Peter K. Jackson
Professor of Microbiology and Immunology (Baxter Labs) and of Pathology
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Jackson’s lab studies how primary cilia organize hormone, metabolite, and growth factor signaling in metabolic tissues and how their disruption causes obesity and diabetes. A second focus is defining the KRAS driven secreted factor networks that rewire the tumor microenvironment in lung and pancreatic cancers to promote immune evasion and therapeutic resistance. This work is revealing new secreted drug targets and combination strategies for precision oncology and metabolic disease.

Rob Jackson

BioRob Jackson and his lab examine the many ways people affect the Earth. They produce basic scientific knowledge and use it to help shape policies and reduce the environmental footprint of global warming, energy extraction, and other environmental issues. They're currently examining the effects of climate change and drought on old-growth forests. They are also working to measure and reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the Global Carbon Project (globalcarbonproject.org), which Jackson chairs. Examples of new research Rob leads include establishing a global network of methane tower measurements across the Amazon and more than 100 sites worldwide and measuring and reducing methane emissions and air pollution from oil and gas wells, city streets, and homes and buildings.
Rob's new book on climate solutions, Into the Clear Blue Sky (Scribner and Penguin Random House), was named a "Top Science Book of 2024" by The Times. As an author and photographer, Rob has published a previous trade book about the environment (The Earth Remains Forever, University of Texas Press), two books of children’s poems, Animal Mischief and Weekend Mischief (Highlights Magazine and Boyds Mills Press), and recent or forthcoming poems in the journals Southwest Review, Cortland Review, Cold Mountain Review, Atlanta Review, LitHub, and more. His photographs have appeared in many media outlets, including the NY Times, Washington Post, USA Today, US News and World Report, Science, Nature, and National Geographic News.
Rob won this year's Blue Planet Prize and is a recent Djerassi artist in residence, Guggenheim Fellow, and sabbatical visitor in the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. He is also a Fellow in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Geophysical Union, and Ecological Society of America. Christine Jacobs-Wagner
Dennis Cunningham Professor, Professor of Biology and of Microbiology and Immunology
BioChristine Jacobs-Wagner is a Dennis Cunningham Professor in the Department of Biology and the ChEM-H Institute at Stanford University. She is interested in understanding the fundamental mechanisms and principles by which cells, and, in particular, bacterial cells, are able to multiple. She received her PhD in Biochemistry in 1996 from the University of Liège, Belgium where she unraveled a molecular mechanism by which some bacterial pathogens sense and respond to antibiotics attack to achieve resistance. For this work, she received multiple awards including the 1997 GE & Science Prize for Young Life Scientists. During her postdoctoral work at Stanford Medical School, she demonstrated that bacteria can localize regulatory proteins to specific intracellular regions to control signal transduction and the cell cycle, uncovering a new, unsuspected level of bacterial regulation.
She started her own lab at Yale University in 2001. Over the years, her group made major contributions in the emerging field of bacterial cell biology and provided key molecular insights into the temporal and spatial mechanisms involved in cell morphogenesis, cell polarization, chromosome segregation and cell cycle control. For her distinguished work, she received the Pew Scholars award from the Pew Charitable Trust, the Woman in Cell Biology Junior award from the American Society of Cell Biology and the Eli Lilly award from the American Society of Microbiology. She held the Maxine F. Singer and William H. Fleming professor chairs at Yale. She was elected to the Connecticut academy of Science, the American Academy of Microbiology and the National Academy of Sciences. She has been an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 2008.
Her lab moved to Stanford in 2019. Current research examines the general principles and spatiotemporal mechanisms by which bacterial cells replicate, using Caulobacter crescentus and Escherichia coli as models. Recently, the Jacobs-Wagner lab expanded their interests to the Lyme disease agent Borrelia burgdorferi, revealing unsuspected ways by which this pathogen grows and causes disease -

BioMark Z. Jacobson’s career has focused on better understanding air pollution and global warming problems and developing large-scale clean, renewable energy solutions to them. Toward that end, he has developed and applied three-dimensional atmosphere-biosphere-ocean computer models and solvers to simulate air pollution, weather, climate, and renewable energy. He has also developed roadmaps to transition states and countries to 100% clean, renewable energy for all purposes and computer models to examine grid stability in the presence of high penetrations of renewable energy.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe study innate immunity and immune regulation of Plasmodium Falciparum malaria in children and pregnant women. Our work focuses on understanding how malaria shapes the immune state in individuals following repeated exposure. We are also testing novel interventions to enhance protective immunity against malaria in children via large, randomized controlled trials. Our work in malaria has been based in Eastern Uganda, where malaria transmission is among the highest in the world.

Abhi Jain
Clinical Assistant Professor, Radiology
BioDr. Jain is a neuroradiologist and a Certified Imaging Informatics Professional (CIIP) whose academic work bridges day-to-day neuroradiology practice with imaging informatics and clinically grounded artificial intelligence (AI).
His clinical research interests include quantitative imaging and radiomics in cerebrovascular disease, with particular emphasis on intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), and imaging biomarkers in the aging brain and neurodegeneration, including limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy (LATE).
His AI/informatics and quality-improvement interests include large language models (LLMs) for radiology reporting support and clinical decision support, with an emphasis on real-world evaluation and workflow integration.
His education interests focus on modern, technology-enabled neuroradiology teaching, including tailored language models and extended reality (XR; augmented/virtual/mixed reality) approaches to strengthen trainee learning. -
Rishee Jain

BioProfessor Jain's research focuses on the development of data-driven and socio-technical solutions to sustainability problems facing the urban built environment. His work lies at the intersection of civil engineering, data analytics and social science. Recently, his research has focused on understanding the socio-spatial dynamics of commercial building energy usage, conducting data-driven benchmarking and sustainability planning of urban buildings and characterizing the coupled dynamics of urban systems using data science and micro-experimentation. Lochlann Jain
Professor of Anthropology
BioJain is an award-winning author and Professor of Anthropology at Stanford University, Visiting Chair of Global Health and Social Medicine at King’ College London, and a Research Affiliate at VIAD, University of Johannesburg. His work aims to unsettle some of the deeply held assumptions about objectivity that underlie the history of medical research. Jain is the author of Injury (Princeton UP: 2006); Malignant: How Cancer Becomes Us (UC Press: 2013); and a book of drawings, Things that Art: A Graphic Menagerie of Enchanting Curiosity (U of Toronto Press: 2019).
Jain is currently working on two books. The first, supported by a Guggenheim Fellowship, develops the concept of The WetNet, which refers to fluid bonding among humans and animals in ways that create pathways for the transmission of pathogens. Specifically, mid-century bioscientific practices such as blood harvesting and transfusion, and vaccine development and testing involved exchanges in human and animal effluvia, the risks of which have largely been disavowed. Jain’s current book project elucidates the concept of The WetNet through a rigorous history of the hepatitis B virus and the development of the first hepatitis B vaccine.
The second project, “The Lung is a Bird and a Fish,” is a cultural history of drowning in prose and drawing. -
Shaili Jain, MD
Adjunct Clinical Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioDr. Jain is a board certified psychiatrist with specialty expertise in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), primary and mental health integrated care, and women’s health psychiatry. She is a former health services researcher, affiliated with the National Center for PTSD, who focuses on developing innovative ways to enhance the reach of mental healthcare in underserved populations with PTSD. Her work is widely accredited for elucidating the role of paraprofessionals and peers in the treatment of American veterans with PTSD.
She serves as the Psychiatry representative on Stanford's Executive Committee of the Association of Adjunct Clinical Faculty (AACF) and is also a council member for the Adjunct Clinical Faculty (ACF) council in Stanford's department of psychiatry. She is a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Jain is an internationally recognized leader in communicating to the public about trauma and PTSD. Her posts for her Psychology Today blog on PTSD, In the Aftermath of Trauma, have been viewed over 350,000 times. Sneha Shah Jain MD, MBA

BioDr. Sneha S. Jain is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University, where she specializes in general cardiovascular medicine and preventive cardiology. She co-founded and is the director of GUIDE-AI, which focuses on the development, responsible deployment, and pragmatic evaluation of AI tools to augment healthcare delivery and improve patient outcomes across the healthcare enterprise.
Dr. Jain completed her undergraduate studies in Economics at Duke University, graduating with distinction, before earning her MD from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and her MBA from Harvard Business School. She completed internal medicine residency training at Columbia/NewYork-Presbyterian, and fellowship training in cardiovascular medicine at Stanford University.

Siddhartha Jaiswal

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe identified a common disorder of aging called clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP). CHIP occurs due to certain somatic mutations in blood stem cells and represents a precursor state for blood cancer, but is also associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and death. We hope to understand more about the biology and clinical implications of CHIP using human and model system studies.

Branislav Jakovljević

BioMy research is highly interdisciplinary. I find it very rewarding to study performance in the context of visual arts, film and digital media, literature and poetry, critical theory, as well as larger social and historical processes. Most recently, I have been focusing on climate change and environmental justice. Over the past year, I have co-edited with my colleagues from TAPS Diana Looser and Matt Smith a two-part special issue of TDR: The Drama Review on performance and climate change. This research and teaching interest comes from my more long-term engagement with performance and politics.
My most recent monograph in English is Alienation Effects: Performance and Self-Management in Yugoslavia 1945-1991 (University of Michigan Press, 2016) which received the Joe A. Callaway Prize for the Best Book on Drama or Theater for 2016-17 and Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) Outstanding Book Award, 2017. It has been translated into Serbian (2019) and Slovenian (2021). I co-translated and edited Radomir Konstantinović’s book The Philosophy of Parochialism, a groundbreaking analysis of the relation of the national literature and the formation of totalitarian ideas and political practices in a small European nation during the first half of the 20th century (University Michigan Press, 2021). My most recent book project is The Performance Apparatus: On Ideological Production of Behaviors (forthcoming from University of Michigan Press), in which I investigate the relationship between performance art and theories of ideological formations from the 1970s until the present.
I hail from Yugoslavia, the country that was located in central and western Balkans, in southeastern Europe. There, I attended Drama Schools at universities in Skopje and Belgrade (present-day Northern Macedonia and Serbia, respectively). I worked as Dramaturg in professional theaters during and immediately after the completion of my BFA studies.
Most of my views on politics, ethics, justice, and the arts were informed by the unraveling of Yugoslavia in a series of bloody civil wars in the 1990s. I was active in anti-war movements before I left the country and remained active in pro-democracy publications in Serbia and the region of the former Yugoslavia. Some of these writings have been collected in the book Frozen Donkey and Other Essays (Smrznuti magarac i drugi eseji, Komuna Links, Belgrade 2017).
Both my MA and PhD are from the Department of Performance Studies at New York University. While pursuing my PhD, I was active in the New York downtown theater and alternative press scene in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In the subsequent years, I served on the board of Performance Studies international (PSi) and chaired the 19th PSi conference held at Stanford in June of 2013.
Before joining Stanford in 2006, I taught at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and University of Minnesota. In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate classes in my home department, over the years I served as Director of Undergraduate Studies, Director of Graduate Studies, and Chair (2015-2019). Some of the highlights from my tenure as Chair are: devising a strategic plan for the department that yielded the current structure of our undergraduate program, supervising the return of the department to the renovated Roble Gym, the establishment of Nitery Experimental Theater as the first fully student-run theater space on campus, working with the Dean’s office to set up Carl Weber graduate fellowships, and opening TAPS season-planning process to include all members of the department who are willing to participate (students, faculty, staff). -
Sajid Jalil
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Gastroenterology & Hepatology
BioDr. Jalil is a board-certified, fellowship-trained transplant hepatologist (liver doctor) and gastroenterologist at the Stanford Health Care Digestive Health Center in San Jose, California. He is also a clinical associate professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Jalil has extensive experience helping patients with a range of liver- and digestion-related conditions. He specializes in liver transplantation, and his other clinical interests include all forms of hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, fatty liver disease, polycystic liver disease, and primary sclerosing cholangitis (swelling and scarring of the bile ducts). He has also volunteered in initiatives to offer free colonoscopy and hepatitis B screenings to underserved ethnic populations.
His research interests include improving mental health by enhancing treatment access for patients with alcohol use disorder causing alcoholic liver disease. He has also studied swallowing problems, liver disease in pregnancy, living liver donation, and the use of artificial intelligence in treating nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and viral hepatitis. In addition, Dr. Jalil wrote a chapter on bile secretion and cholestasis (diminished bile flow) for the fifth edition of Yamada’s Textbook of Gastroenterology.
Dr. Jalil has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including World Journal of Hepatology, Liver Transplantation, and the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology. Additionally, he has served as a reviewer for Pancreatology and as an abstract reviewer for the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Physicians. He has presented his research at meetings and conferences worldwide on a range of topics, including the timing of pregnancy after liver transplantation.

Mehrnaz Nicole Jamali MD

BioDr. M. Nicole Jamali focus has been in leadership, scientific innovation and streamlining business ventures. Over the past 20 years since graduation from Stanford Internal Medicine Residency, she has held National Positions in AMA as Western Caucus Chair and Appointee to Joint Commission Board. She was reelected to Board of Joint Commission three terms for total of 9 years. She helped rewrite multiple TJC Standards including creation of the Stroke Center of excellence standards and annual "new ideas section of the board". At AMA she authored and passed multiple House rules on variety of subjects affecting thousands of providers and healthcare centers. Her experiences in private practice, group practice, Hospitalist, Insurance Directorship lead to multiple innovative projects including first e-prescription covering both meds and DME in 1999 titled eRemedy,. She then created the first wrong site surgery device which was patented. This project lead to creation of first Transplant App called TPOD which was then simplified to TAPP. It was beta tested in USC and perfected in UCSF Transplant.
Her work with various Insurance companies resulted in streamlined programs and teaching modules improving patient access to health care and millions of dollars in hospital savings of unnecessary admissions.
Her work in creation and streamlining and connecting with local Primary Care providers resulted in rapid expansion of the Hospitalist program of local Hospital by 300%
She is currently interested in Haptic and AI technologies in Medicine and providing 24/7 care to our veterans in remote locations or even the battlefield.
She is currently Clinical Associated Professor and the lead Hospitalist in the new Stanford Cardiovascular Hospitalist Program and enjoys the daily interaction with patients . She truly believes that her mission in life is to be at the bedside of ill patients. She treats them as one of her own family. It is not atypical for her to hand out her personal phone number to make sure they feel safe even when discharged. -

Safwan Jaradeh, MD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsClinical interests include autonomic disorders, small fiber neuropathies and the development of effective methods of testing and treating these disorders. Prior work has focused on small fiber painful and autonomic neuropathies; syndromes of orthostatic intolerance and syncope; gastrointestinal motility dysfunction; cyclic vomiting; protacted Gastroesophageal Reflux; non-allergic rhinitis syndromes; and the relationship between the autonomic nervous system and normal or abnormal sleep. Additional areas of interest include the neurology of phonation and swallowing disorders, and peripheral nerve injury and repair.

Thomas Jaramillo

BioRecent years have seen unprecedented motivation for the emergence of new energy technologies. Global dependence on fossil fuels, however, will persist until alternate technologies can compete economically. We must develop means to produce energy (or energy carriers) from renewable sources and then convert them to work as efficiently and cleanly as possible. Catalysis is energy conversion, and the Jaramillo laboratory focuses on fundamental catalytic processes occurring on solid-state surfaces in both the production and consumption of energy. Chemical-to-electrical and electrical-to-chemical energy conversion are at the core of the research. Nanoparticles, metals, alloys, sulfides, nitrides, carbides, phosphides, oxides, and biomimetic organo-metallic complexes comprise the toolkit of materials that can help change the energy landscape. Tailoring catalyst surfaces to fit the chemistry is our primary challenge.

Daniel Jarosz

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy laboratory studies conformational switches in evolution, disease, and development. We focus on how molecular chaperones, proteins that help other biomolecules to fold, affect the phenotypic output of genetic variation. To do so we combine classical biochemistry and genetics with systems-level approaches. Ultimately we seek to understand how homeostatic mechanisms influence the acquisition of biological novelty and identify means of manipulating them for therapeutic and biosynthetic benefit.

BioDr. Praveen Jayapal is a board-certified radiologist and Assistant Professor of Radiology at Stanford University, specializing in body imaging for both adult and pediatric patients, with a particular focus on MRI. His clinical expertise includes fetal imaging and pediatric musculoskeletal (MSK) imaging. Dr. Jayapal's primary practice is based at 450 Broadway Pavilion B in Redwood City, where he is dedicated to serving the underserved community through the Conrad 30 program. BioI am an assistant professor of political science at Stanford University where I am also a faculty affiliate with the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity and the Stanford Center for American Democracy. I received my PhD in political science from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and African American Studies from the University of South Carolina.
My research focuses primarily on the role identity plays in structuring political attitudes and behaviors in the U.S. I am especially interested in understanding how stigma shapes the politics of Black Americans, particularly as it relates to group members’ support for racialized punitive social policies. In other research projects, I examine the psychological and social roots of the racial divide in Americans’ reactions to officer-involved shootings and work to evaluate the meaningfulness of key political concepts, like ideological identification, among Black Americans.
My dissertation, "Policing Norms: Punishment and the Politics of Respectability Among Black Americans," was a co-winner of the 2020 Best Dissertation Award from the Political Psychology Section of the American Political Science Association. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Jeffrey led the multidisciplinary team from the Schools of Medicine, Engineering, and Genome Technology Center that invented the MagSweeper, an automated device that immunomagnetically captures live circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from cancer patient blood for single cell analysis or culture. Her lab also works on microfluidic technologies for tumor cell capture, characterization, and growth - with the goal of defining individual patient response to newer biologically-based cancer therapies.

BioAs founder and principal of Every Museum a Civic Museum, Sarah Jencks works with museum leaders educators to help them articulate their authentic civic missions and see the possibilities for igniting and enacting the collective impact of museum education in schools and in our democratic republic. Recent and current clients include the National Park Service’s Chesapeake Gateways network, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, the Museum of the City of New York, James Madison’s Montpelier, the Barack Obama Foundation, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, King’s Chapel, Made By Us, Thinking Nation, Preservation Maryland, and the Lincoln Presidential Foundation. She believes that every museum can and should be a civic museum. Jencks serves as co-chair of the Educating for American Democracy (EAD) Community Learning Partners task force, serves on the Democratic Knowledge Project’s EAD Advisory Committee, and is a volunteer leader and frequent speaker for the American Association for State and Local History and the American Alliance of Museums. She is a visiting professorial lecturer with the George Washington University Museum Studies program. For almost 15 years, Jencks was founding Director of Education and Interpretation at Ford’s Theatre, where she oversaw school and teacher programs as well as interpretive strategy and digital and on-site exhibitions. She previously taught middle-school history, English, and theater. She serves on the boards of the National Council for History Education and Literacy InterActives and holds an M.Ed. in School Leadership from Harvard University Graduate School of Education and an A.B. in American Civilization from Brown University.

Erik Allen Jensen
Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Neonatal and Developmental Medicine)
BioBronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a common and severe complication of very preterm birth. Dr. Jensen’s research seeks to improve the long-term respiratory health of premature infants through: (1) clinical and translational studies that aim to develop evidence-based strategies to prevent and treat BPD; (2) novel characterization of disease severity and phenotypes in BPD; and (3) application of health services research techniques to investigate the association between hospital-level factors and neonatal morbidity and mortality.
Dr. Jensen’s research is supported by grant funding from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and the American Lung Association (ALA). He is a member of the International BPD Collaborative and the International Neonatal Consortium (INC) BPD working group. -
Jorgen Arendt Jensen

BioI am a professor of Biomedical Signal Processing at the Department of Health Technology (DTU Health), Technical University of Denmark (www.dtu.dk). My main interests are the application of digital signal processing to medical ultrasound, especially synthetic aperture imaging, vector flow imaging, super-resolution, GPU-based beamforming and implementation, and ultrasound simulation.
I received the M.Sc. in electrical engineering in 1985, the Ph.D. in 1989 for work on deconvolution, and the Dr. Techn. degree in 1996 for my work on blood velocity estimation in the book: "Estimation of Blood Velocities Using Ultrasound, A Signal Processing Approach", which was published by Cambridge University Press in 1996. I have been a full professor at DTU since 1993, and I have been a visiting scientist at Duke University, North Carolina, Stanford University, California, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, all in the US. I became an IEEE Fellow in 2012.
I have founded and headed the Center for Fast Ultrasound Imaging (www.cfu.dtu.dk) since 1998. Currently, I am a visiting Professor in the Department of Radiology at Stanford University, CA, USA, courtesy of Professors Katherine Ferrara and Jeremy Dahl, until August 2026. I will be working here on our super-resolution method, SURE, using the Stanford large-element arrays for the acquisition of clinical data. I am also writing a book on advanced ultrasound imaging, drawing on my 40 years in the field.

As a practicing cytopathologist, I also have an interest in improving the fine needle aspiration biopsy diagnosis of breast lesions, again using immunohistochemistry and gene expression analysis as adjuncts to cytomorphology.

BioDr. Michael Jensen is a neurosurgeon at Stanford Health Care. He also serves as a clinical assistant professor and director of endoscopic spine surgery in the Department of Neurosurgery, Division of Spine Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Jensen specializes in endoscopic and minimally invasive spine surgery for degenerative conditions, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and spine-related pain, with experience in more than 2,000 procedures throughout his career. As Director of Endoscopic Spine Surgery at Stanford, he focuses on motion-preserving techniques that shorten recovery and restore function. He also employs advanced imaging and meticulous surgical planning to make spinal fusion safer and promote lasting healing. Dr. Jensen’s care philosophy emphasizes precision, collaboration, and open communication—ensuring that every patient understands their options and feels confident in their care.
As a physician-scientist, Dr. Jensen focuses his research on improving the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of spine care. He has studied how cost-sharing policies, treatment timing, and prescribing patterns affect outcomes for patients with neck and back pain. He has also explored the use of machine learning and predictive modeling to guide clinical decision-making in neurosurgery. Currently, Dr. Jensen works with the Endoscopic Spine Research Group to improve patient pain control and functional recovery after endoscopic spine surgery.
Dr. Jensen has presented his work at national meetings, including those of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the Society of Lateral Access Surgery. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in journals such as The Spine Journal, JAMA Network Open, and World Neurosurgery. His research spans clinical care, health economics, and translational science, reflecting his commitment to advancing neurosurgical practice and improving patient outcomes.

Hilary Jericho

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am a clinical associate professor of pediatric gastroenterology and the Inaugural Medical Director of the Celiac Disease Program at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford whose clinical practice and research have an emphasis on the diagnosis and management of celiac disease. I was appointed the Director of Pediatric Clinical Research at the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center in 2014. I am deeply involved in both local community and national professional societies serving as the Director of the Chicagoland Children’s Health Alliance (CCHA) endoscopy committee and am a member of the CCHA celiac committee, the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) celiac special interest group, CeliacKids (a pediatric multi-center celiac research focused collaborative), the Standards-Based Active Guideline Environment (a committee responsible for the establishment of guidelines for accommodating children with celiac disease within school settings across the United States), and the NASPGHAN Endoscopy committee. My clinical work and research focus on pediatric celiac disease (CeD) and have resulted in numerous publications, peer-reviewed articles, and book chapters. This research has also helped to establish myself as an expert in the field of pediatric celiac disease leading to invitations to speak and be a moderator at both local and national meetings, including the internationally attended University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center educational preceptorship programs, the NASPGHAN annual meeting and Beyond Celiac. I have additionally been called up to provide celiac specific journal reviews as well as expert opinions to leading publications, including US News and World Report, Reader’s Digest and Reuter’s. The current application builds logically on my prior work in the field of pediatric celiac disease for which I have successfully administered the projects (staffing, research coordination, budgeting, data analysis and manuscript creation). In summary, I have the expertise, leadership, training, and motivation necessary to successfully carry out the proposed research projects.

BioI am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Management Science & Engineering at Stanford University. I earned my Ph.D. in Operations Research at Columbia University, advised by Prof. Agostino Capponi, and completed my B.S. and M.A. in Mathematics at UCLA.
My research sits at the intersection of financial technology, market microstructure, and mechanism design. I study how financial markets function and how they can be redesigned for greater efficiency and fairness, with a particular focus on decentralized finance (DeFi) and blockchain-based trading. My work spans three areas:
Market microstructure — analyzing trading behavior and designing better financial markets.
FinTech and DeFi — examining how cryptographic tools and decentralized protocols reshape financial transactions.
Incentives in financial technology — addressing misalignments that emerge in crypto-finance and proposing mechanisms that improve adoption and efficiency.
I believe finance is a social science that benefits from active engagement with real markets. I work closely with both industry and regulators to ensure my research not only advances theory but also informs practice and policy in digital assets and financial technology. -

Can "Angela" Jiang

BioDr. Can "Angela" Jiang is a board certified family physician who enjoys caring for the whole family, from newborn care to geriatrics. She has special interests in women's health, adolescent health, pediatrics, and medical student education. She specializes in primary care procedures including gynecologic procedures.
Prior to medical school, Dr. Jiang was a high school biology teacher in Chicago with Teach for America and loves combining her passions for teaching and medicine on a daily basis at Stanford Family Medicine. Dr. Jiang also teaches residents at the Stanford Health Care-O'Connor Hospital residency program and is the director of the O’Connor-Stanford Leaders in Education Residency Program (OSLER). Dr. Jiang is also passionate about community outreach and works with the Stanford Youth Diabetes Coaches Program.
Outside of clinic, she enjoys hiking, reading, group fitness classes, traveling, and running after her two young kids. -
Nancy Jiang, MD

BioDr. Jiang is a board-certified, fellowship-trained laryngologist with Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical associate professor in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, Division of Laryngology at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Jiang completed a fellowship in laryngology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Jiang specializes in helping patients with all conditions affecting the throat and neck, including vocal cord disorders, hoarseness, chronic cough, and swallowing difficulties. She is skilled at treating even the most complex conditions using the latest techniques and advanced technology. Offering surgical and nonsurgical treatments, Dr. Jiang is passionate about tailoring each care plan to meet the needs of her patients.
Her research interests include outcomes in vocal fold paralysis caused by intubation and from unknown causes (idiopathic). She also studies practice patterns of otolaryngologists in the United States. She has evaluated the effectiveness of in-person versus telemedicine care in otolaryngology and the disparities in speech therapy for voice disorders among English-speaking and non-English-speaking patients. Dr. Jiang has also explored how using a digital otoscope can reduce the use of antibiotics in children with ear infections.
Dr. Jiang’s articles have appeared in many peer-reviewed publications, including Laryngoscope, Otology and Neurotology, and American Journal of Otolaryngology. She edited a chapter on gross and radiographic anatomy in Anesthesiology and Otolaryngology. She has also reviewed articles for Laryngoscope and Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology.
Dr. Jiang has presented her research findings in the United States and Canada. She has been invited to speak at dozens of conferences about a range of topics affecting the ears, nose, and throat. She has served as principal investigator on many studies, including how using artificial intelligence can improve patient care and how to reduce opioid use following otolaryngology surgery.

Shirley Jiang, MD

BioDr. Shirley Jiang is a fellowship-trained, board-certified allergist and immunologist with the Stanford Health Care Allergy, Asthma, and Immunodeficiency Clinic in Atherton. She is also a clinical assistant professor of allergy and immunology in the Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy & Critical Care Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Jiang diagnoses and treats a wide range of conditions, including allergies, asthma, eczema, hives, and immunodeficiencies. She specializes in food allergies, medication allergies such as those to penicillin and other antibiotics, and chemotherapy allergies. For each of her patients, she offers a comprehensive care plan tailored to the individual.
Dr. Jiang’s research interests include evaluating quality-of-life issues related to food allergies, with an emphasis on underserved populations. She is also working with her colleagues to build out and validate a novel chemotherapy desensitization program for patients with cancer who have allergic reactions to chemotherapy.
Dr. Jiang has published her research in peer-reviewed journals such as Allergy, Frontiers in Immunology, The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice, and Clinical Reviews in Allergy and Immunology. She has also presented to her peers at international, national, and regional meetings, including the annual meetings of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI), the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI), and the Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Foundation of Northern California (AAIFNC).

While at Stanford, Dr. Jiang also received a master's degree in clinical research and epidemiology. Dr. Jiang has a particular interest in chronic pancreatitis and completed dedicated fellowship training in medical pancreatology under the mentorship of Dr. Stephen Pandol, a leading expert in the field. Her work emphasizes multidisciplinary care, and she is actively involved in clinical trials investigating innovative approaches such as novel nutritional therapies and digital health interventions. Her research has been published in Gastroenterology, Gut, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Frontiers in Physiology, Pancreas, and Cancers. Jocelyn Jiao, MD MS

Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Primary Care and Population HealthBioDr. Jiao is a fellowship-trained, board-certified neurologist with the Movement Disorders Center at Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences.
Dr. Jiao has extensive experience providing comprehensive care for patients with different types of movement disorders, including Parkinson’s disease. She is fellowship-trained in both movement disorders and hospice and palliative medicine. Dr. Jiao is developing an interdisciplinary neuropalliative clinic that emphasizes planning for the future and maximizes quality of life for people living with chronic neurological illness.
Dr. Jiao’s research efforts include a pilot study assessing the impact of deep brain stimulation (DBS) as a treatment for Parkinson’s-related motor symptoms upon mood and pain. Specifically, this work focuses on identifying correlations between DBS targets and reductions in medications that address depression, anxiety, and impulsivity symptoms that result from Parkinson’s treatments. Dr. Jiao has also completed a pilot study focused upon narrative medicine interventions for people living with Parkinson’s disease.
Dr. Jiao has published her work in multiple peer-reviewed journals, including Pain Medicine and the Journal of Neurosurgery. Dr. Jiao is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society , and the International Neuropalliative Care Society. -
Tomás R. Jiménez

BioTomás Jiménez is the Joan B. Ford Professor in the department of Sociology and Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity, and founding co-director of Stanford's Institute for Advancing Just Societies. He is also the director of the Qualitative Initiative in the Immigration Policy Lab. His research and writing focus on immigration, policy, assimilation, social mobility, and ethnic and racial identity. His latest book, States of Belonging: Immigration Policies, Attitudes, and Inclusion (Russell Sage Foundation Press) (with Deborah Schildkraut, Yuen Ho, and John Dovidio) uses survey data (with an embedded experiment) and in-depth interviews to understand how state-level immigration policies shape belonging among Latino immigrants, US-born Latinos, and US-born whites in Arizona and New Mexico. The American Sociological Association’s Population Section selected the book for its Otis Dudley Duncan Distinguished Book Award. His second book, The Other Side of Assimilation: How Immigrants are Changing American Life (University of California Press, 2017), uses interviews from a race and class spectrum of Silicon Valley residents to show how a relational form of assimilation changes both newcomers (immigrants and their children) and established individuals (people born in the US to US-born parents). His first book, Replenished Ethnicity: Mexican Americans, Immigration, and Identity(University of California Press, 2010), draws on interviews and participant observation to understand how uninterrupted Mexican immigration influences the ethnic identity of later-generation Mexican Americans. Professor Jiménez has also published his research in Science, American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, American Political Science Review, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Social Problems, International Migration Review, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Social Science Quarterly, DuBois Review, Social Currents, Qualitative Sociology, and the Annual Review of Sociology.
Professor Jiménez also researches immigration policy with Stanford's Immigration Policy Lab, directing the Lab's Qualitative Initiative to integrate qualitative and quantitative approaches in research to have policy impact. Current projects examine naturalization, refugee resettlement (with Pei Palmgren), and health and language access.
In other lines of research, Professor Jiménez and Sofia Avila examine how immigration becomes part of American national identity by studying a sample of high school US history textbooks from 1930-2007. This research employs hand-coding and computer-assisted text analysis of the textbook sample.
Professor Jiménez has taught at the University of California, San Diego. He was the Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer (2017-19). He has also been an Irvine Fellow at the New America Foundation and a Sage Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University (CASBS). He was the American Sociological Association Congressional Fellow in the office of US Rep. Michael Honda, where he served as a legislative aide for immigration, veterans’ affairs, housing, and election reform. His writing on policy has appeared in reports for the Immigration Policy Center and the Migration Policy Institute. He has written editorials on immigration in several major news outlets, including The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, CNN.com, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Hill, and the San Diego Union-Tribune.
