instability, her research aims to identify opportunities to prevent and mitigate these compounding harms. She approaches these topics by integrating novel computational methods, field-data collection, and epidemiologic techniques.
Prior to coming to Stanford, Aly was a Data Science Fellow at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention where she developed analytic tools for outbreak detection and triage of multiple pathogens and supported the CDC’s Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Response. She also worked at the People, Place & Health Collective at the Brown University School of Public Health while earning her undergraduate (BS, Applied Mathematics) and master's degrees (MA, Biostatistics). Outside of science she loves exploring the world through backcountry travel, rollerblading, and live music events.
