Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy laboratory's expertise in cardiovascular phenotyping has led to the development of mouse models of congenital heart disease that recapitulate abnormal loading conditions on the heart. We have used these models to advance our understanding of the mechanisms of right heart failure in children and adults with congenital heart disease with the long term goal of identifying noninvasive diagnostic tools to better assess right ventricular health and to develop right ventricle specific therapeutics.

Masters Student in Epidemiology and Clinical Research, admitted Autumn 2021BioRuby E. Reed ("Lillie") (any pronouns) is a medical student and Masters in Epidemiology & Clinical Research student from Greenville, North Carolina. Lillie aims to become a child and adolescent psychiatrist, focusing on trauma and trauma-related disorders. Passionate about psychotherapy, community health work, writing and the humanities, Lillie sees storytelling and the importance of empowerment as the threads between her interests. She hopes to build a career that empowers people and communities to own and tell their stories for healing, strength and community good.
Prior to medical school, Lillie had a career in global health, focused largely on gender-based violence, mental health, and youth empowerment in low-income urban communities. Lillie's has worked on clinical and community health projects in Colombia, India, Kenya, Malawi, Mexico, Rwanda, South Africa, the United States and Zambia, as well as with the World Health Organization Office of the Americas on global and regional policy projects on mental health and violence against women and children.
At Stanford, Lillie's research has focused on gender-based violence (GBV), and she has led two large research projects focusing on the impact of COVID-19 on gender-based violence. One such project examined GBV among adolescent girls in Kenya, while the other focused on domestic violence survivors in Santa Clara County Latino communities. Lillie was also Community Outreach Manager of one of Stanford's Cardinal Free Clinics, and created and implemented the first social needs screening and referral system for the clinics, which remains in use. She has also partnered extensively with local organization Next Door Solutions, a domestic violence organization in San Jose, helping with numerous projects, including helping to launch their Teen Club program, and conducted her Masters thesis doing a community-partnered project with this organization. Lillie has also advocated for social justice and health equity initiatives as the lead of Stanford's Underrepresented Minority Medical Alliance, or SUMMA, and as the co-lead and advocacy chair of Medical Students with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses and LGBTQMeds, respectively. Lillie has been very involved in the arts and humanities at Stanford, including sharing stories at numerous events and showcases, TA-ing a writing workshop, co-leading TalkRx (a student oral storytelling program), and participating in Oasis -- a Pegasus Writing Group for students from underrepresented and marginalized communities. Lillie was an inaugural Global Health Medical Student Research Fellow, and spent a research year working with Dr. Xin She and nestglobal on a community-partnered participatory intervention within refugee shelters in Tijuana. Lillie also worked with local staff to develop an arts and storytelling program in the shelters, and volunteered with Refugee Health Alliance providing psychological first-aid in the refugee shelters.
Clinically, Lillie is focused on psychiatry. Her continuity clinic spanned 2 years providing therapy under the supervision of Dr. Hilit Kletter, PhD in the Stress and Resilience Clinic, a pediatric PTSD clinic. She also worked with Dr. Debra Kaysen, PhD, and Diana Arenas, MS (Refugee Health Alliance) to provide Written Exposure Therapy (WET) within refugee shelters in Tijuana. -
Risheen Reejhsinghani
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Cardiovascular Medicine
BioRisheen Reejhsinghani obtained her medical degree in Mumbai, India, followed by an internal medicine residency at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Boston, MA and cardiology fellowship at Baystate Medical Center/Tufts University School of Medicine, where she served as one of the chief fellows. She subsequently completed an advanced echocardiography fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco, and is board certified in echocardiography, general cardiology, and nuclear cardiology.
Dr. Reejhsinghani practices as a general cardiologist in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, where she also serves as the associate director for the hospital-based consultative cardiology service. As a clinical cardiologist, she believes strongly in the tenets of evidence-based practice, diagnostic cognizance, and patient education. She also has a specific interest in the burgeoning field of Cardio-Rheumatology, focused on cardiac diseases among patients with rheumatologic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, and ankylosing spondylitis, among others. Her clinical research in this area has focused on the evaluation of structural cardiac disease and diastolic dysfunction in ankylosing spondylitis patients, primarily using echocardiography.
Dr. Reejhsinghani has an academic focus in medical education, and believes that instilling a love for bedside medicine and the physical exam is the soundest way to empower future generations of learners. To this end, she received additional training in clinical teaching and simulation at the University of California, San Francisco, and has worked extensively on curriculum and course design. She currently serves as the associate program director of the cardiovascular medicine fellowship at Stanford, and is an associate course director for the Year 1 Practice of Medicine Course at the Stanford University medical school. Dr. Reejhsinghani also enjoys writing, particularly about medical education and has written articles for international newspapers, among other publications. -
Alexis Reeves
Postdoctoral Scholar, Epidemiology
BioAlexis is a Propel postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health in the School of Medicine with Dr. Michelle Odden’s lab. Her research is broadly focused on the causes and consequences of racial disparities in accelerated aging. She is particularly interested in the interplay of structural and interpersonal racism, and the psychobiological mechanisms in which they produce early health declines in minoritized populations. Her work to date has focused on the health of Black women as they enter into life-stages, such as the midlife menopausal transition, where cardio-metabolic risk is high. Alexis also has a strong interest in causal inference, and applies causal inference theory and methods to these areas of research to mitigate and quantify bias.

Matthew F. Reeves
Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor, Obstetrics & Gynecology
BioDr. Matthew Reeves is the Executive Director and founder of the DuPont Clinic, a center providing patient-centered abortion care in all trimesters. With the team at the DuPont Clinic, Dr. Reeves has worked to re-envision the patient experience, create a new patient flow without a waiting room, develop new shortened protocols for later abortion, improve nurse-administered moderate sedation techniques, and introduce new and redesigned gynecologic instruments. Dr. Reeves also serves on the board of directors of DKT International, a social marketing organization that provided over 44 million couple-years of contraception in over 25 countries and is now the sole distributor for Ipas aspirators and Sino-Implant II. Previously, he was Medical Director of the National Abortion Federation where he worked to improve the quality of abortion care across North and South America. From 2010-2014, Dr. Reeves was the Chief Medical Officer of WomanCare Global where his work focused on expanding use of manual uterine aspiration and introducing mifepristone and levonorgestrel implants to new markets. Throughout his career, Dr. Reeves has worked on clinical research, primarily in the areas of post-abortal intrauterine contraception and improvements in abortion service delivery. In addition to this appointment at Stanford, he currently has an appointment as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Reeves attended Harvard Medical School and completed residency in obstetrics & gynecology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He then completed the fellowship in Clinical Ultrasound at UCSF followed by the Fellowship in Family Planning at the University of Pittsburgh.

David Rehkopf

BioI am a social epidemiologist and serve as an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health and in the Department of Medicine in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health. I joined the faculty at Stanford School of Medicine in 2011.
I am Director of the Stanford Center for Population Health Sciences. In this position, I am committed to making high-value data resources available to researchers across disciplines in order to better enable them to answer their most pressing clinical and population health questions.
My own research is focused on understanding the health implications of the myriad decisions that are made by corporations and governments every day - decisions that profoundly shape the social and economic worlds in which we live and work. While these changes are often invisible to us on a daily basis, these seemingly minor actions and decisions form structural nudges that can create better or worse health at a population level. My work demonstrates the health implications of corporate and governmental decisions that can give the public and policy makers evidence to support new strategies for promoting health and well-being. In all of his work, I have a focus on the implications of these exposures for health inequalities.
Since often policy and programmatic changes can take decades to influence health, my work also includes more basic research in understanding biological signals that may act as early warning signs of systemic disease, in particular accelerated aging. I examine how social and economic policy changes influence a range of early markers of disease and aging, with a particular recent focus on DNA methylation. I am supported by several grants from the National Institute on Aging and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities to develop new more sensitive ways to understand the health implications of social and economic policy changes. -
James H Reich

BioI attended U.C. Berkeley for my B.S. degree, the University of Colorado for my MD and U.C. Davis for my psychiatric residency and did a fellowship in Psychiatric Epidemiology at Yale. I have been faculty at the University of Iowa, Harvard and Brown. I have published over a hundred papers in peer reviewed journals, mostly in the areas of anxiety and personality. I also founded a medical society, the Association for Research in Personality Disorders (ARPD).
Currently I am in private practice in San Francisco and teach at Stanford and UCSF. My treatment approaches for psychotherapy include CBT and mindfulness. I also do psychopharmacology which I have taught UCSF for many years.
I am also a board certified forensic psychiatrist in private practice focusing largely on civil cases. -
Daryn Reicherter
Clinical Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioDr. Reicherter the director of the Human Rights in Trauma Mental Health Laboratory.
He has expertise in the area of cross-cultural trauma psychiatry, having spent more than a decade dedicated to providing a combination of administrative and clinical services in trauma mental health locally and internationally. He is on the List of Experts for the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia and for the United Nations’ International Criminal Court. He is on the Fulbright Specialists Roster for his work in international trauma mental health. He is a Senior Fellow at the Center for Innovations in Global Health at Stanford University. He has created and cultivated new clinical rotations for residency education and medical school education in the community clinics that he operates. And he has created new opportunities for resident, medical student, and undergraduate education in Global Mental Health.
He has also been involved in the creation of clinical mental health programs for underserved populations in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is the Faculty Adviser for the Stanford’s Free Clinic Mental Health Program.
After receiving degrees in Psychobiology and Philosophy from the University of California at Santa Cruz, Dr. Reicherter completed his doctorate in medicine at New York Medical College. He completed internship and residency and served as Chief Resident at Stanford University Hospitals and Clinics. -
Richard J. Reimer, MD

A primary interest of our lab is to understand how nerve cells make and recycle neurotransmitters, the small molecules that they use to communicate with each other. In better defining these processes we hope to achieve our long-term goal of identifying novel sites for treatment of diseases such as epilepsy and Parkinson Disease. In our studies on neurotransmitter metabolism we have focused our efforts on transporters, a functional class of proteins that move neurotransmitters and other small molecules across membranes in cells. Transporters have many characteristics that make them excellent pharmacological targets, and not surprisingly some of the most effective treatments for neuropsychiatric disorders are directed at transporters. We are specifically focusing on two groups of transporters vesicular neurotransmitter transporters that package neurotransmitters into vesicles for release, and glutamine transporters that shuttle glutamine, a precursor for two major neurotransmitters glutamate and GABA, to neurons from glia, the supporting cells that surround them. We are pursuing these goals through molecular and biochemical studies, and, in collaboration with the Huguenard and Prince labs, through physiological and biosensor based imaging studies to better understand how pharmacological targeting of these molecules will influence neurological disorders.
A second interest of our lab is to define mechanism underlying the pathology of lysosomal storage disorders. Lysosomes are membrane bound acidic intracellular organelles filled with hydrolytic enzymes that normally function as recycling centers within cells by breaking down damaged cellular macromolecules. Several degenerative diseases designated as lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs) are associated with the accumulation of material within lysosomes. Tay-Sachs disease, Neimann-Pick disease and Gaucher disease are some of the more common LSDs. For reasons that remain incompletely understood, these diseases often affect the nervous system out of proportion to other organs. As a model for LSDs we are studying the lysosomal free sialic acid storage disorders. These diseases are the result of a defect in transport of sialic acid across lysosomal membranes and are associated with mutations in the gene encoding the sialic acid transporter sialin. We are using molecular, genetic and biochemical approaches to better define the normal function of sialin and to determine how loss of sialin function leads to neurodevelopmental defects and neurodegeneration associated with the lysosomal free sialic acid storage disorders. -

Cybele A. Renault, MD, DTM&H, FIDSA
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Infectious Diseases
BioDr. Renault has devoted her career to caring for vulnerable patient populations, both domestically and overseas. She completed her medical school and residency training at the University of Chicago, caring for underserved patients on Chicago's South Side, followed by a Chief Resident year at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, the public hospital serving the uninsured in Chicago. She began her career in global health as an Infectious Diseases fellow at Stanford, validating low-cost HIV diagnostics in Burkina Faso, and providing clinical service and teaching in India and Zimbabwe as a fellow, and later in Thailand, Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya as one of our Infectious Diseases faculty. Her clinical work is focused on caring for our veteran population, working to empower veterans to engage in their care, often in the setting of significant mental illness.
Dr. Renault is most passionate about medical education and program development to combat global antimicrobial resistance through antimicrobial stewardship, to create opportunities for the Internal Medicine residents centering on caring for vulnerable patient populations, and to develop impactful and sustainable programs in collaboration with our low- and middle-income partners for our Center for Innovation in Global Health. She served as Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program for 4 years prior to transitioning to her current role as Program Lead for Global Health, for which she leads the Global Health Track for the Internal Medicine residency program and develops global health initiatives for the Department of Medicine. She co-founded and has been director of the Stanford 2-week intensive global health course since its inception in 2012, she has structured trainee and faculty rotations based on evolving needs of our partner sites in Uganda, Rwanda, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, she is the faculty lead for the ID/antimicrobial stewardship partnership between Stanford and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, and she is leading Stanford's Internal Medicine virtual case-based education initiative to support our newest medical school partner in Negele Arsi, Ethiopia.
Dr. Renault strives to augment Stanford's contributions and support for underserved patient populations in the United States. She established resident rotations in Shiprock, New Mexico and Chinle, Arizona through the Indian Health Service, and she is Faculty Advisor for the Internal Medicine Health Equity, Advocacy and Research concentration in the residency program. She also aspires to improve resources for women physicians. In 2016, Dr. Renault established the GME Women in Medicine Leadership Council, with the intention of creating community and encouraging conversations about professional and personal life decisions as women in the field of medicine. She is passionate about mentoring through sharing personal experiences, creating an environment that encourages reflection, and building skills to address challenges unique to women in medicine.
In 2022, in recognition of her passion for medical education and her success in program development, Dr. Renault was asked to join the leadership at Palo Alto Veterans Health Care System as Deputy Associate Chief of Staff for Education. In this role, she works with rotation directors to optimize their respective rotations to offer robust educational opportunities for trainees across specialties who are rotating at the Palo Alto VA. -
Zachary T Renfro

Masters Student in Epidemiology and Clinical Research, admitted Autumn 2023BioZachary studied biology at the University of Arkansas where he researched the impact of temperature on macrophage cytokine production across animal species as well as the neural basis of saccadic mislocalization. After graduation, he worked at the Arkansas Department of Health where he developed and implemented Arkansas' first plan to eliminate tuberculosis. Additionally he researched the contribution of epigenetic regulation on the susceptibility, development, and maintenance of chronic pain at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and participated in the front line response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
At Stanford, he is enrolled in the MD and MS in epidemiology and clinical research programs. His current research interests include emerging infectious diseases, immunological response to infection, and the impact of climate change on infectious disease. -
Agnes Reschke

Fellow in PediatricsBioAgnes Reschke, MD is a clinical fellow in the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, Stanford University School of Medicine. She obtained her bachelor of science and honors from Villanova University and after her family moved to Kentucky, went on to medical school at University of Kentucky College of Medicine. She completed a pediatric residency at Connecticut Children's Medical Center and during that time, focused on a clinical research project evaluating a proposed association between domestic radon levels and the development of sarcoma. Dr. Reschke ultimately came to Lucile Packard Children's Hospital for her pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship and during that time, discovered the emerging field of onco-critical care. Her fellowship research is in the lab of Tim Cornell, chief of pediatric critical care at Stanford. She is working to apply a real-time assay to measure cytokines in subsets of pediatric oncology patients to guide immunomodulatory therapies. By gaining a better understanding of these patients’ immune responses in real time, she believes that we will open the door for precision immunomodulatory therapy to treat critically ill patients, especially those experiencing sepsis or cytokine release syndrome. After completion of her hematology/oncology fellowship, Dr. Reschke will be pursuing a pediatric intensive care fellowship with the hope of becoming a leader and pioneer in onco-critical care.

She helped validate both a novel sigma-1 radiotracer, [18F]FTC-146, for its ability to detect molecular markers of neuropathic pain non-invasively and a [64Cu]hCD19-mAb radiotracer for imaging therapy-induced B cell depletion. She is well-versed in pharmacokinetic modeling, receptor occupancy studies, autoradiography, and cell-based assays. Moreover, is an expert in PET/MR imaging of neonatal mice. -

BioI have a B.S. in Biology, M.Sc. in Immunology and Infectious diseases, Ph.D. in Microbiology. I am currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Stanford University School of Medicine, working with Dr. Jason Andrews at the new Stanford Pandemic Preparedness Hub, a fellowship I was awarded at the end of 2022. As part of a pandemic preparedness, We are tytrying to understand the potential viruses at risk of pandemic spread. Using disease modeling, epidemiological, and phylogenetic analysis, we study the genomic evolution and transmission dynamics of H5N1 avian influenza A after 2020.
I am in my third postdoctoral year at Stanford and completed the first two years with Dr. Desiree LaBeaud. I have a Ph.D. in Microbiology, with an emphasis in Virology, and a Master’s in Infectious Diseases. . My Ph.D. was conducted in Brazil, under the supervision of Dr. Betânia Drumond, and contemplated the virological and epidemiological aspects of yellow fever (YF) outbreak in Minas Gerais/BR in 2017-2018, combining laboratory, clinical, and data analysis (publications: DOI 10.1126/science.aat7115; DOI 10.1371/journal.pntd.0006538; DOI 10.1128/jcm.00254-22; DOI 10.3390/vaccines7040206; DOI 10.1186/s12985-019-1277-7). I came to Stanford University for my first postdoc with Dr. Desiree LaBeaud. For two years, I led an international NIH R01 project investigating the dynamics of the biggest YF outbreak in Brazil, including the description of a new syndrome, Late-relapsing hepatitis after yellow fever (DOI 10.3390/v12020222), and risk factors for severe YF. I was also involved in other projects regarding SARS-CoV-2 variants and disease severity in infants (DOI 10.3389/fmed.2022.896352), Rift Valley fever virus epidemiology in humans and animals in Kenya (DOI 10.1371/journal.pgph.0000505), and dengue virus evolution in Africa (ongoing Ph.D. candidate mentorship).
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we also supported the Brazilian Ministry of Health with the SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis in human samples and also in the investigation of the SARS-CoV-2 RNA in surfaces of density public areas of Belo Horizonte. Since Nov/2018 I had been an editor in the journal Docência do Ensino Superior (RDES / GIZ / UFMG) and in Jan/2020 I became Editor-in-Chief. -

BioDr. Rhee is a physiatrist and a clinical assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation. For patients with spine and musculoskeletal conditions, he focuses on providing exceptional care emphasizing minimally invasive solutions designed to optimize symptom managementand patient function.
Building on his background in engineering and on his specialized medical training and experience, Dr. Rhee welcomes opportunities to combine medical, mechanical, and interpersonal approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of each patient. He offers a full range of treatment modalities, including epidural steroid injection procedures, sacroiliac and facet joint injections, trigger point and soft tissue injections, orthopedic joint injections, and more. He also provides medial branch blocks and radiofrequency ablations, and performs electrodiagnostic studies.
Among the wide range of conditions that Dr. Rhee treats are bursitis, herniated discs, radiculopathy, sciatica, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and spondylosis. He also has treated many forms of joint and muscle pain: facet joint, back, neck, hip, and sacroiliac joint pain.
Dr. Rhee’s experience encompasses short-term and long-term care for both acute and chronic conditions, including musculoskeletal injuries, spinal problems, mixed spine-neck and spine-shoulder disorders, and peripheral damage. Many of the cases he treats are injury-related, while a significant number of others are associated with aging. Another portion of his patient population presents with conditions stemming from developmental anomalies.
Prior to joining Stanford Health Care, Dr. Rhee was in private practice in the Bay Area. Previously, he also served in the US Army as a troop medical clinic officer-in-charge and as a brigade surgeon.
Dr. Rhee is board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and a member of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, North American Spine Society, and Spine Intervention Society. -

Fauzia Riaz, M.D., M.H.S.

BioDr. Riaz is a medical oncologist specializing in breast cancer whose research focuses on novel therapeutics and approaches cancer care delivery for patients with breast cancer. She is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Riaz completed formal research training during her fellowship, through Yale University’s Advanced Health Sciences Research program. This included training in biostatistics, research methodology, and health policy, ultimately culminating in the completion of a Master of Health Sciences. As faculty, she is an active member of the Stanford Breast Oncology Clinical Research Group, and currently serves as the Stanford site principal investigator and sub-investigator for several ongoing breast cancer clinical trials.

Our interests are in identifying specializations associated with mechanotransduction and synaptic transmission leading to the amazing sensitivities of the auditory system. We are also interested in the developmental process, particularly in how development gives insight into repair and regenerative mechanisms.

Joshua Richards
Clinical Assistant Professor, Orthopaedic Surgery
BioDr. Richards is board certified in Orthopedic Surgery and has a Certified Additional Qualification for Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery. For over 15 years he has specialized in the treatment of ligamentous, joint, tendon, nerve and bone injuries of the Hand, Elbow, Wrist and Shoulder.
He has served the Bay Area community as a UCSF Assistant Professor as a volunteer educator at San Francisco General Hospital, by teaching and treating complex trauma at the Alameda County Level One Trauma Center-Highland Hospital, and through various volunteer roles on athletic fields around the Bay.
Dr. Richards obtained his Bachelors Degree in Neurobiology at Cornell University, his Masters of Public Health at the Columbia University, and his Medical Degree at New York Medical College.
He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the San Francisco Orthopedic Residency Program. He then returned to Cornell University’s Hospital for Special Surgery to complete his fellowship training in hand, upper extremity, and microvascular surgery.
Until joining Stanford in 2023, he had been in private practice in the East Bay since 2006. He has volunteered locally in a variety of organizations and internationally on several continents. -
Jenae Aesha Richardson
Clinical Assistant Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioDr. Jenae Richardson is a Clinical Assistant Professor and a CA Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the INSPIRE Clinic in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. She also works in the acute psychiatric inpatient units at Stanford Hospital. She specializes in utilizing evidence-based treatments (EBTs) to treat individuals with psychosis and has worked with this population across inpatient and outpatient settings. She is passionate about improving the dissemination and implementation of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for psychosis (CBTp), and at the INSPIRE Clinic, she leads CBTp trainings for mental health professionals and provides CBTp to individuals with psychosis. Dr. Richardson completed her pre-doctoral internship at the University of Arizona’s Early Psychosis Intervention Center and her postdoctoral fellowship at Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. She obtained her doctorate in clinical psychology from Long Island University Post and conducted research exploring barriers to implementing CBTp in the United States.
