    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI use AI models of of exploratory and social learning in order to better understand early human learning and development, and conversely, I use our understanding of early human learning to make robust AI models that learn in exploratory and social ways. Based on this, I develop AI-powered learning tools for children, geared in particular towards the education of those with developmental issues such as the Autism Spectrum Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, in the mold of my work on the Autism Glass Project. My formal graduate training in pure mathematics involved extending partial differential equation theory in cases involving the propagation of waves through complex media such as the space around a black hole. Since then, I have transitioned to the use of machine learning in developing both learning tools for children with developmental disorders and AI and cognitive models of learning.

    BioStephen Haber is the A.A. and Jeanne Welch Milligan Professor in the School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University, the Peter and Helen Bing Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, and senior fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. In addition, he is a professor of political science, professor of history, and professor of economics (by courtesy).

    Haber has spent his career investigating why the world distribution of income so uneven. His papers have been published in economics, history, political science, and law journals.
    He is the author of five books and the editor of six more. Haber’s most recent books include Fragile by Design with Charles Calomiris (Princeton University Press), which examines how governments and industry incumbents often craft banking regulatory policies in ways that stifle competition and increase systemic risk. The Battle Over Patents (Oxford University Press), a volume edited with Naomi Lamoreaux, documents the development of US-style patent systems and the political fights that have shaped them.

    His latest project focuses on a long-standing puzzle in the social sciences: why are prosperous democracies not randomly distributed across the planet, but rather, are geographically clustered? Haber and his coauthors answer this question by using geospatial tools to simulate the ecological conditions that shaped pre-industrial food production and trade. They then employ machine learning methods to elucidate the relationship between ecological conditions and the levels of economic development that emerged across the globe over the past three centuries.

    Haber holds a Ph.D. in history from UCLA and has been on the Stanford faculty since 1987.
    From 1995 to 1998, he served as associate dean for the social sciences and director of Graduate Studies of Stanford’s School of Humanities and Sciences. He is among Stanford’s most distinguished teachers, having been awarded every teaching prize Stanford has to offer.

    BioDr. Laura Hack is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Director of Novel & Precision Neurotherapeutics at the Stanford Center for Precision Mental Health and Wellness, Director of the Stanford Translational Precision Mental Health Clinic, and Deputy Director of the Precision Neuromodulation Clinic (PNC) within the VA Palo Alto Health Care System. Dr. Hack's translational research program focuses on identifying bioclinical subtypes of depression and comorbid stress-related disorders and testing mechanistically-guided treatments for these subtypes. Dr. Hack studies treatments spanning repurposed medications, such as pramipexole and guanfacine, neuromodulation techniques, ketamine, MDMA, and psilocybin. Clinically, she specializes in delivering novel treatments, including repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and ketamine, to patients suffering from treatment-resistant depression and comorbid stress-related disorders.

    BioDr. Francois Haddad, MD is a Clinical Professor of Medicine that specializes in the field of cardio-vascular imaging, pulmonary hypertension, advanced heart failure and transplantation. Dr. Haddad has over 18 years of practice in the field of cardiology. He directs Stanford Cardiovascular Institute Biomarker and Phenotypic Core Laboratory dedicated to translational studies in cardiovascular medicine. The laboratory focuses on (1) identifying early biomarkers of heart failure and aging, (2) bioengineering approaches to cardiovascular disease modeling and (3) novel informatic approach for the detection and risk stratification of disease. He is involved is several precision medicine initiatives in health including the Project Baseline, the Integrated Personalized Omics Profiling Initiative, the Athletic screening program at Stanford and the Strong-D cardiac rehabilitation initiative in individuals with diabetes mellitus.

    BioLindsey Haddock, MD, MAEd, is a geriatrician and clinician-educator with a master's degree in education. Her research in medical education focuses on learning in the clinical workplace and evaluation of workplace-based assessments. She is the co-director of Primary Care and Population Health's Quality Education Scholarship Training program (QuEST), and the associate program director of the fellowship in Geriatrics. She works clinically in Stanford Senior Care Clinic and the inpatient geriatrics service.

    BioHeather Hadlock studies 18th- and 19th-century French and Italian opera, with a focus on changing norms for representing masculinity in opera on nineteenth century stages and in contemporary productions of classic operas. Her research repertoire encompasses Italian bel canto opera, Berlioz, Offenbach, operatic masculinities, opera in the age of its digital mediation, and divas and technology. She approaches operatic voices and performance through feminist theories of difference, vocality, and embodiment; gender and sexuality studies; and dynamics of adaptation between opera, literature, and video. She has directed Stanford's interdisciplinary Program in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and served on the Phiip Brett Award committee and board of the AMS LGBTQ Study Group. She serves on the editorial board of the journal Nineteenth-Century Music.

    BioDr. Kurt Hafer is a board-certified physician and Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) practicing Primary Care Internal Medicine exclusively at Stanford Concierge Medicine.

    Dr. Hafer grew up in Chapel Hill, NC and attended Pomona College, where he received his undergraduate degree in Psychology. After completing post-baccalaureate pre-medical coursework at the University of Michigan (UM) in Ann Arbor, he worked as a neuro-endocrine peptide researcher at UM.

    In 1999, Dr. Hafer graduated from The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed a Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC) in San Jose in 2002. Between 2002 to 2012 he was a Teaching Attending Physician at SCVMC as well as an adjunct Stanford physician, training medical students and residents in Internal Medicine.

    Dr. Hafer joined Stanford in 2012 as the founding Medical Director of the Stanford Primary Care, Portola Valley Clinic -- Stanford's first new primary care clinic in many years. His five years of leadership at the Portola clinic included incorporating the latest technologies into primary care, adopting active population health panel management, LEAN management practices, embedded specialists and evidence-based, best-care practices as a viable model for the future of Stanford Primary Care.

    In January 2017, Dr. Hafer joined Stanford Concierge Medicine as Medical Director. In addition to caring for his patients, his duties include directing the clinic and expanding clinic offerings in mental health, wellness, and piloting Primary Care Genetics and Pharmacogenomics screening programs as a test bed for Stanford Primary Care.

    While at Stanford, Dr. Hafer has served as a lecturer for the American College of Physician's Internal Medicine Maintenance of Certification Course held in San Francisco, and has been a Reviewer for the American College of Physicians on multiple projects. He has served on numerous Stanford Healthcare committees and worked with teams on numerous projects, including Stanford's Primary Care 2.0 Redesign, Hypertension Center of Excellence Clinical Integration Team, The Virtual Hypertension Monitoring Project, and Stanford's Primary Care Precision Health program design team. He has directed pilots of TeleHealth phone and video visits, integration of specialty care MDs into our primary care clinics. He led a successful Clinical Effectiveness Leadership Training (CELT) project using clinical pharmacists embedded in primary care clinics to more effectively manage diabetes and high blood pressure between MD visits. He has also served as the Physician Leader for Stanford's Realizing Improvement through Team Empowerment (RITE) Quality Improvement Program.

    He currently serves as a Physician Member and Chair (2023) of the Global Executive Services (GES) Network Steering Committee, part of the Vizient University Health System Consortium, a national group of ~200 members of academic medical centers with Executive Health or Concierge Medicine services.

    When not caring for patients, Dr. Hafer enjoys spending time outdoors with family and friends. He is married to a Stanford University History Professor, has a daughter who graduated from Stanford and UCLA Medical School (now a resident at UCSF), as well as a son who is studying computer science at Stanford. He is an avid lifelong cyclist (road and MTB, logging over 8k miles annually), hiker, has a passion for tinkering with vintage Datsuns and enjoys wearing vintage watches.

    Dr. Hafer believes that a combination of truly knowing his patients as individuals, excellent patient-physician communication, and comprehensive preventive care allows him to provide exceptional care for his patients.

    Bio'Esiteli Hafoka received her PhD and MA in Religious Studies from Stanford University, and her BA in Religious Studies and Ancient History from UC Riverside. Her research introduces a novel theoretical approach, Angafakafonua as Tongan epistemology, to understand Tongan collective identity in America. Her dissertation identifies religious threads connecting 19th c. Methodist Christianity, Mormonism, Tongan Crip Gang members in Utah, and sacred education spaces to reveal the ways Tongans navigate their racial identity in America through a religious epistemology. She has co-authored a chapter with Finau Sina Tovo titled, "Mana as Sacred Space: A Talanoa of Tongan American College Students in a Pacific Studies Learning Community Classroom" in Disciplinary Futures: Sociology in Conversation with American, Ethnic, and Indigenous Studies, NYU Press 2023.

Our current work focuses on determining the role of altered mitochondrial dynamics in sepsis-induced multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Specifically, we focus on understanding the mechanisms that mediate derangements in mitochondrial fission and autophagy in sepsis.

    BioJens Hainmueller is the Kimberly Glenn Professor in Political Science and Director of Graduate Studies of the Department of Political Science at Stanford University. He is the Faculty Co-Director of the Stanford Immigration Policy Lab that is focused on the design and evaluation of immigration and integration policies and programs.

    His research interests include statistical methods, causal inference, immigration, and political economy. He has published over 65 articles, many of them in top general science journals (e.g. Science, Nature, PNAS) and top field journals in political science, statistics, economics, and business. His statistical methods are used by organizations to conduct causal inferences in various settings. He has also published multiple open source software packages. His research has received funding from organizations such as Schmidt Futures, the Robin Hood Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Health, and the National Bureau of Economic Research. His research has won various awards including the Gosnell Prize for Excellence in Political Methodology, the Warren Miller Prize, the Robert H. Durr award, and the Emerging Scholar award by the Society of Political Methodology. He was selected as an Andrew Carnegie Fellow and inducted as a Fellow of the Society of Political Methodology. He has received an honorary degree from the European University Institute (EUI).

    Hainmueller received his PhD from Harvard University and also studied at the London School of Economics, Brown University, and the University of Tübingen. Before joining Stanford, he served on the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Hall combines large-scale quantitative datasets with tools from economics, statistics, and machine learning to understand how to design democratic systems of governance, with a focus on American elections and legislatures as well as the governance of online communities.

As a certified Epic Physician Builder since residency, she has continued to work on Electronic Medical Record (EMR) optimization through fellowship. Combining her interests in ultrasound and clinical informatics, she has specifically focused on improvements in the EMR user interface, physician workflow/efficiency, patient safety, and billing/compliance.

    BioI’m an applied economist with interests in employment, technology, competition, and economic policy in the aggregate economy and in particular markets.

    I served as President of the American Economic Association for the year 2010. I presented the Ely Lecture to the Association in 2001 and served as Vice President in 2005. I’m a member of the National Academy of Sciences, Distinguished Fellow of the AEA, and fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Econometric Society, and the Society of Labor Economists.

    Along with my Hoover Institution colleague Alvin Rabushka, I developed a framework for equitable and efficient consumption taxation. Our article in the Wall Street Journal in December 1981 was the starting point for an upsurge of interest in consumption taxation. Our book, The Flat Tax (free download from the Hoover Institution Press) spells out the proposal. We were recognized in Money magazine’s Hall of Fame for our contributions to financial innovation.

    Marc Lieberman and I have a college textbook, Economics: Principles and Applications, now in its sixth edition.

    I also served as director of the research program on economic fluctuations and growth of the National Bureau of Economic Research from 1977 through 2013. I continue to serve as chairman of the Bureau's Committee on Business Cycle Dating, which maintains the semiofficial chronology of the U.S. business cycle.

    I have advised a number of government agencies on national economic policy, including the Justice Department, the Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve Board, and the Congressional Budget Office, where I serve on the Advisory Committee. I served on the National Presidential Advisory Committee on Productivity. I have testified on numerous occasions before congressional committees concerning national economic policy.

    Before coming to Stanford’s Hoover Institution and the Department of Economics in 1978, I taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and at the University of California, Berkeley. I was born in Palo Alto, attended school there and in Los Angeles, received my B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, and my Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

    In a 1976 paper, I introduced the distinction between fresh-water and salt-water economists. Bloggers using these terms are asked to contribute $1 to a fund that sends graduate students to MIT for one year and to the University of Minnesota for a second year.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy primary area of scholarly and clinical interest is the pathogenesis of problem behaviors shown by individuals diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), particularly those with neurogenetic forms of IDD, such as fragile X syndrome, Cornelia de Lange syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome. My work aims to both advance understanding of these disorders and to identify effective new treatment approaches for pediatric and adult patient populations by state-of-the-art methodologies, such as brain imaging, eye tracking and functional analysis to determine how environmental and biological factors affect the development of aberrant behaviors in these syndromes. The end goal of my research is to create patient-specific methods for treating the symptoms of these disorders.

    The primary objective of this project is to use advanced, multi-modal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, analyses of X chromosome parent-of-origin and cognitive-behavioral assessment to elucidate the effects of monosomy and X-linked imprinting on neurodevelopment and neural function in a large cohort of young girls with Turner syndrome, pre-estrogen replacement.

    The goal of the project is to locate genes outside the HLA region that influence susceptibility to narcolepsy.     BioI am a social psychologist with experience leading centers and teams within higher ed. I study and put into practice strategies to help people live, work, and thrive in today’s increasingly diverse and divided world. My expertise is in harnessing the power of culture to support organizational and societal change and disrupting cultural defaults that lead to bias and inequality. My research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, covered by national media outlets, and supported by leading foundations.

    As Executive Director and Senior Research Scientist at Stanford SPARQ, I oversee the center’s team and projects. I partner with practitioners in criminal justice, education, economic mobility, education, health, media, and technology to leverage behavioral science insights to drive change. I prioritize an approach to research that is grounded in society’s most pressing problems and centers the perspectives of practitioners working to lead change on the ground. I create opportunities for researchers and practitioners to learn from one another in mutually beneficial partnerships. I also regularly speak and advise on how social science research on race, culture, and inequality can drive strategies for change.

    Before Stanford SPARQ, I was Associate Director of Stanford’s Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity (CCSRE) and Stanford's Center for Opportunity Policy in Education (SCOPE). I am a Stanford Ph.D. alum in Social Psychology.

    BioBeatrice is appointed as the Teaching Fellow for the Environmental Law and Policy LLM program at Stanford Law School. Her research focuses on the protection of the environment in relation to and during armed conflicts, trends in rights based mitigation climate litigation and opportunities to strengthen Nation-State environmental relations.

    Prior to joining Stanford in 2022, Beatrice has held faculty positions at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Western Australia. Beatrice is a Research Associate at the Edinburgh Centre for International and Global Law, University of Edinburgh and a Doctoral Researcher at the Ghent Rolin-Jaequemyns International Law Institute, Ghent University. Beatrice serves as the Chair of the Congress of Nations and States Environmental Commission. Prior to academia, Beatrice has worked in both the private and public sectors and has a background in environmental policy.

In particular, his studies have focused on early determinants of eating behavior, physical activity, and parenting behavior in relation to early feeding decisions and parental influences on diet and eating. With the current epidemic of child obesity and it's comorbidities, he is currently involved in the development of protocols for adolescent bariatric surgery.

    BioDr. Han is a board-certified neurosurgeon with fellowship training in neuro-oncology. He is also a clinical associate professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford University School of Medicine and chief of neurosurgery at Palo Alto VA Medical Center.

    Dr. Han diagnoses and treats a wide range of conditions, including brain tumors, pituitary tumors, spinal tumors, and degenerative spinal disorders. He is passionate about caring for underserved populations, as well as educating and mentoring the next generation of neurosurgeons.

    Dr. Han’s academic and research interests include brain mapping, advancing diagnostic methods and treatments for brain tumors, and improving the quality of neurosurgical care. He has conducted several clinical trials to determine the safety and effectiveness of specific treatments for different tumors affecting the central nervous system.

    Dr. Han has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles in prestigious journals, including Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuro-Oncology, and the Journal of Neurosurgery. He also serves as a reviewer for many professional publications.

    Dr. Han is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and the Society for Neuro-Oncology. He serves as an executive committee member and abstract reviewer for annual conferences in several of these organizations.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy current research focuses on understanding the genetic and environmental etiology of complex disease and developing and evaluating efficient screening strategies based on etiological understanding. The areas of my research interests include statistical genetics, molecular epidemiology, cancer screening, health policy modeling, and risk prediction modeling. I have developed various statistical methods to analyze high-dimensional data to identify genetic and environmental risk factors and their interactions for complex disease.

    1. The molecular basis for diseases in which the pathway of transcription-coupled DNA repair is defective, including Cockyne syndrome (CS) and UV-sensitive syndrome (UVSS). Patients are severely sensitive to sunlight but get no cancers. See Hanawalt & Spivak, 2008, for review.

    2. Transcription arrest by guanine-rich DNA sequences and non-canonical secondary structures. Transcription collisions with replication forks.

    BioNick’s research focuses on administrative law and civil procedure, with a particular eemphasis on how procedural rules influence the formation of substantive legal doctrine. His current project examines the origins of laws and norms governing the independence of the federal civil service. His previous scholarship has been published in Law and History and the University of Pennsylvania Journal of Constitutional Law. He is the co-recipient of the American Society for Legal History’s 2019 Sutherland Prize for best article in the field of English legal history, and his scholarship has been cited by the High Court of Ireland.

    Nick received his BA in history from Yale University; his M.Phil. in History from Cambridge University, where he was a Gates Cambridge Scholar; and his JD from Yale Law School. Following law school, Nick clerked for Judge John M. Walker, Jr. on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Prior to joining Stanford Law School, he worked for five years as a litigator at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, where he handled all aspects of trial litigation and also briefed appeals before the United States Supreme Court and the federal courts of appeal. In addition to his work in practice, Nick served as Secretary of the New York City Bar Association’s Task Force on National Security and the Rule of Law, and as a civilian monitor for military commission proceedings at the U.S. Naval Station in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsHis research and clinical work focuses on the development of interventional techniques for fetal and neonatal treatment of congenital heart disease, pulmonary, vascular physiology, and the neurologic impact of open-heart surgery. He developed and pioneered the “unifocalization” procedure, in which a single procedure is used to repair a complex and life-threatening congenital heart defect rather than several staged open-heart surgeries as performed by other surgeons.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsA bad latch means maternal excruciating pain, ineffective milk transfer with subsequent weight loss, hypoglycemia, higher risk of hyperbilirubinemia and dehydration fever.All of the above led to early cessation of breastfeeding; 46% of mothers who initiate exclusive breastfeeding stop within the first 12 weeks because of difficult latch. I developed a latch tutorial focusing on step-by step-in striations for achieving an effective, non-painful latch.

    BioDr. Hannah graduated from Kansas City University of Medicine & Biosciences. He then completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Kansas and a fellowship in Hospice & Palliative Medicine at Stanford University before joining as faculty at Stanford. His clinical practice includes both inpatient palliative care consultation as well as ambulatory care in palliative medicine. His research and educational interests include symptom management and utilizing media to grow palliative care services and education.

    BioMichael Hannan is the Stratacom Professor of Management Emeritus in the Graduate School of Business and Professor of Sociology Emeritus in the School of Humanities and Sciences. He is also Professor of Organisation Theory, Durham University Business School.

    He received his PhD in sociology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1970. He came to Stanford as Assistant Professor of Sociology in 1969, moved to Cornell in 1984 where he was the Scarborough Professor of Social Sciences, and returned to Stanford in 1991.

    His major research interests include categories in markets, organizational ecology, sociological methodology, and formal sociological theory. His current theoretical research applies dynamic logics to organization theory. His current empirical research investigates the emergence of organizational categories and the implications of category membership for organizational identity in several domains, including winemaking in the Italian regions of Piedmont and Tuscany as well as Alsace in France.

    Professor Hannan has published more than 100 articles in scholarly journals. Two of his books have received best book awards from the American Sociological Association. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, has been a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences, the Netherlands Institute of Advanced Study, and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, and he received a Guggenheim fellowship.

    BioKatelyn is a Lecturer in the Civic, Liberal, and Global Education (COLLEGE) program. She earned a B.S. in Biology at Stanford and completed an honors thesis on her research in the Fire Lab using the nematode C. elegans to examine metal toxicity in the presence of the chelator, glyphosate. She went on to earn a Ph.D. in Genetics from the Stanford School of Medicine, studying stomatal development in the temperate grass model and smaller relative to wheat, Brachypodium distachyon, in the Bergmann Lab. Stomata are pores on the surfaces of leaves that regulate gas and water exchange. They are essential in managing the plant’s nutrient circulation, temperature, and water use efficiency, and therefore have important implications for drought tolerance. Katelyn’s research focused on characterizing members of a well-conserved transcription factor family involved in stomatal differentiation using genetic approaches to understand how grasses’ unique stomata are formed, including the creation of cross-species rescues to test for functional conservation across monocots and dicots.

    Katelyn is also passionate about science communication and teaching, and has organized science outreach events through outlets such as Stanford’s Splash, Taste of Science, and Nightlife at the Cal Academy; tutored at the Hume Writing Center and for the Biology honors thesis writing class; and served as an Indigenous research mentor for first year Native students in Frosh Fellows. When she’s not in the lab or classroom, Katelyn can be found gardening, fishing, playing board games, or exploring the great outdoors.

    BioEric Hanushek is the Paul and Jean Hanna Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University. He is internationally recognized for his economic analysis of educational issues, and his research has broadly influenced education policy in both developed and developing countries. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field, he was awarded the prestigious Yidan Prize for Education Research in 2021. His extensive and well-cited body of work encompasses many pivotal topics within education, including class size reduction, school accountability, and teacher effectiveness. His pioneering exploration into teacher effectiveness, quantified through students' learning gains, laid the foundation for the widespread adoption of value-added measures in evaluating educators and institutions. His seminal book, The Knowledge Capital of Nations: Education and the Economics of Growth, establishes the close relationship between a nation's long-term economic growth and the skill levels of its populace. His scholarly contributions include twenty-six books and over 300 articles contributing to knowledge within the field.     BioKen Hara is an Assistant Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University. He received a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering and a Graduate Certificate in Plasma Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan, and B.S. and M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the University of Tokyo. He was a Visiting Research Physicist at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory as a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Postdoctoral Fellow. Professor Hara’s research interests include electric propulsion, low temperature plasmas, plasma physics (plasma-wall interactions, plasma-wave interactions), data-driven modeling, rarefied gas flows, and computational fluid and plasma dynamics. He is a recipient of the Air Force Young Investigator Program Award, the Department of Energy Early Career Award, and the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Program Award.

    BioDr. Sigurdis Haraldsdottir, M.D., Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. She received her medical degree and master's degree in medical sciences from the University of Iceland. She did her Internal Medicine training at Boston University Medical Center and training in Medical Oncology at the Ohio State University, before joining the faculty at Stanford. Her clinical and research focus is in gastrointestinal malignancies with a focus on mismatch repair deficient cancers, particularly colorectal cancer. She is conducting population-based research on Lynch syndrome - an inherited cancer syndrome, and recently completed a nation-wide study on Lynch syndrome in Iceland. She received her Ph.D. in Medical Sciences in 2017 from the University of Iceland. Her interests also focus on investigating colorectal cancer genomics, and their effect on outcomes and treatment implications.

    BioGabriella Harari is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at Stanford University, where she directs the Media and Personality Lab.

    She studies how personality is expressed in the physical and digital contexts of everyday life. Much of her research is focused on understanding what digital technologies reveal about who we are, and how use of digital technologies shapes who we are. Her current projects analyze people’s everyday behavioral patterns (e.g., social interactions, mobility) and environmental contexts (e.g., places visited, social media platforms) to show how they are associated with individual differences in personality and well-being.

    Harari takes an ecological approach to conducting her research, emphasizing the importance of studying people and their behavior in natural contexts. To that end, she conducts intensive longitudinal field studies and is interested in mobile sensing methods and analytic techniques that combine approaches from the social and computer sciences. For example, methodologies she uses in her work in include surveys, experience sampling, longitudinal modeling, mobile sensing, data mining, and machine learning.

    Harari completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship and earned her PhD at the Department of Psychology at The University of Texas at Austin. She completed her BA in Psychology & Humanities from Florida International University, where she was also a Ronald E. McNair Scholar. Her work has been published in academic outlets such as Perspectives in Psychological Science, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and the Proceedings of the ACM on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies (IMWUT). Her work has also been supported by the National Science Foundation and Stanford HAI Seed Grant Awards.

    BioKate Hardy is a California Licensed Psychologist who has specialized in working with individuals with psychosis for over 15 years in both research and clinical settings. Dr. Hardy received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom. She has worked in specialist early psychosis services in both the UK and the US, including UCSF’s Prodrome Assessment Research and Treatment (PART) program, where she completed her post-doctoral fellowship, and as Clinical Director for the Prevention and Recovery from Early Psychosis (PREP) program. Dr. Hardy has significant experience in providing CBTp to individuals with early psychosis, and those at risk of developing psychosis, in both individual and group settings and integration of this clinical intervention to broader systems and staff teams. She has led multiple trainings and workshops in CBTp to a wide variety of audiences including community clinicians, psychiatrists, and families, and provides ongoing supervision and consultation in this approach. Dr. Hardy is also involved in the implementation of national strategies to increase dissemination of early psychosis models with the aim of bringing these cutting edge treatments to a broader population.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am interested in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications and augmented reality applications in medicine. These include abdominal, breast and musculoskeletal imaging, which require development of faster, quantitative, and more efficient MRI methods that provide improved diagnostic contrast compared with current methods. My work includes novel excitation schemes, efficient imaging methods and reconstruction tools and augmented reality in medicine.

    BioDr. Stephanie Harman is a palliative care physician and Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine. She graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and went on to complete a residency in Internal Medicine at Stanford and a Palliative Care fellowship at the Palo Alto VA/Stanford program. She then joined the faculty at Stanford. She co-founded the Palliative Care Program at Stanford Health Care in 2007 and served as Clinical Chief of the Section of Palliative Care in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health from 2016 - 2022. She is the inaugural Associate Chair for Women in Medicine for the Department of Medicine and the Director of the Stanford Leadership Development Program, a joint program between Stanford Health Care and the School of Medicine for emerging leaders. A 2017 Cambia Health Foundation Sojourns Scholar Leader Awardee, she has a passion for leadership development and has built a Women Leaders in Academic Medicine (WLAM) program in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health, which is now in its 6th year with 28 women leaders. Her other professional interests include clinical ethics and serious illness communication.

    BioHarris utilizes molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) of III-V compound semiconductor materials to investigate new materials for electronic and optoelectronic devices. He utilizes heterojunctions, superlattices, quantum wells, and three-dimensional self-assembled quantum dots to create metastable engineered materials with novel or improved properties for electronic and optoelectronic devices. His early work in the 1970's demonstrating a practical heterojunction bipolar transistor led to their application in every mobile phone today and record setting solar cell efficiency. He has recently focused on three areas: 1) integration of photonic devices and micro optics for creation of new minimally invasive bio and medical systems for micro-array and neural imaging and 2) application of nanostructures semiconductors for the acceleration of electrons using light, a dielectric Laser Accelerator (DLA), and 3) novel materials and nano structuring for high efficiency solar cells and photo electrochemical water splitting for the generation of hydrogen.

    Jerry M. Harris is the Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Geophysics and Associate Dean for the Office of Multicultural Affairs. He joined Stanford in 1988 following 11 years in private industry. He served five years as Geophysics department chair, was the Founding Director of the Stanford Center for Computational Earth and Environmental Science (CEES), and co-launched Stanford's Global Climate and Energy Project (GCEP). Graduates from Jerry's research group, the Stanford Wave Physics Lab, work in private industry, government labs, and universities.

    Research
    My research interests address the physics and dynamics of seismic and electromagnetic waves in complex media. My approach to these problems includes theory, numerical simulation, laboratory methods, and the analysis of field data. My group, collectively known as the Stanford Wave Physics Laboratory, specializes on high frequency borehole methods and low frequency labratory methods. We apply this research to the characterization and monitoring of petroleum and CO2 storage reservoirs.

    Teaching
    I teach courses on waves phenomena for borehole geophysics and tomography. I recently introduced and co-taught a new course on computational geosciences.

    Professional Activities
    I was the First Vice President of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists in 2003-04, and have served as the Distinguished Lecturer for the SPE, SEG, and AAPG.
