Ian Chua

BioIan Chua, MD, MHPE, MBA is a bicoastal pediatric hospitalist and clinical associate professor of pediatrics at Stanford Children’s Health (Palo Alto, CA) and Children’s National Medical Center (Washington, DC). He completed his residency at Stanford Children’s with concentrations in medical education and quality improvement. He obtained his Masters’ in Health Professions Education at University of Illinois in Chicago. He currently co-directs the Quality and Leadership Training (QUILT) program in the department of pediatrics as well as the PHM Leadership Rotation. He also directs the ACGME Fellows’ Common Core Curriculum, the PHM Fellowship Medical Education Pathway, and the Pediatric residency medical education pathway at Children’s National Medical Center. His interests have been in educational scholarship and professional development of transitional learners including junior faculty. Nationally, he has been involved in shaping the national PHM fellows' conference and is the current co-chair for the AAP SOHM Emerging Leaders Conference.

Rebecca Dang

BioDr. Rebecca Dang is an Instructor in the Division of General Pediatrics at Stanford University. She earned her medical degree at Georgetown School of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency at Kaiser Permanente Northern California. She also completed pediatric hospital medicine fellowship and a master’s program in clinical research and epidemiology at Stanford University. Dr. Dang provides clinical care for children on the pediatric ward and newborn nursery.
Dr. Dang’s research interest focuses on high-value pediatric care, which she hopes to improve through building evidence for common, understudied practices. Common practices that are ubiquitous throughout pediatric medicine are temperature measurement and management. Despite temperature measurement and the subsequent detection of ‘normal’ or ‘abnormal’ values driving clinical decision making, these temperature thresholds may be outdated or poorly defined. Dr. Dang has led many projects on temperature-related topics, including routine temperature measurement at well-child visits, pediatric temperature percentiles, risk factors for and outcomes of neonatal hypothermia in the newborn nursery, and newborn temperature norms. This work has led to first-author publications in the high-impact journals of Academic Pediatrics, Pediatrics, Journal of Pediatrics, JAMA Network Open, and Hospital Pediatrics. She has secured continual institutional and foundation funding, including a Maternal & Child Health Research Institute clinical trainee award and master’s tuition program, Gerber Foundation main and novice research award, the Department of Pediatrics’ Bridge-to-K Program, and the PEDSnet Scholars Program. -

Clinical Professor, Emergency MedicineBioLauren Destino, MD, is the Associate Division Chief of the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Division and co-Medical Director of Acute Care and Case Management at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford (LPCHS) and a Clinical Professor at Stanford University. She was a site co-Investigator for the I-PASS study at Stanford and the site Principal Investigator for the PCORI grant, Bringing I-PASS to the Bedside: A Communication Bundle to Improve Patient Safety and Experience. She is involved in a number of quality and process improvement related activities at LPCHS. She has led trainee education in quality and performance improvement and is a fellow in the Stanford Medicine Center for Improvement. Her research interests include communication among the care team (inclusive of patients and families), patient flow throughout the hospital, and value centered improvement.

Lyn Dos Santos

BioDr. Lyn Dos Santos is Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine. She did her Pediatrics Internship and Residency at Rush Presbyterian Medical Center in Chicago, IL and a Fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the Children's Hospital of Michigan, Wayne State University, Detroit MI. Following her clinical training, she practiced Pediatric Emergency Pediatrics for about 10 years in the Midwest and moved onto Pediatric Hospital medicine at Stanford in 2002. She is currently the Medical Director of the Pediatric Hospitalist Program at John Muir Medical Center; her special clinical interests are in Safety and Quality and surgical co-management.
She also has a special interest in leadership and building resilient, cohesive teams and has become a champion for Physician Wellness in Hospital Medicine. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsA bad latch means maternal excruciating pain, ineffective milk transfer with subsequent weight loss, hypoglycemia, higher risk of hyperbilirubinemia and dehydration fever.All of the above led to early cessation of breastfeeding; 46% of mothers who initiate exclusive breastfeeding stop within the first 12 weeks because of difficult latch. I developed a latch tutorial focusing on step-by step-in striations for achieving an effective, non-painful latch.

After graduating from USC Keck School of Medicine and completing my residency at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, I worked briefly in the outpatient setting, and then started my career as a Pediatric Hospitalist in 2006. Since 2016, I have functioned primarily as a Neonatal Hospitalist at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, CA, taking care of well newborns and Level 2 and 3 NICU patients, as well as attending deliveries and performing newborn procedures.

Neha Shirish Joshi, MD MS

BioNeha S Joshi, MD MS is an Instructor in the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine at Stanford University. Her clinical responsibilities include caring for hospitalized children at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford as a board certified Pediatric Hospitalist, and neonatal resuscitation and the care of level I/II late preterm and term newborns as a Neonatal Hospitalist. Dr. Joshi completed her MD with Distinction at the University of California San Francisco, followed by both residency in Pediatrics and fellowship in Pediatric Hospital Medicine at Stanford University. Dr. Joshi additionally completed a Masters in Clinical Research and Epidemiology at Stanford University. Her research program seeks to identify and implement high value care practices for late preterm and term infants during the birth hospitalization. Dr. Joshi's prior work has included the development of a clinical examination-based approach to identifying late preterm and term infants at risk for early onset sepsis; this work won the Jennifer Daru Memorial Award for manuscript with most potential to impact clinical care. Her current focus is the development of clinical benchmarks and quality markers for the care of late preterm infants during the birth hospitalization. Dr Joshi is presently supported by a NIH K23 Career Development Award, the Stanford Maternal and Child Health Research Institute, and the Society for Pediatric Research.

Joseph Kim

BioJoseph J. Kim, MD is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Kim also serves as the Chief of the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine at Stanford University and as the Associate Chief Medical Officer of Stanford Children’s Health. Dr. Kim’s career has focused on medical leadership and program building in pediatric hospital medicine. He has been active locally and nationally promoting patient experience, with particular emphasis on family centered care in pediatric inpatient settings. He has participated in numerous local and national care improvement programs including efforts around bronchiolitis, inpatient asthma management, pediatric sedation, medical co-management of surgical patients and patient care progression in inpatient settings. In his hospital administrative roles he has championed safety rounding, family centered rounding, scheduled based care of inpatients, discharge planning and value based performance improvement. Dr. Kim has mentored dozens of trainees and junior faculty in healthcare leadership and program administration.
Dr. Kim received his BA in Sociology from the University of Virginia and his MD from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. He completed his residency in pediatrics at the University of California San Francisco. Clinically, Dr. Kim practices as a Pediatric Hospitalist at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford and at California Pacific Medical Center. -

Rishi Mediratta

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI have developed a new promising neonatal mortality prediction score at the University of Gondar Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Gondar, Ethiopia. The score predicts approximately 84% of neonatal deaths in the NICU using clinical variables. I have a dataset over 800 NICU admissions in Gondar. I am recruiting scholars who are interested in conducting clinical and epidemiological research to validate, refine, and implement the mortality score to reduce neonatal mortality in Ethiopia.

BioAlok Patel is a pediatric hospitalist, medical journalist, on-camera expert, producer, and devotee of creative, engaging science communication tactics. He currently serves as the Faculty Director of Communications for the Department of Pediatrics. Through this role, he helps coordinate creative media strategies for awareness, education, advocacy, recruitment and more.
Dr. Patel has extensive experience in broadcast journalism, on-camera work, script writing, podcast hosting, media consulting, and designing social media campaigns and hopes to lend these skills to his work in public health messaging. He currently works as a pediatric hospitalist within the department of pediatrics at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. -
Lisa Patel

BioLisa Patel received her undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from Stanford University. After college, she worked in Egypt, Brazil, and India on international development projects with community-based organizations and non-profits, focusing on conservation and development efforts. She then obtained her Master's in Environmental Sciences from the Yale School of the Environment and went on to be a Presidential Management Fellow for the Environmental Protection Agency, coordinating the US Government's efforts on clean air and safe drinking water projects in South Asia in collaboration with the World Health Organization for which she was awarded the Trudy A. Specinar Award.
Realizing the critical and inextricable links between children's health and environmental issues, she obtained her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University and completed her residency in pediatrics at UCSF. For the last several years, she has used her extensive experience working for government, community organizations, and non-profits to advocate for children's health priorities in the US. She is previously the co-chair for the American Academy of Pediatrics Advocacy Committee, California Chapter 1 (AAP-CA1) and in her time helped launch the inaugural Advocating for Children Together conference for Northern California that became a yearly occurrence. She co-founded the Climate and Health Committee for AAP-CA1, and is a member of the Executive Committee for the AAP's national Council on Environmental Health and Climate Change. In these roles, she has co-led successfully introducing board certification materials on climate change into the American Board of Pediatrics, and written policy statements and book chapers for the AAP on plant-forward diets and climate-smart schools. She is formerly the rotation director for the pediatric resident's Community Pediatrics and Child Advocacy Rotation. Her extensive work in local advocacy was recognized by Stanford Children’s Health Advocacy Award in 2023.
She is currently the Executive Director for the Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health and maintains a clinical practice as a pediatric hospitalist caring for newborns, premature infants, and children requiring hospitalization. She serves on several boards and commissions, including Our Children's Trust, the legal organization that represented youth in Held v. Montana, Undaunted K12 whose mission is to facilitate climate-smart schools throughout the country, and the National Commission on Climate and Workforce Health which empowers businesses to protect their workers from mounting threats to their health from climate change. She is frequently asked to advise and review on topics including sustainable healthcare, early childhood development and climate, vegetarian and plant-forward diets, and communicating climate change as a health threat.
Communications remains a central part of her work, and she serves as a Science Mom to talk to other parents and caretakers about the health harms of climate change. Her work has also appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, the New York Times, the LA Times, Bloomberg News, and multiple state and local outlets. She is interviewed regularly for her expertise on climate, health, and equity for major national media outlets like the Washington Post, US News and World Report, and CNN, among others. -
Jack Percelay

BioJack Percelay has a 25+ year career in pediatric hospital medicine, beginning before the term hospitalist was invented when he started as an "in-house pediatrician in 1991 at several Bay Area hospitals after a brief career as a civilian primary care pediatrician at local and international US military bases. He has spent the majority of his career in community hospitals where his practice has run the gamut from the general pediatric ward and emergency room, to the PICU and intensive care nurseries, delivery room, and specialized neurologic and neurosurgical units. His work has taken him from San Francisco to New York City with brief stints in Hawaii. In 2015 he moved to Seattle Children's Hospital where he was an Associate Division Chief of Hospital Medicine, and in 2018 returned to the Bay Area joining the Stanford faculty.
He served as the founding chair of the AAP Section on Hospital Medicine, and has also served as the Chair of the AAP Committee on Hospital Care. He served for seven years as the pediatric board member for the Society of Hospital Medicine and has been recognized as a Master of Hospital Medicine by SHM. Additionally, he was an inaugural board member of the American Board of Pediatrics Pediatric Hospital Medicine Subspecialty Board. Areas of interest include pediatric hospital medicine systems of care, patient and family-centered care, BRUEs, billing and coding, and hospitalist roles in the PICU. -

Christopher John Russell
Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Hospital Medicine)
BioDr. Russell is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine and a board-certified academic pediatric hospitalist at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. His clinical responsibilities include caring for children hospitalized for a variety of illnesses. His research focuses on developing evidence-based care for hospitalized children with medical complexity, including acute respiratory infections (such as pneumonia and bacterial tracheitis). His research efforts have been recognized through receipt of the University of Southern California’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute’s KL2 Mentored Research Career Development Award (2014-16), the Academic Pediatric Association’s Young Investigator Award (2015-16), the NIH Loan Repayment Program (2017-2021) and a large grant from the Gerber Foundation (2020-2022). In August 2021, he received a five-year R01 award from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to study bacterial respiratory infections in children with tracheostomy. Outside of his clinical and research responsibilities, Dr. Russell focuses on research mentorship of medical students, pediatric residents, and pediatric hospital medicine fellows as well as improving representation of underrepresented minorities in medicine throughout the continuum of physician training. Dr. Russell completed a term as the chair of the Academic Pediatric Association’s Membership, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee (2022-2025) and is on the Executive Committee for the Pediatric Research in Inpatient Settings research network. Dr. Russell is active in the AAP and currently serves as an Associate Editor for the journal Hospital Pediatrics.
