Rachael Healy

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsResearch interests: youth, working-class life, colonialism, urban landscapes, intergenerational trauma, (contentious) commemoration, collective memory, time and space/place-making, narrative and storytelling, borderlands, post-conflict space, Northern Ireland/Ireland, political identity, precarity, hope(lessness).
Broadly, my PhD research focuses on youth culture and teenage life in post-conflict Belfast. I am interested in discourses of intergenerational trauma and community spaces and how these are seen as points of relation in a larger communal making-sense of a growing youth mental health crisis in a West Belfast neighbourhood. My research contributed to new understandings about how vernaculars of political violence shift according to new and ever-expanding pressures and priorities in community life and cultural cultivation.
Prior to joining Stanford, I received a First Class Honours degree in Global Health and Social Medicine from King’s College London. I also received a Master of Arts in Anthropology and Sociology from the Graduate Institute Geneva. Before attending university, I worked for four years in various public health and youth work roles in Palestine, South Africa and Scotland. -

I am currently a visiting scholar at Stanford University’s Psychophysiology Lab, supported by a fellowship from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Additionally, I am a research fellow at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. I earned my Ph.D. in psychology from Freie Universität Berlin and am also a German board-certified cognitive-behavioral psychotherapist, having completed my training at the Zentrum für Psychotherapie der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

BioDaniel E. Ho is the William Benjamin Scott and Luna M. Scott Professor of Law, Professor of Political Science, Professor of Computer Science (by courtesy), Senior Fellow at Stanford's Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, and Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research at Stanford University. He is a Faculty Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and is Director of the Regulation, Evaluation, and Governance Lab (RegLab). Ho serves on the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Commission (NAIAC), advising the White House on artificial intelligence, as Senior Advisor on Responsible AI at the U.S. Department of Labor, and as a Public Member of the Administrative Conference of the United States (ACUS). He received his J.D. from Yale Law School and Ph.D. from Harvard University and clerked for Judge Stephen F. Williams on the U.S. Court of Appeals, District of Columbia Circuit.

Ian Hodder
Dunlevie Family Professor, Emeritus
BioIan Hodder joined the Department of Cultural and Social Anthropology in September of 1999. Among his publications are: Symbols in Action (Cambridge 1982), Reading the Past (Cambridge 1986), The Domestication of Europe (Oxford 1990), The Archaeological Process (Oxford 1999). Catalhoyuk: The Leopard's Tale (Thames and Hudson 2006), and Entangled. An archaeology of the relationships between humans and things (Wiley and Blackwell, 2012). Professor Hodder has been conducting the excavation of the 9,000 year-old Neolithic site of Catalhoyuk in central Turkey since 1993. The 25-year project has three aims - to place the art from the site in its full environmental, economic and social context, to conserve the paintings, plasters and mud walls, and to present the site to the public. The project is also associated with attempts to develop reflexive methods in archaeology. Dr. Hodder is currently the Dunlevie Family Professor Emeritus.

Derek Holliday
Postdoctoral Scholar, Political Science
BioDerek Holliday is a Postdoctoral Fellow for the Polarization Research Lab, a cross-university lab between Stanford, Dartmouth, and UPenn researching affective polarization, social trust, and political violence. His work with the lab has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. His research focuses on political representation, opinion, and behavior, especially in state and local politics. His methodological interests include survey experiments, text-as-data, and applications of machine learning in social science.
Derek received his PhD in Political Science in 2023 from UCLA, where he jointly obtained an MS in Statistics. At UCLA, he was the project coordinator for Nationscape, a U.S. election survey that interviewed almost half a million respondents through the 2020 Presidential campaign. Additionally, he worked as a research analyst for the UCLA COVID-19 Health and Politics Project, a collaboration between social scientists and doctors measuring people’s pandemic experiences and attitudes. Work from the project has been featured in the New York Times and published in Vaccine. -

Caroline Hoxby

BioCaroline Hoxby is the Scott and Donya Bommer Professor of Economics at Stanford University, a Senior Fellow of the Hoover Institution, and the Director of the Economics of Education Program at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Before moving to Stanford, she was the Allie S. Fried Professor of Economics at Harvard University. A public and labor economist, Hoxby is one of the world's leading scholars in the Economics of Education. She is especially well known for promoting scientific methods in education research. She was the Principal Investigator of the Expanding College Opportunities project, which had dramatic effects on low-income, high achievers' college-going. For this project, recently received The Smithsonian Institution's Ingenuity Award. Some of the other research for which she is best known includes explaining the rising cost of higher education, the effects of school choice and charter schools on student achievement, and the effects of teacher unionization. She also writes on public school finance, peer effects, and how education affects economic growth. Her recent series of Tanner Lectures on Human Values (Berkeley) focuses on neuroscience and the cognitive skills of adolescents. She is a past Vice-President of the American Economic Association and the current Vice-President of the Western Economic Association International. Hoxby is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the British Academy, and the American Academy of Sciences and Letters. She is an award-winning instructor and advisor and is a Bass University Fellow in Undergraduate Education at Stanford University. Hoxby has a Ph.D. from MIT, studied at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, and obtained her baccalaureate degree summa cum laude from Harvard University.

Jackelyn Hwang
Associate Professor of Sociology
BioJackelyn Hwang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Director of the Changing Cities Research Lab. Jackelyn’s main research interests are in the fields of urban sociology, race and ethnicity, immigration, and inequality. In particular, her research uses innovative data, measures, and methods to answer: how do neighborhood-level dynamics that are typically racialized drive changes in US residential segregation? Her projects focus on how residential sorting mechanisms shape how gentrification unfolds over time and space, the consequences of gentrification on residential displacement, and developing data and measurement infrastructures for improving measures of gentrification, including developing automated methods using computer vision to measure visible neighborhood conditions and their changes over time from Google Street View imagery. By improving our understanding of urban change and segregation, her work aims to advance policy solutions that promote racial equity as cities change.
Jackelyn received her B.A.S. in Sociology and Mathematics from Stanford University and her Ph.D. in Sociology and Social Policy from Harvard University. After completing her Ph.D., she was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Office of Population Research at Princeton University. Her research has been supported by the American Sociological Association, the Joint Center for Housing Studies, the National Science Foundation, among others. Her work has appeared in the American Journal of Sociology, American Sociological Review, City & Community, Demography, Social Forces, Sociological Methods and Research, Sociological Methodology, and Urban Affairs Review, and other academic journals. -
Miyako Inoue
Associate Professor of Anthropology and, by courtesy, of Linguistics
BioMiyako Inoue teaches linguistic anthropology and the anthropology of Japan. She also has a courtesy appointment with the Department of Linguistics.
Her first book, titled, Vicarious Language: the Political Economy of Gender and Speech in Japan (University of California Press), examines a phenomenon commonly called "women's language" in Japanese modern society, and offers a genealogy showing its critical linkage with Japan's national and capitalist modernity. Professor Inoue is currently working on a book-length project on a social history of “verbatim” in Japanese. She traces the historical development of the Japanese shorthand technique used in the Diet for its proceedings since the late 19th century, and of the stenographic typewriter introduced to the Japanese court for the trial record after WWII. She is interested in learning what it means to be faithful to others by coping their speech, and how the politico-semiotic rationality of such stenographic modes of fidelity can be understood as a technology of a particular form of governance, namely, liberal governance. Publication that has come out of her current project includes, "Stenography and Ventriloquism in Late Nineteenth Century Japan." Language & Communication 31.3 (2011).

Shanto Iyengar
William Robertson Coe Professor and Professor of Political Science and of Communication
BioShanto Iyengar is a Professor of Political Science and Director of the Political Communication Laboratory. Iyengar’s areas of expertise include the role of mass media in democratic societies, public opinion, and political psychology. Iyengar’s research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Ford Foundation, the Pew Charitable Trusts, and the Hewlett Foundation. He is the recipient of several professional awards including the Philip Converse Award of the American Political Science Association for the best book in the field of public opinion, the Murray Edelman Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Goldsmith Book Prize from Harvard University. Iyengar is author or co-author of several books, including News That Matters (University of Chicago Press, 1987), Is Anyone Responsible? (University of Chicago Press, 1991), Explorations in Political Psychology (Duke University Press, 1995), Going Negative (Free Press, 1995), and Media Politics: A Citizen’s Guide (Norton, 2011).

Jacob Jaffe
Postdoctoral Scholar, Political Science
BioJacob Jaffe is a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Political Science. Jaffe defended his Ph.D. dissertation from MIT in July of 2023. Jaffe specializes in American Politics and Methodology. His work explores the administration of American elections, trust in government, and public opinion. In combining large observational datasets and experimental ones, Jaffe shows how elite behavior and policy govern how Americans experience elections and how public opinion changes over time.

Lochlann Jain
Professor of Anthropology
BioJain is an award-winning author and Professor of Anthropology at Stanford University, Visiting Chair of Global Health and Social Medicine at King’ College London, and a Research Affiliate at VIAD, University of Johannesburg. His work aims to unsettle some of the deeply held assumptions about objectivity that underlie the history of medical research. Jain is the author of Injury (Princeton UP: 2006); Malignant: How Cancer Becomes Us (UC Press: 2013); and a book of drawings, Things that Art: A Graphic Menagerie of Enchanting Curiosity (U of Toronto Press: 2019).
Jain is currently working on two books. The first, supported by a Guggenheim Fellowship, develops the concept of The WetNet, which refers to fluid bonding among humans and animals in ways that create pathways for the transmission of pathogens. Specifically, mid-century bioscientific practices such as blood harvesting and transfusion, and vaccine development and testing involved exchanges in human and animal effluvia, the risks of which have largely been disavowed. Jain’s current book project elucidates the concept of The WetNet through a rigorous history of the hepatitis B virus and the development of the first hepatitis B vaccine.
The second project, “The Lung is a Bird and a Fish,” is a cultural history of drowning in prose and drawing. -

Stanford Student Employee, Hoover InstitutionBioJlateh Vincent Jappah is a PhD Candidate in Health Policy (Health Economics) at Stanford. His research interests intersect between methods that enhance access to the social determinants of health and the provision of appropriate and timely healthcare services, with the aim of reducing avoidable morbidity and mortality and improving overall health and well-being, especially for underserved and vulnerable populations.
Jappah contends that although health insurance and access to healthcare services are important elements in the health production function, other structural and socio-economic factors collude to either foster or erode health. As such, he has a keen interest in public policy, economics, medicine, global public health, maternal and child health, and a curiosity to understand those socio-political and institutional forces that shape health and well-being. He is also interested in machine learning and artificial intelligence in healthcare.
In addition to the United States, Jappah has lived and worked in several countries in Africa, Asia, and Europe.
He is bi-lingual (English and Russian). -
Hakeem Jefferson
Assistant Professor of Political Science
BioI am an assistant professor of political science at Stanford University where I am also a faculty affiliate with the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity and the Stanford Center for American Democracy. I received my PhD in political science from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and African American Studies from the University of South Carolina.
My research focuses primarily on the role identity plays in structuring political attitudes and behaviors in the U.S. I am especially interested in understanding how stigma shapes the politics of Black Americans, particularly as it relates to group members’ support for racialized punitive social policies. In other research projects, I examine the psychological and social roots of the racial divide in Americans’ reactions to officer-involved shootings and work to evaluate the meaningfulness of key political concepts, like ideological identification, among Black Americans.
My dissertation, "Policing Norms: Punishment and the Politics of Respectability Among Black Americans," was a co-winner of the 2020 Best Dissertation Award from the Political Psychology Section of the American Political Science Association. -
Saumitra Jha

He is also a Senior Fellow at the Center for Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law in the Freeman-Spogli Institute for International Affairs and convenes the Stanford Conflict and Polarization Lab.
Saumitra holds a BA from Williams College, master’s degrees in economics and mathematics from the University of Cambridge, and a PhD in economics from Stanford University. Prior to joining the GSB, he was an Academy Scholar at Harvard University. He has been a Center Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, as well as of the Niehaus Center for Globalization and Governance and the Center for the Study of Democratic Politics at Princeton University. He was voted Teacher of the Year by the students of the Stanford GSB Sloan Fellow Class of 2020. He received the Michael Wallerstein Award for best published article in Political Economy from the American Political Science Association in 2014 for his research on ethnic tolerance and his co-authored work on Heroes was awarded the 2020 Oliver Williamson Best Paper Award from the Society for Institutional and Organizational Economics.
