    BioTom Wasow joined the Stanford faculty as an Assistant Professor of Linguistics and Philosophy in 1973. He was educated at Reed College (BA in mathematics, 1967) and MIT (PhD in Linguistics, 1972). Between college and graduate school, he was a Fulbright fellow in Germany. Prior to coming to Stanford, he taught at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts. His early research was on the theory of grammar, particularly syntax. Later, he did work in psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, and sociolinguistics. He is a fellow of both the Linguistic Society of America and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. At Stanford, he received the Dinkelspiel Award for contributions to undergraduate education, and was named a Bass Fellow in Undergraduate Education.

    Wasow served as Dean of Undergraduate Studies from 1987 to 1991, as Associate Dean for Graduate Policy in the office of the Dean of Research (1996-2000), as Chair of the Faculty Senate (2003-2004), and, after retiring from the faculty, as Academic Secretary to the University (2017-2024). He also chaired the committee that created the Symbolic Systems Program, and chaired that program for a total of thirteen years between 1992 and 2015.

    Aside from his work at Stanford, he has been active with organizations that provide housing and services to Bay Area people experiencing homelessness. He currently serves on the board of Abode Housing Development.

    BioDr. Waters is a board-certified, fellowship-trained neurosurgeon with the Neurosurgery Program at Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor of neurosurgery in the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Waters specializes in treating a wide range of spinal conditions. These treatments include surgery to relieve numbness or pain related to pressure on the spinal cord and procedures to repair or stabilize the spinal column (spine fusion). Her areas of expertise also include diagnosis and treatment of traumatic brain injury and brain and spinal cancers.

    Dr. Waters’ research experience includes helping to develop effective strategies for diagnosing
    and treating patients with different neurological cancers, including glioblastomas. As a subspecialty medical expert for spine and neurosurgery, she successfully advocated for insurance coverage of state-of-the-art, minimally invasive approaches to treating epilepsy and brain tumors.

    Dr. Waters has published her work in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Neurosurgery and the Journal of Neuro-Oncology. She has also authored and co-authored chapters in numerous books describing neurosurgical techniques and the diagnosis and treatment of various neurological conditions, including brain and spinal cord tumors.

    Dr. Waters is a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

    BioDr. Erin Watson is a board-certified clinical health psychologist and Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Stanford University School of Medicine. She is a member of Stanford Health Care’s GI Behavioral Medicine program, where she specializes in the intersection of psychological health, behavioral science, and gastrointestinal and liver disease.

    Dr. Watson’s clinical work focuses on helping patients navigate the emotional, behavioral, and lifestyle factors that influence medical illness. Her areas of expertise include health anxiety, stress and symptom management, health-behavior change, adjustment to chronic conditions, and the emerging specialty of psycho-hepatology. She uses practical, evidence-based approaches—including cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness-based interventions, and motivational interviewing—with lifestyle-medicine strategies to support long-term health and resilience. Her goal is to help patients feel more informed, supported, and empowered throughout their care.

    In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Watson is engaged in research to advance behavioral treatments for chronic pain and develop new psychological interventions for individuals living with chronic liver disease. She is a co-investigator on a National Institutes of Health–funded study examining effective treatment options for veterans with chronic pain and addiction. Her scholarly work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at regional and national conferences, including annual meetings of the American Psychological Association.

    Dr. Watson is a Fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Health Psychology and a member of the American Psychological Association, the Society for Health Psychology (Division 38), the Society of Behavioral Medicine, the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, and the Rome Foundation.

    BioKathleen Watson, Ph.D., currently serves as an instructor at Stanford University School of Medicine, specializing in Epidemiology and Clinical Research. She co-founded Microclinic International in 2007, where she served as Chief Operating Officer until 2012, focusing on socially-based health interventions for underserved communities.

    Dr. Watson's research encompasses various aspects of mental health and metabolism. She investigates the connection between insulin resistance and depression, using computational psychiatry to uncover insights into the interplay of metabolic factors in mental well-being. Additionally, her exploration of cognitive aging examines how metabolic alterations might impact cognitive decline and related disorders. Furthermore, her research in proteomics aims to identify potential biomarkers for severe major depressive disorder. Dr. Watson has recently become a part of the Stanford Autism Center for Excellence Data Core, where she works under the guidance of Dr. Booil Jo.

    BioRobert Eckles Swain Professor in Chemistry Robert Waymouth investigates new catalytic strategies to create useful new molecules, including bioactive polymers, synthetic fuels, and sustainable plastics. In one such breakthrough, Professor Waymouth and Professor Wender developed a new class of gene delivery agents.

    Born in 1960 in Warner Robins, Georgia, Robert Waymouth studied chemistry and mathematics at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia (B.S. and B.A., respectively, both summa cum laude, 1982). He developed an interest in synthetic and mechanistic organometallic chemistry during his doctoral studies in chemistry at the California Institute of Technology under Professor R.H. Grubbs (Ph.D., 1987). His postdoctoral research with Professor Piero Pino at the Institut fur Polymere, ETH Zurich, Switzerland, focused on catalytic hydrogenation with chiral metallocene catalysts. He joined the Stanford University faculty as assistant professor in 1988, becoming full professor in 1997 and in 2000 the Robert Eckles Swain Professor of Chemistry.

    Today, the Waymouth Group applies mechanistic principles to develop new concepts in catalysis, with particular focus on the development of organometallic and organic catalysts for the synthesis of complex macromolecular architectures. In organometallic catalysis, the group devised a highly selective alcohol oxidation catalyst that selectively oxidizes unprotected polyols and carbohydrates to alpha-hyroxyketones. In collaboration with Dr. James Hedrick of IBM, we have developed a platform of highly active organic catalysts and continuous flow reactors that provide access to polymer architectures that are difficult to access by conventional approaches.

    The Waymouth group has devised selective organocatalytic strategies for the synthesis of functional degradable polymers and oligomers that function as "molecular transporters" to deliver genes, drugs and probes into cells and live animals. These advances led to the joint discovery with the Wender group of a general, safe, and remarkably effective concept for RNA delivery based on a new class of synthetic cationic materials, Charge-Altering Releasable Transporters (CARTs). This technology has been shown to be effective for mRNA based cancer vaccines.

His research is on moral theory, with a particular focus on puzzles arising from the tension between morality's universality (it's about taking everyone into account) and its particularity (it's about how we relate to one another as individuals).

    BioDr. Weber directs the Neuromuscular Insight Lab. Dr. Weber's research seeks to develop quantitative markers of sensory and motor function, including pain, using machine-learning and advanced brain, spinal cord, and musculoskeletal magnetic resonance imaging. Dr. Weber aims to use these techniques to better understand the neuropathology of neurological and musculoskeletal conditions and discover more effective treatments and preventative strategies.

    BioGraham Webster is a research scholar in the Program on Geopolitics, Technology, and Governance and editor-in-chief of the DigiChina Project at the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University. He researches, writes, and teaches on technology policy in China and US-China relations.

    Before bringing DigiChina to Stanford in 2019, he was its cofounder and coordinating editor at New America, where he was a China digital economy fellow. From 2012 to 2017, Webster worked for Yale Law School as a senior fellow and lecturer responsible for the Paul Tsai China Center’s Track II dialogues between the United States and China and co-taught seminars on contemporary China and Chinese law and policy. While there, he was an affiliated fellow with the Yale Information Society Project, a visiting scholar at China Foreign Affairs University, and a Transatlantic Digital Debates fellow with New America and the Global Public Policy Institute in Berlin. He was previously an adjunct instructor teaching East Asian politics at New York University and a Beijing-based journalist writing on the Internet in China for CNET News.

    In recent years, Webster's writing has been published in MIT Technology Review, Foreign Affairs, Slate, The Wire China, The Information, Tech Policy Press, and Foreign Policy. He has been quoted by The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Bloomberg and spoken to NPR and BBC World Service. Webster has testified before the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission and speaks regularly at universities and conferences in North America, East Asia, and Europe. His chapter, "What Is at Stake in the US–China Technological Relationship?" appears in The China Questions II (Harvard University Press, 2022).

    Webster holds a bachelor's in journalism and international studies from Northwestern University and a master's in East Asian studies from Harvard University. He took doctoral coursework in political science at the University of Washington and language training at Tsinghua University, Peking University, Stanford University, and Kanda University of International Studies.

    BioRisa Wechsler is the Humanities and Sciences Professor and the Director of the Kavli Institute of Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology. She is also Professor of Physics (H&S) and Professor of Particle Physics & Astrophysics (SLAC), Director of the Center for Decoding the Universe, and an Associate Director at Stanford Data Science. She is a cosmologist whose work investigates some of the biggest outstanding questions about our universe — how it formed, what it is made of, how it is structured, and what its future holds.

    Her research focuses on understanding the evolution of galaxies, the large-scale structure of the universe, and the nature of dark matter and dark energy. She uses large numerical simulations, theoretical models, and the largest observed maps of the universe to explore these forces that shape the cosmos. Her recent work also investigates the formation and cosmological context of the Milky Way and probes dark matter through small-scale cosmic structure, and explores how data science and AI/ML can drive new understanding. Wechsler has played key leadership roles in major international collaborations including the Dark Energy Survey, Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, and Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and time, a decade-long survey that will reveal the dynamic universe in unprecedented detail. She is recently involved in the Via Survey, which will map the Milky Way at high precision to probe dark matter physics in new ways.

    Wechsler is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

    BioDr. Wei was born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan. He went to Stanford for his undergraduate studies in Biology and earned his medical degree at Weill Cornell Medical College. Unable to stay far from the Bay Area, he returned to Stanford where he completed his residency in internal medicine and subsequently his fellowship in gastroenterology. Dr. Wei has specific interests in colorectal cancer and Barrett’s esophagus surveillance as well as reflux diagnosis and management. He has an interest in endoscopic resection of large polyps and had received training under Dr. Shai Friedland, a world expert in this field. Dr. Wei work focuses on evaluating new tools, technologies and techniques in gastrointestinal cancer surveillance and management. He has been involved in running several trials in endoscopic management of polyps and evaluating artificial intelligence applications in gastroenterology. His work has been published in American Journal of Gastroenterology, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Clinical Endoscopy, VideoGIE, and Digestive Diseases and Sciences. He was formerly an Associate Editor for the ACG Case Report Journal (2020-2022) and was on the Board of the Northern California Society of Clinical Gastroenterology. When not in clinic or in endoscopy, Dr. Wei enjoys spending time with his family. He and his family enjoy traveling and exploring new restaurants.

    BioDr. Brooke Weigel is a marine ecologist. Her research focuses on the ecology, physiology, and genomics of marine algae and microbial communities in the ocean. She is particularly interested in the feedbacks between climate change, kelp forests, microbes & carbon cycling in the ocean. Her research uses a variety of tools and methods, including field and lab experiments, genomics, bioinformatics, algal culturing, scientific scuba diving, ecophysiology, and biogeochemistry. Overall, her esearch aims to improve our understanding of coastal marine ecosystems with the overall goal of ensuring a healthy, productive, and resilient ocean. The Weigel Lab is based at Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove, CA.

    Having been trained as a political scientist in Frankfurt/Main, Freiburg, and London,
    Hans N. Weiler has been a professor of education and political science at Stanford
    University since 1965, where he was instrumental in developing Stanford’s program
    in international development education (SIDEC). He was director of UNESCO’s
    International Institute for Educational Planning in Paris (IIEP) in the 1970s and has
    served as a consultant to a number of international organizations (including the
    World Bank and the African Development Bank), foundations and national
    governments in Europe, Africa, and South East Asia. At Stanford, he served as
    Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, as a University Fellow, and as Director of the
    Center for European Studies. He was a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in
    the Behavioral Sciences, and has been awarded research fellowships and grants
    by, among others, the British Council, the Japan Society for the Promotion of
    Science, the Spencer Foundation, the Thyssen Foundation, the Friedrich Ebert
    Foundation, and the Deutsche Bank Foundation. In 1993, he was appointed a
    professor of comparative politics and elected the first Rektor (president) of Viadrina
    European University at Frankfurt (Oder), a position from which he retired in the fall
    of 1999. He chaired the Commission on Higher Education of the State of Saxony
    (1999-2002) and was instrumental in the founding and development of the Hertie
    School of Governance in Berlin from 2002 to 2009. He has served in a variety of
    advisory and consulting roles in German and European higher education between
    1999 and 2014. From 2014 to 2017, he served as Stanford’s Academic Secretary to
    the University.

    He has served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the (private) Hertie School
    of Governance in Berlin, of the international boards of the Free University of Berlin
    and the Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien, of the Advisory Board of the Center for Higher
    Education Development (CHE) in Germany, and of the Global Scientific Committee
    for UNESCO’s Forum on Higher Education, Research and Knowledge. His service
    as an evaluator includes the “Excellence Initiative” in German higher education, the
    Berlin Social Science Research Center (Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin), the
    University of Freiburg, and various award competitions on research, teaching
    quality, and teacher education. His recent speaking engagements have included
    invited addresses in New York, Paris, Vienna, Budapest, San Francisco,
    Heidelberg, Berlin, Frankfurt/Main, Kuala Lumpur, Trieste, Johannesburg, Cape
    Town, Munich, Istanbul, and Stanford. He has been awarded the Order of Merit of
    the Republic of Poland (Commander’s Cross), of the Federal Republic of Germany
    (Bundesverdienstkreuz I. Kl.), and of the State of Brandenburg, as well as an
    honorary doctorate by Viadrina University, and honorary citizenship by the city of
    Frankfurt (Oder). His publications deal with the politics of educational change, the
    international politics of knowledge production, and the dynamics of reform and nonreform
    in higher education.

    BioAllen S. Weiner is an international legal scholar with expertise in such wide-ranging fields as international and national security law, the law of war, international conflict resolution, and international criminal law (including transitional justice). His scholarship focuses on international law and the response to the contemporary security threats of international terrorism, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and situations of widespread humanitarian atrocities. He also explores assertions by states of “war powers” under international law, domestic law, and just war theory in the context of asymmetric armed conflicts between states and nonstate armed groups and the response to terrorism. In the realm of international conflict resolution, his highly multidisciplinary work analyzes the barriers to resolving violent political conflicts, with a particular focus on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Weiner’s scholarship is deeply informed by experience; he practiced international law in the U.S. Department of State for more than a decade advising government policymakers, negotiating international agreements, and representing the United States in litigation before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the International Court of Justice, and the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal.

    Senior Lecturer Weiner is director of the Stanford Program in International and Comparative Law and director of the Stanford Center on International Conflict and Negotiation. Before joining the Stanford Law School faculty in 2003, Weiner served as legal counselor to the U.S. Embassy in The Hague and attorney adviser in the Office of the Legal Adviser of the U.S. Department of State. He was a law clerk to Judge John Steadman of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.

    BioAmir Weiner’s research concerns Soviet history with an emphasis on the interaction between totalitarian politics, ideology, nationality, and society. His first book, Making Sense of War analyzed the role and impact of the cataclysm of the Second World War on Soviet society and politics. His current project, Wild West, Window to the West engages the territories between the Baltic and Black Seas that were annexed by the Soviet Union in 1939-40, from the initial occupation to present. Professor Weiner has taught courses on modern Russian history; the Second World War; the Origins of Totalitarianism; War and Society in Modern Europe; Modern Ukrainian History; and History and Memory.

    BioBarry R. Weingast is the Ward C. Krebs Family Professor, Department of Political Science, and a Senior Fellow, Hoover Institution. He served as Chair, Department of Political Science, from 1996 through 2001. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

    Weingast’s research focuses on the political foundation of markets, economic reform, and regulation. He has written extensively on problems of political economy of development, federalism and decentralization, legal institutions and the rule of law, and democracy. Weingast is co-author of Violence and Social Orders: A Conceptual Framework for Interpreting Recorded Human History (with Douglass C. North and John Joseph Wallis, 2009, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press) and Analytic Narratives (1998, Princeton). He edited (with Donald Wittman) The Oxford Handbook of Political Economy (Oxford University Press, 2006). Weingast has won numerous awards, including the William H. Riker Prize, the Heinz Eulau Prize (with Ken Shepsle), the Franklin L. Burdette Pi Sigma Alpha Award (with Kenneth Schultz), and the James L. Barr Memorial Prize in Public Economics.

    BioDr. Thomas Weiser is a general, emergency, and trauma surgeon, and surgical intensivist. He treats and cares for injured patients and those with acute surgical emergencies as well as manages critically ill surgical patients in the Intensive Care Unit.

    His research has focused on evaluating the role surgical care plays in the delivery of health services in resource poor settings, in particular low and middle income countries. He is interested in barriers to access and provision of surgical care, the quality of surgical services, and outcomes research as well as the science of implementation, how improvements can be made, and how to strengthen compliance with best practices and change behaviors for the better. He also has an interest in domestic policy as it relates to trauma outcomes, trauma systems, insurance coverage and costs of care, and firearm violence.

    Dr. Weiser's efforts have led to improvements in the safety and reliability of surgical service, the quality of surgical care delivered globally, and improvements team dynamics, function, and communication. He works closely with Lifebox, a nonprofit focused on improving surgical and anesthetic safety worldwide, where he was previously the Consulting Medical Officer. Lifebox delivers programs throughout the world in combination with local partners and includes the procurement and distribution of low cost devices to improve the safety of care (including pulse oximeters for the routine monitoring of patients undergoing anesthesia and surgical headlights to safeguard care during power outage) and Clean Cut, a surgical infection prevention and control program that has reduced complications by up to 50%. This work safeguards millions of surgical patients every year.

    From 2006-2009, he was part of the World Health Organization’s Safe Surgery Saves Lives program where he quantified the global volume of surgery and created, implemented, evaluated, and promoted the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist. He was part of the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery, the World Bank Disease Control Priorities Program, and a Gates Grand Challenge awardee.

    From 2022-2026 he was the Program Director of Surgery: Assess/Validate/Expand (SAVE) at Wellcome Leap. His current research efforts aim to accelerate computer vision models for quantifying surgical performance and identifying mechanisms to predict patient recovery trajectories following surgery.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsAs a physician-scientist I work to understand the genetic basis of cardiovascular disease and the transcriptional and epigenomic mechanisms of atherosclerosis. My work is focused across four main areas of cardiovascular genetics and mechanisms of coronary artery disease and smooth muscle biology:

    1.Vascular smooth muscle specific ADAR1 mediated RNA editing of double stranded RNA and activation of the double stranded RNA receptor MDA5 in coronary artery disease and vascular calcification
    2.Defining on single cell resolution the cellular and epigenomic features of human vascular disease across vascular beds of differing embryonic origin
    3.CRISPRi screening with targeted perturb seq (TAPseq) to identify novel CAD genes in human coronary artery smooth muscle cells
    4.Investigation of the epigenetic and molecular basis of coronary artery disease and smooth muscle cell transition in mice with conditional smooth muscle genetic deletion of CAD genes Pdgfd and Sox9

    My work is focused on discovery of causal mechanisms of disease through leveraging human genetics with sophisticated molecular biology, single cell sequencing technologies, and mouse models of disease. This work attempts to apply multiple scientific research arms to ultimately lead to novel understandings of vascular disease and discover important new therapeutic approaches for drug discovery.

    BioDr. Andy Y. Wen joined the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine in 2019. He received his B.A. degree in Molecular Biology & Biochemistry at Rutgers University, and his medical degree from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He completed a Pediatrics Residency Training Program at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center and a Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Training Program at the University of California Los Angeles.

    After briefly working for Kaiser Permanente Southern California Permanente Medical Group, Dr. Wen joined the Division of Pediatric Critical Care at NYU School of Medicine. He assumed the role of Bellevue Hospital PICU medical director and helped to expand Bellevue's Pediatric Trauma Program and Pediatric Critical Care Transport Services for the New York City (NYC) public hospital system, NYC Health & Hospitals. During the 2014 to 2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, Dr. Wen was a member of the Special Pathogens Program at Bellevue Hospital, which was one of only four institutions in the US to treat a patient with Ebola and helped established the National Ebola Training and Education Center (NETEC).

    While at UCLA, Dr. Wen received a T32 Training Grant to perform research investigating the role of transcription factor CREB in innate immune function using a murine model for AML. At NYU, his research projects included analyzing transfusion practices in the PICU, quality improvement projects targeting patients at high risk for unplanned extubation, and exploring the utility of NIRS as an early predictor of seizure activity. Dr. Wen is a member of Pediatric Acute Lung Injury & Sepsis Investigators (PALISI) and has been involved in multi-center studies looking at critical care patients with Bronchiolitis and COVID-19. Dr. Wen is the USA Editor for Journal of Pediatric Intensive Care and has reviewed abstracts for PAS, SCCM, and AMIA. His educational efforts have included teaching Pediatric Fundamental Critical Care Support (PFCCS) courses, helping develop a Pediatric Residency Simulation course curriculum, and helping develop a Point-of-Care Ultrasound course for critical care advanced practice providers.

    At Stanford University School of Medicine, Dr. Wen is in charge of Regional Pediatric Critical Care Outreach with a goal to promote medical education and expand the Stanford Children’s Health network to improve access for sick children in need of high quality care. Dr. Wen provides clinical services at both John Muir Medical Center and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital.

    BioLeif Wenar is a political philosopher. After receiving his AB at Stanford, he earned his PhD at Harvard, worked in Britain, and returned to Stanford in 2020.

    He is the author of Blood Oil: Tyrants, Violence, and the Rules that Run the World and the author-meets-critics volume Beyond Blood Oil: Philosophy, Policy, and the Future. He is also the author of the entries for ‘John Rawls’ and ‘Rights’ in The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. His articles have appeared in Mind, Analysis, Philosophy & Public Affairs, Ethics, The Journal of Political Philosophy, The Columbia Law Review, and The Philosopher’s Annual. He co-edited Giving Well: The Ethics of Philanthropy, as well as an autobiographical volume by the economist FA Hayek.

    He has been a Visiting Professor at the Stanford Center on Ethics and Society, a fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, the William H. Bonsall Visiting Professor in the Stanford Philosophy Department, a Laurance S. Rockefeller Fellow and a Visiting Professor at Princeton’s University Center for Human Values, a Visiting Professor at the Princeton Department of Politics, a Fellow of the Program on Justice and the World Economy at the Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs, a Faculty Fellow at the Center for Ethics and Public Affairs at The Murphy Institute of Political Economy, and a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University School of Philosophy.

    His public writing has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, Foreign Affairs, and the playbill for the White Light Festival at Lincoln Center. In London, he served for several years on the Mayor’s Policing Ethics Panel, which advises the Mayor and the Metropolitan Police on issues such as digital surveillance and the use of force.

    BioDr. M. Brandon Westover is a board-certified, fellowship-trained epilepsy specialist, clinical neurophysiologist, and neurologist with Stanford Health Care. He is also a professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine and director of the Stanford Epilepsy Center.

    Dr. Westover specializes in caring for adults with epilepsy and other neurological conditions. He focuses on developing automated tools that improve the quality and reach of his patients' care. He also treats patients with life-threatening unrelenting seizures (status epilepticus), reduced blood flow to the brain (cerebral ischemia), and reduced oxygen to the brain (anoxic brain injury). In addition, he helps patients experiencing delirium, seizures, and sleep disorders.

    Dr. Westover's research develops artificial intelligence technology to protect and improve brain health. His interests include predicting seizures and detecting and forecasting disorders of memory, cognition, and consciousness—such as delirium and coma—in older adults. His work has also used deep learning to estimate the risk of developing epilepsy after a brain injury from brain-wave recordings (electroencephalograms, or EEGs).

    Dr. Westover has published his research in leading peer-reviewed journals, including Neurology, JAMA Neurology, Annals of Neurology, Epilepsia, the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, and Lancet Digital Health. He has presented his work at international, national, and regional meetings, including the annual meetings of the American Epilepsy Society, the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society, the American Academy of Neurology, and SLEEP.

    BioJohn P. Weyant is Professor of Management Science and Engineering, Professor of Energy Science & Engineering, and Director of the Energy Modeling Forum (EMF) at Stanford University. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Precourt Institute for Energy and an an affiliated faculty member of the Stanford School of Earth, Environment and Energy Sciences, the Woods Institute for the Environment, and the Freeman-Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford. His current research focuses on analysis of multi-sector, multi-region coupled human and earth systems dynamics, global change systems analysis, energy technology assessment, and models for strategic planning.

    Weyant was a founder and serves as chairman of the Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium (IAMC), a seventeen-year old collaboration among over 60 member institutions from around the world.     Weyant was awarded the US Association for Energy Economics’ 2008 Adelmann-Frankel award for unique and innovative contributions to the field of energy economics and the award for outstanding lifetime contributions to the Profession for 2017 from the International Association for Energy Economics, and a Life Time Achievement award from the Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium in 2018.     BioElliott White Jr. is an assistant professor of Earth System Science. He is a coastal ecosystem scientist that studies the effects of saltwater intrusion and sea level rise (SWISLR) on vegetation in the coastal land margin. His research experience in wetlands spans the North American Coastal Plain of the US, in addition to constructed prairie potholes in Iowa. His interdisciplinary approach to research draws from ecology, hydrology, biogeochemistry, and remote sensing. He is expanding his research to also understand the effects of SWISLR on humans living in the coastal zone.     BioDr. Aileen Whyte, a licensed psychologist in California, brings over two decades of specialized expertise to the treatment of eating disorders in young people. Beyond her clinical practice, Dr. Whyte actively works on implementing strategies to expand the reach of evidence-based treatments for eating disorders, aiming to make these best-practice interventions more accessible to a wider population.

    Dr Whyte serves as the Director of the Stanford Outpatient Child & Adolescent Eating Disorders Clinic, where she provides treatment to young people with eating disorders and provides supervision to psychology and psychiatry fellows. Dr Whyte is a certified practitioner and consultant in Family-Based Treatment (FBT) for eating disorders. She serves as a study therapist in NIMH-sponsored randomized clinical trials focused on examining FBT and related adaptations.

    In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Dr. Whyte has led multiple seminars, workshops, and training sessions dedicated to the treatment of eating disorders. She provides ongoing training and consultation in FBT, reaching diverse audiences, including multidisciplinary clinicians, psychologists, and psychiatrists, within the US and internationally.

    Dr. Whyte earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the New School for Social Research in New York. Her research and clinical interests converge on the implementation and dissemination of evidence-based treatments for eating disorders.

    BioJennifer Widom is the Frederick Emmons Terman Dean of the School of Engineering and the Fletcher Jones Professor in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. She served as Computer Science Department Chair from 2009-2014 and School of Engineering Senior Associate Dean from 2014-2016. Jennifer received her Bachelor's degree from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 1982 and her Computer Science Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1987. She was a Research Staff Member at the IBM Almaden Research Center before joining the Stanford faculty in 1993. Her research interests span many aspects of nontraditional data management.     BioSimon Wiederhold is a Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution for the 2024/2025 academic year. He is Professor of Labor Economics at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and Senior Research Advisor at the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH), where he leads the research group on Education, Skills, and the Labor Market.

    Wiederhold's research focuses on labor and education economics, particularly the formation and impact of skills. He investigates the determinants of skill development, including family background, formal education, and on-the-job training, and examines the role of skills in labor market success throughout workers' careers. He also investigates how inequalities in the education system arise. Methodologically, Wiederhold emphasizes rigorous research designs using modern microeconometric methods to provide evidence-based policy recommendations.

    He has published extensively in leading journals such as the Journal of Political Economy, Journal of the European Economic Association, and American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics. His contributions to the field have been recognized with awards including the CESifo Young Affiliate Award, the ifo Research Award, and the CIDER Public Science Award. His joint work with Hoover Fellow Eric Hanushek on returns to skills worldwide has won the Best Paper Award of the European Economic Review.

    Wiederhold held previous academic positions at the Catholic University Eichstätt-Ingolstadt and the ifo Institute, and spent extended research visits at Harvard University and Duke University. He holds a doctorate in economics from the University of Jena, where he also studied. He actively contributes to public debates on education and labor market policies, providing numerous policy reports for the European Commission and other organizations.     Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe Wieman group’s research generally focuses on the nature of expertise in science and engineering, particularly physics, and how that expertise is best learned, measured, and taught. This involves a range of approaches, including individual cognitive interviews, laboratory experiments, and classroom interventions with controls for comparisons. We are also looking at how different classroom practices impact the attitudes and learning of different demographic groups.

    BioKären Wigen teaches Japanese history and the history of cartography at Stanford. A geographer by training, she earned her doctorate at the University of California at Berkeley. Her first book, The Making of a Japanese Periphery, 1750-1920 (1995), mapped the economic transformation of southern Nagano Prefecture during the heyday of the silk industry. Her second book, A Malleable Map: Geographies of Restoration in Central Japan, 1600-1912 (2010), returned to the ground of that study, exploring the roles of cartography, chorography, and regionalism in the making of modern Shinano.

    An abiding interest in world history led her to co-author The Myth of Continents (1997) with Martin Lewis, and to co-direct the "Oceans Connect" project at Duke University. She also introduced a forum on oceans in history for the American Historical Review and co-edited Seascapes: Maritime Histories, Littoral Cultures, and Transoceanic Exchanges (2007) with Jerry Bentley and Renate Bridenthal. Her latest project is another collaboration, Cartographic Japan: A History in Maps, with co-editors Sugimoto Fumiko and Cary Karacas ( University of Chicago Press, forthcoming 2016).

    Benny Starr's most recent solo project, A Water Album, was not just a milestone in his career but a significant historical moment. Recorded live with his bandmates, The Four20s, at Charleston Music Hall and released on Juneteenth 2019, it marked Benny Starr as the first Hip-Hop artist to perform at Spoleto Festival USA. The album itself was a triumph and a testament to his talent, earning the "South Carolina's Best Album" 2019 title by the Free Times, solidifying Benny Starr's place as a visionary independent artist in the South.

    In 2020, Native Son, a duo of Benny Starr and harmonious singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Rodrick Cliche, was formed. Together, they are redefining what it means to be dynamic while remaining highly respected. Their music, which combines the comforting allure of Southern breakfast at Grandma's house with the triumphant command of a revolutionary's chant, is a sonic resonance that is both decadent and nourishing. This unique blend of their musical influences sets them apart from other artists and makes their sound a must-listen for any music lover.

    Native Son's most recent release, "The Land," is a rallying cry that echoes the injustices of Black Legacy Farmers at the hands of the USDA and is part of an ongoing partnership with The Acres of Ancestry Initiative/Black Agrarian Fund and The Black Farmers Appeal: Cancel Pigford Debt Campaign. As a part of the ongoing collaboration, Native Son screened "Restoration: A Concert Film" on Juneteenth 2020. In the fall, "Restoration" was also released for a limited-time viewing to coincide with the Justice for Black Farmers Act of 2020, introduced by U.S. Senators Cory Booker, Elizabeth Warren, and Kirsten Gillibrand on November 30th. To date, "Restoration" has been screened at the Pan African Film Festival, WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival, Seattle Black Film Festival, Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival & Lecture Series, Nevada City Film Festival, Rhode Island Black Film Festival, Las Vegas Black Film Festival, Nice International Film Festival, and more.

    The U.S. Water Alliance recognized Benny Starr's commitment to the creative and artistic process by naming him their inaugural One Water Artist-in-Residence in October 2020. During his 18-month residency and subsequent tenure as Senior Fellow of Arts & Culture, Benny infused arts and cultural strategies into innovative thinking, problem-solving, and programming. In 2021, Grist named him one of their 50 Fixers, highlighting his leadership in climate, sustainability, and equity. In 2023, Benny launched Watercolor Creative, an umbrella for artistic projects, creative strategy, and social practice work with creators, communities, and equity-centered partners, furthering his mission to use creativity for justice and kinship.

    Benny later served as a creative strategist with Communities First Fund, embedding arts and culture into their initiatives and programming. He is currently a U.S. Cultural Policy Fellow at Stanford University, examining the intersections of arts, culture, and civic infrastructure.

    BioGail Wight holds an MFA in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute where she was a Javits Fellow, and a BFA from the Studio for Interrelated Media at Massachusetts College of Art. She has an extensive international exhibition record, with over a dozen solo exhibits throughout North America and Great Britain, and her work has been collected by numerous institutions including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Among her many artist residencies are western Australia’s Symbiotica, Art & Archaeology at Stonehenge, the Rockefeller Foundation in Bellagio, and San Francisco’s Exploratorium. Her work is represented by Patricia Sweetow Gallery in San Francisco.
