    BioDr. Laura Hack is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Director of Novel & Precision Neurotherapeutics at the Stanford Center for Precision Mental Health and Wellness. Dr. Hack's translational research program focuses on identifying bioclinical subtypes of depression and comorbid stress-related disorders and testing mechanistically-guided treatments for these subtypes. Dr. Hack studies treatments spanning repurposed medications, such as pramipexole and guanfacine, neuromodulation techniques, ketamine, MDMA, and psilocybin.

    Dr. Hack directs the Stanford Translational Precision Mental Health Clinic (STPMHC), a cutting-edge consultation clinic for patients with a primary diagnosis of depression and comorbid anxiety disorders. Providers in the clinic integrate objective measures with a patient's history and presentation to inform treatment considerations and provide insights into the biological basis of a patient's condition. These measures, which may also help reduce self-blame and foster motivation to pursue recommended treatments, include the investigational use of clinical circuit scores derived from functional magnetic resonance imaging, symptom questionnaires, objective neurocognitive assessments, pharmacogenomic testing, and laboratory work. Patients and their referring doctors receive a detailed report with an explanation of the findings and the implications for treatment.

    Additionally, as Deputy Director of the Precision Neuromodulation Clinic (PNC) within the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, she specializes in delivering novel treatments, including repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and ketamine, to patients suffering from treatment-resistant depression and comorbid stress-related disorders.

    BioDr. Francois Haddad, MD is a Clinical Professor of Medicine that specializes in the field of cardio-vascular imaging, pulmonary hypertension, advanced heart failure and transplantation. Dr. Haddad has over 18 years of practice in the field of cardiology. He directs Stanford Cardiovascular Institute Biomarker and Phenotypic Core Laboratory dedicated to translational studies in cardiovascular medicine. The laboratory focuses on (1) identifying early biomarkers of heart failure and aging, (2) bioengineering approaches to cardiovascular disease modeling and (3) novel informatic approach for the detection and risk stratification of disease. He is involved is several precision medicine initiatives in health including the Project Baseline, the Integrated Personalized Omics Profiling Initiative, the Athletic screening program at Stanford and the Strong-D cardiac rehabilitation initiative in individuals with diabetes mellitus.

    BioLindsey Haddock, MD, MAEd, is a geriatrician and clinician-educator with a master's degree in education. Her research in medical education focuses on learning in the clinical workplace and evaluation of workplace-based assessments. She is the co-director of Primary Care and Population Health's Quality Education Scholarship Training program (QuEST), and the associate program director of the fellowship in Geriatrics. She works clinically in Stanford Senior Care Clinic and the inpatient geriatrics service.

    BioDr. Kurt Hafer is a board-certified physician and Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) practicing Primary Care Internal Medicine exclusively at Stanford Concierge Medicine.

    Dr. Hafer grew up in Chapel Hill, NC and attended Pomona College, where he received his undergraduate degree in Psychology. After completing post-baccalaureate pre-medical coursework at the University of Michigan (UM) in Ann Arbor, he worked as a neuro-endocrine peptide researcher at UM.

    In 1999, Dr. Hafer graduated from The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed a Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC) in San Jose in 2002. Between 2002 to 2012 he was a Teaching Attending Physician at SCVMC as well as an adjunct Stanford physician, training medical students and residents in Internal Medicine.

    Dr. Hafer joined Stanford in 2012 as the founding Medical Director of the Stanford Primary Care, Portola Valley Clinic -- Stanford's first new primary care clinic in many years. His five years of leadership at the Portola clinic included incorporating the latest technologies into primary care, adopting active population health panel management, LEAN management practices, embedded specialists and evidence-based, best-care practices as a viable model for the future of Stanford Primary Care.

    In January 2017, Dr. Hafer joined Stanford Concierge Medicine as Medical Director. In addition to caring for his patients, his duties include directing the clinic and expanding clinic offerings in mental health, wellness, and piloting Primary Care Genetics and Pharmacogenomics screening programs as a test bed for Stanford Primary Care.

    While at Stanford, Dr. Hafer has served as a lecturer for the American College of Physician's Internal Medicine Maintenance of Certification Course held in San Francisco, and has been a Reviewer for the American College of Physicians on multiple projects. He has served on numerous Stanford Healthcare committees and worked with teams on numerous projects, including Stanford's Primary Care 2.0 Redesign, Hypertension Center of Excellence Clinical Integration Team, The Virtual Hypertension Monitoring Project, and Stanford's Primary Care Precision Health program design team. He has directed pilots of TeleHealth phone and video visits, integration of specialty care MDs into our primary care clinics. He led a successful Clinical Effectiveness Leadership Training (CELT) project using clinical pharmacists embedded in primary care clinics to more effectively manage diabetes and high blood pressure between MD visits. He has also served as the Physician Leader for Stanford's Realizing Improvement through Team Empowerment (RITE) Quality Improvement Program.

    He currently serves as a Physician Member and Chair (2023, 2024) of the Global Executive Services (GES) Network Steering Committee, part of the Vizient University Health System Consortium, a national group of ~200 members of academic medical centers with Executive Health or Concierge Medicine services.

    When not caring for patients, Dr. Hafer enjoys spending time outdoors with family and friends. He is married to a Stanford University History Professor, has a daughter who graduated from Stanford and UCLA Medical School (now a resident at UCSF), as well as a son who is completing a masters degree in computer science at Stanford. He is an avid lifelong cyclist (road and MTB, logging up to 8k miles annually), hiker, has a passion for tinkering with vintage Datsuns and enjoys wearing vintage watches.

    Dr. Hafer believes that a combination of truly knowing his patients as individuals, excellent patient-physician communication, and comprehensive preventive care allows him to provide exceptional care for his patients.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy laboratory is focused on understanding the cellular mechanisms which mediate end-organ failure in pediatric sepsis. Our current work focuses on determining the role of altered mitochondrial dynamics in sepsis-induced multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Specifically, we focus on understanding the mechanisms that mediate derangements in mitochondrial fission and autophagy in sepsis.

    BioJens Hainmueller is the Kimberly Glenn Professor of Political Science and Director of Graduate Studies in Stanford University’s Department of Political Science. He co-directs the Stanford Immigration Policy Lab and is a Faculty Affiliate at the Stanford Center for Causal Science, the Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, and the Europe Center. He is also a member of the Maternal & Child Health Research Institute at Stanford’s School of Medicine.

    Hainmueller’s research spans statistical methods, causal inference, immigration, and political economy, and he has published nearly 70 articles with over 40,000 citations. Many of his works appear in top journals, including Science, Nature, and PNAS, as well as leading field journals in political science, statistics, economics, and business.

    He has developed widely adopted statistical methods—such as synthetic control methods, entropy balancing, Average Marginal Component Effects, and GeoMatch algorithms—and created several open-source software packages that support empirical research across disciplines. At Stanford, he teaches courses on causal inference and data science.

    Hainmueller’s contributions have earned him prestigious awards, including the Gosnell Prize for Excellence in Political Methodology, the Warren Miller Prize, the Robert H. Durr Award, and the Emerging Scholar Award from the Society of Political Methodology. He is an Andrew Carnegie Fellow, an elected Fellow of the Society of Political Methodology, and holds an honorary degree from the European University Institute (EUI).

    He earned his PhD from Harvard University, with additional studies at the London School of Economics, Brown University, and the University of Tuebingen. Before joining Stanford, he was a faculty member at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy primary area of scholarly and clinical interest is the pathogenesis of problem behaviors shown by individuals diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), particularly those with neurogenetic forms of IDD, such as fragile X syndrome, Cornelia de Lange syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome. My work aims to both advance understanding of these disorders and to identify effective new treatment approaches for pediatric and adult patient populations by state-of-the-art methodologies, such as brain imaging, eye tracking and functional analysis to determine how environmental and biological factors affect the development of aberrant behaviors in these syndromes. The end goal of my research is to create patient-specific methods for treating the symptoms of these disorders.

    BioMeghan Halley, PhD, MPH is Assistant Professor of Pediatrics (Research) in the Center for Biomedical Ethics at Stanford University School of Medicine. With training in medical anthropology, public health and health services research, her scholarship draws on multidisciplinary theoretical and methodological approaches to examine ethical, legal, social and policy questions arising in clinical and translational research. Her areas of expertise include the ethics of new genomic technologies, normative frameworks for integrating research and clinical care, challenges and opportunities in patient and community engagement, and the epistemic and ethical implications of valuing new health interventions.     The primary objective of this project is to use advanced, multi-modal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, analyses of X chromosome parent-of-origin and cognitive-behavioral assessment to elucidate the effects of monosomy and X-linked imprinting on neurodevelopment and neural function in a large cohort of young girls with Turner syndrome, pre-estrogen replacement.

    BioDr. Han is a board-certified neurosurgeon with fellowship training in neuro-oncology. He is also a clinical associate professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford University School of Medicine and chief of neurosurgery at Palo Alto VA Medical Center.

    Dr. Han diagnoses and treats a wide range of conditions, including brain tumors, pituitary tumors, spinal tumors, and degenerative spinal disorders. He is passionate about caring for underserved populations, as well as educating and mentoring the next generation of neurosurgeons.

    Dr. Han’s academic and research interests include brain mapping, advancing diagnostic methods and treatments for brain tumors, and improving the quality of neurosurgical care. He has conducted several clinical trials to determine the safety and effectiveness of specific treatments for different tumors affecting the central nervous system.

    Dr. Han has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles in prestigious journals, including Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuro-Oncology, and the Journal of Neurosurgery. He also serves as a reviewer for many professional publications.

    Dr. Han is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and the Society for Neuro-Oncology. He serves as an executive committee member and abstract reviewer for annual conferences in several of these organizations.

I have developed various statistical methods to analyze high-dimensional data to identify genetic and environmental risk factors and their interactions for complex disease.

    1. The molecular basis for diseases in which the pathway of transcription-coupled DNA repair is defective, including Cockyne syndrome (CS) and UV-sensitive syndrome (UVSS). Patients are severely sensitive to sunlight but get no cancers. See Hanawalt & Spivak, 2008, for review.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsHis research and clinical work focuses on the development of interventional techniques for fetal and neonatal treatment of congenital heart disease, pulmonary, vascular physiology, and the neurologic impact of open-heart surgery. He developed and pioneered the “unifocalization” procedure, in which a single procedure is used to repair a complex and life-threatening congenital heart defect rather than several staged open-heart surgeries as performed by other surgeons.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsA bad latch means maternal excruciating pain, ineffective milk transfer with subsequent weight loss, hypoglycemia, higher risk of hyperbilirubinemia and dehydration fever.All of the above led to early cessation of breastfeeding; 46% of mothers who initiate exclusive breastfeeding stop within the first 12 weeks because of difficult latch. I developed a latch tutorial focusing on step-by step-in striations for achieving an effective, non-painful latch.

His clinical practice includes both inpatient palliative care consultation as well as ambulatory care in palliative medicine. His research and educational interests include symptom management and utilizing media to grow palliative care services and education.

    BioDr. Sigurdis Haraldsdottir, M.D., Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. She received her medical degree and master's degree in medical sciences from the University of Iceland. She did her Internal Medicine training at Boston University Medical Center and training in Medical Oncology at the Ohio State University, before joining the faculty at Stanford. Her clinical and research focus is in gastrointestinal malignancies with a focus on mismatch repair deficient cancers, particularly colorectal cancer. She is conducting population-based research on Lynch syndrome - an inherited cancer syndrome, and recently completed a nation-wide study on Lynch syndrome in Iceland. She received her Ph.D. in Medical Sciences in 2017 from the University of Iceland. Her interests also focus on investigating colorectal cancer genomics, and their effect on outcomes and treatment implications.

    BioKate Hardy is a California Licensed Psychologist who has specialized in working with individuals with psychosis for over 20 years in both research and clinical settings. Dr. Hardy received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom. She has worked in specialist early psychosis services in both the UK and the US, including UCSF’s Prodrome Assessment Research and Treatment (PART) program, where she completed her post-doctoral fellowship, and as Clinical Director for the Prevention and Recovery from Early Psychosis (PREP) program. Dr. Hardy is the co-director for the INSPIRE clinic at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, Stanford University and has significant experience in providing CBTp to individuals with early psychosis, and those at risk of developing psychosis, in both individual and group settings and integration of this clinical intervention to broader systems and staff teams. Dr. Hardy is also involved in the implementation of national strategies to increase dissemination of early psychosis models with the aim of bringing these cutting edge treatments to a broader population and is the co-editor of the book Intervening Early: A team approach.

    Dr. Hardy is also the director of INSPIRE training and within this role has led multiple trainings and workshops in CBTp to a wide variety of audiences including community clinicians, psychiatrists, and families, and provides ongoing supervision and consultation in this approach. INSPIRE training offers training in evidence based interventions for psychosis to providers across diverse settings. In 2024 Dr. Hardy became president elect for IEPA: Intervening Early in Mental Health.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am interested in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications and augmented reality applications in medicine. These include abdominal, breast and musculoskeletal imaging, which require development of faster, quantitative, and more efficient MRI methods that provide improved diagnostic contrast compared with current methods. My work includes novel excitation schemes, efficient imaging methods and reconstruction tools and augmented reality in medicine.

    BioDr. Stephanie Harman is a palliative care physician and Clinical Professor of Medicine. She graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and went on to complete a residency in Internal Medicine at Stanford and a Palliative Care fellowship at the Palo Alto VA/Stanford program. She then joined the faculty at Stanford. She co-founded the Palliative Care Program at Stanford Health Care in 2007 and served as Clinical Chief of the Section of Palliative Care in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health from 2016 - 2022. She is the inaugural Associate Chair for Women in Medicine for the Department of Medicine and the Director of the Stanford Leadership Development Program, a joint program between Stanford Health Care and the School of Medicine for emerging leaders. A 2017 Cambia Health Foundation Sojourns Scholar Leader Awardee, she has a passion for leadership development and has built a Women Leaders in Academic Medicine (WLAM) program in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health, which is now in its 6th year with 28 women leaders.     BioMary Elizabeth Hartnett, MD, is the Michael F. Marmor, M.D. Professor in Retinal Science and Diseases and is a Professor of Ophthalmology at Stanford University. Dr. Hartnett is the director of Pediatric Retina at Stanford University and principal investigator of a retinal angiogenesis laboratory, in which she studies causes and treatments for diseases including retinopathy of prematurity and age-related macular degeneration. She created the first-ever academic textbook on the subject, Pediatric Retina, in its third edition, which has proven to be an invaluable resource for residents and ophthalmologists internationally.

    Dr. Hartnett’s NIH-funded laboratory of vascular biology and angiogenesis has studied mechanisms causing pathology in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Her work in AMD has been to understand the mechanisms involved in activation and invasion of choroidal endothelial cells anterior to the RPE in order to maintain vasculature that is physiologic and not damaging beneath the RPE. Her lab has elucidated environmental stressors that lead to scarring in the macula for which no vision improvement is currently possible. The goal is to find methods to prevent the scarring.

    Her lab’s work in ROP provided the proof of concept to regulate an angiogenic signaling pathway by inhibiting VEGF to facilitate intraretinal neovascularization as well as to inhibit abnormal extraretinal neovascularization and reduce retinal destruction used in previous treatments. Her work has been translated through clinical trials to lead to new treatments for severe ROP and has represented a paradigm shift in the understanding and treatment of severe ROP.

    Dr. Hartnett has received numerous awards, including the Weisenfeld Award, the highest award for clinician-scientists given by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), in 2018, and is an ARVO Gold Fellow. She received the 2019 Paul Kayser/Retina Research Foundation Global Award, the Macula Society’s 2016 Paul Henkind Award and its 2019 Arnall Patz Medal, the Paul Kayser/RRF Global Award from the PanAmerica Society, and the 2021 Suzanne Veronneau-Troutman Award, the most prestigious award from Women in Ophthalmology. In 2022, she was one of six at the University of Utah to receive a distinguished research award, for Pediatrics and Ophthalmology.

    Dr. Hartnett's prolific publication record includes 227 articles in peer-reviewed journals and over 40 book chapters. She has delivered numerous national and international invited lectures. Her long list of professional committee work includes serving as chair of the Publications Committee of ARVO, as a mentor for the ARVO Leadership Development Program, and in leadership positions internationally as chair of the research advisory committees for The Macula Society and the Jack McGovern Coats Disease Foundation as well as Chair of the Credentialing Committee for The Retina Society. She reviews manuscripts for more than 20 eye and science journals and serves on the editorial boards of PlosOne, Molecular Vision, and the American Journal of Ophthalmology. Dr. Hartnett is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a Silver and Gold Fellow of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (FARVO).

    BioDr. Sejal Tyle Hathi is a board-certified physician and nationally recognized public health leader with more than 15 years of experience advancing physical and mental health, women's rights, and public policy in the United States and globally.

    She serves as the 4th permanent Director of the Oregon Health Authority, appointed to the cabinet position by Governor Tina Kotek and unanimously confirmed by the Oregon Senate to oversee all health care and public health services, policies, and programs for the State of Oregon. Most recently, she served as New Jersey's deputy health commissioner and state health officer -- a position she held after two years as the Biden White House's Senior Policy Advisor for Public Health, where she led several presidential priorities across mental health, climate and health, public health preparedness, and supply chain policy. She has also held joint faculty appointments as an assistant professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine & Bloomberg School of Public Health.

    Dr. Hathi grew up in Fremont, California and received her B.S. with honors from Yale University and her M.D. / M.B.A. from Stanford University, where she studied as a Harry S. Truman Scholar and Paul & Daisy Soros Fellow. She completed her clinical training in internal medicine and primary care at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital.

    BioNancy A. Haug, PhD is Adjunct Clinical Professor and Addiction Medicine fellowship program faculty in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. She currently leads didactics and a journal club for Addiction Medicine fellows, and teaches a postdoctoral seminar on ethics and legal issues for the Clinical Psychology Fellowship Program. Dr. Haug's primary academic affiliation is Professor of Psychology at Palo Alto University, where she teaches, advises and supervises doctoral students in the PGSP-Stanford PsyD Consortium. Dr. Haug previously served as faculty and attending psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California San Francisco, and taught in the University of California, Berkeley Alcohol & Drug Studies program. She obtained her PhD in Clinical Psychology and Behavioral Medicine at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology at Loyola University, Maryland. She completed a clinical internship and postdoctoral fellowship at University of California, San Francisco and San Francisco General Hospital in public service and minority mental health.

    Dr. Haug is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA) Ethics Committee and formerly served as a member of the California Psychological Association Ethics Committee. She is a Fellow and Member-at-Large for Practice in the Society of Addiction Psychology (APA, Division 50). Dr. Haug is on the editorial board of the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs and the Journal of Addictive Diseases. She was funded by SAMHSA for a practitioner-education initiative to expand training for evidence-based addiction treatment. Dr. Haug leads the Harm Reduction and Addiction Treatment Laboratory at PAU with current research studies on the implementation of evidence-based practices in addiction treatment, harm reduction for substance use, cannabis vaping and psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy.

    Dr. Haug has been licensed as a psychologist in California since 2004, is board certified in addiction psychology by American Board of Professional Psychology, and has an independent practice in Los Gatos, CA. She has clinical expertise in treating substance misuse and eating disorders using motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness-based therapies including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.     BioKristina Elizabeth Hawk, MS MD PhD is a Nuclear Medicine Physician and Neuroradiologist. As a physician scientist, integrated MD/PhD training helped build a foundation to explore translational research efforts, using a full and intricate understanding of the research process, and the developed ability to understand, discuss and teach new emerging concepts. Dr. Hawk’s dissertation in Neuroscience focused on the regulation of Nitric Oxide Synthase in the dorsal and ventral striatum, exploring the neurochemical role of nitric oxide producing interneurons, and their ability to coordinate dopaminergic and glutamatergic signaling in areas of the brain relevant to cognition and motivated behavior.

    Eager to expand her passion into the field of Medical Radiation Physics, she also completed a separate Masters degree in Medical Radiation Physics. This provided her with in depth training of how therapeutic and diagnostic instruments use both ionizing and non-ionizing radiation in the clinical setting. She then completed her Medical Doctorate and Diagnostic Radiology Residency at the University of Southern California (USC), learning the art of medicine while serving the diverse population at Los Angeles County Hospital.

    Dr. Hawk completed clinical fellowship requirements in Nuclear Medicine at USC, and is now Board Certified by the American Board of Nuclear Medicine. She also completed a Neuroradiology fellowship at USC, and is Board Certified the American Board of Radiology. She served as both the Chief Resident and Chief Neuroradiology Fellow.

    Dr. Hawk has held multiple local and national leadership positions, including positions in the American College of Radiology (ACR), the American College of Nuclear Medicine (ACNM) and the Society of Nuclear and Molecular Medicine (SNMMI). Dr. Hawk is an editorial board member of the Journal of the American College of Radiology (JACR). She has served as the Vice-Chair for Education for the Nuclear Medicine Resident Organization of the ACNM, and the Educational Liaison for the Resident and Fellow Section of the ACR. Currently, she serves on the national ACR Commission for Women and General Diversity as well as the ACR Commission on Nuclear Medicine. Dr. Hawk also sits on the ACR Council Steering Committee.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy area of research is health services researcher focusing on surgical quality measurement and policy. I have a background and training in epidemiology coupled with my leadership roles in surgical quality measurement. My expertise and extensive experience in evaluation of surgical quality process and outcome linkage has impacted national policy and changed guidelines. We performed a comprehensive evaluation of the Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) implementation using national VA data. Defining robust metrics of surgical quality that are actionable and can lead to sustained improvement in our field are of utmost importance. I also have experience with risk prediction modeling for surgical patients. Our Decision Support for Safer Surgery study developed models of real-time risk prediction for major complications and prospectively validated our models in patients and with expert surgeons. We were able to discern where computational risk prediction has added value and where it falls short. We currently have a national study investigating readmissions following major surgical procedures to identify opportunities for improving care and reducing costs.

    BioI am a brain tumor neurosurgeon, treating patients with malignant and benign tumors, including gliomas, brain metastases, meningiomas, and schwannomas. I direct the Stanford Brain Tumor Center and the Stanford Brain Metastasis Consortium, collaborative unions of physicians and scientists looking to improve our understanding and treatment of brain tumors. My laboratory seeks greater understanding of the mechanisms driving tumorigenesis and disease progression in malignant brain tumors. We study how rare cancer cell populations survive and migrate in the brain, inadvertently supported by native brain cells. We develop novel cerebrospinal fluid-based biomarkers to track brain cancer treatment response, relapse, and neurotoxicity. Our bedside-to-bench-to-bedside research model builds on a foundation of generously donated patient samples, where we test mechanisms of brain cancer growth, develop novel pre-clinical models that reliably recapitulate the human disease, and facilitate clinical trials of new treatments for patients with brain cancer.

He collaborates with campus laboratories to help develop new biomarker and treatment technologies. He is the former director of the Stanford Oncology Fellowship Program.

    BioI am a neuroscientist and Principal Investigator of the Stanford Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) Lab in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences as well as Director of Neuroimaging for the Autism and Developmental Disorders Research Program at Stanford. My innovative research studies clinical aspects of cognitive and behavioral neuroscience, with a special focus on examining the neural circuitry associated with important brain-behavior relationships that may underlie different psychological and psychiatric domains in autistic children, adolescents, and adults. The ultimate goal of this research is to improve our understanding of the development of different cognitive and behavioral skills in order to develop mechanistically driven interventions that will improve precision medicine for mental health. Biologically based diagnosis and treatment are extremely limited for most psychological and psychiatric conditions but also critically needed to increase early identification and improve treatment outcomes, especially for neurodevelopmental disorders in which early intervention is the most beneficial. My early career research has primarily focused on clinical neuroscience using neuroimaging (e.g., MRI & EEG) to examine the effects of different drugs and behavioral interventions on the brain, especially for developing biomarkers for improving treatment planning and monitoring biological changes in response to single dose and clinical trials.

    My primary contributions to science thus far fall within these major categories: 1) identifying the neural correlates of individual differences in cognition and behavior, 2) developing new interventions and investigating the neurobiological substrates of response to treatment, 3) examining different factors that contribute to brain development, 4) summarizing and increasing accessibility to autism-related research, and 5) methods development for neuroimaging studies. My earliest research investigated the neurobiology of alexithymia, dyslexia, and stress using structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging to test theories of the mechanisms that contribute to differences in cognition and behavior. My subsequent dissertation research, in which I began to focus on neurodevelopmental disorders, examined the neural correlates of response to beta-blockers in autistic adults and also assessed the contribution of cerebellar circuits to the autism phenotype. During my postdoctoral training, I have developed further skills for working with children in multiple clinical research settings, especially for using advanced neuroimaging approaches to examine important brain-behavior relationships. This includes a recent K99/R00 from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NCT04278898 & NCT05664789) that will assess the neurobiology of restricted and repetitive behaviors in autistic children and examine the efficacy and target engagement of a novel nutritional supplement and investigational drug, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), in the brain.     BioShireen Heidari, MD is a palliative care and family medicine physician. She works as part of the inpatient palliative care consult team providing symptom management and support for patients and families facing any stage of a serious illness. Dr. Heidari is the program director for the Stanford University Hospice and Palliative Fellowship. She previously served as the clinical lead for the Stanford site of the PERIOP-PC Study, collaborating with the surgical department to evaluate the impact of early palliative care support for patients and family members preparing for major upper gastrointestinal cancer surgery.

    Dr. Heidari has written about the importance of human connection and stigma around healthcare workers seeking help for their mental health in The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, and The Intima. She hopes that by sharing her own story, she can continue being part of this conversation as we advocate for culture change in medicine and more sustainable practice.

    Before moving to northern California, Dr. Heidari attended medical school at Boston University, completed her residency at UC San Diego where she served as chief resident, followed by palliative fellowship at UCLA. Outside of her clinical and mentorship work, she is likely writing creatively or outside with her husband chasing their dogs.
