Lidia Schapira
Professor of Medicine (Oncology)
BioDr. Schapira is a medical oncologist with clinical expertise in the treatment of breast cancer. As the inaugural Director of Stanford's Cancer Survivorship Program, she has developed a thriving research and clinical program focused on optimizing health outcomes for people living with and beyond cancer. Dr. Schapira is interested in training future generations of physician-scientists as well as the broader community of practicing physicians through the design of innovative educational programs. Dr. Schapira's advocacy for people with cancer led to her appointment as Editor-in-Chief of the American Society of Clinical Oncology's website for the public,Cancer.Net, a position she held from 2015 until-2021. She served on the Board of Directors of the American Psychosocial Oncology Society and as Chair of the Psychosocial Interest Group of the Multinational Society for Supportive Care in Cancer. Dr. Schapira is particularily committed to reducing inequities in cancer outcomes and improve access to cancer care and cancer clinical trials. Dr. Schapira has published numerous manuscripts, lectures both nationally and internationally on issues of cancer survivorship and served as Associate Editor of the narrative section, Art of Oncology, for the Journal of Clinical Oncology from 2013 until 2023.

Salena Schapp
Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioDr. Salena Schapp is a licensed psychologist (PSY29619) and Co-Founder of Beyond Measure. She has experience treating patients across the lifespan, and a particular specialty working with children, adolescents, and families. In her work with children and families, Dr. Schapp is collaborative, compassionate, and playful. She provides a range of psychological services, specializing in treatment of eating disorders, anxiety, behavioral challenges, and trauma. Dr. Schapp is passionate about helping families create a supportive and strong parent-child relationship. She uses evidenced-based approaches to therapy, while individualizing treatment to match each patient’s needs, including cognitive behavioral therapy, family-based therapy, parent management training, parent-child interaction therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy. She practices from a weight-inclusive, Health at Every Size (HAES)® approach, to help individuals improve their relationship to food and their bodies. Dr. Schapp also has extensive experience with group therapy, and enjoys creating a supportive, safe, and helpful group environment. She is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor for the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine, where she runs a support group for psychiatry residents.
Dr. Schapp completed her graduate training in clinical psychology at the PGSP-Stanford PsyD Consortium, where she focused her studies on children and families. She finished her predoctoral internship training at University of Texas Austin/Dell Children’s Medical Center and her postdoctoral residency at Kaiser Permanente in Redwood City. Dr. Schapp enjoys giving back to the psychological community, and currently serves as the President of the SF Bay Area Chapter of the International Association for Eating Disorder Professionals. She has a strong interest in teaching and supervision, and has provided training opportunities and supervision for trainees at Kaiser Permanente and Beyond Measure. She also enjoys consulting with and teaching other professionals and the community at large through trainings and presentations. -

Celine Scheidt

BioCéline Scheidt has worked extensively in uncertainty modeling, sensitivity analysis, geostatistics and in the use of distance-based methods in reservoir modeling. She obtained her PhD at Strasbourg University and the IFP (France) in applied mathematics, with a focus on the use of experimental design and geostatistical methods to model response surfaces.

Clinical Professor, MedicineBioDavid Scheinker is the Executive Director of Systems Design and Collaborative Research at the Stanford Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. He is the Founder and Director of SURF Stanford Medicine, a group that brings together students and faculty from the university with physicians, nurses, and administrators from the hospitals. SURF has implemented and published dozens of projects demonstrating improvements to the quality and efficiency of care. His areas of focus include clinical care delivery, technical improvements to hospital operations, sensor-based and algorithm-enabled telemedicine, and the socioeconomic factors that shape healthcare cost and quality.
Before coming to Stanford, he was a Joint Research Fellow at The MIT Sloan School of Management and Massachusetts General Hospital. He received a PhD in theoretical math from The University of California San Diego under Jim Agler. He advises Carta Healthcare, a healthcare analytics company started by former students. -

She co-teaches courses and co-advises several graduate students with a focus on basin and petroleum system modeling and investigative methods for exploring conventional and unconventional hydrocarbons.
Professional Activities
Prior to joining Stanford, Allegra was a member of the Geophysical Unit of Menlo Park and the Energy Resources Program at the U.S. Geological Survey, where she constructed three-dimensional geologic models for use in the resource assessment process. Allegra has led and participated in numerous field programs at sea and in the United States. She is the editor of U.S.G.S. Professional Paper 1713 and a past Associate Editor of Journal of Geophysical Research. -
Eva L. Scheller
Assistant Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences
BioProf. Scheller leads the Planetary Chemistry and Spectroscopy group. Her research focuses on working with and developing instrumentation (spectroscopy and stable isotope mass spectrometry) on spacecraft missions designed to study the chemistry of planetary surfaces and materials, combining laboratory spectroscopy experiments with spacecraft dataset analysis and instrument development. She has a keen interest in exploring limitations and detectability challenges in spacecraft instrumentation, such as refining mineral, volatile, and organic detection methods for spacecraft instrumentation. The main focus of her research is using these datasets and experiments in order to understand the global volatile cycles of planetary bodies and their effects on controlling the evolution of atmospheres, crusts, and habitability of planets.
Prof. Scheller is currently developing the Stanford Planetary Chemistry and Spectroscopy computational and experimental laboratory, which will focus on UV to longwave infrared spectroscopy at ambient and ultrahigh vacuum, cryogenic conditions as well as AI methodologies applied to the analysis of spectral datasets. -

Londa Schiebinger
John L. Hinds Professor of the History of Science
BioLonda Schiebinger is the John L. Hinds Professor of History of Science in the History Department at Stanford University and Director of the EU/US Gendered Innovations in Science, Health & Medicine, Engineering, and Environment Project. From 2004-2010, Schiebinger served as the Director of Stanford's Clayman Institute for Gender Research. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Professor Schiebinger received her Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1984 and is a leading international authority on gender in science and technology. Over the past thirty years, Schiebinger's work has been devoted to teasing apart three analytically distinct but interlocking pieces of the gender and science puzzle: the history of women's participation in science; gender in the structure of scientific institutions; and the gendering of human knowledge.
Londa Schiebinger presented the keynote address and wrote the conceptual background paper for the United Nations' Expert Group Meeting on Gender, Science, and Technology, September 2010 in Paris. She presented the findings at the United Nations in New York, February 2011 with an update spring 2014. In 2022, she prepared the background paper for the United Nations 67th session of the Commission on the Status of Women’s priority theme, Innovation and Technological Change, and Education in the Digital Age for Achieving Gender Equality and The Empowerment of all Women and Girls. Since 2023, Gendered Innovations has been a member of the UNFPA Equity 2030 Alliance.
In 2011-2014, Schiebinger entered into major collaborations with the European Commission and the U.S. National Science Foundation to promote Gendered Innovations in Science, Health & Medicine, Engineering, and Environment. This project draws experts from across the U.S., Europe, Canada, and Asia, and was presented at the European Parliament, July 2013 as Gendered Innovations: How Gender Analysis Contributes to Research. In 2018-2020, Schiebinger directed the European Commission Expert Group to produce Gendered Innovations 2: How Inclusive Analysis Contributes to Research and Innovation. Institutes for Gendered Innovations research opened in Soeul, South Korea, in 2015 and in Tokyo, Japan, in 2022.
Schiebinger’s work has been featured in Science: A Framework for Sex, Gender, and Diversity Analysis in Research: Funding Agencies Have Ample Room to Improve Their Policies (2022); Nature: Sex and Gender Analysis Improves Science and Engineering (2019); Nature: Design AI so that it's Fair (2018); Nature: Accounting for Sex and Gender Makes for Better Science (2020).
Her work in the eighteenth century investigates the circulation of knowledge in the Atlantic World. Her Secret Cures of Slaves: People, Plants, and Medicine in the Eighteenth-Century Atlantic World reconceptualizes research in four areas: first and foremost knowledge of African contributions to early modern science; the historiography of race in science; the history of human experimentation; and the role of science in the eighteenth-century Atlantic world. Her prize-winning Plants and Empire: Colonial Bioprospecting in the Atlantic World investigates women's indigenous knowledge of abortifacients and why this knowledge did not travel.
Londa Schiebinger has been the recipient of numerous prizes and awards, including the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Research Prize and John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. She was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium (2013), the Faculty of Science, Lund University, Sweden (2017), and the University of Valencia, Spain (2018); the Berlin Falling Walls Breakthrough Winner in Science & Innovation Management (2022). Her work has been translated into numerous languages. In 2022/23, she served as an advisor to the Berlin University Alliance. -
Debra Schifrin
Spring CSP Instructor
BioDebra Schifrin designs and leads corporate workshops on leadership, communication, collaboration, agility, storytelling, and creativity. At Stanford Graduate School of Business, she co-designed, piloted and teaches the school’s first improv-based MBA management course. The course empowers students to become better leaders, managers, and team members. It is one of the only such MBA courses in the world. She is co-creating and teaching a new MBA course in Spring 2021,"Creativity and the Business Ecosystem." Debra has written and published over 80 Stanford and Harvard business cases, which are taught in MBA classes at the GSB and at other business schools. The topics of her business cases include strategy; marketing; product and social innovation; humor; and storytelling.
Before joining Stanford, Debra spent 11 years as a reporter, director and producer for National Public Radio and Marketplace. She produced thousands of breaking news and feature stories for the NPR flagship news program All Things Considered and directed the broadcast. Her stories and commentaries aired on All Things Considered, Morning Edition and Marketplace. A long-time actor and improvisor, Debra performs most weekends in San Francisco in many formats, including improvised musicals and improvised Star Trek. -

BioAlain Schläpfer is a Social Science Research Scholar at the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law, and a Lecturer in the Ford Dorsey Master's in International Policy. His research examines the evolution of cooperation among individuals and groups, with a particular emphasis on the role of reputational concerns. He also investigates the formation of preferences and of cultural norms, as well as their effects on behavior and long term outcomes. Alain's research has been published in journals in political science, economics and biology, and makes use of formal modelling, causal identification and computer simulations. Originally from Switzerland, Alain received his PhD from Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsIn between the few-particle realm where we have mastered quantum mechanics and the macroscopic domain describable by classical physics, there lies a broad swath of territory where quantum effects are relevant but still largely out of our control and partly beyond our comprehension. This territory includes metrological instruments whose precision is limited by the quantum projection noise of millions of atoms; and materials whose bulk properties emerge from many-body interactions intractable to simulation on classical computers. Professor Schleier-Smith’s research aims to advance our control and understanding of many-particle quantum systems by engineering new quantum states and Hamiltonians with ensembles of laser-cooled atoms.

Mariana Schmajuk
Clinical Assistant Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioMariana Schmajuk received her medical school education at Boston University School of Medicine in 2012. She completed her General Adult Psychiatry Residency program Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York in 2016, serving as Chief Resident with a focus on the early transition from medical school to residency. She went on to complete her Consult-Liaison fellowship at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Columbia University Medical Center in 2017.
Dr. Schmajuk joined Stanford University CLP team in 2017. She is a primary member of the emergency medicine consultations, working collaboratively with a nurse practioner, social worker and residents. Clinically, Dr. Schmajuk focuses on treating patients with terminal neurological disorders and oncological processes. Dr. Schmajuk is the director of the Psychosomatic Continuity clinic where residents and fellows are able to assess and longitudinally treat patients with psychiatric sequela in the context of complex medical illness. She has a particular interest in brief psychotherapeutic interventions. She enjoys teaching medical students about CL psychiatry and interviewing skills. At present, Dr. Schmajuk is using techniques of applied improvisation to educate psychiatry residents and others about the building blocks of communication. She also is an active member of the bioethics committee. -
Ludwig Schmidt

BioLudwig Schmidt is an assistant professor at Stanford University in the Computer Science Department and Stanford Data Science. Ludwig’s research interests revolve around the empirical foundations of machine learning, often with a focus on datasets, reliable generalization, multimodality, and language models. Recently, Ludwig’s research group contributed to open source machine learning by creating OpenCLIP, DCLM, and the LAION-5B dataset. Ludwig completed his PhD at MIT and was a postdoc at UC Berkeley. Ludwig’s research received a new horizons award at EAAMO, best paper awards at ICML & NeurIPS, a best paper finalist at CVPR, and the Sprowls dissertation award from MIT.

Peter Schmidt

BioPete Schmidt, MD, MSc is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine, Division of Pain Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he conceptualized and launched the Stanford Cancer Pain program. He provides comprehensive and individualized care for patients with cancer-related pain, including patients who are suffering from the effects of cancer treatment. His clinical expertise also includes ultrasound-guided nerve blocks, perioperative pain management, and safe medication tapering after definitive cancer treatment. He is board-certified in Anesthesiology, Pain Medicine, and Addiction Medicine.
Dr. Schmidt's research interests are in clinical trials, drug development, and novel regulatory endpoints. He has designed and led over a dozen clinical trials in the fields of pain management, neurology, infectious diseases, and rare diseases. Dr. Schmidt has published his research findings in several high-impact journals, including Science: Translational Medicine and the New England Journal of Medicine. He is also the author of several book chapters on pain management and perioperative management. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsFrom a research perspective, my long-term career plan is to refine the understanding of normal and dysfunctional sleep, much like the Epilepsy Phenome/Genome Project (EPGP) and Epi4K are doing for the enigmatic epilepsies. Insufficient sleep has been deemed a public health problem with poorly understood behavioral and physiologic sleep disorders lying at the core of the issue. I am currently using well-defined distinct and objective phenotypes (e.g. periodic limb movements, hypocretin-deficient narcolepsy) to acquire the analytic skills necessary to expand my knowledge of both signal processing and genetics, with the former enhancing my ability to identify and/or refine sleep phenotypes, and the latter facilitating the pathophysiological understanding of these phenotypes. As a consequence of a better link between symptoms/phenotypes, physiology, and genetic risks, more personally targeted and effective therapeutics can be developed to address the enriched spectrum of sleep disorders.

Our neuroscience studies combine these imaging innovations with behavioral, electrophysiological, optogenetic and computational methods, enabling a holistic approach to brain science.

Donald Schreiber

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research group focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular emergencies including acute myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndrome and congestive heart failure. We have evaluated novel cardiac markers and point-of-care testing in clinical practice. Current projects also include the diagnosis and treatment of acute pulmonary embolism and deep venous thrombosis. Other interests include spinal cord injury, pneumonia and sepsis.

Kristin Schreiber
Professor of Anesthesiology, Perioperative & Pain Medicine (Regional Anesthesia)
BioDr. Kristin Schreiber is a Professor and Regional Anesthesiologist whose clinical work involves caring for surgical patients in the perioperative period, and whose research work is centered around predicting and preventing Chronic Postsurgical Pain (CPSP). Her PhD in Neuroscience investigated mechanisms of spinal plasticity in the development of chronic pain states, and her translational clinical research program aims to understand which patient are at risk to develop CPSP, why, and how to best prevent it in different individuals. She employs the careful preoperative pain phenotyping, investigating factors that underlie variability in postsurgical trajectories, and testing both pharmacologic and behavioral interventions to reduce postsurgical pain. Her quantitative sensory testing lab-based studies investigate difference in pain processing, in the absence and presence of modulators of pain including regional anesthesia, placebo, distraction, and music. She has enjoyed continuous external funding from the NIH since 2015, and has held administrative roles including associate VC of Research, and VC of Faculty Development, and PI of a translational pain research training grant at Harvard Medical School. She is a handling editor at Anesthesiology, and Pain Medicine, and currently serves as the Chief of Regional Anesthesia in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine.

Alan Schroeder
Clinical Professor, Pediatrics
BioDr. Schroeder is the associate chief for research in the division of pediatric hospital medicine at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, and a clinical professor in the division of hospital medicine and the division of critical care. His research interests focus on identifying areas where we can “safely do less” in healthcare, striving to ensure that children get the healthcare that they need while avoiding excessive tests and treatments that only cause harm. Dr. Schroeder is currently involved in multiple projects involving common conditions and interventions in pediatrics. He serves as the Stanford PI for PEDSNet and is an Associate Editor for the journal Hospital Pediatrics. At Stanford he co-leads the residency clinical research scholarly concentration and the faculty Clinical Research Peer Scholarship Community. Dr. Schroeder provides clinical care for children in the PICU and the pediatric ward.

Dustin Schroeder
Associate Professor of Geophysics, of Electrical Engineering and Senior Fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment
BioMy research focuses on advancing the scientific and technical foundations of geophysical ice penetrating radar and its use in observing and understanding the interaction of ice and water in the solar system. I am primarily interested in the subglacial and englacial conditions of rapidly changing ice sheets and their contribution to global sea level rise. However, a growing secondary focus of my work is the exploration of icy moons. I am also interested in the development and application of science-optimized geophysical radar systems. I consider myself a radio glaciologist and strive to approach problems from both an earth system science and a radar system engineering perspective. I am actively engaged with the flow of information through each step of the observational science process; from instrument and experiment design, through data processing and analysis, to modeling and inference. This allows me to draw from a multidisciplinary set of tools to test system-scale and process-level hypotheses. For me, this deliberate integration of science and engineering is the most powerful and satisfying way to approach questions in Earth and planetary science.

BioBeth Schueler is an Associate Professor of Education at Stanford University. She studies education policy, politics, and governance. Her goal is to understand the political dimensions of educational policymaking to help policymakers and practitioners improve school systems and better serve students. Much of her work has focused on efforts to improve U.S. K-12 schools and districts that have been labelled low-performing. She uses both quantitative and qualitative research methods, often in partnership with state and local educational agencies, to study topics including accountability policy, school and district turnaround, state takeovers of school districts, school board governance, public opinion, (de)centralization, education leadership, individualized instruction, the development of civic competencies, and more. Prior to Stanford, she was on the faculty at the University of Virginia and was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Kevin Schulman

BioDr. Schulman is a Professor of Medicine, and, by courtesy, Professor of Operations, Information and Technology at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. He serves as an Associate Chair of the Department of Medicine. He is the Faculty Director of Stanford’s new applied master degree program, the Master of Science in Clinical Informatics Management program. He also serves as Deputy Director of the Clinical Excellence Research Center (CERC) at the Stanford University School of Medicine, and has an appointment in the Department of Health Policy (by courtesy).
Dr. Schulman is a health economist/health services researcher working at the intersection of business, medicine and technology. With over 500 publications, he has had a broad impact on several areas of health policy (Scopus h-index=83). His research has appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and Health Affairs. He is the editor-in-chief of Health Management, Policy and Innovation (www.HMPI.Org), and Senior Associate Editor of Health Service Research (HSR).
He is a graduate of Dartmouth College, the New York University School of Medicine, and The Wharton Health Care Management Program. He is an elected member of ASCI and AAP. -
Kenneth Schultz
William Bennett Munro Professor of Political Science
BioKenneth A. Schultz is William Bennett Munro Professor of Political Science at Stanford University. His research examines international conflict and conflict resolution. He is the author of Democracy and Coercive Diplomacy and World Politics: Interests, Interactions, and Institutions (with David Lake and Jeffry Frieden), as well as numerous articles in peer-reviewed scholarly journals. He was the recipient the 2003 Karl Deutsch Award, given by the International Studies Association, and a 2025 Walter J. Gores Award for Excellence in Teaching, awarded by Stanford University. He received his PhD in political science from Stanford University.

Molly Schumer
Associate Professor of Biology
BioMolly Schumer is an Assistant Professor in Biology. She is interested in genetics and evolutionary biology. After receiving her PhD at Princeton, she did her postdoctoral work at Columbia and was a Junior Fellow in the Harvard Society of Fellows and Hanna H. Gray Fellow at Harvard Medical School. Current research in the lab centers on understanding the genetic mechanisms of evolution, with a focus on natural populations.

Philip Schuster
Professor of Particle Physics and Astrophysics
BioProfessor Schuster is a theoretical physicist focused on identifying dark matter and its properties, developing concepts for new experimental tests of physics beyond the Standard Model, and studying novel theories of long-range forces. He is also directly involved in several experimental efforts as co-spokesperson for APEX, a founding member and physics coordinator for LDMX, and as a founding member of HPS.
Prospective graduate students interested in research rotations should contact Professor Schuster directly. Recent research directions include new ideas to detect axions, milli-charge dark matter, the use of novel accelerator experiments to search for light WIMP-like dark matter, and generalizations of gauge theories that include massless particles with continuous spin. Jennifer Schwartz Poehlmann

BioReaching out to Stanford’s diverse body of students and beyond to share the excitement of scientific discovery has been a growing passion for Dr. Jennifer Schwartz Poehlmann. In addition to coordinating and co-teaching Stanford’s freshmen chemistry sequence, she takes a leadership role in developing training programs for teaching assistants and enhancing classroom and lab experiences for undergraduates, while also providing STEM learning opportunities for incoming freshmen and local high school students.
Jennifer Schwartz Poehlmann studied chemistry at Washington University in Saint Louis Missouri (A.B. 2002) before coming to Stanford University as a graduate student (Ph.D. 2008). Her thesis work under Prof. Edward Solomon addressed structural contributions to reactivity in active sites of non-heme di-iron enzymes, including ferritins. She joined the Stanford Center (now Vice Provost) for Teaching and Learning as a Teaching Fellow in 2008. In 2009, she became Lecturer and Introductory Course Coordinator for the Department of Chemistry, and in 2011 was promoted to Senior Lecturer. She has received multiple awards for her teaching and training work, including the Walter J. Gores Award for Excellence in Teaching, Dean’s Award for Achievements in Teaching, Hoagland Award Fund for Innovations in Undergraduate Teaching, and Society of Latino Engineers and School of Engineering’s Professor of the Year Award.
Teaching
Dr. Schwartz coordinates and co-teaches the introductory course sequence of Chem31A, 31B, and 33 for about 450 students each year. She has also created a set of companion courses (Chem31A-C, 31B-C, and 33-C) designed to provide motivated students an opportunity to build stronger study habits and problem solving tools that help them persevere in the sciences regardless of prior science background. In parallel, she has been involved in the creation and teaching of the Leland Scholars Program, which facilitates the transition to college for incoming freshman intending to study in STEM or pre-health fields.
Instructor Training
Dr. Schwartz has always believed that well-prepared and enthusiastic teachers inspire and motivate learning, yet excellent teaching requires training, feedback, reflection and support. She has worked both within the department and more broadly to help ensure that teaching assistants throughout the university receive the training, practice and mentorship they need to grow and excel as educators. She previously directed the Department of Chemistry’s TA Training program and, with the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning, co-founded and directs the Mentors in Teaching Program, MinT, which provides training and resources to teaching mentors from more than 15 departments on campus. Through MinT, advanced graduate students learn effective ways to mentor TAs, through mid-quarter feedback, classroom observation, establishment of teaching goals, and workshops that enable new TAs to better engage with students in the classroom.
Enhanced Learning Experiences
Dr. Schwartz has been heavily involved in the development of hands-on, guided-inquiry lab activities that are now fully integrated into lab/lecture courses throughout the introductory general and organic chemistry sequence. Through the “Inspiring Future Scientists in Chemistry” Outreach Program, she is also helping to bring the excitement of exploring real-world chemistry into local high schools. She works with local high school teachers to design lab experiences that reinforce and compliment the chemistry concepts in the California State curriculum. Stanford Chemistry students take these activities to local high schools, providing hundreds of students the opportunity to work with enthusiastic young scientists while getting hands-on experience in chemistry. The program aims to demonstrate how chemistry relates to the ‘real world’ and to promote an appreciation for both science and higher education. -

Recent work includes a systematic review of COVID-19, RSV, and influenza vaccines in the New England Journal of Medicine, participation in NIH-funded RECOVER and ACTIV-6 studies, and projects using biomarkers and test-ordering strategies to optimize antibiotic use and reduce unnecessary testing.

Matthew P. Scott

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur research has been focused on the genetic regulation of animal development and its relation to birth defects, cancer, and neurodegeneration. We studied mechanisms and functions of Hedgehog (Hh) signaling, which controls cell fates and growth, in the context of normal development and brain cancer. We studied a neurodegenerative disease, Niemann-Pick C syndrome, that affects intracellular organelle movements and sterol homeostasis. Due to Dr. Scott's new job, the lab is no longer active.

John Michael Scull

Scull is a co-founding Managing Director of Southern Cross Venture Partners with offices in Palo Alto, Sydney and Shanghai (through a partnership with Softbank China Venture Capital). He is also currently an Investment Committee member of Sydney-based Blackbird Ventures. Previously he was a Venture Partner and Investment Committee member of the venture capital firm Allen & Buckeridge. He has served on the boards of several private and public companies and was CEO of both Macromind (which merged to become Macromedia and later acquired by Adobe) and PF Magic (acquired by the Learning Company). Earlier in his career he was a marketing executive at Apple where he helped launch the Macintosh personal computer and led Apple’s Desktop Publishing efforts. Scull received his MBA from Harvard University and Bachelor degree from University of Oklahoma.
He was born and raised in Indonesia and Singapore and enjoys travel, golf, swimming, listening to a good podcast while walking the dog, french wine, and the occasional margarita :) -
Susan Meyhak Seav

Clinical Assistant Professor (By courtesy), NeurosurgeryBioDr. Seav is a board-certified endocrinologist and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Endocrinology at Stanford and, by courtesy, the Department of Neurosurgery. She graduated from Harvard University with an honors degree in molecular and cellular biology before completing her medical education and residency at the University of California, San Diego. She then completed her endocrinology fellowship at Stanford University.
She has a special interest in disorders that involve the pituitary and adrenal glands such as acromegaly, Cushing disease, hypopituitarism, and functional adrenal adenomas. Dr. Seav is determined to provide her patients with personalized, evidence-based medicine that will allow them to live their best lives. In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Seav is also passionate about medical education and devoted a chief medical residency year teaching medical students, interns, and residents.
