Matthew Abrahams
Lecturer
BioMatt Abrahams is a passionate, collaborative and innovative educator and coach. He has published research articles on cognitive planning, persuasion, and interpersonal communication.
Matt recently published the second edition of his book Speaking Up Without Freaking Out, a book written to help the millions of people who suffer from anxiety around speaking in public. Additionally, Matt developed a software package that provides instant, proscriptive feedback to presenters. Prior to teaching, Matt held senior leadership positions in several leading software companies, where he created and ran global training and development organizations.
Matt is also Co-Founder and Principal at Bold Echo Communications Solutions, a presentation and communication skills company based in Silicon Valley that helps people improve their presentation skills. Matt has worked with executives to help prepare and present keynote addresses and IPO road shows, conduct media interviews, and deliver TED talks.
He is currently a member of the Management Communication Association (where he received a “Rising Star” award) as well as the National and Western States Communication Associations. Matt received his undergraduate degree in psychology from Stanford and his graduate degree in communication studies from UC Davis. -
Avidit Acharya

BioAvidit Acharya is an associate professor of Political Science and an associate professor, by courtesy, in the Graduate School of Business. His research specializes in the fields of political economy and game theory, especially as it applies to topics in comparative politics and international relations. Before coming to Stanford, Avi taught for two years at the University of Rochester.

Burton Alper

BioBurt has dedicated his entire career to making exceptional communication a competitive advantage. He helps leaders articulate their ideas more effectively through improved content development, storytelling, and presentation techniques.
He serves as a Lecturer and Presentation Coach at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. There, he helps students on all forms of communication ranging from business writing to oral presentations. As part of Stanford’s IGNITE faculty, Burt works with entrepreneurs in India and China to help them deliver compelling investor pitch presentations. He has worked with senior leaders in Stanford’s Athletic Department and several distinguished faculty members at Stanford’s School of Medicine.
Burt also consults with entrepreneurs, executives and corporate teams outside of Stanford who are preparing for high-stakes and high-profile presentations. His coaching ranges from initial content strategy through delivery coaching and anxiety management.
Prior to his work in the presentation coaching arena, Burt spent 12 years at Catchword Branding, a firm he co-founded in 1998. During his tenure there, he served as the head of strategy and business development. -
Mohsen Bayati

Scott Brady
Lecturer
BioScott Brady is a founding partner at Innovation Endeavors, an early stage venture capital firm with offices in Palo Alto and New York City,. Previously Scott was a serial entrepreneur and co-founded three publicly traded tech companies.
In his role as an investor, Scott looks to partner with entrepreneurs who are tackling technically difficult challenges that are capital intensive and truly transformative. These companies leverage a proliferation of data and new computation and automation tools to run more experiments; learn and iterate faster, better, and cheaper; and speed up the growth cycle.
Scott has led Innovation Endeavors investments in multiple Stanford Graduate School of Business-founded companies, including Plenty, which is driving the evolution of the $3 trillion agriculture industry with indoor, vertical farms that are powered by machine learning, data science, and automation; Clear Metal, which is leveraging AI and machine learning to clean up disorganized, dirty data in the supply chain, making it easier to predict problems and manage complexity; and Citrine, which uses AI and massive data sets to accelerate materials discovery and product development.
Prior to joining Innovation Endeavors, Scott was the chief executive officer of Slice, where he was also a co-founder and board member. Prior to working at Slice, he was co- founder and chief executive officer of FiberTower, co-founder and chief technology officer of Clarus Corp., and co-founder and chief technology officer of SQLFinancials.
Scott is also a lecturer in management at Stanford GSB, where he teaches about management and new venture formation. Additionally, he serves on the school’s Advisory Council and is chairman of the advisory board for its MSx Program.
Scott earned his master’s in management from Stanford GSB and a bachelor’s in finance, with high honors, from the University of Florida. Scott holds multiple software and technology patents. -

He is also the Ralph Landau Senior Fellow at SIEPR, and a Professor, by courtesy, at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and at the Department of Economics. Prof. Brynjolfsson is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and co-author of six books, including The Second Machine Age. His research, teaching and speaking focus on the effects of digital technologies, including AI, on the economy and business.

Geoffrey Cohen

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMuch of my research examines processes related to identity maintenance and their implications for social problems. One primary aim of my research is the development of theory-driven, rigorously tested intervention strategies that further our understanding of the processes underpinning social problems and that offer solutions to alleviate them. Two key questions lie at the core of my research: “Given that a problem exists, what are its underlying processes?” And, “Once identified, how can these processes be overcome?” One reason for this interest in intervention is my belief that a useful way to understand psychological processes and social systems is to try to change them. We also are interested in how and when seemingly brief interventions, attuned to underlying psychological processes, produce large and long-lasting psychological and behavioral change.
The methods that my lab uses include laboratory experiments, longitudinal studies, content analyses, and randomized field experiments. One specific area of research addresses the effects of group identity on achievement, with a focus on under-performance and racial and gender achievement gaps. Additional research programs address hiring discrimination, the psychology of closed-mindedness and inter-group conflict, and psychological processes underlying anti-social and health-risk behavior. -
Joseph M. DeSimone

BioJoseph M. DeSimone is the Sanjiv Sam Gambhir Professor of Translational Medicine and Chemical Engineering at Stanford University. He holds appointments in the Departments of Radiology and Chemical Engineering with a courtesy appointment in Stanford’s Graduate School of Business.
The DeSimone laboratory's research efforts are focused on developing innovative, interdisciplinary solutions to complex problems centered around advanced polymer 3D fabrication methods. In Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, the lab is pursuing new capabilities in digital 3D printing, as well as the synthesis of new polymers for use in advanced additive technologies. In Translational Medicine, research is focused on exploiting 3D digital fabrication tools to engineer new vaccine platforms, enhanced drug delivery approaches, and improved medical devices for numerous conditions, with a current major focus in pediatrics. Complementing these research areas, the DeSimone group has a third focus in Entrepreneurship, Digital Transformation, and Manufacturing.
Before joining Stanford in 2020, DeSimone was a professor of chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and of chemical engineering at North Carolina State University. He is also Co-founder, Board Chair, and former CEO (2014 - 2019) of the additive manufacturing company, Carbon. DeSimone is responsible for numerous breakthroughs in his career in areas including green chemistry, medical devices, nanomedicine, and 3D printing. He has published over 350 scientific articles and is a named inventor on over 200 issued patents. Additionally, he has mentored 80 students through Ph.D. completion in his career, half of whom are women and members of underrepresented groups in STEM.
In 2016 DeSimone was recognized by President Barack Obama with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the highest U.S. honor for achievement and leadership in advancing technological progress. He has received numerous other major awards in his career, including the U.S. Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award (1997); the American Chemical Society Award for Creative Invention (2005); the Lemelson-MIT Prize (2008); the NIH Director’s Pioneer Award (2009); the AAAS Mentor Award (2010); the Heinz Award for Technology, the Economy and Employment (2017); the Wilhelm Exner Medal (2019); the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award (2019 U.S. Overall National Winner); and the Harvey Prize in Science and Technology (2020). He is one of only 25 individuals elected to all three branches of the U.S. National Academies (Sciences, Medicine, Engineering). DeSimone received his B.S. in Chemistry in 1986 from Ursinus College and his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1990 from Virginia Tech. -
Jens Hainmueller

BioJens Hainmueller is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at Stanford University and holds a courtesy appointment in the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He is also the Faculty Co-Director of the Stanford Immigration Policy Lab that is focused on the design and evaluation of immigration and integration policies and programs.
His research interests include immigration, statistical methods, political economy, and political behavior. He has published over 40 articles, many of them in top general science journals and top field journals in political science, statistics, economics, and business. He has also published three open source software packages and his research has received awards and funding from the Carnegie Corporation, the Russell Sage Foundation, the Robin Hood Foundation, the National Science Foundation, the Swiss SNF, the American Political Science Association, Schmidt Futures, the Society of Political Methodology, the National Bureau of Economic Research, and the Midwest Political Science Association.
Hainmueller received his PhD from Harvard University and also studied at the London School of Economics, Brown University, and the University of Tübingen. Before joining Stanford, he served on the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. -
Andrew Hall

BioAndrew Hall is a Professor of Political Science and, by courtesy, a Professor of Political Economy at the Graduate School of Business. He is the co-director of the Democracy & Polarization Lab and a Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. Currently, Hall’s research group is focused on understanding how to preserve democracy and safely administer elections in the time of COVID-19, how to reduce or manage political polarization, and how state and local governments in the United States can become more dynamic and better able to grow, build, and innovate.

Michael Hannan
StrataCom Professor in Management, Emeritus
BioMichael Hannan is the Stratacom Professor of Management Emeritus in the Graduate School of Business and Professor of Sociology Emeritus in the School of Humanities and Sciences. He is also Professor of Organisation Theory, Durham University Business School.
He received his PhD in sociology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1970. He came to Stanford as Assistant Professor of Sociology in 1969, moved to Cornell in 1984 where he was the Scarborough Professor of Social Sciences, and returned to Stanford in 1991.
His major research interests include categories in markets, organizational ecology, sociological methodology, and formal sociological theory. His current theoretical research applies dynamic logics to organization theory. His current empirical research investigates the emergence of organizational categories and the implications of category membership for organizational identity in several domains, including winemaking in the Italian regions of Piedmont and Tuscany as well as Alsace in France.
Professor Hannan has published more than 100 articles in scholarly journals. Two of his books have received best book awards from the American Sociological Association. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, has been a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences, the Netherlands Institute of Advanced Study, and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, and he received a Guggenheim fellowship. -
Mike Harmon

BioMike Harmon is the Managing Partner of Gaviota Advisors, LLC, in Manhattan Beach, CA, where he advises and invests in small to medium sized companies. Prior to that, he spent 21 years as an investment professional in the Special Situations and Global Principal Groups at Oaktree Capital Management in Los Angeles. There he executed private equity and special situations transactions involving over 50 companies. Prior to that, Mr. Harmon held positions with CS First Boston, Price Waterhouse, and Society Corporation. Over the course of his career, Mr. Harmon has served as a member of the Board of Directors for 20 organizations in a broad range of industries and causes. He currently serves as a Board member for KCRW Radio, a non-profit media organization based in Santa Monica. He also serves as a Lecturer at Stanford Graduate School of Business and a Guest Lecturer at Harvard Business School in the areas of private equity, negotiation, and financial restructuring. He holds an M.B.A., with distinction, from Harvard Business School and a B.A., with distinction, in Economics from McGill University.

On Leave from 08/16/2020 To 08/15/2021BioDan Iancu is an Associate Professor of Operations, Information and Technology at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. His research interests lie at the interface of operations, finance, and risk management, and have both theoretical and applied components. Dan's work is focused on developing new tools for dynamic optimization under uncertainty and prescriptive analytics, and applying them to study operational and contracting problems in complex value chains. An area of particular focus in his recent work has been the design of better procurement, payment, and financing solutions in global supply chains, where material and financial flows carry both immediate and long-term impact on the lives of millions of people, and on the environment.

BioHugh Keelan is an Lecturer in Management at Stanford Business School. He teaches and mentors MBA and MSx students in courses including Leadership Laboratories, Leadership Fellows, Interpersonal Dynamics, and Paths to Power. He also teaches and coaches executives in programs run by the Executive Education team at Stanford Business School.

Charles Lee
Moghadam Family Professor
BioCharles M. C. Lee is the Moghadam Family Professor of Management and Professor of Accounting at the Graduate School of Business (GSB), Stanford University. (https://www.gsb.stanford.edu/faculty-research/faculty/charles-m-lee)
Professor Lee studies the effect of human cognitive constraints on market participants and other factors that impact the efficiency with which market prices incorporate information. He has published extensively in leading academic journals in accounting, finance, and economics, on topics that include behavioral finance, financial statement analysis, market microstructure, equity valuation, quantitatve investing, and security market regulation.
From 2004 to July 2008, Dr. Lee was Managing Director at Barclays Global Investors (BGI; now Blackrock). As Global Head of Equity Research and Co-Head of North America Active Equities, he led the firm’s world-wide active equity research team and was jointly responsible for its North American active equity business. During his tenure, BGI had over $300 billion in active equity asset under management. He joined Stanford GSB as Visiting Professor in July 2008 while continuing to serve as an exclusive senior consultant to BGI, and became a full-time faculty member in July 2009.
Dr. Lee has received numerous honors and awards, including the Notable Contribution to Accounting Literature prize and twelve school- or national-level Teaching Excellence Awards. Most recently, he received first place in the Q Group’s 2018 Roger F. Murray Prize research competition, the 2017 Stanford GSB Distinguished Teaching Excellence Award for the MBA program, and the 2017 AAA Innovation in Financial Accounting Education Award. He has been the Presidential Scholar of the AAA, and recipient of the Stanford University Asian American Faculty Award for Outstanding Achievements and Service to the University and to the Asian American Community.
Professor Lee has been either Editor or Associate Editor of a number of academic journals, including: The Accounting Review, the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Accounting Research, the Journal of Accounting and Economics, the Review of Accounting Studies, Management Science (Finance), and the Financial Analysts Journal.
Professor Lee received his BMath from the University of Waterloo (1981), and his MBA (1989) and PhD (1990) from Cornell University. He has been a faculty member at the Michigan Business School (1990-95) and the Johnson Graduate School of Management, Cornell University (1996-2004). From 1995-96 he was Visiting Economist at the New York Stock Exchange. At Cornell he held the Henrietta Johnson Louis Professorship in Management and was Director of the Parker Center for Investment Research.
Prior to entering academic life, he spent five years in public accounting, the last three in the National Research Department of KPMG, Toronto, Canada. He holds a Certificate in Biblical Studies from Ontario Theological Seminary, and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.

William Meehan

BioWilliam F. Meehan III is the Raccoon Partners Lecturer in Strategic Management at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business and Senior Partner Emeritus of McKinsey & Company.
As a faculty member of the Center for Social Innovation and Public Management Program, he has taught the popular course “Strategic Leadership of Nonprofit Organizations and Social Ventures” for 20 years; developed a pioneering course, “Private Equity in Frontier Markets; ” and continues to teach Managing Difficult Conversations” and Social Ventures Practicum.” As a Faculty Director, he helped launch the Stanford Institute for Innovation in Developing Economies (SEED). Earlier, was instrumental in creating the Center for Social Innovation at the Stanford GSB.
In addition, at Stanford, he has advised the Stanford Board of Trustees and President on strategy and governance. He is currently a founding member and vice-chair of the Natural Capital Advisory Council; a Special Advisor to the Stanford Initiative in Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI); and a Special Advisor to the Knight-Hennessy Scholars. Previously he was a founding member of the Advisory Council to the Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society (PACs) and the Arts Advisory Council.
In 2014, he received the Excellence in Leadership Award from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
His recent book, co-authored with Kim Starkey Jonker, Engine of Impact: Essentials of Strategic Leadership in the Nonprofit Sector, engineofimpact.org, is a bestseller in its field. Previously, Jonker and Meehan have published a range of articles on non-profits and philanthropy in the Stanford Social Innovation Review and are currently columnists for forbes.com.
Previously, he was a Board Member and Special Advisor to King Philanthropies; and a Board Member of GiveDirectly, which is pioneering the use of digital cash transfers to alleviate extreme poverty. He is also a Life Governor of the San Francisco Symphony; Chair Emeritus of Guidestar; a member of the North American Council of Ashoka, and a member of Positive Coaching Alliance’s National Advisory Board. He has also advised, pro bono, innumerable nonprofit leaders, Boards, and organizations.
Previously, he was Chair of the United Way of the Bay Area, a member of the Board of Fordham Prep, the National Academy of Sciences’ Board on Science, Technology and Economic Policy (STEP) and the California Roundtable. He was also a member of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival Endowment Board and, earlier, its Board.
Mr. Meehan retired in December 2008 after over 30 years at McKinsey & Company where his focus was working with chief executives on strategy, organization and leadership, including mentoring many new CEOs in shaping their leadership agendas. In addition to his service to clients, he held many leadership roles with the Firm. As a member of the Shareholders Council, McKinsey’s Board, he was Chair of the Client Committee and Chair of the McKinsey Investment Office, which oversees more than $8 billion in investments. He was also Vice-Chair of the Senior Partners Review Committee, founder and leader of the Private Equity Practice; Chair of the West Coast Practice, and Managing Director of the San Francisco Office.
He is a former Director of Juniper Networks and Westward Leaning and currently a Director of Big Switch. -
Paul Milgrom

BioPaul Milgrom is the Shirley and Leonard Ely professor of Humanities and Sciences in the Department of Economics at Stanford University and professor, by courtesy, in the Stanford Graduate School of Business and in the Department of Management Sciences and Engineering. Born in Detroit, Michigan on April 20, 1948, he is a member of both the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a winner of the 2008 Nemmers Prize in Economics, the 2012 BBVA Frontiers of Knowledge award, the 2017 CME-MSRI prize for Innovative Quantitative Applications, and the 2018 Carty Award for the Advancement of Science.
Milgrom is known for his work on innovative resource allocation methods, particularly in radio spectrum. He is coinventor of the simultaneous multiple round auction and the combinatorial clock auction. He also led the design team for the FCC's 2017 incentive auction, which reallocated spectrum from television broadcast to mobile broadband.
According to his BBVA Award citation: “Paul Milgrom has made seminal contributions to an unusually wide range of fields of economics including auctions, market design, contracts and incentives, industrial economics, economics of organizations, finance, and game theory.” As counted by Google Scholar, Milgrom’s books and articles have received more than 80,000 citations.
Finally, Milgrom has been a successful adviser of graduate students, winning the 2017 H&S Dean's award for Excellence in Graduate Education. -
Dale Miller

BioProfessor Miller’s research focuses on various aspects of social and group behavior. Long interested in social norms, he has investigated the processes underlying the development, transmission, and modification of group norms. He has been especially interested in the emergence and perpetuation of social norms that lack broad support. A second focus of his research is the origins of people’s commitment to social justice and the role that justice plays in social life. He has also studied and written on the sources and cures of cultural conflict.
Professor Miller has served on the editorial board of several scientific journals and currently serves on the editorial board of several scientific journals and currently serves on the editorial boards of the Social Justice Research, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and Psychological Inquiry. He has received numerous awards and has been a Visiting Fellow at both the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (Stanford) and the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton).
At Stanford University since 2002, he is the Class of 1968 / Ed Zschau Professor of Organizational Behavior. He currently teaches the MBA course on Critical Analytical Thinking. He also is the Faculty Director of Stanford’s Center of Social Innovation. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research deals with how people address threats to the self in interpersonal situations: How they avoid feeling prejudiced, how they construe other people's behavior to make to their own look good, how they deal with dissonance, how they affirm a threatened identity, how they resent the goodness of others when it makes them look bad, etc. I study these issues in the context of social norms, the self, and morality, broadly defined.

Balaji Prabhakar

BioPrabhakar's research focuses on the design, analysis, and implementation of data networks: both wireline and wireless. He has been interested in designing network algorithms, problems in ad hoc wireless networks, and designing incentive mechanisms. He has a long-standing interest in stochastic network theory, information theory, algorithms, and probability theory.

Stefan Reichelstein
William R. Timken Professor in the Graduate School of Business, Emeritus
BioStefan Reichelstein is known internationally for his research on the interface of management accounting and economics. Much of his work has addressed issues in cost- and profitability analysis, decentralization, internal pricing and performance measurement. His research projects have spanned analytical models, empirical work and field studies. Reichelstein’s papers have been published consistently in leading management and economic journals. Insights from his research have been applied by a range of corporations and government agencies. In recent years, Reichelstein has also studied the cost competitiveness of low-carbon energy solutions, with a particular focus on solar PV and carbon capture by fossile fuel power plants.
Stefan Reichelstein received his Ph.D. from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in 1984. Prior to that, he completed his undergraduate studies in economics at the University of Bonn in Germany. Over the past 30 years, Reichelstein has served on the faculties of the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley, the University of Vienna in Austria, and the Stanford Graduate School of Business. His teaching has spanned financial and managerial accounting courses offered to undergraduate, MBA, and doctoral students. In recent years, he has introduced new courses on Sustainability and Clean Energy at the Stanford Business School. Reichelstein’s research has been supported by the National Science Foundation and a range of private foundations; several of his papers have won “Best-Paper” awards. Reichelstein serves on the editorial boards of several journals; he is also currently an editor of the Review of Accounting Studies and Foundations and Trends in Accounting. Until 2010, he served as the Department Editor for Accounting at Management Science. Professor Reichelstein has been a consultant to select companies and non-profit organizations. He has received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Fribourg (2008) and Mannheim (2011). In 2007, Reichelstein was appointed a Honorar-Professor at the University of Vienna. -
Kevin Schulman

BioDr. Schulman was appointed as Professor of Medicine, Associate Chair of Business Development and Strategy in the Department of Medicine, Director of Industry Partnerships and Education for the Clinical Excellence Research Center (CERC) at the Stanford University School of Medicine, and, by courtesy, Professor of Economics at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business in June, 2018. He is the Founding Faculty Director of the Master of Science in Clinical Informatics Management (MCiM) Program in the Stanford School of Medicine.
Dr. Schulman’s research interests include organizational innovation in health care, health care policy and health economics. With over 300 original articles, 100 review articles/commentaries, and 40 case studies/book chapters, Kevin Schulman has had a broad impact on health policy (h-index = 69). His peer-reviewed articles have appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, and Annals of Internal Medicine. He is a member of the editorial/advisory boards of the American Heart Journal, Health Policy, Management and Innovation (www.HMPI.Org), and Senior Associate Editor of Health Services Research.
Prior to coming to Stanford, Dr. Schulman served as a Professor of Medicine at Duke University, directed the Health Sector Management Program at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business for a dozen years, created and directed the Duke University Master’s of Management in Clinical Informatics Program, and served as a Visiting Professor and Visiting Scholar at Harvard Business School.
He is a co-founder of Bivarus (exit January, 2018), co-founder and Managing Member of Faculty Connection, LLC., and is a Board Member of Grid Therapeutics.
He is an elected member of ASCI and AAP.
