BioDr. Divya Gupta is a board-certified, fellowship-trained neurologist with Stanford Health Care. She is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Division of Sleep Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.
As a sleep medicine specialist, Dr. Gupta has expertise caring for a wide range of sleep disorders in children and adults. She develops personalized treatment plans for problems such as insomnia, sleep-related breathing disorders, disruptive nighttime sleep behaviors, and sleep-related movement disorders. Pankaj Gupta

BioPankaj Gupta is a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University working at the intersection of systems neuroscience, neuroengineering, and computational modeling. His research focuses on understanding how distributed neural circuits generate behavior and how these circuits reorganize during learning and recovery, particularly in the context of motor control and neurological disorders such as stroke.
Pankaj completed his Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia, where he investigated brain–behavior dynamics using widefield and two-photon calcium imaging in mice. His work combined experimental neuroscience with real-time closed-loop systems, enabling the modulation of neural activity through behaviorally contingent feedback. He also developed computational tools and biologically inspired recurrent neural network models to capture large-scale neural dynamics and inter-regional interactions.
At Stanford, his research expands to include large-scale electrophysiology using Neuropixels probes to study cerebellar and subcortical circuits involved in motor control and recovery. He is particularly interested in how neural populations across multiple brain regions coordinate and adapt following injury, and how these insights can inform the design of closed-loop neurostimulation and brain–machine interface systems. -

Brooke Gurland, MD, FACS

BioPelvic floor and functional bowel disorders encompass a wide range of symptoms and conditions that affect people of all ages and genders. These include constipation, obstructed defecation, fecal incontinence, rectal prolapse, pelvic organ prolapse, irritable bowel disorders, and urinary and sexual dysfunction. While rarely life-threatening, these conditions profoundly affect quality of life, self-confidence, and daily function — and they deserve the same serious, compassionate attention as any other illness.
I am a colorectal surgeon and lifestyle medicine physician specializing in anorectal disorders and pelvic floor dysfunction. I serve as Research Director of the Stanford Pelvic Health Center, where I lead a multidisciplinary program that brings together colorectal surgery, urogynecology, urology, gastroenterology, and pelvic floor physical therapy to provide integrated, whole-person care.
My surgical training was at Cleveland Clinic, where I spent nearly a decade building and leading a multidisciplinary pelvic floor clinic and performing hundreds of combined procedures with colleagues in urology and urogynecology. I was among the early adopters of robotic surgical techniques for women with combined vaginal and rectal prolapse, and developed expertise in complex procedures including repair of intestinal and rectovaginal fistula. Earlier in my career, I established a Pelvic Floor Center at Maimonides Medical Center, where I received a Jahnigan Career Development Award studying multicompartment prolapse in elderly women. I joined Stanford's Department of Surgery, Division of Colorectal Surgery in 2017.
My research spans surgical outcomes, pelvic floor quality of life, and patient-centered technology. I am the principal investigator for the Stanford Pelvic Health Registry, a longitudinal database of over 475 patients with rectal prolapse followed since 2018. I was a 2020–2021 Stanford Biodesign Fellow, and my current work includes development and validation of disease-specific patient education tools. I believe that patients who understand their condition make better decisions — and recover better too.
I am also board-certified in lifestyle medicine. Prevention, diet, exercise, pelvic floor physical therapy, and behavior change are not secondary to surgery in my practice — they are the first line of care. Surgery, when it is needed, works best in patients whose lifestyle has been optimized. This philosophy guides how I counsel patients and how I train the next generation of surgeons and clinicians.
When I am not in the clinic or operating room, I can be found at the farmers market, fermenting something in my kitchen, practicing yoga, or spending time with my dog. -

Edward Guzman

Dalena Ha

BioDalena Ha, DMD, MPH, MS is a dental provider with a strong commitment to community service, public health, and advancing access to equitable care. She is a National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholar and holds degrees in Dental Medicine and Public Health from A.T. Still University, as well as a Master of Science in Biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University, where she concentrated on regenerative medicine and stem cell technologies.
During dental school, Dalena co-authored “The Current Applications and Efficacy of Stem Cells in Dentistry” published in EC Dental Science (2023), reflecting her interest in translational research and the future of regenerative therapies in dental care. Her academic work is rooted in a commitment to evidence-based practice and the integration of innovation into clinical decision-making.
She is the founder of the Remembering My Roots Charity Group, established in 2018 to serve underserved communities through local and international outreach. Her participation in the Good Samaritan Medical and Dental Mission further highlights her dedication to global health equity. Dalena also served as President of the ASDOH chapter of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and as a national board member on ADEA’s Council of Students, Residents, and Fellows, helping to shape student engagement and professional development in dental education. -

Richard Haarburger

BioRichard Haarburger is a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Medicine (Primary Care and Population Health) at Stanford University, working in the lab of Pascal Geldsetzer. He studies questions at the intersection of epidemiology, health policy, and applied econometrics, with a focus on causal inference in large real-world health datasets.
His current work uses quasi-experimental and survival analysis methods to evaluate how preventive interventions (e.g. herpes zoster vaccinations) affect neurological outcomes such as dementia incidence at the population level. He also develops empirical strategies for dealing with challenges common in observational health data, including treatment effect heterogeneity, incomplete outcome follow-up, and competing risks.
Richard’s broader research interests include impact evaluation methods, causal machine learning, and the health and economic consequences of new technologies. During his PhD in quantitative economics, he worked on measurement bias in health surveys, high-dimensional forecasting, and heterogeneity in technology adoption. -

Pardes Habib

BioPardes Habib, MD/PhD, is an Instructor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford University School of Medicine. His research focuses on how human neural stem cells (hNSCs) drive brain repair after chronic stroke. By integrating state-of-the-art imaging (MRI/PET) with spatially resolved multi omics, he maps structural and molecular remodeling after stroke and aims to identify diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers that drive the development and refinement of precision, cell-based therapies.
Dr. Habib completed dual doctorates in Neurology/Neuroscience (MD/PhD) and Biochemistry (PhD) at RWTH Aachen University in Germany, where he later earned a Habilitation (Venia Legendi) in Experimental Neurology—an academic qualification comparable to an associate professorship.
As head of Aachen’s Translational Stroke Research Group, he investigated neuroprotective and neuroinflammatory pathways and illuminated the roles of inflammasome activation and the unfolded protein response in acute ischemic stroke.
Since joining Dr. Gary Steinberg’s laboratory at Stanford in 2022, Dr. Habib has focused on decoding the molecular crosstalk among hNSCs, immune cells, and host neural circuits. His long-term goal is to transform these insights into targeted interventions that restore function and quality of life for patients living with the aftermath of stroke. -

Laura Michele Hack

BioDr. Laura M. Hack is an Assistant of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University and the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (PAVAHCS). As Associate Director of the Novel & Precision Neurotherapeutics Program at the Stanford Center for Precision Mental Health, Dr. Hack leads a translational, patient-centered research group that designs and implements mechanistic clinical trials for biologically informed subtypes of Mood, Anxiety, and Trauma-related Disorders (MATRDs).
Her work spans repurposed pharmacologic interventions (e.g., guanfacine), neuromodulation techniques (e.g., repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation [TMS]), and therapies involving altered states of consciousness (i.e., ketamine, MDMA, psilocybin, and anesthesia-induced dreaming). Across these modalities, Dr. Hack's focus is on tailoring treatment based on objective, biologically anchored markers that match the patient’s profile.
Dr. Hack also directs the Stanford Precision Psychiatry Clinic, a high-touch, high-tech consultation service designed to support individuals with a primary diagnosis of major depression and often comorbid MATRDs. This clinic integrates the investigational use of high-definition neuroimaging (personalized brain circuit scores) with symptom profiling, neurocognitive testing, pharmacogenomic analysis, inflammatory biomarkers, and standard blood work. The aim is to generate individualized insights that inform treatment decisions and help patients better understand the biological underpinnings of their condition—often reducing self-blame and empowering engagement in care.
In her role as Deputy Director as well as Ketamine and Education Lead of the Precision Neuromodulation Clinic (PNC) at PAVAHCS, Dr. Hack specializes in delivering evidence-based, FDA-cleared interventions including TMS and intranasal ketamine for Veterans experiencing treatment-resistant depression, frequently in the context of comorbid PTSD. -

BioDr. Francois Haddad, MD is a Clinical Professor of Medicine that specializes in the field of cardio-vascular imaging, pulmonary hypertension, advanced heart failure and transplantation. Dr. Haddad has over 18 years of practice in the field of cardiology. BioLindsey Haddock, MD, MAEd, is a geriatrician and clinician-educator with a master's degree in education. She is the Vice Chief for Education in Primary Care and Population Health. She is an Educator-4-CARE faculty in the School of Medicine, serving as a longitudinal teacher and mentor for medical students, and also precepts students in the ambulatory medicine clerkship. Jen Haensel

BioI am a Research Scientist in the Roberts Vision Development & Oculomotor Lab at Stanford University’s Department of Ophthalmology, working at the intersection of vision science, neuroscience, and experimental psychology. My current research uses eye-tracking, photorefraction, and psychophysics to study oculomotor development and visual function in amblyopia, strabismus, and concussion. I also work on developing methodology to record accommodative measurements and gaze behaviour in dynamic, naturalistic settings.
I completed my PhD in Experimental Psychology at Birkbeck, University of London (UK), where I used advanced eye-tracking techniques to study the influence of postnatal experience on social gaze behaviour. Prior to joining Stanford, I also worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bath (UK), developing empirical human-robot interaction studies to inform the ethical design of humanoid robots. -
Kurt M. Hafer, MD, FACP

BioDr. Kurt Hafer is a board-certified physician and Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) practicing Primary Care Internal Medicine exclusively at Stanford Concierge Medicine.
Dr. Hafer grew up in Chapel Hill, NC and attended Pomona College, where he received his undergraduate degree in Psychology. After completing post-baccalaureate pre-medical coursework at the University of Michigan (UM) in Ann Arbor, he worked as a neuro-endocrine peptide researcher at UM.
In 1999, Dr. Hafer graduated from The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed a Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC) in San Jose in 2002. Between 2002 to 2012 he was a Teaching Attending Physician at SCVMC as well as an adjunct Stanford physician, training medical students and residents in Internal Medicine.
Dr. Hafer joined Stanford in 2012 as the founding Medical Director of the Stanford Primary Care, Portola Valley Clinic -- Stanford's first new primary care clinic in many years. His five years of leadership at the Portola clinic included incorporating the latest technologies into primary care, adopting active population health panel management, LEAN management practices, embedded specialists and evidence-based, best-care practices as a viable model for the future of Stanford Primary Care.
In January 2017, Dr. Hafer joined Stanford Concierge Medicine as Medical Director. In addition to caring for his patients, his duties include directing the clinic and expanding clinic offerings in mental health, wellness, and piloting Primary Care Genetics and Pharmacogenomics screening programs as a test bed for Stanford Primary Care.
While at Stanford, Dr. Hafer has served as a lecturer for the American College of Physician's Internal Medicine Maintenance of Certification Course held in San Francisco, and has been a Reviewer for the American College of Physicians on multiple projects. He has served on numerous Stanford Healthcare committees and worked with teams on numerous projects, including Stanford's Primary Care 2.0 Redesign, Hypertension Center of Excellence Clinical Integration Team, The Virtual Hypertension Monitoring Project, and Stanford's Primary Care Precision Health program design team. He has directed pilots of TeleHealth phone and video visits, integration of specialty care MDs into our primary care clinics. He led a successful Clinical Effectiveness Leadership Training (CELT) project using clinical pharmacists embedded in primary care clinics to more effectively manage diabetes and high blood pressure between MD visits. He has also served as the Physician Leader for Stanford's Realizing Improvement through Team Empowerment (RITE) Quality Improvement Program.
He currently serves as a Physician Member and Chair (2023, 2024) of the Global Executive Services (GES) Network Steering Committee, part of the Vizient University Health System Consortium, a national group of ~200 members of academic medical centers with Executive Health or Concierge Medicine services.
When not caring for patients, Dr. Hafer enjoys spending time outdoors with family and friends. He is married to a Stanford University History Professor, has a daughter who graduated from Stanford and UCLA Medical School (now a resident at UCSF), as well as a son who completed a masters degree in computer science at Stanford. He is an avid lifelong cyclist (road and MTB, logging up to 8k miles annually), hiker, has a passion for tinkering with vintage Datsuns and enjoys wearing vintage watches.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy laboratory is focused on understanding the cellular mechanisms which mediate end-organ failure in pediatric sepsis. Our current work focuses on determining the role of altered mitochondrial dynamics in sepsis-induced multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Specifically, we focus on understanding the mechanisms that mediate derangements in mitochondrial fission and autophagy in sepsis.
